soul clap definitely knew what they were doing when they snapped up certifiable diva legend nona hendryx to sing on one of the cuts from their self-titled 2016 album. now ray mang has got his mitts on the parts to -shine (this is it)- and turned out three versions for his own mangled label - the classic combination of extended vocal, instrumental and radio edit versions. whichever cut suits you best, the vibe is the same, a bold and bright summer party track splashed with horns, keys and plenty more besides, although the smart money is on hendryx s legendary vocal, which soars as though no time has passed since her days working with material in 80s nyc.
the second single from the cultures of soul compilation, boogie breakdown: south african disco 1980 to 1984, benjamin ball’s -i just keep dancing- is a synth and drum machine-fueled track that also reveals ball as one of south africa’s earliest rappers. boston-bred djs, soul clap provide an excellent rework of the track adding some big room club flavor to the track for djs around the world. soul clap are the globe trotting dj duo of eli goldstein and charles levine who ve done everything from headlining clubs in ibiza to creating dj mix albums for fabric and dj kicks to making records with george dj/producer and co-founder of the running back label, gerd janson provides two funked up rerubs of the track, one with vocals and one without. licensed directly from the artist and housed in a custom disco sleeve these edits won t be available on the compilation.
for the 3rd edition of our new directions in funk 7- series on soul clap records we re keeping it close to home with special versions of two of the funkiest cuts off the recent soul clap and midnight magic albums. the latest in the double artist, double a side, split 7inch series follows up two funky slices of wax from funkadelic & soul clap / brian ellis ft. howard johnson on volume 1 and zopelar ft. serge erege / the nephrok all-stars on volume 2.
chances are if you have a body, a pair of ears and access to some kind of listening device, you’ve at least tapped a foot to ‘shine’ from soul clap and nona hendryx. pure authenticity and vocal integrity is provided in bucket loads by nona (ex-labelle member and purveyor of funk for more than 40 years), while the production maintains soul clap’s sublime freshness. increasing your marimba intake by 200% with two additional versions, hot toddy gives exotic plushness with a diversified rhythm section and melodic bottom lines that lightly entwine, shimmering in the light of nonas voice. scott grooves brings the funk, with an upfront bassline and extra jb-style horns on his horns dub, while the deepah dub takes a housier approach while still keeping the horn stabs. scott finishes off with an echopella of nonas vocals recorded from the international space station. this remix package is everything you would want, and then some.
fall of 2016 sees midnight magic ready to enchant us once more with the much-anticipated birth of their 2nd studio album, the wondrously eclectic free from your spell. going back to their roots in los angeles, morgan wiley, and tiffany roth, alongside the rest of the boogie nonet, have prepared a refined feast of genre-bending songs. the ever so diverse moods of free from your spell make it a seductive journey. with each song mixed seamlessly into the next, the record coalesces into one long disco odyssey, reminiscing giorgio moroder and donna summer s concept albums four seasons of love and a love trilogy. moods, genres, and styles intertwine like an aural kaleidoscope, the album electrifying with its striking harmony. whilst exuberantly borrowing from past decades, free from your spell more than holds its own as a self-assured, innovative body of work. midnight magics free from your spell is an offer one can t refuse. an attractive deal in the form of disco escapism, traveling through its various shades, emotions, and incarnations, a comprehensive revival of the genre for modern ears. it s studio 54, it s moroder, amanda lear, gino soccio, and grace jones. its a whole palette of 1980 s r n b and cosmic funk. despite all the music references of past eras free from your spell is very much a current album, a mature demonstration of genuine skills in songwriting, a multi-instrumental banquet of sounds, a coherent collection of ambitious dance tracks and a beautiful celebration of eclecticism. add to this some of tiffany roth s most memorable vocals to date and you arrive at one of the year s most exciting releases. there is a strong reason for both midnight and magic in the name of the band after all.
soul clap records new directions in funk is back with a double a-side 7” of that electronic funk to get you ridin. after selling out of 500 records of the first edition, round two is another 500 record limited run on purple vinyl.

