the 4th edition in the acclaimed sterns edits series sees curator ben gomori open up the sterns music catalogue to other keen re-editors with brownswood / worldwide genius smbd (aka simbad) the first to step up to the plate. nigeria s segun adewale is sometimes referred to as the crown prince of jùjú music, but in the 1980s he developed a sound all of his own, which he called yo-pop. a mixture of jùjú, funk, reggae, afrobeat and jazz, its vibrant melange can be heard on his 1986 record ojo je , where both these originals are taken from. smbd delivers too superb flips of the title track a gritty funk-fuelled disco version with live bass, and a deliciously deep dub-house version. gomori, meanwhile, takes the haunting atewo-lara ka tepa mo se for an extended hypnotic, tribal trip. the stunning artwork comes from kofi ankobra, the son of radical white south africans who grew up in ghana and studied art at oshogbo, nigeria the place adewale himself was born. sterns edits is an official collaboration between african music stalwarts sterns music and londons ben gomori.

5 track ep. yamahas dx series of synthesizers has long been a source of inspiration for tom trago. the dx7, in particular, appeals to the dutch producer thanks to a unique sound that he describes as glassy but classic and icy. 34 years after it went on sale the same year as trago was born, interestingly the synthesizer’s sound still bristles with futurist appeal. trago, who was partially trained in how to use the dx7 by studio friends bok bok, sterac electronics and juju and jordash, has decided to pay tribute to this most distinctive of synthesizers by using it as inspiration for serene waters, his first ep for voyage direct since 2014 epic hidden heart of gold.

fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.

“here come the horns” is the second studio album by the hip hop group delinquent habits. formed in east los angeles in 1991, the group are known for their latin-tinged rap, which is both melodic and hardcore. their first self-titled album movlp1338 was executive produced by cypress hill member sen dog and featured guest appearances by sen himself as well as puerto rican new york city rapper hurricane g.
their second album, “here come the horns”, again featured sen dog as well as sen’s brother, pioneering latin rapper mellow man ace. the album was also produced by sen dog and paul stewart. music videos were made for “this is la” and “here come the horns”.
