miles whittaker and sean canty are back as demdike stare with a new album for modern love.

hmot aka stas sharifullin is siberian-born, moscow-based musician, curator, educator and multi-disciplinary artist from siberia. using modular synthesizer, field recordings and visual programming languages, hmot collects sounds and organizes them into structures, pushing traditional electronic music genres beyond their comfort zones. “permanent imbalance” is his ep debut on the berlin imprint oqko following a single contribution to the label’s “form_1” compilation. structurally, “permanent imbalance” is disorderly and elusive, it’s a techno record which has undergone a gregor samsaesque metamorphosis. embedded with dizzying polyrhythmics, the discontinuity at the heart of the record might also be its central directive – interrupting the ecstatic clubbing experience in favor of a contradictory reality which is impossible to describe with regular rhythms. boldly submitted to the niche of dance music deviations, “permanent imbalance” also reveals techniques directly derived from early institutional electronics and musique concrete. but where others would pile on the layers, sharifullin keeps it trim. these are just some finishing touches enhancing his rickety and multifaceted soundscapes. subject to constant deviations of its own temporality, this music proves to mirror the crisis in which modernity resides – a state of life out of balance which now appears to be permanent as never before.

a great compilation can open the gate to another world. who knew that some of the most exciting afro-funk records of all time were actually made in the small west african country of benin? once analog africa released the first african scream contest in 2008, the proof was there for all to hear, gut-busting yelps, lethally welldrilled horn sections and irresistibly insistent rhythms added up to a record that took you into its own space with the same electrifying sureness as any favourite blues or soul or funk or punk sampler you might care to mention.
ten years on, intrepid crate-digger samy ben redjeb unveils a new treasuretrove of vodoun-inspired afrobeat heavy funk crossover greatness. right from the laceratingly raw guitar fanfare which kicks off les sympathics’ pile-driving opener, it’s clear that african scream contest ii is going to be every bit as joyous a voyage of discovery as its predecessor. and just as you’re trying to get off the canvas after this one-punch knock out, an irresistible afro-ska romp with a more than subliminal echo of the batman theme puts you right back there. ignace de souza and the melody aces’ “asaw fofor- would’ve been a killer instrumental but once you’ve factored in the improbably-rich-to-the-point-of-being-nat-king-cole-influenced lead vocal, it’s a total revelation.

what if music had no beginning, no end? can music exist for itself or of itself, without structure constraining it, defining it? can music be non-linear, non-narrative, simply experiential, existential? the second full-length album on mysteries of the deep, musica enterrada from portland’s william selman, neither answers these questions nor supposes them. but in listening, one can’t help but wonder: what if i disappeared into this record forever? in another time and place, william selman was known as warmdesk, an alias through which he issued a series of sharply precise minimal techno records. in recent past, selman shifted gears, shedding the dynamics of tension and release that characterized his previous alias output. under his own name, selman began releasing process-oriented, freeform experimental music on cassette-focused outlets like digitalis and hausu mountain. now comes musica enterrada, a diaphanous, weightless musical vision not unlike the theoretical square root of grm and popol vuhs early electronic forays. split into six tracks across two sides of vinyl, musica enterrada bubbles, churns, drifts, and dozes. dulcet tones pile up gently like waves on shore. patterns repeat and reconfigure, as if heard from different angles. rhythms appear, shift the frame, then disappear, into the ether whence they came. play musica enterrada on repeat. and if you disappear into it, fret not you have drifted into solace.

for the first time iron curtis enters the ring over the full ep length for uncanny valley. there hasn t been much of a discussion whether or not this is something for uncanny valley when iron curtis approached the four label heads with this new pile of dance floor material. these tunes are too good. iron curtis must have been particularly inspired by the muse while producing these four outstanding house tracks. you ll feel a comprehensive knowledge about dance music s history when listening. no doubt, the franconian who is now based in berlin has spent a good time of analysing house music s techniques. -sweet romancer- is the best example for his studio eloquence. modulated synths, a classic bass line and a whole batch of drum ideas are combined into a wonderful track. the interplay between subtlety and vitality characterizes -nixdorf danse-. plus, you won t forget those strings. on -triroom- he proves that he has a knack for melodies as well. finally, -take me home- should provide a lot of emotional moments on the dance floor with its dramatic piano and crescendo-like synth line.

attempt to find a convenient musical pigeon-hole for zapatilla and you ll find him slipping from your grasp and zig-zagging in unexpected yet compelling directions. his transcendent debut ep comprises two ambitious, shapeshifting tracks. initially, opener crumbling down suggests a dance-floor focused blueprint, before its arrangement of percussion and classical instruments come into focus around the 3 minute mark, the result is a steadfastly organic and emotional opus. its sister track thumb piano is a more abstract affair, with its eclectic instrumentation anchored to a palette of synths and electronica. via his world travels and collaborations with numerous artists, zapatilla has accrued a wealth of experience, influences and a stock pile of varied and unusual instruments. it s a varied cv and includes his role as bass player in the acclaimed owiny sigoma band and, along with tom skinner, composing the score for swedish film the real estate a nominee for best film at this year s berlin film festival. this hybrid of influences has resulted in a spine-tingling alchemy that on paper shouldn t work. but zapatilla s natural instinct for melody, innovative arrangements and musical ability, make this one of the most musically adept and intriguing artists set to emerge this year.

