we are extremely excited to announce our second double disk compilation retrospect on mood series! in 2020 and 2021, greyscale was full steam ahead on bringing new music to the cherished discography. in fact, in 2020, greyscale released over 20 eps just on the mood series itself! something we are very proud of and we wish to thank all the artists who have been involved up to this point. a hearty thank you from all at greyscale! as 2021 came we wanted to balance that out with a few retrospectives of the journey. and also, to revisit the cd format which we really enjoy doing compilations on. this installment looks back at mood series 21 thru 40 with a track from each ep! we hope this encourages you to check back with each original ep if you may have missed it and also to revisit some of your favorites. we would like to thank our supporters for being there to share the enjoyment and the excitement in what we are doing. your feedback has been tremendous and we want you to know we have many exciting and new projects coming (including some different ideas we are trying for the first time!).

jerome derradji received a call by one of chicago’s most renowned record dealer. it went like this: hey jerome, ive got all these reel to reel tapes of chicago house stuff. you want to take a look? less than 24 hours later, more than 160 reels were purchased and safely hauled back to the still music office and jerome got to work. in fact, these reels - that were lost for more than 20 years - contain some incredible stuff that we’ll be releasing in the years to come but right now it’s time to jack! around 50 of these tapes are dj mixes that were broadcasted on wgci and wbmx in the mid to late eighties mostly with the hot mix 5. so jerome decided to start a series of cassettes titled jack to share the absolute greatness of these mixes (and to raise enough funds to finance the transfer and licensing of the more crazy stuff that’s in the stack of reels) here is our first series with mixes from frankie knuckles, steve “silk” hurley, chicago mystery - devastating daryl and a few unknown mixes that were too essential to skip. these mixes were played on the radio only once and were lost until today. this series is an absolute window back to the heydays of chicago house music. all the mixes were professionally transferred and remastered to the best of our abilities.

dark entries digs deeper in to the archives of severed heads, one of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the australian post-punk independent music scene. they began in sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of ‘industrial’ noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. as the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. in 1986 the band released the 12” single “petrol” on nettwerk records. we’ve decided to shed light on the evolution of “petrol” with this ep showcasing four earlier incarnations of what became an instant synth pop classic.

die letzte fsoj vol. 11 ist schon fünf jahre her, die erste kam 1995 raus. ich habe das gefühl die zeit dreht zurück. ein bischen erinnern mich die tracks - vor allem die langsamen stücke, wie so mancher sound - an die ersten >future sounds of jazz< compilations. ich kann sagen, ich hatte eine gewisse leerstelle von 2007 bis ende 2010, sah weder die notwendigkeit, noch hatte ich lust empfunden, eine neue fsoj zu machen. es gab seit 2007 schon den ein oder anderen tollen track, aber nicht genug, um gleich eine compilation daraus zu zimmern. zugegeben war ich, wie viele andere, mehr dem disco-, edit- und deep house-fieber verfallen. bin ich immer noch, aber die musik fusioniert wieder stärker mit den vibes, die ich für fsoj suchte.
es begann in 2010, festigte sich in 2011, ein déjà-vu ritt mich plötzlich, der viel beschworene zeitgeist wehte wieder. haufenweise gute tracks, interessante projekte, die von der Ästhetik, vom sound und feeling den frühen 90ern, oder meinem gutdünken ihre reminiszenzen aufwiesen. immerhin sind seit der vol. 1 schon zwei generationen nachgewachsen, sagt man doch, daß alle sieben jahre eine neue generation entsteht. ich denke, die jüngeren projekte (z.b.: lo tide aus australien, anchorsong und ragout delapin beides projekte aus japan, scrimshire, letherette, laszlo, sepalcure, eden) die hier vertreten sind, spiegeln das eindrücklich wieder.

ironic? no, it’s dead serious: sally shapiro keeps on dreaming of barbie and ken. sometimes good things come to those who wait, as is the case with sally shapiro. one shouldn’t really imagine the bashful swede from göteborg, who never performs live, setting a new trend for turning down lucrative offers. and the thought that she is working on something hip, is most likely even a little eerie for her. after all, she s just into something, which she’s been doing since her childhood in the 1980s — singing songs in the style of her idol sandra (”maria magdalena“). if she hadn’t met her companion johan agebjörn, who despite his musical socialization with techno in the 1990s has been deep into italo disco for the past few years and is a collector of zyx records, sally’s passion for synthi songs and fairy-like female vocals would have remained private. however, johan was screwing together some italo-style songs when he asked sally (whose voice he’d only heard from a previous christmas party karaoke) if she would improvise on his soft keyboard tunes, their collaboration was a done deal.
subsequent to their first releases on the labels diskokaine and permanent vacation, sally shapiro suddenly found herself in the midst of the ultra-hip neo/italo-disco movement, which is especially big in scandinavia. why of all things on the northern peninsula, where one traditionally listens to black metal and indie rock played with legs spread apart, the peculiar, yet sunny disco music became such an export hit, stays one of the mysteries of the pop business. it’s a fact, though, that next to internationally celebrated norwegian neodisco-heroes lindström, prins thomas and todd terje, the lovely sally has become the scandinavian disco-act in the mean time.
