futuristic-funk starchild jimmy edgar returns with the third single to be taken form his recent album >majenta< out earlier this year on hotflush. this time edgar shoves is free-spirited sexual appetite in your face, with a slice of stripped-down, upfront electro-funk complete with j.g. ballard-inspired lyrics of car-crash sexual fetishism. alongside the original album cut, two alternate takes are reworked by a pair of producers at the very top of their game: jon convex and john talabot. whilst talabot creates an eerie and downright epic re-imagining through his combination of amazonian electronics and volume manipulation, the convex cut enhances the dance floor potential of the original with bubbling, arpeggiated 303 bass.

damon kirkhams solo adventure under the alias jon convex continues. the first of an exclusive three part limited 300 white vinyl run ep series leading up to the cd album release. the release also contains a remix from french duo gucci vump (aka brodinski & guillaume of the shoes). kirkham has also been working on the staging of the album, which will have custom-made visuals based on the covers of the album and the eps.

having finished recording the new zombie zombie album (out: april 2012), etienne jaumet leaves temporarily the duo to record a solo piece, as a need to find oneself again … if the word satori means spiritual awakening, the title track that offers etienne seems to describe the way to this awakening … a winding and sometimes dark path, taking inspiration from both dark disco and synth wave (etienne is particularly keen of those genres, you can listen to his new podcast for versatile records as an evidence) and also to some kind of trance… on b side, jon convex, newcomer on the dubstep / uk garage field and signed on martyns label, delivers a clearly club oriented version, by injecting syncopated beat and the funky groove unique to uk garage.

john talabot and axel boman teamed up in 2017 for their r&s debut the night land where they got to flex their creative muscles over eight tracks of rich synth jams. the two electronic artists have been independently successful in their respective careers, but as pitchfork expressed in their glowing review their collective output doesn’t sound much like eithers work, it doesnt even necessarily reflect the thin, convex sliver where their interests overlap. instead, theyve hit upon something new. this new sound also proved to be a hit with the likes of mojo, phonica, xlr8r, self titled and dj mag all including it their annual best of lists. the artists have now handpicked four artists to create their own vision of the talaboman sound. superpitcher, samo dj and luke slater under his l.b. dub corp alias have all seriously delivered the goods.

the idea of merging recordings of different instruments and sounds appeared out of recording harp for an audiobook. the result are 4 innovative, unpredictable and completely homeproduced tracks on the a-side of the record, which negates the cliché of the harp as an apparently benign tool for gentle and smooth tunes. in order to go one step further in breaking tradition-steeped sounds there are 3 remixes from 3 different artists coming from the more technoid world of music (technical grief, carina posse, mod.civil) on the b-side. there you’ll find the attempt to alienate the original instruments and let them coalesce with danceable electronic sounds in a new context. the 12- is on black vinyl, packaged in a silkscreen print cover and limited to 200 pieces.

mid-paced, fresh n funky electro gear on this eight track ep from swedish artist, obergman. all very nicely produced while maintaining the quirky factor throughout which results in an ep that gels perfectly from start to finish. having first appeared on luke eagoggles label stillenben earlier in 2012 abstract forms quickly got in on the action, and once again obergman doesnt disappoint, the funk is strong in sweden. limited to 250 copies.

nonplus+ label owners instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with al bleek working under his boddika alias and kid drama as jon convex. here we have boddikas first output on nonplus+ after his debut on naked lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming ep on swamp 81. his work has been supported by djs across the board such as benji b, oneman, scuba, shy fx, martyn, ramadanman, joy orbison, leofah, skream and zed bias amongst many others.

without much need for introduction, archipel welcomes the talent of minus niederflur who bring with them the darkly blinding >lumen ep<. a lumen is a unit used to measure the perceived power of light and this ep is most definitely very powerful and certainly can be perceived as such. this is where the line between something as intangible as light is crossed and becomes tangible as one would feel an intense and warming heat which goes so far as to manifest itself as something with mass. title track >lumen< is the focused, convex lens, knife edge point of light which focuses a small portion of the suns energy so densely it could initiate many a blaze. >masse< is as dense as the most solid of gems and radiates dark light like heavy water and is sure to corrupt any geiger counter within its radioactive reach while >flor< stacks itself as high and wide as it can go, building further and further upon itself, and just as one would think it could build no further, it rotates itself back to within and further densifies, an inescapable sort of density of which one is eternally locked pleasurably within. >flucht< raises one into the blackest skies of night and flies hour after hour through blood orange clouds filled with the atmospherically scattered light from what was temporarily civilization below but is now just a memory shaded in the delight of being closed within the phosphorescence of late night fog.

a ton of steel and pipes used as instruments? à driving steel beats, accompanied by synthesizer sounds and experimental industrial samples create the sound of pale musics premiere release >phsychomania<. for sure this record, presented by matt eno and steve morell, head of pale music, is no easy listening. five bands / projects come together on this sampler, all of them top name current level of electronic and industrial music. from time to time the music appears to be dark and eerie. guest vocalists include luna di morph and rosa lee riza.
