ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

neil landstrumm began producing in the early 90s after moving to edinburgh from inverness. initially producing within a variety of groups often with christian vogel, he began his solo production in 1993 influenced by the sheffield school of bleep as well as electro and miami bass. landstrumm s unique sound soon caught the ears of a wide variety of some of the worlds finest electronic labels and he went onto record for tresor and planet mu as well as his string of ep s and album for peacefrog. his playful sense of humor and penchant toward unpredictable song structures and bizarre sounds have continued to offer humour in a world often dominated by serious minimalism. threesome features landstrumm s three peacefrog ep s originally released between early 1995 and 1996. highlights include the minimalist chicago jack track takks, dancefloor destroyers such as swing / jerk and blam the target, along with the off kilter raw stomping funk of sniff and destroy. to this day landstrumm remains one of the true innovators in uk techno.

hekla’s music exists singularly. a one-off talent, emerging from no particular scene, ascribing to no particular rules.
as a creative tool, the theremin - bizarre, unique, and rarely heard - can be expressive, intuitive and highly adaptable. in hekla’s hands, her instrument covers an enormous range, from skittering birdsong of high frequency chirrups and chirps, to grinding, tectonic sub-bass. we are given the throbbing, apocalyptic dread of muddle and the baroque beauty of traditional icelandic hymn “heyr himna smi&#8706,,ur” in sequential tracks on the album’s a-side. appropriately, she also writes that the album title - Á - is similarly multifaceted in her native icelandic: “a river is an á and also it means ouch like when you hurt yourself, and also when you put something on top of something you put it á (on) something.”

discotheque fantastique is a musical collaboration that produces an eclectic spectrum of genres, somewhere between psychedelic rock, rare groove, funk and cosmic disco.

the first release is an ep with three driving tracks. the first track by discotheque fantastique -carnaval- has a percussive beat, hypnotic bassline, solid funk breaks with layers of tension. the second track by herr 2003 s -bourdonnement de l amour- is an amazing rework of a classic 70 s psychedelic rock tune with a groovy bass line, punchy female vocals and a shimmering arpeggiator synth. on the b side, club bizarre delivers an incredible extended version of a classic french cut from the 80 s.

the apparition of spanish female duo las grecas with their gipsy-rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos. morena y clara were one of them. launched by bizarre flamenco producer lauren postigo, they released a string of 45s and three lps (highly sought after now) for the discophon label. they mixed rumba, flamenco, psychedelic rock, funk and disco music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, moog, hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo. featuring their psychotronic hits like no llores mas, deje de quererte, buscando alegria and more.

heres an anthology dedicated to the 70s period of dolores vargas, known as the earthquake due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. in these songs, released 1970-1975, youll hear killer sound and production mixing funk, rock and pop with the powerful vocal style of the earthquake. including real gipsy-funk bombs like a la pelota anana hip or la hawaiana along with her bizarre cover version of chirpy chirpy cheep cheep and much more.

after releasing space control an intergalactic journey into synthesizers, back in 2012, the theremynt duo went on to release a successful, if steady, stream of eps, including robotique de l amou r and vampiros discos (a tribute to brazilian filmmaker ze do caixao). with remixes coming from the likes of david carretta, acid washed and club bizarre, these were playlisted by scene djs such as marvin & guy and ivan smagghe, amongst others. now yann and eva are striking back with their second lp, parallels. it s a record that sees them changing their colour palette and mood, but one that s still haunted by ghosts that lurk within their synthesizers and drum machines. the 10 tracks still exhibit peel s ever shifting vocal style and yann s sophisticated arrangements. but the second lp oscillates between ballad and dancefloor, landing between cosmic disco influences, krautrock and other progressive techno sounds. as a bonus, the album also features a cover of famous 80 s anthem self control. back in 1955 an unidentified flying object was spotted by a couple of farm workers nearby llangollen s castel dinas bran (crow castle). a young man named dewi llandlenip had taken some astonishing photographs of what appears to be a ufo hovering above the ancient medieval site. he was sure, this was the presence of the time travellers. crow castle has always had a mysterious presence, but this took them by surprise, a kind of close encouter type iii. shortly after this bizarre moment they were all left stunned and knocked to the ground, the object had gone without trace and their memory obscured into a so called abduction reset.

my third week in amsterdam i found my way to a small speakeasy tucked away amongst a labyrinth of cobbled alleyways. a doorman waved me inside, a knowing smile twisted around the half-smoked blunt hanging from his lips. i made my way down crooked, narrow stairs into a dimly lit room full of patrons nodding in the haze, feet tapping in time as they smiled and sipped at green-tinged cocktails. the soft sound of glasses clinking amongst murmured conversation served to accentuate the flaw in the scene before me, there was no music. realising i d paused in the entrance long enough to draw a few amused looks from the tables nearest me, i regained my composure and headed towards the bar, pondering the mystery before me. i reached the counter as the barman was mixing a cocktail and waited, but before i could order the man turned and placed a glass in front of me, the same half smile on his lips the doorman had shown me as he nodded at a specials board listing a pistachio sour. it sounded good so i took it to an empty seat and returned to my examination of the bizarre room. as i sat down a grinning girl next to me offered a toke on her joint, and as the no indoor-smoking law was clearly being ignored here i gratefully took a careless draw. as my coughing subsided i took a deep gulp of my drink, and suddenly music flooded my ears. my jaw dropped as i raised my head to see a guy on stage mesmerising the crowd with chill beats, house music permeating the formerly silent bar. the girl with the joint smiled at my amazement. his name s sune she told me, welcome to 8 till late.
