italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.

there are many ways for a band or an artist to compile an album: some make it in a week and some let the process go on longer. the latter approach does often mean that that the record will not be better than had it been recorded and mixed within a short amount of time, rather the contrary. however, there are those albums that just could not be made within in a week or a month, those compilation of songs that needed the time to melt together to form an album. fontäns third album titled fontän, released on hoga nord rekords is that kind of an album. put the opening track mangsebung on, then stay with the record until the closer shadows rings out and you will go clear, sharp, and mildly messed up by the listening experience because this is an extremely well directed trip in mind-altering music! this album needed time to reach such heights.

here again another japanese artist does his debut release on bosconi extra virgin, daisuke kondo from okayama drops a delicious 4 tracks ep featuring a special reinterpretation from italian duo nas1, not new to the bosconi fam, who also appeared on wild oats and more recently released on berlin label money sex. -roof dancer ep- starts with the subtle and hypnotic house jam of -everybody-, a groovy and bouncey deep house track enriched with funky elements and delayed keys going all along the track, in real daisuke s trademarked style.on a side second cut there s the -roof dancer- tune who gives the title to the ep, a funky and extra warm broken beat jam dense of organic latin percussions and jazzy vibes..and it feels like a real band jamming on a beach! nas1 rework for -exit- opens the b side with a pumping, tribalish and unconventional freestyle jazz-house jam for your freaked out moments on the floor or even a -stand up!- track for your opening sets, something for theo s fan..the ep ends with the chuggy beat of -passion-, a track which reminds some of best moodymann s classic atmospheres or even those soulful loungey tunes from the late 90 s. tasteful beats for your summer!

having emerged from the murky waters of the tape scene on always human and summer isle, strahinja arbutina follows up on a first 12- for bank records nyc with this sterling sure shot for the excellent bliq label. there s a range of styles displayed across fox venom, but the tracks are held together by the immersive, droning atmospheres that linger in the background of the productions. -fox venom- lurches under a heavy cloud like the best subterranean techno should, while -teabagging mystery- gets locked into a deathly minimal groove. this is music for the graveyard shift, although deemonlover s -so solid mix- of -fox venom- does inject some wild breakbeat action into the gothic surroundings

after one year of high energy industrial and punk-leaning music, kess kill presents something slightly more contemplative: the vinyl debut of the swedish act grand mal x. the solna based duo started in 2010 and was first known from the cassette scene, which was also where we stumbled across their work. drawing from a long and wide palette of influences — from osho dynamic meditation and eu highways, to artists like suicide, coil and rune lindblad — their music breathes an ethereal yet catchy air, a difficult line to tread. the fact that one of the members is active at the legendary experimental ems studios in stockholm might be the reason for the unusual amount of depth and maturity, steering the music sternly away from the plainly accessible. opener ‘late night call’ is a brooding and growling number perfect for setting the mood in any room or occasion needing an infusion of sweaty sexual energy. ‘speed of light’, the record’s most up-tempo song, leans towards both synth pop and electro-punk. on the flip ‘the trip’ does the exact opposite of the opener, winding things down both emotionally and energy wise, replacing sex appeal with lithium-lined angst, not unlike alan wilder at his deepest. ending the ep is ‘rabbit’, an unadulterated trip down a similarly named hole for those who feel like falling. summed up it’s the most abstract but surprisingly catchy kess kill release to date, an essential beacon in grasping the label’s concept.

anglo-cherokee-japanese skateboarder turned musician korey dane returns with his second album chamber girls. influenced by the likes of t.s. eliot, tom waits, karen dalton, the beatles and the stones, and more, chamber girls was recorded almost completely live at l.a.’s analog time capsule valentine recording studios, searing instinct and experience direct to tape. dane produced everything himself, too, except for a quick assist from legendary producer tony berg (x, public image ltd.) on one song, and he was inspired by the deceptively simple ethos he’d internalized while making youngblood: pursue greatness. “writing a song that you know someone might skip over later is sacrilege,” he says. instead, he wanted every song on chamber girls to feel not only live but alive, too, with that go-forbroke spirit that animates everything he says, does, or sings: “i’m writing all the time,” he says. “i’ve lived by a line a day sometimes. i try and stop when it’s good. if you try and simplify it down to its bare elements ... it’s truly a redemptive act.”

