imagine a collab between cabaret voltaire and eric copeland mixed by the scientist and you’ll start to enter the sphere of robin asselman. all spectrums explored. the off kilter dub waltz of ’16-16’ stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. ‘fitness talk’ perhaps best showcases assel’s interest in dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories. being the nephew of dj marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from marcelle to robin throughout his youth....

since his untimely death at the all too young age of 32 the world has grown to appreciate the work of j dilla even more than when he was alive. there’s an ethereal quality to jay dee’s works, part boom bap but more mellow. mellow, but never soft. and dilla never stopped making beats, his mpc was by his side until the very end. it now resides in the smithsonian. due the prolific nature of his beat making, the world is blessed to have stacks of dilla material – some coming to light even this many years after his passing. in the world of hip hop, no one’s mother is more famous that ma dukes. go ahead, name check chuck d’s mom or chance the rapper’s mom or ti’s mother – without hitting google. and one of the reasons we all know ma dukes is her tireless effort to maintain dilla’s legacy. this release is yet another step in that direction. presented here, from the official ma dukes collection, are 15 works by jay dee from deep in the vaults, being released on vinyl for the first time.

before boogie funk had a resurgence in 2012, ruckazoid was dropping rare funk albums in 2004. his demos were floating around la, but it wasn’t until 2009 that breakbot remixed ruckazoid’s original “life’s fantasy”, which was later released in 2011 as an original track titled “fantasy” on ed banger records. fantasy became a breakout hit scoring a #1 single on itunes. in 2013 when daft punk released “get lucky” featuring pharrell, funk was officially back in the mainstream. those in the know knew breakbot & ruckazoid helped rekindle the funk flame worldwide. after all, the label ed banger is headed by busy p, and busy p managed daft punk. suprinsingly, ruckazoid did not tour with breakbot, opting to stay in the studio to record more albums. amazing lover being one of these albums, with love game becoming the lead track.

the enigmatic label from berlin, schakal recordings is back with its fifth release and young dj lorenz lepus is next in line. the lepus project has gone through many guises, finally lorenz settled on making music as a solo artist under the lorenz lepus alias in 2014. while still studying at school lorenz became a resident at chalet’s tuesday sound department parties, cutting his teeth in the cities clubs he has played in venues including hoppetosse, sisyphos, arena and many more. this dedication to his music was not without some confusion, being aware of the melan- cholic minimal tendencies of his productions he has always been loathe to pin himself to a particular genre.what with the success of his career so far.. perhaps this isn t a bad thing. ‘feral child’ is made up of two original tracks and two remixes.the title track s melody swells until it breaks down into a pulsing and rolling rhythm. ‘lost’ is more immediate in its dance-floor compatibly, maintaining the rolling style lorenz imbues his take on deep house with an emotional poignancy rarely heard. floyd lavine steps up for the first remix on the ep, floyd is a resident at the legendary rise par- ties at watergate, with one foot in berlin and the other in his native cape town floyd delivers a beauti- fully loopy and oddball twist on ‘feral child’ adding crunching static sounds. providing a harder take on ‘feral child’, italies vii circle change the rolling melody into a slow techno heater.

making a splash with rs019 is a newcomer called mallard. discovered by bradley after being front and centre for almost every rs dance since 2016, the south london based producer and multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with his debut ep ‘verte’.
currently studying jazz double-bass at trinity school of music, mallard’s productions demonstrate a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions. at just 20 years old, he has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will only hear more of in the years to come.
this ep, at once varied in tone and tempo is held together by a strong sonic identity and an overarching artistic vision: from the morphing polyrhythmic percussion of ‘surface’ to the shifting, heady pattern of ‘aquitaine’ via the psychedelic breaks of ‘untitled’ we are taken on quite the trip.

all djs and producers around have at least one secret weapon to play. this series curated by marvin & guy is the equation that joins together very special edits from very special artists. it will be out in three volumes in different colours: first black, second grey and third white.

my third week in amsterdam i found my way to a small speakeasy tucked away amongst a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways. a doorman waved me inside, a knowing smile twisted around the half-smoked blunt hanging from his lips. i made my way down crooked, narrow stairs into a dimly lit room full of patrons nodding in the haze, feet tapping in time as they smiled and sipped at green-tinged cocktails. the soft sound of glasses clinking amongst murmured conversation served to accentuate the flaw in the scene before me, there was no music. realising i d paused in the entrance long enough to draw a few amused looks from the tables nearest me, i regained my composure and headed towards the bar, pondering the mystery before me. i reached the counter as the barman was mixing a cocktail and waited, but before i could order the man turned and placed a glass in front of me, the same half smile on his lips the doorman had shown me as he nodded at a specials board listing a pistachio sour. it sounded good so i took it to an empty seat and returned to my examination of the bizarre room. as i sat down a grinning girl next to me offered a toke on her joint, and as the no indoor-smoking law was clearly being ignored here i gratefully took a careless draw. as my coughing subsided i took a deep gulp of my drink, and suddenly music flooded my ears. my jaw dropped as i raised my head to see a guy on stage mesmerising the crowd with chill beats, house music permeating the formerly silent bar. the girl with the joint smiled at my amazement. his name s sune she told me, welcome to 8 till late.

