simbad teams up with south african vocalist brian temba, whose previous release together come join in dropped on hi:rise back in 2011. in it’s original form take my hand is a sublime, forward-looking deep and soulful house track based around a filtering symphonic string loop, low-slung groove and heart-felt vocal. simbad has created a very london-centric vibe but with a french touch and detroit sensibilities, drawing from house heroes such as parrish and bradock, joining the dots and creating a fresh masterpiece in the process. next up we have jimpster on the remix, picking up the bpm’s slightly and loading up on his trademark deep stabs, sub-bass and spacious fx adding just enough dance-floor bump whilst leaving the vocal placed firmly at the core. on the flip side we have two smbd zulu edits which replace the more spartan groove of the original with some driving afro percussion. the first version keeps the vocal intact, the second version goes balls deep into dub territory, closing out this amazing release with an instrumental pushing the strings and hypnotic groove front and centre

young adults return to the fold with another gem from the polish underground. having bubbled up in the polo house scene for the last couple years, 2017 finds richu m stepping into the forefront for his debut outing donor goes to hawaii . rhythm-centric, but varied in approach, the 6-tracker traverses swirling techno, heady thumpers, muddy beatscapes and throwback boom bap. simultaneously airy and off-kilter, the release shows a breadth of approach that is not easily pigeonholed, but feels vaguely familiar. opener round soundtracks a laser tag pursuit scene with swayed synths, chattering percussion, and pitch-shift vocal echoes. the title track donor goes to hawaii takes a dilla bounce kit to the beach and gets the vibraphone and organ all sandy. jazzy piano loops and squelchy synths stack wobbly layers high like jenga blocks on aquarian mummies . pistaccio gets subterranean with infectious skittered patterning and a proper bump to boot. picking up the pace, melting dolphins is a funky floor filler. finale landskates blisses out with floating pads and a meditative drumroll.

kampana s debut release was a global hit across the house, disco and tropical scene, with support from heavyweights such as francois k, soul clap and gilles peterson. the label is back just in time for summer with three more doses of peak time fire from aroop roy, who has gained a fine reputation for the quality and widespread appeal of his releases. you say is a funk-fuelled number with gritty retro vocals and guitar, driven by a warm disco groove and 80s arp-synth. the feel-good vibes gradually build into an anthemic floor-filling climax. taj mahal reworks a brazilian classic into a full on house workout, reminiscent of roys popular series on gamm. mapora is an original number that will blend well into both deep house and afro-centric sets. the track builds nicely with filtered samples and syncopated vocals, coming in with an infectious highlife guitar line and late night synth stabs, to get mind and body moving.

one of the current techno scene’s ‘hidden treasures’, bristol based a sagittariun has discretely released a wide breadth of music over the last five years for labels like secretsundaze, hypercolour and his own elastic dreams label. two highly acclaimed albums in “dream ritual” and “elasticity” as well as fifteen eps have appealed to those who like their techno without frontiers, taking in blistering 140bpm techno, breakbeat idm and ambient dub with ease. his second release for hypercolour displays signs of crossover appeal at long last… lead track “vanishing point” has already been receiving early plays from the likes of laurent garnier (dropping it in his recent timewarp germany set), spencer parker and len faki. big pumping beats and spiralling fx fall aside to a lone breakbeat that ushers in one pretty special breakdown section. the childlike keys and fathoms deep synth stabs (straight out of the john carpenter school of fathoms deep synth stabs) have already drawn comparisons to the retro 80s vibes to be heard on the american sci-fi horror series stranger things. it’s a breakdown that takes the listener to an uncharted dimension, bookended by slammin’ beats that acts as a perfect mood changer in any set. watch this one soar! “the pathway” keeps things on an all together straighter tip, an incessant tribal loop weaves and filters around a thunderous kick and shuffling hats, ebbing and flowing all the way in what might be a sagittariun’s most club-centric and stripped back production yet. matrixxman (dekmantel/spectral sound) is on hold to deliver a superb remix, pushing the original down a long dark tunnel for a growling and reverberating techno overhaul

unknown archetype aka roxy tripp & oliver kucera debut their visceral experimental techno for r&s on this four track ep.
unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track ‘voyeurism’ kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘the serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s’s storied catalogue.

