la rioja in spain may not be thought of as a hotbed of avant garde techno and electronica, but psychoskunk has been quietly issuing an uncompromising salvo of proudly underground releases since as far back as 2004. error etica, an alias from label boss victor martinez, is at the controls for this tenth vinyl release on the label, and he s sounding as proudly left of centre as ever. diatonic scale locks into an insistent groove, but the real magic of the track lies in the grubby notes punching their way around the drums, capped off with artful distortion that gives a wonderful bite to the production. tetratonic scale keeps things fuzzy but blows the rhythms wide open for a more poised, patient kind of techno incantation. r2pis remix of the track meanwhile clamps it back in order with a stern beat and a slow-release minimalism guiding the evolution of the track.

gost zvuk continues its journey to the depth of today s russia experimental music scene with the debut ep from infx, yet another emerging artist from country s capital moscow. young muscovite prefers to work on the margins of popular electronic music genres, using the complex broken rhythmical architecture to create his own kind of introverted club tracks for highly observant and thoughtful listeners. the resulting music is an ever-changing, multifaceted and polychromatic living organism with a constantly mutating structure — a truly unique piece of art that should not be overlooked.

when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

up next on amsterdam’s format label is a four-tracker featuring original cuts and remixes by matrixxman, echologist and label boss juan sanchez himself.
the fourteenth format release is definitely one not to miss out on, as it offers material from some of today s most sought-after techno heads. up first is expiration, a joint effort from matrixxman and echologist. this one combines matrixxman’s signature bass and echologist’s one-of-a-kind dub techno flavors across a very trippy canvas. format’s juan sanchez follows with a dark and synth-heavy rework of the track. on fokus, juan displays a more melodic cut propelled by a playful groove. closing things off, matrixxman and echologist turn fokus into a crushing techno track filled with sweeping fx.

peak:shift (simon flower) returns with a new ep on furthur electronix after two years since his last release on temporary state. furthur electronix are excited to release -standard candles- on the label, with four tracks of the deepest kind. all cuts were previously unreleased, and limited to 200 copies.

superb, heartwarming and spirit lifting gospel disco modern soul 45 first released in 1978 on philadelphia united records. calvin carr & company are enriched with sensitivity and alive with the spirit. the kind of gospel that sweeps all over you and runs through your veins. there is always a sense of inadequacy when attempting to describe just how good something is. words like exciting, inspiring and original come to mind but as always you will have to decide for yourself

for russian electronic music, mikhail chekalin is not only a major character, who has affected the scene’s establishment and development, but also a kind of symbolic figure. his music has been praised by many in the west - from journalists and critics of all kinds to frank zappa and karlheinz stockhausen, while in moscow chekalin’s name was excluded from the official cultural agenda for a long time: he was accused of propaganda of foreign pro-western aesthetics and up until the end of the 80’s wasn’t allowed to release his works or travel abroad. this, however, didn’t interfere with him recording dozens of innovative electronic compositions and contributing greatly to the development of unofficial soviet art in general - for example, providing sound design for the famous exhibitions of twenty moscow artists on malaya gruzinskaya or arranging the first audiovisual performances on a specially constructed light organ.
however, just like all great artists, mikhail himself prefers to focus not on personal achievements, but on creativity. i don’t have a biography - only a discography - this quote of the author may become an entry point of sorts into the compilation presented. this archival collection of works recorded within the period from 1978 to 1987 are chekalin’s multigenre experiments ranging from spatial music (in essence, ambient’s precursor) to more contemporary synthesizer and post-symphonic compositions.

o phase presents two striking, no-nonsense techno cuts for token85. each side of suspended animation delivers the special kind of face melter that manages to remain sincere without being overly self-serious. stroke b favours the sensational approach, with a bright and playful lead playing against a hi-hat frenzy in the breakdown. stroke c is more introverted on surface level, but offers pure chaos instead from its depth.

milanese pair francesco mingrino and marcello carozzi have already asserted themselves in the field of adventurous disco experimentation via two sterling outings on the highly rated bordello a parigi, and now they prove their calibre once again with an ep on the ever-vital tusk wax. there s a delicate tone to younger than me on this record, from the heartstring tugging melodics of easy rolling acid throbber -mubai garden tea- to the subtle synth pop touches of -arizona dream.- -manchester s teen- is a tougher affair with the kind of slow filter sweeping lead hook that rave dreams are made of, while -near to bali- finishes the ep on an ominous beatless note. zombies in miami turn in a remix of -mubai garden tea- that maintains the romantic mood of the original while injecting a little more dancefloor heat into its bones.

