born in sao paulo to a deeply religious family, laercio has been around music all his life - amidst the challenges of daily life, his adventist parents would whip out all sorts of instruments whenever the situation would allow it, introducing a young and curious mind to a wide range of musical expressions. it should come as no surprise, then, that our hero quickly felt at home with notes and bars, choosing the flute as his first weapon of choice which he eagerly studied from the age of seven. even later non-musical career choices always reflected an infatuation with the world of sounds, like his stint as a capoeira teacher, combining martial arts, acrobatics and dance. with such a multi-faceted background in music, the inevitable tinkering with synthesizers and other means of electronic sound generation was rather a question of time than one of ambition, and sure enough we find laercio roaming the parties of the mid-noughties, absorbing the unique melange of styles and scales that inform club culture to this day. in stark contrast to most other rave inductees at the time, however, he never wanted to become a dj: his area of expertise is the performance, not the collecting and curating of other people s releases, and it shows in the unusual fact that laercio has held club residencies as a live electronic musician in venues like sao paulo s the edge without ever so much as touching a record. in these release l_cio has worked with d.o.c. mastermind gui boratto. and the result is music for the dancefloor.

block rocking, pop locking lonely c and baby prince are at it again with their latest fraiche ep on soul clap records. the troublemaking two-some take us back to 2011. it was a weekend in late august and new york city was practically under martial law. news tickers warned frightened citizens that a hurricane called irene would strike at any minute, flooding most of manhattan and williamsburg where the boys sat gleefully snacking and talking shit inside the world famous marcy hotel. with all airplanes grounded and the trains halted it became clear that lc & bp were going nowhere. it began to rain, the wind picked up and as the skies darkened, nyc declared a state of emergency.

12 inch vinyl only. the first entry into the templar sound white label series comes via sydney savant dro carey. careys n.r. beat is the centrepiece of this vinyl-only release. the track is a menacing hybrid of rapid-fire martial 808s and uncompromising sub-low bass, indebted in equal parts to black ops and mobb deep.grime don j-sweet forges his own uncompromising version turning the instrumental into a brutal piece of 8-bar weaponry guaranteed to cause damage in the rave. the a-side of the record is reserved for a vocal of the n.r. beat by south londons merky ace with the mc riding the track with ease, his vicious flow effectively kept in check by carey’s brooding instrumental.

morgan zarates second release for hyperdub is a bold and unexpected move for him. he has been known in the past as the producer for leftfield soul group spacek and also currently as one half of the shining, signed to xl records, but with >broken heart collector< he has made some highly contagious dubstep pop, featuring rising singer / songwriter / producer stevie neale on vocals. stevie warns of a guy who is the titular >broken heart collector<. her rnb vocals contrast with a fierce storm of drums and vertiginous synths that attack like waves against rocks. it is a brilliant pop song, with a chorus earworm you might find hard to resist. there is also an instrumental included as well. the third track is >crey bey<, an energetic, grimy 8 bar instrumental. it shifts between dive-bombing synths and a spooked, nervous melody over a rich organ track, with martial kicks and snares guaranteed to get you bouncing.

ig cultures holy rollers label comes correct with two fiery, teched-out funky bombs from major notes. the >o beasity ep< is his debut on holy roller and one of the freshest funky 12 inches we have heard in 2012 - not watered down or some tepid attempt at house proper. >rokit< works out some killer tribalist polyrhythms and batty-squeezing bass pressure laced with shades-on synth beams on the a-side, up there with the likes of funkystepz or ill blu, while >o beasity< gets overlarge on the flip, wrangling martial snares, tribal calls and hard-bodied bass with the ruffest intent.

dj diamond is 24 year old karlis griffin from the west side of chicago. he has been producing music since the age of 13 and djing since 20, heading the -flight muzik- clique of footwork producers. you might recall his two tracks from our -bangs & works vol.1- footwork compilation of last year. in addition hes also released several mix cds in chicago, but this, his first international album showcases his unique style of footwork music. dj diamond is a unique producer with his own distinct style and an unusual ear for unexpected sonic and rhythmic combinations within the footwork template. often he thoroughly edits samples into tiny trance-inducing, techno-like stabs. combining this with a penchant for neon synths and loose, broken drums (that are often more effect-laden and freeform than those of of his peers) and you have a sound which has an intriguing, deeper, dreamlike feel. the breadth and quality of his production is clear when you listen to this album. take opener -rep yo clique-s woozy drawling synths and tribal tom patterns next to -speakerz n tonguez- with it-s snapping snares, minimal, repetitive voice samples and martial, detailed drum work. then a track like -torture rack- which is like grime in outer space: a minimal bassline and some samples from a computer game, while a bass kick stumbles at half time, swarms of percussive detail giving it drama. its a brilliant exercise in wonky tension. the extraordinary -decoded- comes across like a kind of amalgam of trance and prog rock bombast at 160bpm while -wreckageÕs- high pitch saw noise is like a strange metallic bird-call, over light cymbals, gabba-like kicks and metallic claps. -digimons- harmonic microedits could even be an snd track transported to chicago. finally the albums closer -i choose you- rolls out over a heavily edited and processed soul sample, its drums rolling off at odd angles to almost seasick effect.