it is summer time in nang land which means the dials are being set to balearic. step forward our all-around good chap, friend and producer buddy pete herbert. he has teamed up with bali based musician and keyboard player martin denev to deliver an album of the finest bali-inspired balearic house. hot and balmy evenings here we come.

zeb wayne returns with a majestic and scintillating song titled ‘wulfman’, featuring a trio of top tier remixers including alva noto, calibre and radio slave. following the release of ‘float’ on rekids last year, ‘wulfman’ is a beautiful song that demonstrates how musically versed wayne is as a producer, blending a serene vocal by ziwi, with intricate sounds to create a truly beautiful song from start to finish. alva noto, who composed the film score for the revenant alongside ryuichi sakamoto, as well as being the co-founder of esteemed minimal imprint raster noton, is the first of three heavyweight remixers. the renowned german producer employs his signature elements of grit, static and glitch resulting in an inimitable melancholic cut. well respected for traversing numerous electronic music sub-genres, as evident in his recent album on craig richards’ the nothing special, calibre ups the energy in his remix using sultry synths, syncopated percussion and mesmerising effects. concluding the colossal package, rekids founder radio slave creates a club-ready reinterpretation of his own, complete with fine-tuned kicks, looped vocals and a heady bassline.

dutch jungle loons fff and coco bryce team up once again for another amen excursion on myor massiv. space is the place on this 12inch, with both jams featuring a short documentary s worth of chatter about giant planets, failed stars and opposing quadrants. whereas fff takes a rather intricate and, dare i say it, intelligent approach on the a-side, coco bryce s more massiv goes straight for the throat, with amen chops and a double tempo pulse bassline being dropped mere seconds after take off.

an original copy of the brasileira lp by brazilian singer maria rita stumpf has been on top of collectors and music lovers wishlist for the past couple of years, since cântico brasileiro no 3 (kamaiura)- broke out and cast a spell worldwide – from japan to brazil, from norway to south africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. for the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album – and get to know other gems such as lamento africano/rictus and a cidade it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs. the good news are that the lp will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through selva discos, a new label run by augusto olivani and millos kaiser (the dj/production duo known as selvagem) in partnership with jd twitch s optimo music. it s a legit reissue overviewed by maria rita stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining dat tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by brazilian design studio colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter.

since his first release in 1997, hanna has been a body of art with the agenda of putting ambiguous chord structures and harmonies into an electronic music envelope. the more popular works lying in the deep house and techno genre. the apron release called the never end, opens and closes with ambient pieces without drums or percussion with strange titles being and when which are improper adjectives or nouns that symbolize the ambiguity of the chords and beauty of the sound. the other 4 pieces nudge previous unique hanna minerva that makes this a special and impressive release.

duat (pronounced do-aht) was the realm of the dead in ancient egyptian mythology. the deity osiris was believed to be the lord of the underworld since he personified rebirth and life after death, being the first mummy as depicted in the osiris myth.the underworld was also the residence of various other gods along with osiris. the duat was the region through which the sun god re traveled from west to east each night, and it was where he battled apep, who embodied the primordial chaos which the sun had to defeat in order to rise each morning and bring order back to the earth. it was also the place where people s souls went after death for judgement, though that was not the full extent of the afterlife. burial chambers formed touching-points between the mundane world and the duat, and the akh, the effectiveness of the dead, could use tombs to travel back and forth from the duat. duat (or duatrecords) is a label by amin fallaha and r100

2021 repress!!! x-ray records catalogue is as under the radar as it is rich and ahead of its time. releasing between 1992 and 1994, most of the label s outputs were produced by raymond castoldi. although people primarily know castoldi for being the music director and organist in madison square garden, he also has a lesser known chapter of his life. in the early 1990s, raymond released 6 eps on his imprint x-ray records. by coupling his musical education with a four-on-the-floor club pattern, castoldi managed to create a jazzy vibe with spaceous sounds and keyboard jams, all coalescing into a relaxing atmosphere that would eventually become the signature sound of 90 s deep house. in partnership with castoldi, kalahari oyster cult delivers the goods once again: 11 tracks from the x-ray catalogue over a 3lp for your deejaying pleasure.