killer, cosmic leaning german funk-rock moves here on the repress tip courtesy of epsilon, a 4 piece from marburg, just north of frankfurt. that kind of grooved out, downtempo dusted glam type of gear that one might hear dj harvey play at wrong o clock in the morning, or something that loda might flip into mid-set that would have everyone scratching their head in disbelief. one of a handful of cool jams the epsilon guys cranked out, remastered and repressed on a lovely, handy 45. sounds heavy. essential listening for those of a more left-field disposition. dig it.

following on from angophora s beautiful long player, ken oath is back with another full length lp from low flung. friends of the label will note that this is his third release for ken oath, and it s a fittingly mature and expansive statement for a debut lp. perhaps mature is the wrong word here, as all his brilliant ideas are backed up by a sense of whimsy that betrays his playful side. the music strikes a balance between styles and spaces that could perfectly soundtrack moments at home, in the club, and in the liminal spaces between. danny s efforts at writing dance music still contain the idiosyncratic approaches of his ambient works: the deadly deep subs and endless echo spirals on -rising damp- sounds like someone trying to piece together a drum & bass track after an off-hand conversation about the genre. he s transmuted the propulsive energy of jungle into something no less dynamic, full of stops and starts and sonic pressure but flush with space. -tarp climber- is at heart a rollicking digi-dub. the more ambient moments of the lp are equally captivating - the glassy tones of -frozen coat- sound like a space-age ensemble soundtracking a floating lounge on a suite of glass instruments, while -ocean grove- blends field recordings and dreamy synthesizer melodies to create an uncanny sense of place that unroots you from wherever you re listening. there s a heavy emphasis on danny s collaborators as well - the cold emotion duo is reprised on the spacey ‘hills hoist’. closer -bacchus marsh- is a collaboration with prophets, a cross-state ensemble that defy any easy categorisation. the music here flirts with jazz and minimalism but with a dubwise production aesthetic to produce something that recalls khan jamal s visionary -drum dance to the motherland- in spirit and practice, but this whole album sounds as otherworldly and one-of-a-kind as the aforementioned lp.

patricia koketts sound is shrouded in a veil of mysticism. the brainchild of lithuanian gediminas jakubka, diabel’s metallic heartbeat underlies a magical superstructure that evokes some kind of dmt infused trip. or possibly even some kind of ancient ritual, where one is intoxicated by serpents blood. guided by repetitive drum patterns, it creates a slow joint dance that opens the path towards transcendence.

this record comes with a version for every time and mood of a club night: jo pariotas cut of the original mix is the ideal warm up tune. flowing on a synthline that calls mike huckabys waldorf to mind, it is sweet and driving at the same time. the original mix by loveits own nico brun might be called „casual affair, but comes rolling on a phat wonky rhode that brings the groove! between the crunchy drums, a relaxed vocal snipped and warm synth unfold like the first rays of sunlight. the jk & lds reduction is punchy, minimal and dubby - with its pull and release kind of melody and the stuttered vocal sample it works perfect as a peak time dj tool. finally, the a.s.s. amnesia returns mix is something else entirely… you just have to experience it in its full 8 min breakbeat aphex twin-like glory. - morri313

after kicking off with a selection of artists pushing hard on the serious electro tip, latvian label electronic leatherette is back once again with another round of smartly chosen protagonists plying their machine funk wares. plant43 are the most established here, dealing in immaculate drexciyan funk of the most aqueous kind. gestalt is equally on killer form with ecosystem while maroje t taps up the noir mood to perfection on la confidential. jack roland s crafty osmotic potential is a smart b2 reach loaded with detail and production chops while exploring a more mysterious atmosphere in the process.

the 6th release of ville nouvelle, music for five post cards brings together five artists from across the globe, both old and new to the label. the compilation materialises as a musical ballad, 40 minutes long, and evoking feelings of travel and the contemplation of nature. in the continuity of ville nouvelle’s exploration of music and graphic design, each track is transformed into a respective postcard by the french artist alexis jamet, who was given carte blanche for this exercise. the project appears as a personal mosaic of evocations reflecting both in image and music a kind of international feeling.

opening track in the b kicks off proceedings in no uncertain fashion. it s 100% wall shaker material, the type of techno music best paired with strobe lights and towering speaker stacks. it mesmerises with its low-slung undulating bassline and detroit rhythms before giving way to some riotous old school essex stabs and sharp claps. no messing, this is a certified 3 am red light burner! track 2 chocolate biscuit accelerates proceedings! beginning with unfussy drums and a robotic, bleep-heavy melody driving it off into a wonderfully off-kilter direction. its arpreggio d rhythms may be brutish and wrestle a growling sense of menace out of the track, but the overall feel, however, suggests considerable care and attention has been paid to make it sound this way. there s clearly an uncommon musicality at play here to make something this complex feel so simple. the bpm drops next on jenny s hall but from the offset, there s enough funk and thrust in the motorised synth line to get bodies gently grooving without the beauty getting lost in the slower loop. this is blissed out, psychotropic techno - the kind of track where it feels like you re floating and falling at the same time, but all the while making sure you still remain fit for purpose on the dancefloor. ian blevins takes on remix duties this time and the berlin-based dj/producer offers up a sleek peak-time banger that fizzes, bubbles and percolates. he gives the rhythm on jenny s hall less space to swing and ties it to a tight motorik beat turning it into a slice of shiny, modern techno but with extra shoulder-checking force. its vibe drawing from a sense of outsider-party fun with a wry smile, and a knowing wink running throughout before bringing the package to a suitably left of field crescendo.

