casey tucker is on a roll at the moment, and his infectious brand of uplifting, full-fat machine soul seems to have struck a chord in many places (not least via his reissues on for those that knoe). after appearing on love notes back in 2015, tuckers back on the label with another salvo of colourful, charming and utterly magnificent house jams shot through with the inventive programming of techno. alternative faction is many things a bubbly acid track, a swooning deep house cut and a sassy broken beat affair and yet feels utterly smooth in its execution. that time of year has plenty of motor city soul feeding into its composition, not least in the gorgeous synth strings, and new mission gets busy in the swing with all kinds of bouncing melodies and rhythms.

dilated pupils is a collective group of likeminded friends home-based in the netherlands. when forces are joined in one of their many studios each individual brings his own influences and styles to the table. together they share a distinct flavor in productions and raw one-take jam sessions created with the use of analogue machines and often recorded on tape. each of them have their own solo productions as well as other collaborations, but when united as dilated pupils they prefer to be known jointly as one entity with their own unique and distinguished sound. since 2014 the group has developed an interesting and widespread discography with releases on labels such as fear of flying, sol asylum, mode of expression, tabla, music is art, dorcas, make sense and mayak.

following lo sheas industrial iterations ep, duskys 17 steps welcomes the mysterious polymod to the label family with a three track ep of club tools that draw on classic acid house and techno influences. hooked with a vintage 88 piano loop and tightly sprung bassline, opener no other has been ever present in dusky’s sets since the autumn - already inspiring multiple posts in a certain well-known facebook id group, as well as causing one eager id hunter to tweet dusky with home played piano videos of the main loop. for all its catchiness, though, it maintains an understated approach that plays on dynamics and contrast - a driving club tool. taking a darker route but maintaining the intensity, tx goes for the jugular with a looping surge of acid and rolling electro rhythms. completing the trio is the spacious pg1000 that joins the dots between 90s ambient, proto-house and detroit machine music at its most dreamy.

tom ellard is the creative force behind australian post-punk band severed heads. in 1982 he self-released two cassettes of solo material, “80s cheesecake” and “snappy carrion”. these cassettes document the transitional period between the early experimental severed heads’ albums “clean” and “blubberknife” before the start of something new with “since the accident”. with the advent of the then new roland tb-303 bass synthesizer, a machine synonymous with the acid house sound, tom began to write more beat driven material. the rhythms are made by a tr-808 drum machine, kawai s100f and sh-1 synthesizers, plus various televisions, radios, cassette decks and pedals. two songs from these cassettes would later appear on the b-side of the “dead eyes opened” single.

with fractal s analogue assassin ep, dubliner dave hayden (alias roguefrequency) delivers four acid/techno bangers openly displaying industrial influences. jerked off sturdy analog gear, the solid 808, 909, 4/4 rythmics is skirmished by cavelike 303 acidic patterns. rearguard consists of sunless modular synths and gritty atmospheric drones. as a certificate of choice, the release has already been supported by dj s such as unwelt, errorbeauty & and. like always on kromatones, it s limited to 300 copies pressed on 140gr. 12- vinyls coming coloured, this time with transparent blue. so, obivously we got here some rather stealth yet smashing tactical cruise sonic machine!

signing on the second release of the label blue night jungle, the duo dudmode disturbs its machines and inspirations around a wild and mystical acid techno - sometimes minimalistic, sometimes extravagant. two faces of a same coin which the lyon guys are trying to explore by inviting, for the whole b face, two french artists they feel very close with : jibis, head-speaker of a new techno beat both dense and aerial , vardae, owner of the label allegorythme records and great defender of a more mental and obscure vibe. « une nuit dans l’herbe » (« one night in the grass ») ep marks the strong come back of lyonnese rave culture’s children, already sanctified by a long and sensual experience on the stage.

after gunnar haslam inaugurated kalvanic languages with his deep-minded techno styles, now it s up to supposed newcomer bill westerby to follow up with another round of elevated machine learning. k-stream was a smart choice for the lead track, bubbling along on a warm acid line and shuffling a wealth of dubby processing around in the middle distance. down a back alley in cholon is a slightly more wound up affair with a bleepy lead and a firmer jack powering the drums, but the end results are actually more meditative than that description might have you believe. caye de crabe is a more overtly tripped out affair with polyrhythmic phrases weaving in and out of each other while westerby lets rip on the parameter tweaks in a fine display of machine wielding prowess.