12" Vinyl UK03.03.15
after unveiling their highly anticipated album 11 11 in july 2014, guy gerber & puff daddy s latest installment in their iconic collaborative project is a remix package of 11 11 track tourist trap . featuring four remixes which have been worked on since the tracks debut in 2011 - the package includes reworks from the likes of jamie jones, visionquest, soul clap, guy gerber & david k - and will be released via guy s explorative record label rumors. side a leads by unearthing jamie jones remarkable for ryan remix which enjoyed massive club rotations when it first appeared in 2011, and is followed by guy s very own collaboration with david k. the b side continues with a visionquest takeover - often played out by close affiliate seth troxler - whilst soul clap inject their signature funk sound to the record with an extended vocal cut that wraps up the package. with a host of exciting artist projects on the horizon, the tourist trap remixes feed into gerbers own, uniquely eclectic outlook and provides the perfect base to launch from in 2015
san francisco-based dj/producer nick monaco has long been part of the soul clap family, releasing his first 12- on the label back in 2012. mating call, a double 12- set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. it s typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. it s rooted in balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. it s hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good, certainly, it s one of soul clap s strongest releases of recent times.
finally the moment has arrived for us to release new original music on our own label! this monster release has a history that takes us back more than four years to a 48 hour studio session at our beloved marcy hotel in brooklyn, ny. the original collaborative effort came from a laundry list of familiar crew love players including soul clap s charlie and eli, wolf + lamb s gadi mizrahi, no regular play s greg paulus, the lovely deniz kurtel and even mr. fantastic himself, lee curtiss. after all was said and done the body and inspiration of the record was there but what was lacking was a strong vocal. enter robert owens, arguably one of the most prolific and sonically recognizable singers in house music period
cosmic disco ensemble midnight magic find their way on to the ever adaptive soul clap imprint for their next release. -viscous love- is a 5 track ep which see the magic ones explore the more spaced out corners of the disco universe. the ep starts with the funked out, slap-bass heavy, night flight before weaving its way to the more slo-mo pitched down viscous love and pick up , the later showcasing some synth work that parliment would be proud of. trouble t and electic shock finish the ep with aplomb, electric shock being one of the stand outs of the release with its driving italo-disco bass line.
occasionally jay haze will take some time away from his productions on contexterrior to release music with other labels like leftroom and desolate, or he ll provide a mix for fabric. here, in 2014, jay haze debuts on soul clap - and brings some friends with him. these friends are signor andreoni, an italian producer that s not released a solo record since 2010 (his last was with haze) and the unknown jordy lockruf. -take a dip- is a new-school cut of retrospective italo with those moaning synths perfect for a rimini dancefloor, while the two joints with lockruf provide one clunky, slide guitar twanging disco jam and a shuffling house cut that ever so lightly verges on electro swing - but not too much!
JACKATHON JAMS WITH KIM ANN FOXMAN (SOUL CLAP, CATZ N DOGZ RMXS)
12" Vinyl D01.07.14
new yorks kim ann foxman steps up for the next instalment of heidi presents jackathon jams with a helping hand from bostons favourite duo soul clap and polish heavyweights catz n dogz. the aside features the deep and hypnotic be mine followed by the equally intoxicating club jam let me be the one (new york club mix). on the bside soul clap deliver a spaced out remix of let me be the one while catz n dogz add a dose of acid to their rolling version of the track.
the story behind this record begins in 2004 on newbury street in boston massachusetts. juice belushi founding member paul foley is dressed head to toe in 80s regalia, including vest, fingerless leather gloves, fedora and chain connecting nose-ring to ear pierce. its like a scene out of michael jacksons bad, minus the dancing. at his feet is a boom box blasting freestyle and 80s electro-funk, hes handing out mix cds. needless to say we were intrigued!
block rocking, pop locking lonely c and baby prince are at it again with their latest fraiche ep on soul clap records. the troublemaking two-some take us back to 2011. it was a weekend in late august and new york city was practically under martial law. news tickers warned frightened citizens that a hurricane called irene would strike at any minute, flooding most of manhattan and williamsburg where the boys sat gleefully snacking and talking shit inside the world famous marcy hotel. with all airplanes grounded and the trains halted it became clear that lc & bp were going nowhere. it began to rain, the wind picked up and as the skies darkened, nyc declared a state of emergency.
bay area wonder kid nick monaco makes his shining debut on soul clap records with this very limited 7inch release. the a side butterfly is a slo-mo, 808 laden, melodic piece of postmodern psychedelic e-funk. on the flip side my babys back (cant wait) delivers a response to 80s icon cameos single life. an innocent yet poignant and hopeful breakup- to-makeup love song, its clear that monaco isnt too shy to reveal his romantic side.