capofortuna is a duo made up of legendary bologna-based house maestro, dj rame and multi-instrumentalist ricky cardelli from rimini. perhaps our housiest release to date. crush on you is an ep of particularly sophisticated forward thinking dance music. with glorious live instrumentation and joyous arrangements this is the kind of record that is going to slip right into many dj s collections. don t sleep on this one.

phil gerus is a natural musical talent who oozes sound from every pore. fusing together cassette pop, disco, soul, r&b and funk, his sounds are effortless but hugely emotive and have come out on labels like sonar kolkektiv, manmakemusic (george fitzgerald’s label), futureboogie and true romance. growing up in moscow, phil studied classical piano and was heavily influenced by his parents’ music tastes, including jazz records of oscar peterson, bill evans, and keith jarrett, it is these classy vibes that permeate his own creations. phil has played around the world at leading clubs like japan’s dommune, studio 80 (amsterdam), mojo club (hamburg) and various hotspots in europe and russia. phil is also a regular guest on radio shows around the planet and is considered as an artist on the rise.

clandestino head joe morris is next up on wonder stories, imparting the kind of sun-kissed discoid meditation the label and its listeners lap up. morris is sounding confident and cool on cloud nine, using vintage drum machine patterns and fuzzy synth lines to impart a sweet-natured groove that reaches skywards. contrasting the blissed out original, max essa brings a little more bite to the table with his shimmering electro-disco version, while coyote preaches his balearic vision on the b1 remix. label boss aimes keeps things smooth and steady with a deep house version of cloud nine for all dancefloor dreamers to get lost in.

ltd copies, screen printed sleeve by al white & house of traps, this marks the first new vinyl release from echospace detroit this year with all the content lovingly re-mastered in echospace, detroit, usa & cut @ deepgrooves. an unreleased classic from the vaults emerges with newly remastered content from radius s celebrated -obsolete machines- double album & two of the most epic creations featured on the -interpolation tapes- cd series, available for the first time ever on vinyl format. many of the songs featured in this project were initially sent to rod modell & mike schommer shortly after they launched their brilliant deepchord label in 2001. (recorded from 1993-2000) they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and redesigning these masters. we truly hope you enjoy reliving these magical times of music, very inspired by all that was happening in those years, there was just something in the air, an undeniable energy, long may it live on..

we are happy to introduce a new release and a new project from ben vedren and chez damier, a new collaboration that has been in the making for some time now. side aa1 presents a unique sound in its vibe, kind of a minimal track. the french discussion/vocal in the background adds another dimension. you don t need to speak the language to understand what s going on, but you must wonder at some point: do i understand french or is it the music that made me understand them? an -organ- sound intervenes towards the end bringing power and light to the hall. it s eleven minutes of pure music! while -aa- is composed of two different remixes of a different track, -berlin nights in paris- it can probably be called the house anthem. it starts strong with some acid sound and is filled with a lot of wonderful elements. like a gourmet meal, you wonder if the track shouldn t have been at least three times longer to satisfy the gluttony of the listen. the techno remixes of the track. it s a perfect example of detroit meets house. techno track can, with no doubt, feed and drive the dance floor. no need for more than five words to describe it – it s a serious techno track.

what can be said about the girl whose greatest friend was the mist? it can be said she was never short of adventure, for each time the mist cleared, it had a new surprise. rabbits and rocking horses came out of hats the size of hills, armies of ants played in marching bands, deer danced, giraffes juggled, elephants tap-danced atop the moon, flowers bloomed in the sky, and stars shone on the ground, because, why cant down be up? with the mist there was always the kind of hocus pocus that twisted itself into a pocus hocus, a shenanigan or a hijinks so high it could not be jinxed, but it had to be jumped. by a fish flown by a boy from out of town. it was enough to make her giddy with happy.