after a track, a tape and an ep released on acid waxa, opal tapes and dream ticket, respectively, binary digit logically sees his first lp, 38000 summer hits, released on stochastic releases.
this new album comprises 6 tracks of edm: emotional dance music. they were made and recorded during the hot summers of 2016 and 2017. everything you need then is freshness and coolness and this is exactly what they are giving. they combine the overall positivity of the summer and the melancholy caused by the insistence of the heat, of the light, of the endless nights. they were played directly from the machine to a 1/4’’ tape, which explains their very natural and direct development. 303-like bass, gnarly hi-hats, heavy kicks and digital licks are still to be expected here.

m-twelve is a new collaboration between tortured and electrix label owner, billy nasty and nick dunton of surface records, 65d mavericks fame and more recently, poverty is violence label. taking their name, m-twelve, from the iconic fred perry t-shirt, the pair decided to combine forces based on a love of techno and electro, their strong friendship and many late night conversations in the back rooms of various nightclubs. they started recording together last year and the ‘apocalypse in paradise ep’ is the first signs of their monthly meetings at what’s been dubbed, “dunton abbey studios”. the ep features their two original cuts of beautifully crafted emotional electro, the warm and glittering ‘all the things’ and ‘time spent’ with it’s deep narrative and tough machine groove. in addition, remixes of ‘time spent’ come from sync 24 (scand / cultivated electronics) who delivers an energetically fuelled reworking and electro veterans, transparent sound with a stripped and stomping acidic version. billy and nick have also just started work on remixes for tracks by london modular alliance and mr velcro fastener, so expect to hear more of their m-twelve work over the coming months.

seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

villa Åbo in the alternative solo project of swedish musician and producer jan svensson, who has been making electronic music for the better part of 30 years as the artist behind such aliases as frak, studio ss and alvars orkestra. svensson also runs legendary swedish dance and experimental music label börft, the product of a mutual appreciation for severed heads and terse tapes. as villa Åbo he released two records in 1997 on börft and remained inactive for 17 years until the dutch label bio rhythm coaxed him into revisiting the project and released a double 12&#8243,, in 2014. jan has since followed with a steady stream of 12” singles for kontra-musik, noise in my head and radio lundberg.
“magnetic moves” is villa Åbo’s debut album, originally released in an limited edition of 65 hand-numbered cassettes by funeral fog in 2016.
clocking in at over 46 minutes, this first-ever vinyl edition spreads the 8 ragged techno tracks across four sides for maximum loudness. some songs are aggressively potent, with cyclical synth riffs and razor-sharp acid lines riding a heavy, funk-fuelled techno groove. others tracks are more fluid, vintage underground resistance or derrick may with killer drum machine workouts that come in handy as dj tools. all songs have been remastered by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a photograph of jan’s mother’s house, the meaning behind “villa Åbo”. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

my rules storms into 2018 with the raw machine music project happy family from eric duncan and justin van der volgen. a side downtown wedgeee kicks off with twisted acid lines and drunken arpeggios which build and build until completely going off the rails, then finishing with ethereal pads and metallic percussion. b side bad monks ups the tempo and goes even further into woozy psychedelic territory with thick dizzying drones and a smeared pounding analogue rhythm.

get physical is proud to announce the release of the first ever album from chicago house luminary dj pierre. entitled wild pitch: the story, it collects originals and remixes old and new, and stands as a testament to the unique skill of one of dance musics most important figures. famously, dj pierre as good as invented the squelch of acid house when playing with his roland tr-303 drum machine as part of phuture back in the late eighties. from there he went on to clock up more than 200 credits under aliases like doomsday, prime one, raving lunatics, ac!d face, dj pierres afro acid project and many more. he also became famous for the wild pitch mixes and alias that lend this album its name: they were characterised by long intros, layer upon layer of strings, repetitive vocal samples, and filtered hypnotic sounds on hard beats. working with labels like strictly rhythm, trax, king street, nite grooves, international deejay gigolo and more recently get physical, pierre has contributed hugely to the global evolution of house music for thirty years plus. this is a timely reminder of that and one that is jam packed with essential tunes that, old or new, still sound impossibly fresh. included is a cover version of donna summers classic and pioneering disco cut ‘i feel love. it is a 9 minute masterpiece of loose drums, wild acid lines and synthesised squelches that build and build before the vocal arrives and carries you away to the stars

