in the third of the ‘phobiza trilogy’ we are invited through the ethereal haze that separates our world from ramzi’s flourishing kindom. guided always by the deity’s music, we are given passage through the arcane archipelago that ramzi calls home, a place where animals, children and wild spirits share territories and cooperate in harmony in their plight to protect these ancient islands from the ceaseless threat of the great grey invasion. with the night closely following us, we are welcomed to these lands in dusk’s light, with the warm tones of ‘bibwel’ (featuring asaël robitaille on synth) carrying us across 11 different islets, all with unique climates, flora and fauna. after travelling for many a sunrise and sunset we take pause at mid day on ‘det calash’ isle (with some beats provided by regular fantasy). we ending our journey with a final sunset, this time on the foggy island of ‘warhasu’ (recorded on vancouver island with hashman deejay). amor fati (meaning “love of fate” or “love of one’s fate” in latin) comes as the inaugural release on phoebé’s own fati records and is the new nesting place for ramzi and its’ extended family. the record ends the ‘phobiza’ story, following ‘phobiza dia’ on total stasis and ‘phobiza noite’ on moodhut.

rené audiard delivers two tracks in between worlds for this ep. once again, his special approach left us with two out of the ordinary tracks, two long journeys where classical melodies and warm minimalistic beats come together. it s dark, yet beautiful.

sparrow s visit of jamaica, “the isle of springs”, during the month of june 1963, has left him with very pleasant and joyful reminiscences of the love, warmth and hospitality of its people. well! and it s from there it all started, for like oliver twist, sparrow continued, where ever he went to ask for more, and, obviously when the drinks are in, the wits are out. you are therefore left to deduce whatever you may during his presentation of this contribution. “i ll be around” (bossa-nova) is a warning to one of his lovers of her promiscuous traits towards him and the retribution she would eventually suffer for so doing. theses two calypso songs were recorded with the famous bert inniss national recording orchestra. this single 7” is absolutely impossible to find and will warm any dances in the world.

t-coy s carino - an all-time uk acid house classic from 1987. fusing the industrial clicking and whirring of the uk s post-industrial landscape with the lush, melodic, balearic inspired piano lines of the white isle and sucking us all in in the process. a true masterpiece courtesy of mancunians mike pickering, simon topping and the late ritchie close who s combined projects included quando quango, m-people, annette, a certain ratio and more. it s truly hard to believe this record is 30 years old. it can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with anything being released today. the b-side regret is also an amazing, minimal slice of punk-funky 808 driven niceness. super stripped back and with an innocent charm and poppy vibe it is the perfect foil to the latino house chaos of carino on the other side. one could argue that the a-side will take you up, and the b-side will bring you down (in the best possible way!). this classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original 1987 deconstruction records label artwork and has been remastered from sony s original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.

a true balearic classic. one of a handful of records that can comfortably boast this title, elkin & nelson’s 1979 classic jibaro sits in the canon of selections that enlightened the ears of the jet-set and globe trotting music fanatics in the heady and much storied years of the white isle in the 1980’s. the colombian brothers javier and leon marin velez brought their own rustic brand of folksy-rock-psychedelia to the listening public in 1974 with their debut lp angeles y demonios on columbia records. the brothers had relocated to spain, snared a major label deal and ran with it. the first of 3 lps it proved a big hit in later years with adventurous dj’s and selectors. a cult record you might say. of course, this lp featured jibaro in all it’s forms, but it is this 1986 reissue 12” promo pressing with its iconic, distinctive jacket that was the coveted slab sonic adventurers were seeking. fully sanctioned and legitimately remastered from the original sources and packaged in its original columbia promo sleeve jibaro is back on the shelves, still an incredible record that gets pulled by the most discerning selectors across the globe. a true classic, featured here in its long and short versions as per the ’86 release. absolute top-shelf stuff here, essential, must own and classic.

with its sixth release new york trax continues the mission of highlighting the jewels of the new york underground. liquid asset is a philadelphia-born brooklyn-based hardware virtuoso who has made a name for herself by virtue of appearances on labels such as e-saggila s summer isle brooklyn s own primitive languages jacktone and acid etch where she has recently delivered a furious 7- split with isabella. liquid asset built her own 808 and 303 clones by hand. the modified 303 is particularly audible in the opening track of the record -ephemeral nights- where she did not waste time on an intro and went straight to creating a sonic pandemonium by blending an airhorn sound with frenzy acid basslines and a hardcore-leaning 909 kick. -contact- is a merciless creature of the night with its relentless dark groove building up throughout this composition cannot easily be classified as a representation of any particular genre. -controlperception- opens the b side. here liquid asset plays with a cheerful acid line over a dreamy landscape often punctured with bleeping sounds. finally in -forgetmenot- two opposite sounding basslines intertwine creating a minimal yet very capturing composition to close this one of a kind record.