moc’s alek s returns to the mothership with his third full ep, dropping just in time for the label’s third birthday. kicking off the release in style, „consciousness outline“ lays down the groundwork for a solid slice of punchy techno. featuring a minimal array of elements, which aptly intertwine instead of seeing new layers pile up, it’s a gradual build up of a powerful groove. hypercolour & soma records alum roberto clementi takes on remix duties, revamping „consciousness outline“ into a cavernous techno affair. switching the main focus on the percussive leads proves a good venture, as it results into a piece with major dance appeal. „penny drop“ dives in with a spacious loop, which keeps centre stage throughout the entire construction. overall, it’s an airy track, with ample pads and a loose yet gripping melody. „neverending“ rounds off the pack in an atmospherical, upbeat fashion. ascending synth pads make for an uplifting ambiance, all set on a backbone of electrifying percussion.

indianapolis band led by organist bobby watley (ex-lonnie smith group) and driven by his funky jack mcduff-influenced playing. discovered in march 1971, funk inc had sent bob porter a demo tape which languished in a pile of other until the producer finally got around to working his way through the whole batch. the band s tape grabbed him as soon as he heard the first notes and the rest, as they say, is history. a quintet, funk inc s constituent members were leader bobby watley on organ, eugene barr on tenor saxophone, steve weakley on guitar, jimmy munford on drums and cecil hunt on congas. watley, the leader, worked originally as a drummer, with both winston walls and lonnie smith. he switched to organ in 1969 and was heavily influenced by jack mcduff. barr played his first professional gig with little milton and then went on to lead his own band prior to joining funk inc. munford worked with artists of the calibre of etta james, jerry butler and james brown. hunt had been with the coasters as well as playing with local california bands. weakley was one of the (then) new breed of guitarists whose debt owed as much to jimi hendrix as kenny burrell.

lucky number seven for good company records is the o.g.ep, roza terenzi s cheekily-titled debut. three tracks of doof-approved club gear from the perth-born melbourne resident, plus a bonus sunday-morning-coming-up megamix from vancouver s jayda g. with a sound like windham hill gone hardcore, this record promises fans from black rock to berlin. after the driving, new age electro of opener the right zone, terenzi declares yeh yeh yeh with a bush-bashing jeep of a bassline, blasting roxanne shante as the posse pile out of the whip & into the function. later, higher place sparks the chalice for a pre-dawn dip into the spirit realm. sometime after that, designated driver (and freakout cult-leader) jayda g takes the wheel, pulling into the church car park with her deep in your soul remix, a piano house kick-on of all three roza terenzi originals. feels good, right?

... one day he found a great, reddish slab of stone on the side of the road. it shone. could he transfer the very same color onto himself? he searched and found a rough surface which he used to scrub the stone hunk until there was a pile of crimson powder. mixing it with water, he coloured his body with the shinning red. standing there painted, he began to sing. as he sang, the stone slab on which he stood opened and swallowed him up. even today, on passing this stone, they say one can still hear the song of the enchanted. from below the surface of amsterdam s underground, depth over distance will release its first ep of spaced out grooves conjured by eversines. four jams covering the spectrum of deep electronic music ranging from slow building anthems (pyramids) and acid fuelled dubs (transition portal and vultures) to the celestial closing pads of the other side signifying the first stop on this journey.

following on from 2016’s excellent “birsk” single on futureboogie, philipp lauer returns to the label with a new three track single. the “las brisas” ep kick starts with the mechanical funk of “pile”, acidic notes drip over heavy ebm drums whilst a hovering ‘resse’ style bassline dominates, the influence of early house and industrial dance are ever present here on this belter of a track from the tuff city kids and talamanca system player.
more acid pressure can be found on “clipper”, a blazing and dynamic slice of anthemic balearic dance. searing pads and lustrous melodies pour over the robust drum machine workout, that’ll have dancers reaching for the skies! real stirring stuff from lauer, which continues with closing track “tyco”. ricocheting stabs and cowbell hits bounce off a sturdy kick drum as the track flourishes with more on-point melodies and a snaking bass. dripping with emotive refrains, lauer brings his very best to the table here, and rounds off an ep that’s most definitely all killer and no filler!

