this is a welcome return from sheffield-based producer grievous angel who has been known for his slew of edits and live remixes - whether it be grime, dancehall, house or uk funky. having done this for keysound label-mates dusk & blackdown as well as random re-works of productions from artists like wiley (check 2009s ice rick refix under the alias of bubblez), grievous angel has got an eye for recycling existing ideas but is no slouch when it comes to his original productions either.

techno and house build a strange symbiosis for darlyn vlys, without resulting in typical techhouse. when listening to the two tracks gus and heisenberg you just cant decide between groovy ass shaker and driving techno and you shouldnt! the often surprising development of the tracks combined with sophisticated transitions on the shaky but somehow secure foundation, make this special sound of the frenchman so interesting. the gus remix by affkt! comes as a crème double topping!

the ganas ep is dedicated to professor jaime escalante who passed away on march 30, 2010. the movie >stand and deliver< was based on his life. as a math teacher, he worked hard to inspire latino students in east l.a. to work hard at their math skills and at life with desire or in spanish ganas. when everyone else expected latinos not to do well at advanced math and calculus, he reminded students that the aztecs and mayans were masters of numbers. the tracks on the >ganas ep< are designed to inspire listeners to overcome expectations and remember that todays so-called minorities are the descendents of some of the worlds greatest civilizations.

the pioneer producer of all things electro swing and balkan beats delivers his new song schlawiener: (dunkelbunt) takes the mic himself, rapping about vienna the way he sees it and his life as a traveller & jetlag junkie. this limited edition release (only 300 copies!) comes in white vinyl and includes a bonus cd. schlawiener is a cheeky play on words in german, translating roughly as a smooth operator / dodger living in vienna. someone you almost automatically turn into when moving from a hanseatic city (hamburg in this case) to the foothills of the balkans (and stay there for more than a decade).

fully koded chicagoians traxx and beau wanzer team up for another mutant beat dance release. together they have produced arguably the best 80s chicago house record not made in the 80s. the mutants call it jakbeat, inspired by the early days of house music. tip!!! let me go is as intense and rhythmically inclined as they come. naughty woods sparse vocals cry desperation, almost nearing insanity, which makes up for a pressure cooker like warehouse anthem. rottonfunk is another intense work out which has a killer groove and makes us wander off to the promised land (wherever that is). its delightful to hear that chicago house music this good still gets made. surely when it was released way back when, it would fetch top dollars on the interweb. authentic stuff!

js is the half of the rks project and one of the minds behind earth mothern. for the fifth work of the label he produced a thick ep transfiguration of the dark side of the earth (mothern) which points out all his talent. the first track, when i met mary, heavily influenced by the early sound of berlin and detroit, is a dancefloorkiller. ocp rework the track with their bare gross minimalistic blueprint, mixing and recording on physical electronics as it is mandatory at the restoration headquarters. king korgs hypnotic synths and strong beats, pushing on melancholic pads. roll a groove for a savage ride… the last track, thinkin of you is a sweet late night house tune, evocating the skyline of chicago and detroit

ly sander & michael j. collins join forces to bring you raoul06 via raoul, a deep, soothing ep. no response is a laid back and haunting piece, featuring warm bass and soaring pads. percussion is kept simple here, with the focus on the bass groove and introspective wording. home listening and chill out sessions arent complete without this air-y number. to bring it up a bit, the >deep space orchestra remix< lays a beat and a groove under the track and takes us to galactic depths. a cool energy is spread throughout and saucy percussion takes the levels higher. this is a late night dance track that gives goose bumps. it will certainly help to reconnect senses in the early morning. >russian roulette< displays nice use of delay and relaxed percussion. this hasnt got the boom of techno, but it does have the space-y synths and ambience to bring you up to your feet. when everything is in place, it feels right an afterparty delight.

edits may be dead, but just when your elitist attitude comes to a head and you think you re on top of your game, there will always be someone deeper, faster and still motivated enough to rekindle your digging desires. where blackdisco volume 10 saw the return of lovefingers and nitedog, volume xi pushes forward into new territory (and with a new aesthetic) by welcoming a group of three deep diggers who shun musical trends and their inherent fakers. dea, albion & spacelex combine their vinyl-mining efforts to unearth some real diamonds from the rough. deas cut malaka is a floater with a funky sailboat vibe, while his complimentary cut taubat takes the tired jungle disco vibe to new level with its triumphant synth-led chorus, an absolute stunner that could be extended for 20 minutes. on the flip, albion spoons water over the coals, steaming up the joint with an uptempo percussion bomb as if santana had a disco secret, and spacelex rides us out with a sexy rock groove complete with mysterious male voiceover, almost as if someone lowered the volume to whisper in your ear.

transmissions from the cyber dance imprint have been sporadic since its inception in 2005, but when they arrive they are always something very special indeed. ostensibly one of italo discos great lost producers, we suspect that bandidos gang may well be a nom de plume for one of the labels many associates. whatever their provenance, the tracks certainly sound like vintage italo, with >marinche< leading with a pulsating bass arpeggio and synth horn melody worthy of moroder, whilst the flemming dalum & steen gjerulff remix adds layers of vocoder and a variety of cosmic accents to its sturdy frame. >last train to tucamari< meanwhile takes a more languid approach, pulling in an opposite direction to the speeding train samples, whilst flemming dalum & mike saltas remix adds some guitar licks, hazy synth atmospherics and even a flute solo which just adds to the classic italo feel.

along with massive attack and tricky, portishead was part of the bristol triumvirate that popularized triphop in the early nineties, especially in america. but what made them stand out was their added elements of cool jazz, acid house and soundtrack samples to their slow, elastic beats, creating an atmospheric and seductive sound that appealed to a broad audience. in 1998, when they realized that fans were swapping bootlegs of their live shows like crazy, portishead decided to capture a unique performance.
>roseland nyc< was a one night stand of sorts at the new york city roseland ballroom, where geoff barrow, adrian utley and beth gibbons were joined by the 35-piece new york philharmonic orchestra. these new arrangements gave a new sense of dramatic tension, and in the process they created one of the most breathtaking albums of the genre.

an electro hacktivist since the 90s, french techno pionneer, inventor of what became electro clash with miss kittin, true italo disco lover, legitimate son of dopplereffekt and kraftwerk and godfather of the new french sensation gesaffelstein with whom he runs the label zone. when michel amato (his real name) contacted us with a few tracks we felt so honored. he really got back to his roots here with deep italo and electro, warm analog synths against cold robotic drum machines, great melodies. it would have been a hit on the now defunct cbs radio.