us producer d’marc cantu needs little introduction in the world of acid house and techno. since the late 2000s he’s been serving us quality musical output on labels like crème organization, m>o>s recordings, nation, altered moods or spectral sound, just to name a few. as well as his solo productions, he’s also one half of 2am/fm unit, alongside tadd mullinix (jtc / dabrye).
using a selection of hardware tools and analogue machines, his rugged sound draws on house, techno, acid, electro and hip hop and features crafty studio skills, knowing sampling and lovable raw aesthetics, defining his own sound that became known as jakbeat.
his latest offering for little beat different is, well, rather different in comparison to his usual club oriented output. it’s not as focused on straightforward dancefloor bangers, (although they are present here too), but features more experimental pieces, suitable for home listening purposes. totalling almost 38 minutes in length, this project has more of an album feel to it than a 12”.

tb is the alias of permanent vacation label co-head tom bioly. his releases as tb so far are invitation to love on john talabot s hiverned 10inch imprint (was voted amongst the best 10inch releases by uk fact magazine), and -city girl on permanent vacation, of which german groove magazine wrote entirely superb. heartbreak hotel is a double twelve-inch release with eight tracks of melancholic dance noir set in smoke-filled darkness. acid bobbles, distorted strings and echoed guitars are mangled and layered on machine beats and disco drums.

after releasing space control an intergalactic journey into synthesizers, back in 2012, the theremynt duo went on to release a successful, if steady, stream of eps, including robotique de l amou r and vampiros discos (a tribute to brazilian filmmaker ze do caixao). with remixes coming from the likes of david carretta, acid washed and club bizarre, these were playlisted by scene djs such as marvin & guy and ivan smagghe, amongst others. now yann and eva are striking back with their second lp, parallels. it s a record that sees them changing their colour palette and mood, but one that s still haunted by ghosts that lurk within their synthesizers and drum machines. the 10 tracks still exhibit peel s ever shifting vocal style and yann s sophisticated arrangements. but the second lp oscillates between ballad and dancefloor, landing between cosmic disco influences, krautrock and other progressive techno sounds. as a bonus, the album also features a cover of famous 80 s anthem self control. to celebrate argot s fifth year of releases, we re launching a series of compilations boldly entitled american dance music. argot s first ever various artists compilation continues its mission of showcasing homegrown talents, assembling a cast of familiar faces and welcome compatriots for the inaugural edition. american dance music vol. 1 features the long anticipated return of the black madonna, who debuts her new collaborative project with rupert murray, throwing shapes. you ll recognize argot stalwarts savile, olin, todd osborn, maxine & cleo, and hippie priest on the tracklist. we ve also invited friends noncompliant and alex falk to the fold. with future volumes we aspire to look even further afield and cast the spotlight on many diverse talents who make up american dance music. much of american dance music vol 1. is aimed squarely at the dance floor, whether it s todd osborn s smooth and playful romp, 80s are here (part 2), or noncompliant s acid tweaked ode to girls everywhere, femslash. throwing shapes comes bursting from the gates with the raving stomp of heatstroke, channeling midwest raves as much as the thomas bangalter tunes inspired by them. savile offers the growling stepper, reality is a sound (share power mix), while alex falks vines provides an effervescent vocal moment. olin and maxine & cleo double down on hypnotic motifs: the former s 2d rhythm whips snare riffs off the walls of a late night jam, the latters imagine yrself catches dancers in a lockstep house groove with stimulating vocals as its key. the compilation concludes on hippie priests dream machine, whose melancholic melodies and cinematic scale twiddle heartstrings with a deft hand.