what does teen spirit smell like, anyway? it might smell something like noise addict. like the real life stars of some sort of choose-your-own-adventure book about pursuing rock stardom, few bands ever led a more charmed existence, springing from the sydney suburb of bondi into seemingly overnight international fame as friends and collaborators of sonic youth, fugazi, and the beastie boys. through a combination of relentless drive, luck, and an admirable lack of self-doubt, noise addict spanned puberty to surpass the haters and join radio birdman and nick cave as a strange but permanent piece of australian punk history.

eric fetcher has been given the honour of contributing to invite’s choice and does so with a four-track banger for its ninth output.
kaissa’s neurotic synth and wobbly bass combined with its forceful hi-hat open this ep in a stripped-down fashion, which makes it perfect to build tension and make transitions in any dirfections while mixing. mephisto continues on the path chosen with coherent and hypnotising synthesis, whilst keeping a funky kind of feel due to the very present kick and hi-hats, yet has a darker feel to it. deep blue on the b-side is a more four-to-the-flour track with a rousing synth and banging hi-hat, perfect for lifting up a crowd! cray blitz combines hypnotising bleep-like sounds and a mind-blowing string with droning low-end sounds. hypnotising like the other tracks - but with more drive - this ep is closed down. eric fetcher showcases his take on techno which fits perfectly between both modern day and oldschool techno!

adult only 47 has arrived with pierre codarin dropping some funk on 3 originals alongside a remix from dan ghenacia and chris carrier.........a1 telefunk kicks off things and rolls with a wonky filtered drum pattern picking up a real swung groove before a subtle vocal is then joined by a bass line can only be described as something from a late night jazz workout in the deepest darkest realms of the parisian capitol...detroit style pads and intricate keys keep this groove interesting through out the track pushing it forward more and more with sweet drum edits and skips that are all to known from pierre. a2 morning eyes twists things up with trippy spacey pads and a very nice 303 sitting low in the mix. driving drums make this track work well as it draws to a stripped back moment where the 303 really comes through and does its thing. this really is 6 minutes of a funk fueled adult only workout!b1 telefunk remix dan ghenacia and chris carrier dan and chris bring their twist on pierre s telefunk coming through with a very interesting take on things producing a very tight rework........... b2 evening juice grooves along with a nice warped synth stabs, a bass line that throws it self around the room, the drum pattern keeps things energetic through out alongside a faintly obscure vocal fitting well in the track, evening juice brings the soul and finishes the ep nicely making this overall a very solid package from pierre.

nice price deal !!! chus duran is back to funkdango recordings and teams up with the labelhead, carlos lamar aka marker. chus & carlos, c&c deliver one of the most played and hottest tracks from this summer in ibiza. a minimal electro masterpiece full of crispy beats and crazy rhythms. on the b side, mr sasse from mood music does his first collaboration with this hot team remixing the original track and taking it into a more acid electro journey. brilliant work !!!

one of the rarest funk 45s in existence and the rarest 45 on ellis taylor s forte label flipped with a previously unreleased acetate (has a little bit of background noise but what you gonna do when there is only one copy in the world, we did out best to make it sound good and it does). both tracks are stone cold deepfunk killers. super black is from the tapes and sounds amazing (better than the original) so go destroy a club with this.

for their 12th release, fasaan recordings has dug deep into the techno underground of malm and found the drum machine anthems of frankie twilight. not your usual techno producer, the woman behind this alan vega-esque alias does not subscribe to any genre definitions. having played in a berlin-based punk band as well as acting as resident dj at a members only 78 rpm jazz club, to say her tastes are diverse is quite an understatement. the diy spirit is however a red thread throughout the 4 tracks of her synergy ep for fasaan

next up on aus music is the return of label boss will saul working alongside long term label favourite komon. together the duo line up harmonise - a smouldering single that comes backed up with an almighty pair of remixes from osgut ton mainstay nick höppner and analogue aficionados juju & jordash. the title track kicks things off with glowing, interweaved synths and a pattering tom line. vocal snippets and trippy delays suffuse a purposeful bass tone before the 101 dub version rolls out with punchy drums and a sharp, darting acid line. berghain regular nick höppner then does what he does best with his remix in building a rich, hypnotic groove that steadily develops with intricacy and depth. dekmantel and golf channel regulars juju & jordash then drive a warped, rumbling synth line through spacey atmospherics rounding off another fine addition to the catalogue.