house for her is a label founding its birth in the need that she s gone had to express his feelings in his mixes and productions. the time came to him, 1 year ago to give the floor to other people, to let everyone build pieces of music around their lived experience. in this release, the four artists came to cover in mist the wax in a cascade of tablecloths sometimes soft and other times more aggressive, to develop a ep rich in questioning, ranging from dance pieces to other more ambient things, linking them together to tell a story. raär and mp-57, as usual, darkened in the pile, revealing brutal tracks but nevertheless completely full of feelings. devant, with a more colorful touch, has come to appease the ep of a piece of a house deep and sexy, endowed with an atmosphere reminding us much nostalgia. and finally entrave, in a final piece, quietly envelops us to finish to walk in this ep, as in a novel, a kind of sombre happy-end.

we are officially under exclusive rights reissuing a very special privetly pressed 45, -silver satin- by axis. originally released back in 1984, axis was a short-lived band formed in california by guitar player/vocalist byron bordeaux. back in 80s, record was never officially distributed, with only a couple of hundred 45s made, and sold exclusively at their shows. byron recorded a good deal of demo tracks, which for the next 30 years would go unreleased, all stuck on a pile of 8-track and cassette tapes. you can find one of these tracks on the flipside of this 7- - -runaway love- was completely recorded and performed by byron circa 1986. following the band s dissolution, byron continued performing, eventually ending up playing alongside the likes of bobby womack, buddy miles and the gap band. fast forward three decades later, -silver satin- is a sought after record on the collectors market that when found, goes for triple figures on ebay, discogs and the like. heavy support from jeremy underground as played live at dimensions 2016.

unknown archetype aka roxy tripp & oliver kucera debut their visceral experimental techno for r&s on this four track ep.
unknown archetype is a collaborative project between roxy tripp, a british conceptual artist & music producer, and oliver kucera a czech born producer & live performer, residing in the netherlands. with an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as unknown archetype in 2015. the tripp ep is an abrasive, visceral ep of electronic body music underpinned by themes of jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. the industrial tech funk of lead track ‘voyeurism’ kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘the serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals. effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the tripp ep is a fitting and welcome addition to r&s’s storied catalogue.

following his debut solo release altar ego ep on la mission in early 2016, j choirboy returns with more bombastic breakbeats and raucous rave chords for your earholes. another sharp shot of nostalgia to the heart to have you waking up spluttering in the glory days of 92. simpler times when the internet was still in black-and-white and you and seven of your mates would pile into gazs vauxhall corsa and drive to a field somewhere off the m25 for a propa wicked rave which you found out about from a party hotline on a crumpled flyer with some tenuous reference to science in the title.

creepin in plays with the gray areas that exist between genres, contrasting with the clarity of the digital synths and over saturated analog drums. next up ineffekt is acid electro cut with thrashing percussion held together with 808 drums. red alert is the only track with a vocal. classic roland drums, deep sub and hardware synths mixed with the hypnotic vocal overlays make this one for the freaks. sky pager is slow cooked mid 90 s jacking business, the kind i m known for. 808 trash pile is an acid hammer of a cut with the drum and synth doing a maniacal game of call and response.

the house crime label debuts with this pearl of an ep by the new and exciting talents of steven bc and vrrs. the duo come through dangerously correct with their first release, and -functionz- is an instant hit, one of those tunes that has managed to find the perfect balance between drums and bass, melodies and vocals - a true old-school a-side for the heads. on the flip, -utukmylife (on the dancefloor)- is more speed garage than house, and the two producers pack another mean punch with this total banger, -house will remember-, on the other hand, is a real piece of chicago magic, a classic us house anthem with a rolling pile of drums, a huge swarm of bass and the right level of tape distortion. excellent

ltd 2016 repress - delusions of grandeur have had an exceptional couple of years since their inception in 2009 with fourteen vinyl 12s from a host of producers helping to put them at the top of the pile of underground labels making house music for discerning ears. it was only a matter of time before the label took the logical next-step into artist albums and here they are with the debut lp from 6th borough project entitled one night in the borough. its more than likely that youve come across 6th borough releases or edits on labels such as instruments of rapture, jisco or permanent vacation as well as having kick started the whole thing off here at delusions of grandeur with their release the soul part ii (under the aka craig smith & the revenge). its also more than likely youve been in some late night establishment whilst the revenge provided musical accompaniment on his record players seeing as he is one of the most in demand djs playing underground house and disco on the scene right now.

with four original tracks from chris carrier, this new ep is based around the original detroit vibe, with a hint of acid. the tracks all take their titles from famous nuclear devices, giving the music a foreboding overtone. rds-1 was the first weapon developed by the russians during the arms race of the early 20th century. the track is deep, driving and morose yet full of life. trinity was the codename of the very first nuclear test in 1945, this track is a shivering acid beast, minimal and absorbing. bwr 3 takes its name from one of the reactors at the doomed fukushima plant, subtle elements of funk flow through this restrained number. lastly comes chicago pile 1, the worlds first ever nuclear reactor, and a track that embodies the ominous possibilities of such an invention.
