the intro of abcess sounds like you have just entered the realm of the wicked, where the listener gets confronted with a serious amount of evil soundscapes and an intense drop. here it is all about the massive drumwork in combination with the impressive percussion involved, creating a serious rhythm together. the low-end is heavy, containing nice variations in depth and patterning. morphing aggressive growls take over the mix along with some repetitive stabs to create a great amount of heat. widowmakers timing is perfect, implementing necessary breaks to add an extra punch to certain parts of the track. just amazing to hear how this track develops into a technical roller with such power – excellent track.

knox is the band brainchild of brother-sister duo nic and eliza coolidge. hailing from boston and new york, the siblings released their second ep, here, on december 3rd, and it is a big step forward for the band. formed less than two years ago, in march 2011, knox finds themselves working with the likes of john tejada and kuxxan suum on this release, and the outcome is stunning. here is five-song set full of ice and echoes. it runs as close to the third rail of impersonation, but flies away so quickly that knox sounds contextual and perfectly fresh. the influences from james blake is clear: the swooping, bomber bass and half-timey compressed dub beats, here could also easily be an inventive b-side to the latest how to dress well album. but, with the limited scale, interspersed remixes and foundling status in the scene, i would say it is likely a more impressive feat. the ep as a whole is desolate. expansive spaces filled with cold little beats and vocal washes, exploring in the course of five songs an icescape aesthetic with a sense of place usually reserved for full-length albums. the remixes blend so seamlessly that i didnt even realize they were during my first, casual listen.

taiki and nulight or to their friends rowan harrington and erka chinbayer have both been djing/producing for many years both in very different circles. taikis career started back in 2008 under his old alias name site 1 who was a house/electro producer. they joined forces and started working together in 2011 which now seems like a lifetime ago considering on what they have achieved in such a short time. when they first started out working together they were making a lot of dubstep, house and electro influenced bass music as we call it now. being heavily into garage, house and electronic dance music there sound heavily progressed across the spectrum of dance music. taiki and nulight released their first ep in february 2012 on subway recordings which gained a lot of support from the likes of mistajam, crookers, herve zinc, redlight, foamo, roska, benga, skream, adam f, hatcha, n type and more. gaining them a lot of frequent airtime on bbc radio 1, 1xtra, kiss 100 and rinse fm. now nearly a year and a half since they have joined forces, they have received massive support from some of the most respected djs out there not to mention air time nearly every week on radio 1 and kiss 100. with their next release on the horizon and due to drop december time 2012 on bengas very well respected label benga beats there is so much more that you will see from these boys and so much new material to hear.

having teamed up with keith flint of prodigy fame on the hardhitting >war< earlier this year, dub police boss caspa is making a return to the label for his new single >on it< featuring atlanta based hip hop collective mighty high coup. never content to rest on his creative laurels, the track marks another evolution in the underground figureheads sound as he continues to push the envelope. fusing the uk sound with which he has become synonymous and a healthy dose of hip hop swagger that he has absorbed during his time spent across the atlantic, >on it< packs some serious heat. dp076 (the on it remix vinyl) is an impressive and eclectic package, with standout contributions coming from all areas of bass music. we get reworkings from the legendary tc, digital soundboy star dismantle and dub police newcomer dirty dog.

spongemagnets debut ep raises a few questions. to begin with, its title: is it a commendable recommendation to let your inner gimp come out of the closet? or is it the expression of a more judaeo-christian approach to the matter: hate the gimping, but love the gimp? the titles of the tracks are also subject to debate.