takef heads the second release of young toulouse-based collective shawarma records, with a club-smashing tape. strong beats throb through a melt of acid lines and trance-inspired fxs, this one is a deathfloor killing machine.

following on from 2016’s excellent “birsk” single on futureboogie, philipp lauer returns to the label with a new three track single. the “las brisas” ep kick starts with the mechanical funk of “pile”, acidic notes drip over heavy ebm drums whilst a hovering ‘resse’ style bassline dominates, the influence of early house and industrial dance are ever present here on this belter of a track from the tuff city kids and talamanca system player.
more acid pressure can be found on “clipper”, a blazing and dynamic slice of anthemic balearic dance. searing pads and lustrous melodies pour over the robust drum machine workout, that’ll have dancers reaching for the skies! real stirring stuff from lauer, which continues with closing track “tyco”. ricocheting stabs and cowbell hits bounce off a sturdy kick drum as the track flourishes with more on-point melodies and a snaking bass. dripping with emotive refrains, lauer brings his very best to the table here, and rounds off an ep that’s most definitely all killer and no filler!

this september will see visionquest return with alexi delano’s ‘water colors’ ep, accompanied by a remix from the persuader aka jesper dahlba&#776,,ck. chilean born, swedish raised, new york adopted and amsterdam based producer and dj alexi delano has an impressive back catalogue dating back over two decades and featuring releases on labels such as laurent garnier’s f communications, richie hawtin & john acquaviva’s plus 8, ghostly international’s spectral sound and m_nus as well as visionquest where he returns to here following his collaborative ‘the breeze’ ep alongside label co-founder shaun reeves in 2013. title-track ‘water colors’ opens the release, a smooth and gradually unfolding composition fuelled by an amalgamation deftly programmed multi-layered melodies which ebb and flow throughout the sturdy rhythmic foundation. following is the persuader’s take on ‘water colors’ which dubs things out to create a murky submerged feel in contrast, utilizing the original’s hypnotic melodies whilst subtly working in a rugged 303 line throughout. ‘communicate’ then rounds out the package with a groove-led feel, bringing a squelching acid bass, hooky vocal chop and modulating synth flutters into the limelight as the shuffled dynamic drum machine workout carries things along

emerging through storm-like waves of distortion, opener ‘alpha’ sets the scene for this beguiling cassette release, with melodies rising out of — and then descending back into — the chaos. ‘3000 years’ takes vocal samples as a starting point, before melting into layer upon layer of delay, after which ‘confounded’ picks up the pace with its heavily distorted beats and the side then closes to the sound of a distant choir burning in acidic ambience in the shape of ‘fruitless clicking’. the nightmarish, malfunctioning machinery vibes continue onto the second side, with the more dance oor-friendly ‘strange conversations’ and ‘the brink’ bookended by the two-part ambient epic ‘pale blue dot’. dark, glitchy, and at times outright uncomfortable — perfectly suited to the cassette format.

camea returns with the third release on her neverwhere imprint, titled vanish , this spring. in her new single, she digs deep on her drum machine into studio 1-esque territory, using alluring classic minimal techno grooves as a back drop for her seductively soulful, selfconflicted vocals. camea not only captures a timeless micro-house vibe in this piece, but she continues to push her sound forward as well as her love for avant-guard techno. up next is delft imprint boss, la-4a, best known for his analogue vintage roland drum machine productions. he has laid down an irresistible 303 break-beat club mix of camea s track in the a2 spot. his dance cut of her vocals over bass driven percussion is a perfect counter piece to the original, and compliments the sound from his recent acid techno album phonoautograph . on the flip side, berlin techno legend and ostgut ton/berghain resident tobias. gives his graceful interpretation. he has reworked the original into a tasteful, dark, spacious 8-minute minimal techno piece, with percolating panning and filters on the vocals. as usual with tobias., he clearly conveys his undeniable expertise and instinct for exquisite dance music. with this release, camea is also marking the 2nd anniversary of her cult neverwhere radio show this spring, having produced twenty-four, two-hour episodes with exclusive dj mixes and guests. the show currently has residencies on digitally imported, tsugi radio and ibiza sonica, and camea has quickly established herself as a driving force in the left-field techno community, and a passionate advocate of underground radio.