as noted on another release (see ropin), cornell campbell has enjoyed one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican singer, and he is blessed with a readily identifiable style too. he began his career for clement ‘sir coxsone’ dodd in 1956, when rhythm and blues held sway in jamaica, and later cut some ska songs for king edwards. he then passed through the sensations in the rock steady phase and worked as a solo singer at treasure isle, before returning to studio one with the eternals, scoring huge hits such as ‘stars’ and ‘queen of the minstrel’ as the 60s gave way to the 70s. his greatest phase of popularity was them brokered by hit-making producer bunny lee, who kept him on top right through the 1970s and into the 80s. the 1975 album dance in a greenwich farm was first issued on the grounation label in the uk. along with a re-working of ‘stars’ re-titled ‘the sun,’ a re-working of ‘queen of the minstrel’ as ‘girl of my dreams’ and the sound system opus that is the title track, the album has the boastful ‘conquering gorgon’ and a number of keenly-observed cover tunes, including a cut of the gaylads’ ‘no good girl,’ a version of the heptones’ ‘why did you leave me’ and a killer cut of the uniques’ ‘watch this sound’ (based on ‘for what it’s worth’ by buffalo springfield).

invisible, inc. again turn to the mystic sounds of the fourth world for their latest release by bringing cosmic voyager peter power into the fold. previously only available digitally “awake into life” by peter power & friends’ finally comes out on vinyl courtesy of the like-minded invisible inc. alongside peter himself, the “friends” are a band of well known and not-so-well known collaborators from around the world: australia’s bronze savage (aficionado recordings) and brazil’s psilosamples (desmonta/octave) to name just two. the resulting mystical brew is meditative, hypnotic and indeed deeply psychedelic.....and most certainly well worthy of seeing the light of day as a physical release. originally hailing from the emerald isle of ireland and settling for a while in berlin, peter power now resides in bahia, brazil close to where the world famous and free-wheeling voodoohop collective sprung its roots on the streets and clubs of sao paolo. peter has been a continuing member of the voodoohop crew for a couple of years and has toured with them extensively as both musician and performer. respected as a dj and a producer his unique world-flavoured brand of electronic music has been released on multi culti, kleine reise, crime city, polychrome sounds and now invisible, inc. limited to 300 copies with download card. copies come individually hand-numbered.

one of jamaicas most highly-rated vocalists, alton ellis made an incredible contribution to the islands popular music. blessed with a particularly emotive voice that brings shivers to the spine whether singing original material or cover tunes, ellis was born and raised in trench town, the west kingston ghetto area that gave rise to bob marley and the wailers and countless other singers. ellis and singing partner eddie parkins hit big in 1961 with the ballad muriel for coxsone dodd, and after parkins moved to the usa, ellis teamed briefly with john holt, and then began fronting the flames harmony group. he excelled in the rock steady style, christening the genre with rock steady and i have got a date, bouncing between studio one and treasure isle for a number of years. from 1971, he spent increasing period in london, but continued to record hits in jamaica for various producers. the 1979 release love to share was arranged by the great studio one keyboardist, jackie mittoo, who co-produced the album with junior lincoln, founder of the london-based bamboo label, the disc straddles the line between lover’s rock and roots reggae, remaining a lesser-known classic

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

having emerged from the murky waters of the tape scene on always human and summer isle, strahinja arbutina follows up on a first 12- for bank records nyc with this sterling sure shot for the excellent bliq label. there s a range of styles displayed across fox venom, but the tracks are held together by the immersive, droning atmospheres that linger in the background of the productions. -fox venom- lurches under a heavy cloud like the best subterranean techno should, while -teabagging mystery- gets locked into a deathly minimal groove. this is music for the graveyard shift, although deemonlover s -so solid mix- of -fox venom- does inject some wild breakbeat action into the gothic surroundings

