idle hands continues its quest to support new talent coming out of bristol with a fresh 12inch from local beatsmith crump. up to this point, he s been quietly slipping out razor sharp reduced house cuts on various artist releases for extended play and banoffee pies, but it s high time he had a 12inch of his to truly showcase his sound. the two tracks on this single tap into a consistent thread on idle, fusing the minimal sensibilities of contemporary european house music with a swung, dub-weighted presence fit for soundsystem consumption in the fair city we call home. much like previous releases from leif, christian jay and matt karmil, this is a demonstration of stripped down music loaded with swagger. -ice & spheres- pivots around an ear-snagging 2-step shuffle that cuts through any mix, but there s scores of subtlety woven in between the drums to reward the attentive listener. snatches of vocal, distant field recordings, low-blowing synth licks and other unidentifiable sonic matter lurk quietly in the mix to cast a spell on the sleep-deprived twitcher and warm-up head-nodder alike. sporting a brighter disposition thanks to the sheen of its chords, -mechanisms- provides a different vibe on the flip. the beat throws down with a rugged nod to west london broken styles while still tapping into that aforementioned continental 4/4 sensibility, injecting a refreshing variation into the densely populated minimal house landscape while maintaining the meditative qualities that keep the genre close to our hearts
bristols banoffee pies are back with their 11th edition. but as far it goes musically: this certainty aint bristol! starting out with the smoothly reduced tendencies of local lad christian jays rhotic which sounds inspired by the sounds of trelik, there s more of the same (albeit much dubbier and smoked out) on starry nite life courtesy of utrecht s larry de kat very paranoid afterhour vibes on this one! on the flip we ve got some more dubbed out fare courtesy of christian jay, again, who enlists a bit of help from crump on the rusty and dust coated gg3. all caps artist florist adds a touch of vancouver to proceedings with the squelchy dj tool blacky.
ultraphat remixes by reboot & michel cleis!!! reboot starts with a drivin percussive floormonster !! the flipside by michel cleis, whose hypnotic >la mezcla< ruled the last season in ibiza, is more complex in the depth of its sound: with sensual quotes from a hammond organ and a lot of sound effects on the vocal track, cleis celebrates a form of soul-soaked techno jazz, whose perfection and versatileness rather could have been expected from a producer from the likes of carl craig.
harrison crump bounces back with deeper, a full on gospel tinged song featuring dajae on vocals. driving rhythms with 80s percussive licks, along with lush strings, brass swells and a piano breakdown, propel a gritty sounding dajae to new heights, lifting you up on a warm feeling of well being. funk monkeys supply the remix, getting a tad tribal and freaky as they go in search of the k hole
the original track has an infectious almost commercial vocal sound with a definite felix edge. the two remixes bear down hard and transform the track into an edgey sound kind of in a goldfrapp/ fischerspooner vein, especially the alanis version
the crumpster yet again takes his very own hump recordings imprint to another level with the stunningly produced 'la la'. awsome beats lay behind a sintilising string pounded along by a typical crump booming bassline. both sides deliver a driving force and hypnotic groove making serious waves across dancefloors worldwide

"another hard-hitting funky house banger. burning up has a dark and dirty groove that would sound right at home on sondos, but it's got a lively female vocal to give it a rousing, disco feel. check out the ""crump daddy mix"" for the raw, windy city peak hour flavor."

bass culture reach that magnificent milestone of 50 releases with an extra special ep from someone who has become part of labels inner circle, the infallible mr g. set up in 2009 by paris stalwart djulz, bass culture records has maintained a consistently high level of music, crossing from techno into house and back again, always with a focus on quality over quantity. mr g delivers two special gems from his arsenal of weaponary to mark the 50th bsss culture release. the first, * transient* sees mr g in contemplative mood, taking a studied approach with this deep, soulful cut. softened pads are drizzled over a punchy low end, with tough, crisp beats supporting a stirring vocal which urges everybody to get up on their feet. the nineties organ lick gives it an almost sorrowful feel, and those pads continue to takes us up to the skies. a beauty. on the flip, * crumple zone* goes straight for the jugular with a driving b-line, alarming stabs and finger-clicking percussion to get that head nodding. combined with garbled, hypnotic vocal clips, its a mesmerising, eyes down cut for the late night heads. towards the latter part of the track, a naughty riff comes in and adds another layer of sleaze to proceedings. and there you have it, mr g proves yet again why he is such a all-round don and bass culture celebrates 50 releases with panache.