heady, astute, deep techno and ambient from blue veil, a new musical project from danny clancy. blue veils debut ep reveals gorgeously textured techno on tracks like wherethetimegoes and citizen score, as well as crafting some tender ambient passages on cuts like night czar and a kind of adventure. the ep will be released on dichotomy records, a new imprint, dedicated to refined electronic music. the labels ambition is to allow artists to explore dichotomies through their work, as they span sonic landscapes from pure ambient to techno, and other abstract dance sounds in-between. there will be a strong attention to the visual presentation of the label, with all artwork and photography also created by label boss danny clancy. with the next release lined up from ahu, and more to follow from there, the agenda for dichotomy records looks hugely promising indeed.

a producer, dj, nts radio host and label head, finn has come of age representing manchesters underground dance music scene over the last four years. showing up with a timely debut for defected that will stop you in your tracks, hes now turning heads way further afield from the north west. this 7inch features an exclusive instrumental. the formula for sometimes the going gets a little tough is beautifully simple, exposing an intuition beyond the producers years. at 135bpm its a straight pumper in theory, playing directly into the hands of festival sets over the summer, with its vocal loop and heartfelt lyrics it becomes so much more. gathering over 2m spotify streams on its initial release via tom leas london imprint local action, the track also received radio support from the likes of annie mac, skream and monki and support from djs as diverse as tqd, diplo and martin garrix. the appeal is universal and the execution is perfect, making this the kind of life affirming record that 2018 needs.

seven davis jr proved once again he s one of the brightest lights in authentic soul-soaked deep house with attitude when he released love from the other side back in 2016. now he s pulled together a strong cast of cats to offer up remixes of key album tracks, with scintillating results. davis jr s heady atmosphere is maintained in all of the versions, from marcel vogel s funky broken beat treatment on -99 candles- to the woozy bump of the teflon dons version of -this weekend-. watch out for the tracky heat of coflo s remix of -me like you- as well - just the kind of lean, mean, sexy jam that will get bodies heaving in the right party spot.

atangana records’s back with its second release, once again a long-awaited reissue, once again digging into the caribbean music with a classic track from les maxel’s (from guadeloupe), “le retour de toto”. as usual, the remastered tune comes with a remix and a b2 “just” coming with the remixer’s add parts. originally out in 1976, “le retour de toto” on disques debs international is a brilliant dancefloor killer, magnifying the cross-world between zouk and latino music, biguine and calypso. you can hear from the prominent hi-hat all the energy of the dance moves you could improvise on that kind of joint. with a lot of break, wonderful horns and backing vocals, “le retour de toto” will enjoy all the summer dancefloor and airwaves for some time

for its third release, here to hell welcomes melbourne (via adelaide) veteran, rambl, and his incredible groover “doss”. this third release on the label happened purely by surprise, and what a discovery! the track itself is no accident, but the signing took place after a chance encounter. richard campbell aka rambl, who is one of melbourne’s best and most consistent djs since the last two decades, had developed a small cult following of viewers via facebook, where he had been providing live video coverage of australia’s wild weather in a kind of comedy-weatherman format. once these updates caught our attention, the magical facebook algorithm placed all of his content at the top of our feed.

in ancient lddlm times, blddlm even, belgium could well have been the freaky house and ecstasy center of the world. if only we could remember all the lost hours. but after all, as the brussel saying goes: its friday, tomorrow is tuesday. at lddlm, we try not to reminisce, that was just setting the mood.we are very happy to welcome arthur johnson in our non-fold, a young producer from liege via marseille and la dame noir. aj is amongst those ever mutating artists, his u-turns slowly composing a real personality, and one fitting our contrarian attitude. in a way perfect stranger reminds us of a good 90’s farley/heller remix, not so much camp fire island than almost sweaty late night trancer. we love those tracks that do not fit our ethos a priori but that we can’t stop playing. cosmo vitelli is a long time family friend and he beams up this stranger through the axis into some kind of romantic italo-german anthem. ballada and secretary discordia show a different side of aj, a dub march echoing dif juz and a percussive machine funk number. we sincerely hope aj keeps on straying for the best, his way being our way.

fold edition, nebraska fires up his own friends & relations label once again to take a trip into the strain of lilting, summery deep house that has previously fitted in so well on rush hour, mister saturday night and more. this time around nebraska is getting the remix treatment from an all star cast, leading in with the woozy, soul-soaked shuffle of session victim s treatment of -pintxos.- mr beatnick keeps things suitably deep when tackling -rat boogie,- all laid back disco patter and filtered funk, before marcel vogel goes one step further on -keep what ya got- and rolls out slow and juicy funk of the raunchiest kind.

like many electronic artists, ryan lee west aka rival consoles spent his early years experimenting with idm, glitch and dance, but one consistent element in his musical journey has been his desire to create a more organic, humanised sound. through these experimentations he has found a process of producing electronic music that feels close to this urge. west engages his hands directly with instruments and is very selective about what he then records into the computer. he reduces musical parts even further, leaving enough space around the sound for it to breath.