albuquerque s plastik people continues to be the leading bastion for hard swinging garage house in the deep south. this time label boss marc cotterell has linked up with dominic balchin as tuff vibes to bring the classically informed heat to the people who just cant get enough of that warm, soulful sound. leave me cold does the absolute opposite of its title thanks to the oodles of piano, organ and more melodic flexing besides. jazzy 99 is a more accurate guide with its sassy sax licks and vibing chords, and then rhythm of the vibe pushes the tempo up for a purely dancefloor minded workout.

picking up right where ep 1 left off, ep 2 kicks things off with a bang. first up is catz n dogz and yotam avnis for blakkat a high pace burner ideally suited for dance floors from panorama bar to under the leds of watergate and every club in-between. the duo return with the bright version of afterglow for the second cut on ep 2 and aptly titled, it pushes an intense, glitter filled ride to its limits. embarking onto the b-side, o.a. peas from heavy hitter eats everything & lord leopard take a trip down memory lane with a heavily sample based feel good tune that will absolutely demolish dance floors worldwide. rounding out the ep is a final collaboration between catz n dogz and reno wurzbacher with ma people and its by far the smoothest and most laid back tune of the bundle, but never does it let you rest as a mesmerizing groove and lush atmospherics tell a deep, complex tale of late nights and early mornings.

alek stark is responsible for some of the finest boutique vinyl releases available. his 808 boxes, dmx drum machine replica and plexi-glass sleeves for fundamental records are legendary in the electro fraternity. starks attention to detail in everything he does is particularly apparent in his music - his tracks are all first class analogue electro. he pulls no punches on this e.p. with heavy 808 percussion alongside a myriad of modular noise and synth workouts. cold, robotic and reminiscent of early psyche / bfc with deep chorused pads creating an off-world dystopian theme that runs throughout this release

2017 repress , just in time for summer, andrés aka dj dez hits back with three perfect house cuts. the andrés formula is fairly simple, grab a sample, flip it, add warm basslines and drums. thing is, nobody does it quite like dez. the title track here is a soulful rave-up spinning on an indelible vocal chop and vamping pianos. -chevy status- is true to its name, a chugging mid-tempo hip-hop/house tune perfect for rolling down woodward avenue, or if you like, a street in your town. -pluck away,- meanwhile, takes some jangling, tropicalia guitars and lets them ride into the sunset, closing out a near perfect record which only builds anticipation for the detroit man s fourth full-length, andres iv.

bqd40.3 features some new label signings that hint at the label’s future musical direction. first up is giuliano lomonte, who delivers an unbeatable groove courtesy of “reflections”. on the b is jorge gamarra & gulp from the sur label collective, who weave a tight combination of broken beats and 4x4 rhythms on “valve”, a track that comes complete with swelling synths and a modern, house flourish. closing off the package is another member of the sur collective crew, formas, whose track, “prisma”, really does take the listener on a proverbial journey. a real synth-infused masterpiece, it’s proof indeed that the next chapter in the brouqade story looks set to be every bit as exciting as what’s come before.

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!

the remixed tracks from ascetic’s second album ‘everything is becoming’ are a collision between industrial techno, ebm influenced bass lines, doom and dark ambient. four berlin based artists: ancient methods, phase fatale, unhuman & luna violenta offer their take on the two opening tracks ‘utterings’ and ‘exegesis’ from the album. roared vocals, guitar both jagged, creepy and ambient, live drums and samples are all melted down and reformed into at times recognizable and at times wholly alien compositions, ancient methods, phase fatale and unhuman offer different approaches to techno punishment while luna’s interpretation is a cacophonous build that explodes into sonic abstraction. this ep is a perfect example of what berlin does so well, where genres that share aesthetic values feedback, overlap and inspire.

after starting out with eps showcasing tracks by various artists, invite’s choice is back with a 3 track ep by drafted.
the ep is opened by detached with it’s dominating, repeating tom/percussive low-end sound. the frequential spectrum is filled up by other percussive elements and reverb-filled effects, which give the track a spacious feel. oxidian starts out in your face with it’s droning and repetitive synth. the track evolves into an abstract apogee with intense synthesis before it breaks down again, allowing for a smooth mix to be made. sphere closes down this 3-track ep on the b-side and does so with lots of fast changing hi-hat and ride patterns and one sharp sounding synthesizer, which makes it a perfect b-side closing track. once again a great showcase of sustainable modern day electronic music by invite’s choice!

