it sounded all right through two walls, so what s the problem? the final words of two walls, the fast and very catchy leading track of dj marcelle s new record, sum up an aesthetic almost lost in today s musical climate, where often a pleasing attitude and overproduced music sadly rule, even in so-called alternative circles. the quote comes from the late mark e. smith (1957 - 2018), legendary frontman of the fall, and is taken from some of the conversations marcelle had with smith over the years. smith is referring to a recording process but for marcelle his words stand for something bigger.

in this oversharing era, uncommon is for an artist to choose to remain in total anonymity. even for the easytiiger teamwork, the real persona behind the model nice act is still a complete mistery – actually not a problem when the sound speaks for itself. the debut ep -nice to meet you- arrives with four raw dance burner gems, including a futuristic arp killer remix from the lemon-fanta guy, pépe, for the song -cravo amargo-. besides the rough-shaped aspect of the sound, this ep reveals a very sharp and sophisticated production, with complex element layer works that could perfectly fit as the soundtrack for a blade runner microcosm built inside of a night club. -nice to meet you- invites you to this journey through a particular soothing world, surrounded by a complex & confessional mood without saying... well, a single word.

for her third outing on the german label jahmoni, marcelle is as inventive and unpredictable as ever. the four tracks on the wittily titled psalm tree ep go from wild techno to abstract dub, and all bear that undefinable marcelle touch of freedom and imagination, which sets the dj/producer so apart from almost all of her younger peers. the ever-travelling dutch lady, who was one of the highlights of this year s nyege nyege music festival in uganda, toys with musical styles and expectations, both live and in the studio she has always deejayed more or less like a musician. this was amongst others recognised by faust founder member hans-joachim irmler, who between 2008 and 2014 released 4 marcelle albums on his klangbad label.

there are not many conventional rules in the world of dutch dj/producer dj marcelle/another nice mess, or they have to be her own, but which she is more than happy to break at any time she fancies. for the past 15 years she has been travelling around europe and beyond, playing her brave three turntable sets in front of often both stunned, surprised and euphoric audiences. she is an original, skilled mixer, with a very distinctive style of her own, avoiding most dj-cliches and stale rules.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. italian duos nice7 & dirty channels join forces for the first time to deliver the acid induced feelings ep on crosstown rebels. the release features two exceptional originals with torontos nathan barato bringing his signature heavy sounds into play for the remix. nicola daniele and cesare marocco aka nice7 are amongst the latest italian stars to emerge in dance music. since 2005, the year in which the two of them paired up, they have released on labels like noir music, get physical, remote area, suara, defected and gruuv. dirty channels are simone & leme, who started working together in 2008 after long single dj careers. releases soon followed for big labels such as josh wink s ovum, hot creations sub-label hot waves and culprit la as well as licenses on several defected compilations. nathan barato worked his way onto the world stage with releases on the likes of cajual, saved and hot creations. 2016 also saw him as resident for jamie jones paradise at dc10 in ibiza. here he delivers a punchy remix to dominate the dancefloor, centered around a hefty bassline, tight drum patterns and slick vocal cuts.

dj support from rich medina, kev beadle, dj cash money, eavesdrop radio and kcrw. fatnice is multi talented to say the least. the avant garde mc, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. a prolific house head, fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of melle melle rhyming the message in 1982. an avid writer of poetry fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.

the latest emotional response release provides something very special indeed, in the form of a new track from under the radar psychedelic rock musician nick nicely. nicely has been making music from the 70s onwards, but his music has recently undergone something of a critical reappraisal, with the likes of robert wyatt and robyn hitchcock supposedly inspired by his work, wrottersley road provides the ideal entry into his music, a masterful piece of shoegaze pop filled with fuzzed out guitars and eastern psychedelic tones. remixes are provided by invisible hands, who provide a minimal 80s inspired electro-pop version, which comes saturated in radiophonic textures, and the oscillation, who take the track into even more abstract ambient territory than the original, deep into a place where time seems to stand still entirely, drawing its rich textures out into infinity.

back to the 90s and back on noir. nice7 from italy (gruuv, great stuff, sk supreme, bla bla) are defending their position as top notch classical. four great tracks with pianos and good mood.
