mark rae is the man behind one of the key uk music movements of the last 25 years. as a founder of the shop fat city records and the label grand central, mark worked with some of the worlds biggest artists going on to earn several platinumm discs with his work as one half of the highly respected production duo rae & christian. this project is a worlds first autobiography and album, the release is packaged as a gatefold 10 inch which opens out to the book held within. the 40 000 word book covers the author mark rae s journey through the music industry. it follows the creation and dissolution of fat city and grand central records, rae & christian and yesking. the underground club scenes of manchester, gang wars, success, failure, working with bobby womack, jay z and the pharcyde. the project has been supported by whosampled, dj magazine, vice and the tate modern. the artwork is exceptional featuring an historical montage throughout the inner gatefold sleeve. the music features guest vocals from tony d who was a big influence in the original grand central records sound, soul king pete simpson, multi instrumentalist shawn lee and kate rogers.

2016 sees the 3rd anniversary of houndstooth, and the label mark this with their 50th release. tessellations is a compilation of brand new, exclusive tracks from each of the 14 artists to release on the label. the release serves to simultaneously trace common threads and highlight tensions within such a stylistically expansive roster. this 12inch sampler collects four dancefloor-leaning cuts onto vinyl for the first time. the atmospheric jungle of special requests live from alpha centauri could be the soundtrack to an intergalactic chase scene, whilst akkords vector grinds gradually towards an explosion of mechanistic breaks, like an ancient machine brought to life. cant stop sees marquis hawkes dusting down the 303 for a playful yet powerful acid banger, before second storeys elephant ride draws syncopated funk from his machines in his inimitable style.

fatdog records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - the rutan, tom mc connell and mark hand. fdr003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last ep, this time taking us further into deeper detroit territories. mark hand offers us drexciyan techno in the form of cold feet. the rutans fable sits somewhere between vakula and some of henrik schwarzs earlier dub-house experiments, while fat dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with jaffa cakes. finally tom mc.connells juniper takes us into wonkier groove rhodes stylings which rounds off the ep very nicely indeed. support by john heckle, afrikan sciences, lay-far, enrico (neroli), sonars ghost (2000 black), burnski, wolf music

the second installment of uzuri’s “the wilderness sessions” delivers 3 tracks geared towards the refined dancers and listeners of the world. the idea here is slow burning broken beat tracks infused with the soul of jazz and funk. the ep opens with fox ‘n hound, a slightly menacing and equally sexy jam which ebbs and flows with a delightfully funky bass line and enough melodic accents to keep full attention. the secret here is in the details which are craft-fully manipulated by this talented duo. futonjam continues the trend of beautifully unfolding composition with its shuffled percussion and gracefully evolving melodies. a perfect track for home listening and for those deep sultry moments on the dance floor. the crown jewel of this release is certainly the near 9 minute odyssey that is zukunft/ silber. a track which entertains and pushes towards a sophisticated style which is undeniably unique in approach. using broken patterns as a back drop for beautifully orchestrated strings, micro flutes and longing horns it transforms from a sweet and delicate sound to something more demanding of our bodies movement. this release will be sure to mark the beginning of what we can expect from these two producers who clearly aim to set themselves apart from the crowd.

after making waves with early and idiosyncratic eps on labels like rush hour and astro:dynamics, singular uk talent bnjmn now steps up to make his debut on delsin with six tracks of experimental and inventive noise and techno. coil opens his account with screechy, unnerving synths squeals, imposing and throbbing pads and super deep kick drums that come at you from miles below. it s a hugely textured and spine tingling affair before the ambiance of berth comes rippled with glassy and alien little melodies. merge has turbo charged drums hiding beneath more unsettled synth based noise that sound sernee at the same time as being paranoid. on the flip, and suddenly makes your hairs stand on end with is gothic celestial glow and slithering synth patterns, blown is a damaged and degraded bit of icy, thumping and reverb heavy techno and azure ends on a brain soothing, chilled out ambient high. these are the sort of truly unique and magically textured tracks you would expect from a producer like bnjmn, and mark a fine debut on delsin.

this is the first release of mexican/canadian label departures records done by up-and-coming artist mike khayata. the ep features 2 original tracks and 2 remixes, shivers is a deep, slow but very dynamic track that reflects the artists thoughts on the immediacy of things these days. its chord progression drives the track and captures your attention from the moment it starts and makes for a very introspective listening experience not necessarily designed for the dance floors

italys kid mark follows up his much revered releases on swink & deso records by delivering an ep that demonstrates his qualities of producer of that pure house music sound

moderat sind apparat (sascha ring) und modeselektor (gernot bronsert und sebastian szary). hier der bedächtige klangtüftler und pop-poet, dort die beiden techno-b-boys. beide acts stehen für die berliner elektronikszene jenseits der geraden bassdrum. modeselektor sind die großmeister der unterirdischen bässe und elektrisierenden breakbeats, apparat ist der feingeist der elektronischen popmusik. die verweigerung, sich mit dem vorhandenen abzufinden, schweißt die drei in einer künstlerfreundschaft zusammen. auf dem ersten album definierten sie 2008 den moderat-sound. wobbelnde bässe und zuckende beats auf der einen seite, apparats filigrane stimme auf der anderen: gerade der extreme kontrast erschuf das einzigartige moderat-gefühl. in den nächsten jahren wurden beide acts zu international bekannten künstlern. sie definierten mit bahnbrechenden alben den elektronischen sound der zeit. heute ist das spektrum emotional und stilistisch größer geworden. es gibt keine grundstimmung mehr. in elf tracks erzählen moderat ein facettenreiches und doch kompaktes epos. sie sind verführer und hooligans, grübler und partysäue. in ihrer welt sind partytaumel und tiefsinn kein gegensatz. sie lassen kein kapitel ihres elektronischen und ihres analogen lebens aus. im clash zeigen diese großen musikerpersönlichkeiten neue charakterliche facetten. so ist in dieser wiederbegegnung eines der großen alben der elektronischen popmusik entstanden.