zweitwerk des world music trios um folk-koryphäe james yorkston! das zweite album von yorkston/thorne/khan wird anfang april auf domino veröffentlicht. es folgt dem von kritikern gefeierten banddebüt “everything sacred” von 2016 und präsentiert einen zusammenspiel verschiedener strömungen wie dem nordindischen sarangi, jazz-gefärbtem bass mit reminiszenzen an danny thompson und einer akustik gitarre, die den folk- & blues-koryphäen elizabeth cotton, dick gaughan und mississippi john hurt tribut zollt – und drei sehr unterschiedlichen vokalisten: james yorkston (east neuk of fife), jon thorne (isle of wight) und suhail yusuf khan (neu delhi). “neuk wight delhi all-stars” ist eine sammlung von traditionellen indischen und britischen folksongs, wunderschönen originalen und eigenwilligen coverversionen, die nicht nur klassische musik aus indien und jazz zusammenbringt, es zitiert ebenfalls reggae, irischen dudelsack und den einfluss des madagassischen gitarristen d’gary. tommy mccook to be leader of the skatalites in the early 1960s, he went on to become the chief exponent of rock steady as leader of the supersonics house band at treasure isle. mccook remained a key session player throughout the reggae era, and during the roots reggae heyday of the mid-1970s, his expressive melodies found particularly strong outlet, especially on the music he created for grassroots producer bunny ‘striker’ lee as a member of the aggrovators, the studio outfit lee hand-picked from the cream of jamaica’s musical crop. when enhanced by the adventurous mixing experiments of king tubby, the engineer that turned dub into an art form, instrumental aggrovators music became positively ethereal, yielding an exceptional listening experience. on king tubby meets the aggrovators at dub station, tommy mccook blows mean sax and flute over dubs of outstanding tracks by johnny clarke, cornell campbell, linval thompson, delroy wilson, and others greats. first issued on third world in 1976, this vinyl reissue comes complete with four thematic bonus tracks, and the whole disc makes for essential listening. reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

newcomer arran trax arrives with an ep of ethereal melodic house music and the first vinyl release for madrid label envy music. hailing from the scottish isle of arran but long residing in hamburg, ‘whiting bay’ and ‘ailsa craig’ draw on the mysticism and beauty of his native island. glasgow’s tre turner and l.a. resident ricky tinez rough things up on remix duty with two direct-to-tape vintage jams for the clubs.

somewhere between par grindviks debut album >isle of real< and his more recent output with dax j and nihad tule lands his new solo ep, >mnemosyne<. first track >o maru< launches the three-track release with a hi-tempo, swirling vortex of kicks and claps. >dawn< opens side b with syncopated flams and twisted harmonics, while >70sheets< sees ethereal chords swell dramatically under a hypnotic groove.

acclaimed be as one boss shlomi aber makes a big step up here by putting out a trio of his killer techno cuts on the always excellent and forward looking nonplus label run by boddika. his xy play ep continues in his no nonsense, floor facing style and impresses once more. shlomi aber is an underground titan who runs his own musical empire in the form of his be as one label. he has made it into an essential outlet for no frills house and techno and his own output has found him in fine favour with djs and dancers alike. playing all over the world and also serving as an expert at the emerging ibiza festival on the white isle, here he comes correct once more. the title ep xy play is a brain frying affair with cantering drums and stern synths bringing a dark and intone vibe to the groove. way old story is just as heads down but less ominous, here the synths are a little spooky and add intrigue to his slick rubbery drums. last but not least related sources is a hunched over house track with dub in its kick drums and a desolate industrial feel in the landscapes above. atmospheric from the first to the last moment, this is another killer ep from shlomi aber.

makam returns to dekmantel records with his first full-length album for the amsterdam based label. blankens ongoing search for fresh sounds, textures and rhythms has lead him to than sadet, a gorgeous piece of work that takes his sound into new directions. that sadet displays a refinement of makams sound. the music is highly tactile, with an emphasis on the surroundings of the environment in which it was created. blanken: than sadet is a secluded beach on an island in thailand. a mysterious atmosphere haunts it. its windy and the weather is always a bit worse compared to the rest of the isle. there are many cliffs and you cant swim because the waves are too high. four years ago i visited than sadet for the first time and ive been coming back ever since. at one point i decided to bring my studio equipment. for a week, i dedicated my days to making music. those sketches formed the basis of the album.

having held it down in miami for some, avstin frank is building his profile as a serious connoisseur of stripped down jams with this release for local label sports. isle of venice is a perfect morning-ready treat, all woozy synth tones and delicate percussive shuffle embellished with dubby treatment, while timeless travels sports a tougher structure without losing the heavylidded quality of the opening track. contemplation meanwhile taps into a little touch of french flair with its shuffling groove and jazzy undertones, making a neat foil to the other tracks on offer. gua camoles remix of isle of venice meanwhile takes a diversion into nagging, oddball minimalism for the crowd who like their beats chopped up.
