as summer sets into fall, we deliver an ep that functions like one of those lights-on hand-clappers you get when the djs been asked to kill the music at the end of a long, sweaty night but for the season. its a last-ditch effort to keep the sun shining and the temperature high, a final bid to keep the days starting early and ending late. we know the inevitable is around the corner, but for a moment more we can pretend its not.

the industry of dance music can be as soul-crushing as any other. those thrills and spills of late, loud nights come with a best-before expiry date, after which even the most seasoned selector-producer-scenemaker begins to wrinkle their nose. to have experienced it all over 15+ years and seek to see it unfold again through fresh eyes, what sort of lunatic would willingly put themselves through that? v would. so its a new character, but who was the mysterious v in a past life? make your own conclusions. a little digging will lead you toward the origin story, but sometimes the pleasure comes from the unknowing. opt to enjoy the silence. silence, however, is not the focal point for v. in fact, this new form is a way to discard baggage and revitalise the process of music making.

never underestimate a quiet guy. soft spoken and well-mannered alexander pletnev moved 3 years ago from the russian city of st. petersburg to the lithuanian capital of vilnius. that has been more than enough time for him to make the city his own. a co-founder of a hip barber’s shop that also hosts an improvised vinyl second hand corner, not to mention a cozy little bar where he can be found serving a quirky selection of beers, alex soon embraced influences filtered through the local nightlife institution ‘opium club’. his production powerhouse pletnev explores darker territories and far-out music lands untouched by his bright and melodic creative alter ego - ponty mython. the st. bones ep follows his well received and strongly selling offerings on meda fury and bahnsteig23. the ep’s two tracks, of contrasting mood and tempo, are accompanied by two top drawer remixes from the japanese tailor of sound and taste ryota opp and on-the-rise fellow st. petersburg producer and selector, inga mauer.

-soca trance- will bring some extra heat on the dance floor, it s a heavily cut-up, rough electronic soca rhythm with fragments of looped steeldrum melody on top. -i m alive- is another latin banger, a piece of proto house with some lush vocals in the background and a synthesized tropical bird flying over. on the flip, kalao is an underground afro/french drum track with lots of flanged percussion, cheering black vocals and an elephant passing by. body & soul is the most discoish edit of all: a hypnotic groove with a killer baseline (and a flute sound) interrupted by an uplifting drumbreak.

lithuanian artist pletnev debuts on sze with 3 tracks of ethno-techno, backed with a remix from ploy. having previously released on the likes of meda fury, bahnsteig23 and le temps perdu, the &#8203,,thrown furniture ep&#8203,, sees pletnev delve into the harder-edged side of his work.
the a-side features &#8203,,her cruel smile &#8203,,and thrown furniture, &#8203,,two acid fuelled workouts with a strong rhythmic pulse and those afro-tinged samples that are fast becoming a characteristic sound of the artist. the b-side kicks off with &#8203,,my first teacher, &#8203,,a creepy and slow burning trip that gets right under the skin. rounding off the release is a remix from ploy, coming off the back of his standout eps for hemlock and hessle audio, the remix is a dive headfirst into the distinctive sludgy sound of this young artist.

the 04am a-side contains two south-african 80 s bubblegum tracks, revamped by young dj and producer perdu. he provided the tracks with delicate intros and rearranged them with new percussion, synths and deeper basslines. on the flip afrobot delivers two kind of new beat cuts, making the originals more abstract by some heavy chopping, reducing the amount of samples used, and adding disco breaks to the track jungle. handstamped with another drawing by frank koedood.

the horst sind zurück mit ihrem neuen album *tofte*. das wort stammt aus dem münster-typischen, rotwelschen sozialdialekt masematte und bedeutet so viel wie gut, oder auch toll. manfred schulz, als langzeitbegleiter der band, war erneut als co-produzent, tontechniker und freundschaftlicher berater am start. mehr noch als beim vorgängeralbum, fällt bei *tofte* die gemeinsame freude an guten songs auf, die von verschiedensten einflüssen aus der popgeschichte und den eigenen plattenschränken geprägt sind, sich aber jenseits von rock-klischees, muckertum, schlagerspießigkeit oder kunsthandwerk bewegen. aber wie auch immer: hauptsache der song tuts und er klingt gut.

i just woke and its pretty cold outside. i havent opened the window yet, but i somehow know it and im listening to these six tracks again and try to make an approximation of why and how i have done this ep. they are pretty different from each other but tell the same story or at least are part of the same one as a matter of fact. maybe they were done as an excuse for my overdue album which is scheduled again for this year or maybe just because i was going through some odd times and needed to immerse myself in doing something. in this case music. more the latter i guess. ok so, the opening track is in a way the end of an era and the last one the opening of a fresher one. and the rest fills in the gaps in between those two moments i guess. i hate conceptual things anyways. i never know or want to know why i do certain things. concepts define something before it already begins its existence and trying to explain why is pretty useless. so here it is. the recording of a certain period of time in my tiny existence. with collaborations with jaw (dop), my brother atilla, who is also responsible for the artwork, and jonny cruz. by the time its out itll be a distant memory for me but hope it lasts a bit longer for anyone that listens to it