next stop in our journey on transparent is asc, is quite impossible to describe his immense skills, to really know more you have to search for it. after 16 years of music this artist comes to our label to guide us on another level of sonic spectrum. “internal software” is one of the most charming sound design on a 4/4 scale we have ever experienced ever on the label. take your time and immerse yourself into his world. all on transparent green 12”.

landing straight after 415-pr10, public releases first in a loose series of san francisco-centric compilations, this three-track 12inch is a further exploration of the bay areas sounds and aesthetics, though here its explored via remixes produced by friends from abroad. the a-side is a complete overhaul, reimagining, and extension of anonstops seaside by thee loving hand, tim goldsworthys solo moniker of choice these days. the ex-dfa records co-founder and former member of unkle took the tunes balearic foundation and used it as a bed for what one might mistake as a lost arthur russell cut from the world of echo era. joel wells lent his airy, light, sweet vocals to the track, while darren morris added synth work to bolster tim’s usual production genius. it’s carefree and emotive, the aural equivalent of a big, toothy smile. the flip features a mix thats a whole helluva lot more intense and uptempo, though no less positive than its original. chidas remix of domination is squarer and housier than beziers piece, which was glitzy classic disco dunked in italo, but enough of it remains to be unmistakably a spinoff. fiery and propulsive in the way a gulfstream jet is, its a ball of thunder that will electrify any set, any dance floor.

meda fury welcome back oakland resident damon bell for another accomplished ep of rugged cosmic grooves and tribal pressure. bell is riding a rich wave of form with a killer recent release on don’t be afraid, and even more fire on the burek label, not forgetting his impressive debut last year on his regular home, the mighty deepblak - he’s a proven master at fusing afro-centric rhythms, rich keys and off-kilter pads into an urgent and contemporary form of house music that deftly eschews cliche. ‘akebu-lan’ commences the ritual with a gospel vocal loop over pumping 808 kicks and tranced out swollen pads, giving way to ecstatic fender rhodes chords and climatic piano, reminiscent of robert hood - is this bell s fastest bpm track yet? loose/live jazz keys riff throughout ‘ether’ creating a warm rich miasma of sound against the distressed percussive gyrations and sinister drones. hypnotic synth riffs tumble over the powerful drum-track in ‘altered visions’ creating a deliciously hypnotic chug. drawing the ep to a close, deepblak and pan cohort african sciences joins bell for the sizzling ‘kinetic energy’, a sleazy, skronking cut of slurred moog bass and atonally pitched toms wrestling with thumping kicks and whispered vox pummel the listener

dyad carry the flame for the dancefloor-centric sound of warehouses and big rooms worldwide. in their first outing for dba they offer two options for the discerning techno selector, one uplifting and rip-roaring, the other dark and brooding. dyad is a collaborative music project and label by ben gibson and fundamental interaction, launched in 2014. their first trilogy of eps showcased a muscular and melodic sound, with tracks like from another place, enclosed and zou receiving strong support from a host of highly regarded djs.

mculo s latest asks you to do a double take. in the second release for his homegrown roots by the oder imprint, i caught a glance, a first listen to the ep s a-side introduces a dancefloor-centric house number punctuated by the loop of a somehow ceremonious melodic riff. listen again and it lures you in with hypnotic atmospheres and valleys of endless synth. the b-side gets deeper still, wasting no time in putting forth stronger basslines and traces of growling lows. a second listen offers a more pastoral diffusion as you pick up on the soft drums and pads, classic groove, and a climate that comes full circle, recalling the a-side s easy ambiance

the berlin-based producer is kicking off his label with a four-track single. while he is perhaps not as name-checked as some of the hardware hawking house heads of modern times, arttu snellman has been working hard at gritty box jams for a good few years now. he first appeared under his arttu guise in 2011 with the nuclear funk and fear diluted singles on royal oak and philpot respectively, and then proceeded to wheel out tunes for 4 lux and chiwax over the ensuing years. prior to the tough-edged pump of his current ventures, you could find snellman indulging in a more laptop-centric kind of practice under the name lump. this more minimalistic, glitchy house fodder could be found on labels such as karloff, morris/audio and süd electronic amongst many others. back in the here and now though, arttu was last spotted on clone jack for daze earlier this year with the rave dogz 12”, and next up he’s taking matters into his own hands. existing fans of arttu will be more than pleased with the heavyweight, crunchy tackle that inhabits cyblo01. this is dynamic business with same heft found on previous releases from snellman, mixed in with the cheeky flair that has always marked his productions out in a crowded marketplace.
