last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

italian duos nice7 & dirty channels join forces for the first time to deliver the acid induced feelings ep on crosstown rebels. the release features two exceptional originals with torontos nathan barato bringing his signature heavy sounds into play for the remix. nicola daniele and cesare marocco aka nice7 are amongst the latest italian stars to emerge in dance music. since 2005, the year in which the two of them paired up, they have released on labels like noir music, get physical, remote area, suara, defected and gruuv. dirty channels are simone & leme, who started working together in 2008 after long single dj careers. releases soon followed for big labels such as josh wink s ovum, hot creations sub-label hot waves and culprit la as well as licenses on several defected compilations. nathan barato worked his way onto the world stage with releases on the likes of cajual, saved and hot creations. 2016 also saw him as resident for jamie jones paradise at dc10 in ibiza. here he delivers a punchy remix to dominate the dancefloor, centered around a hefty bassline, tight drum patterns and slick vocal cuts.

following the peace obscured ep by bokeh, his joint venture with anthone, katsunori sawa sets yet another mark on the weevil neighbourhood with his first full-length solo artist album on the label. titled secret of silence the eight tracks-spanning work of kyoto based sawa drills through japan techno, industrial breaks and noise while flirting with breakcore and a more aggressive take on dub.
katsunori sawa has been with the label for pretty much four years now with solo projects as well as joint ventures (besides the aforementioned bokeh, he’s also part of steven porter with his brother in arms yuji kondo with whom he also runs their own 10 label). his musical career reaches back another few years when he was writing and producing under eoc (short for enormous o clock), including an album for ai records.

back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

mysterious producer kian t is a crazy guy living in a lonely house on a top of a hill somewhere in italy. surrounded by a collection of rare old synths and vintage samplers, a little dog and the best red wine of italy. kian is making beats all day long. that’s his life. he started his career on toy tonics last year and now is back with an own ep - full of that fucked up, jazz influenced cut & paste house sound that is taking over the house world since last year. similar to his friends rhode & brown, fouk, nachtbraker or the guys around oye records in berlin he loves to create this special way of sampling old jazz records and using rare vintage synthesizers instead of digital computer sounds. just listen to a normal deep house records of the last years and compare it with the sound of the kian. using these old synths makes a big difference. you can hear it on every of his tunes: there is no cheap sound here everything is fat and has a very warm, personal, always easy to recognize sound-aesthetic: courtesy of the four synthesizers he uses: the korg polysix, the sequential prophet600, a roland juno 60, and the legendary oberheim matrix 6. and courtesy of the way he mixes his tracks: not in the laptop - but the old way: on a fat old mixing desk. thats why he has that massive sound.

catch recordings is one of the uks most interesting underground labels and to mark its 10th release it is back with another essential ep featuring four fresh tracks from swedish artist, random island records owner, inter gritty, who has previously released on labels like rise and deep moves. not to mention his own random islands works. since the birth of random island in 2012 he has carved out a singular sonic niche for himself with various solo eps and albums and also his partnership with nihad tule as ntta11.

nested structure is the first great circles release from artists outside of philadelphia. thrive are tetsuya yoshida and hitoshi kojima. they both grew up in the north kanto area of japan. they first met at the club run by tetsuya yoshida called sound a base nest, which is known as having the best sound system in the north kanto area. in 2007, the duo started their dj / producing unit thrive. previous releases have included a split 12inch with keia yano for japanese label struct, and recent solo releases by hitoshi for always human tapes and for his own label ambivalent deviation. this record almost didnt happen! — tetsuya and hitoshi were picking up great circles records in japan and, having periodically communicated with each other about music, they sent us the struct 12inch to check out. while cleaning out the back of the car a few months later, the presumably empty record mailer was about to land in the recycle bin when we fortunately discovered a demo cd of unreleased thrive material inside. we drove around listening to it and week later we agreed to release a 12inch. the music on the nested structure 12inch is dark, foreboding, even outwardly threatening. its hypnotic, textural and rhythmically complex.

there is a way to reach into the pulse of everything. it comes when ideas are stripped down to their bare essentials, blossoming then into massive monoliths that are designed with elegant simplicity. such is the path taken on our next limited 7inch, led by chronicle veterans staffan linzatti and new comer to the stable, arnuad le texier. entitled far behind the line, it embarks with a sense of soaring weightless that only arnaud can provide. radar is a statement of futurism, thrusting the listener forward and farther into the in nite. its sonic qualities mimic radio towers, satellites, and frequencies transmitted from the far reaches of the unknown.destination acts as the perfect counter, disrupting the psyche in all the right ways with dissonant wails and unearthly chimes. together they come as a distinct package, presenting an impressionistic interpretation of what may come, or what already has.

thats desire/here we are ep is a 12inch vinyl and digital release by fragile, wolfgang tillmans evolving band project that spans from early recordings in 1986 with bert leßmann to a full band ensemble made up of a group of musicians in new york in 2016. the double a-side ep opens with thats desire, a collaboration with the new york rapper ash b. the song evokes associations with dfa, daf and a queer talking heads. in a spontaneous action ash b. takes over the mic and raps over tillmans heartfelt lyrics, originally written in 1985, combined with a funky bass line by thomas roach. the experiment results in a driving indie-dance sensation about the pleasure and pain of getting lost in ones own desire.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

the number of bad luck is the number of good luck in our world. antoine harispuru aka golden bug is back on lddlm with what has been a constant night hit for ivan smagghe since he magically received it. we are very happy to share it with you. progress feat. diego holdez kind of defies categorisation, and blows the walls of the classic slow downed clocks of golden bug. we d describe it as vocal funk? you may describe it the way you want. ask your girlfriend, she seems to love it. on remix duty, miami come berlin bad boy danny daze a rest from the big room for a pounding omnidisc version that will slowly burns through any leather jacket, very corrosive stuff. physical disco is classic golden bug, a demented industrial pinball machine of some kind. whilst supernova is that exact machine played by a retro-futurist vocoder robot. think aux 88 played at 33rpm and you ll be as close as you can.

no bad days is back for round 2. ‘in the galleria’ slides in with dreamlike pads and a real euphoric feel to the whole track. just right for those balearic sunsets. second on the a side is ‘celestial bodies’ - a melodic freestyle jam that makes us feel like we’re down at the arcade playing ‘out run’ on a dusty mega drive.
over to the flip we start off with the title track, ‘lunar waves’ beginning with a tougher feel it hints at a hardware acid workout... but half way in roberto hits you with those dreamy pads again and just has us in his hands for that synth solo at the end! rounding off the ep perfectly is ‘when u come around’, a real ‘end of summer sitting down at the park with your mates’ kind of track...mmm...

grab-bag 12” ep of electro, idm, breaks and house from montreal via ottawa producer riohv (aka braden thompson), which follows up the similarly map-jumping 1080-released “moondance” cassette from back in 2014. finding more confidence and proficiency in his own abilities as a producer, thompson was able to have a lot more fun and subsequently revise and update his sound to reflect his own tastes in records. the ep was made in one burst in montreal over the winter and spring. on “green room, it comes down to creating what he wants to hear—atmosphere through dreamy or moody pads, layered percussive elements, to pay tribute to the euphoria of early rave music.

mannheim duo ho do ri s lost in betty s ford is an exercise in restraint with the ep delving into the deeper realms of house music. elotrans kick things off with its shuffling percussion lending the track more of a jacking vibe. high level boost ups the energy whilst still retaining a distinctly left field vibe whilst k for the models delves into murkier realms in a superbly wonky way. back problems rounds things off with a sub-aquatic ride reminiscent of baby ford at his most coherent.