jean-louis huhta and joachim nordwall are high boys. together they share a deep interest in old school techno acid, aswell as electronic experimentalism and insane electro-acoustics. they want to make music that will mess with your mind, and make you move while your skull is melting. together they have served in the ritual rock group the skull defekts for over a decade but this is their first own project together. huhta also does is killer project dungeon acid amongst other important things, and nordwall runs his ideal label since 98 and makes electronic music alone and with other heads. high boys will not change the musical or political climate but they will make you feel... different.

james dexters star has been rising for a while now - the young brit turning out killer tracks regularly on the back of hugely well received dj sets. on his second outing for dessous recordings, dexter does what he does best - four slices of deep, funky and vibing house music for the floor. lead track drift is typical of dexters flair for subtle, edgy sounds, wrapped inside a warm and inviting groove. elements come and go, but the shuffling, infection feel runs throughout. take me is a more upfront vibe with a seriously bumping groove - dexter clearly well versed in the roots of house music from chicago. ‘whose rules ?’ is a snappy, bright and lively production, with a sub bass that will troubler some of the world’s best club systems in the coming months. the light, jazzy vocals offsets the groove perfectly - sure to be a big tune for a wide variety of djs. the last track of the release is disco deep - and it pretty much does exactly what it says - a swung, groovy feel punctuated by disco claps and balearic flourishes that will sound as good on the beach as in the basement.

slam city jams is back with its second release, produced by young brussel based artist kassett. this multi-talented dude not only makes great music, but also does visual arts (look at that amazing fanzine coming with the record) and has his own label & artist collective called midlife. kassett aka gavin vanælst isn’t about genres, but about emotions when it comes to his music. however, asking him what he would call the sound he makes, his simple answer is: rave ambient. the all i feel 1 million ep‘ is a record full of diversity. it reaches from emotional and dreamy, arp-based ambient tracks with rave and trance references, to broken beats, weird synth solos, up to a rough but melodious techno tune. finally the cherry on top of this special ep, is a remix by lobster theremin regular imre kiss. he delivered a dark and dubby version of the a2, that sounds like it was recorded underwater.

even with the first sounds, the organic structures can be heard - and felt. a crystalline crackling of the hi-hat very close to the ear, as if the black volcanic sand of lanzarote would trickling on the metal. the echo of the samples does not point to endless distances, rather, it swings up the cochlea and enters into a special world in which sound material develops a delicate self-life.

there is little information available about the band, but the “living funk” documentary changes all that. now the music does the talking here with the extremely rare, no-nonsense funk jazz instrumentals “let your mind take the place of your body” parts 1 & 2.

the fourth release on bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s bbbbbb records, comes hot on the heels of the first. two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer. bjarki returns as cucumb45 with the 5-track ep ‘something weirdcore’. on the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement – it defies them. the title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory – it’s a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre. this theme is explored throughout the ep by way of unnerving stripped back techno (akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (music for advertising). as cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.

exactly one year after the release of their second album m eanderlust, randweg r elease their first ep with remixes - by nick höppner, alex.do, luke abbott and in a left place. the double-a-sided anderlus t / requisetales ep appears on funken records to understand how this record is intended, take a closer look at the artwork: no matter how you turn it: a backside does not exist. on their upcoming anderlust / requisetales ep, randweg present rearrangements of tracks from their two former albums. the new versions clearly bear the signature of their producers, but the tracks also reflect the full range of the duo, which has found its very own sound with clarinet, bass and cajon. for the remixes of two tracks from the ir album m eanderlust, randweg attracted nick höppner and alex.do. you can hear the joy both producers had playing with the original material, which was the basis of their versio ns for the anderlust-side. while nick höppner transfers the calmly prancing wokules walzer into a subtle but euphoric house-track, alex.do slows down the tempo in his version of pool, and plunges down deep into a warm downbeat-bath. randweg ’s debut-album equisetales was released in 2013, and it would have been a pity if the two remixes from the early days of the duo remained unheard in their private archives. luke abbott surprises with an abstract-pl ayful version of the track ball a nd in a left place turns y ofa into an atmospheric club-track.
