aar is a project by milan-based producer, dj and designer giorgio di salvo. the first grade lp is his first record under this name, self-released in collaboration with haunter records, the first chapter in a new series dedicated to tonal and rhythmic experimentation. advanced audio research is the ironic definition of this new music course of his, a nod to the large amount of esoteric studio gear accumulated and (ab)used during the years. the project itself is the result of years of study and experimentation with generative music matrices, based on the application of a three dimensional array of variables and unknowns to algorithmic pattern creation. the result is punishing, close to the most radical exploits in ear-wrenching breakcore, footwork and jungle, albeit with a sonic and structural finesse that reveals the producer’s manic dedication. track a-4 is produced in collaboration with somec and b-01 in collaboration with heith, channeling abstract and melancholic vibes into the project. vinyl comes in ultra ltd. edition of 100 copies, each one wrapped in a different hand-printed folder.

sascha borchardt (a.k.a monoloc) will start a label, unterland, with a new ep.
the label will serve as a vehicle through which the german producer takes a step away from the club environment by presenting new sonic interpretations, including experimental, minimalist, and atmospheric. material will come from monoloc himself and friends, and the focus will be on “dramatic” sounds with drone and noise influences. think movie soundtracks and film music, albeit with both feet planted in the electronic genre. each release will aim to “tell a story” through 8 to 10 productions.
unterland will launch in end of march 2018 with a collaborative ep by monoloc and beauty of inconsequenz, a unsearchable and unidentified project with no previous recording history. the eight tracks are all based heavily on field recordings, the sound is dark and deeply atmospheric with dubstep influences. while distanced somewhat from the 4/4 format, the tracks are cerebral and hypnotic.
from there on, there will be 3-4 releases per year, each of which will be accompanied by high quality artwork as curated by borchardt, who will work closely with selected photographers and artists to provide imagery that aesthetically compliments the music.

dj koyote has long been a dab hand at discerning house music. thankfully, his latest offers more of the same. seeing the light of day on his own supergenius records imprint, france n trance sees the french producer perk up with no less than five original cuts, each of which boasts its own inimitable charm. opening up the release is the sounds of the title track. a melancholy effort full of warm, hazy vibes, its skipping, playful ethos is characterised by its twinkling, charming melodies. a smile-inducing track that s sure to prompt delirium on the floor, it gets us underway with some distinction. hey baby sees the producer opt for more uptempo strands. featuring a killer hip hop vocal sample and a series of off-kilter elements, it s a completely different proposition to what s come before - albeit one that emphasises the producer s knack for the unpredictable. just a young thing sees the producer hark bark to vintage chicago times with a jam that could well have been lifted from trax s back catalogue. full of booming kicks, claps and snares, this one plays out like a modern interpretation of a classic armando joint. the quite expertly names ladonna is an exercise is peak-time funk flavours, before business class sees us out the door with another track that suited to the night s most fervent moments. an industrial-tinged track of techno persuasions, it s a hot and heaving effort that s as likely to leave you in a cold sweat as it is reaching for the lasers. there s no doubt about it - koyote s latest is a triumph from the beginning to the end.

>lost in love< is the first single to be taken from l-vis 1990s forthcoming debut album, neon dreams. continuing a collaborative partnership which began on last years >forever you< single, breakthrough bristol-based vocalist javeon mccarthy once again takes centre stage here. through its melodious analogue synths, infectious vocal hooks and sub-4 minute running length, >lost in love< in many ways serves as the ideal entrée to neon dreams. this is the sound of l-vis 1990 revisiting the routes of his dance music love affair. picking up his own theme from the original—the classic french bassline—l-vis 1990s neon dreams club mix pushes the low-end triumphantly to the fore. club is certainly the operative word here, feel the remixs bangalter-esque bassline drop and your minds eye fixes instinctively upon an undulating dancefloor. the night slugs allstars — l-vis 1990, bok bok, jam city — also take the floor on their version, albeit via the neon-tinged scenic route. much like the label itself, their remix is replete with colour, difficult to define and relentlessly innovative.

the thule vaults open up once more to give us further insight into the foundations of one of the great bastions of icelandic deep house and techno. plastic is an early alias of yagya, who was on searing form when he originally made the river electric 12- back in 1999. a metallic finish gives -brain plasticity- it s unique appeal, while -translated translations translated- heads into dubbier territory (albeit with some cheeky bitcrushing thrown in for good measure). whichever cut you plump for, thule have dusted down yet another gem of unique scandinavian techno you won t want to be without.

since his massive works on sunday ep from the middle of 2016 archie s star has risen considerably, peaking with his inclusion at no.70 on ra s end of year dj poll. here he steps up for ep duties once more on his spiritual home of fuse london, driven to distraction kicks things off with a bubbling acidic groover while telegram also harnesses the power of the 303 albeit in a more trippier form. channelled rounds things off with an elegantly floated groove, it s melodic elements and aquatic kick heralding the shift in seasons beautifully.

take a trawl through mushrooms projects’ ample back catalogue, and you’ll immediately be struck by their constant artistic progression. throughout their career, giorgio giri and marco lentano have refused to stand still, with each successive release offering a subtle signs of musical evolution.
they’re at it again on rivea corymbosa, a sophomore set that’s markedly different – albeit similarly minded – to their 2013 debut album, undergrass.

after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

hush arbors and arbouretum have each been exploring for years now the intersection of progressive folk and psychedelic rock, albeit filtered through their own distinct sounds. it was only a matter of time before their paths would cross. keith wood and dave heumann met at a show in baltimore and discovered their mutual appreciation for each others music. the two bands planned a joint european tour, and recorded aureola to further showcase and celebrate their complimentary sounds.

reissue of in demand classic.dubtraxx was new on the scene back in 2019 when they dropped this ep which has since become something of a mini-classic. it came on their own label rhythm n vibe and now this is seriously heavyweight gear gets reissued. soundbwoy request is especially dangerous, working plenty of dub, reggae and jungle motifs into a rugged garage structure and sounding utterly ruff in the process. towards 99 is no slouch either, albeit on a slightly housier tip than the raucous a-side. the -2000 tribute mix- of next millenium meanwhile sneaks out a few of the eerie tones you d expect to hear around the time that dubstep first started to emerge.

this is a very limited run of 250 copies. mystical circles is a brand-new imprint with its eyes firmly on the dancefloor. the label s first missive comes courtesy of island times deejay, a dj/producer/re-editor previous best known for his dj mixes, which were uniformly full of obscure, hard-to-find disco gems. we have no idea what the source material is for either of the edits here, but they sound like caribbean disco records. disco smoking is unfeasibly heavy, driving and stomping, with mazy horn solos, jazzy funk guitars and hazy vocal snippets riding a booming bassline and sweaty, non-stop drums. dawson street is a more relaxed, and rubbery affair, albeit one rich in chiming melodies, spacey synth solos, winding sax lines and elastic bass guitar. as the welsh would say: tidy!

combo lulo returns to names you can trust for their sophomore single, digging deeper into the diversified sounds of the caribbean that helped define their debut. while the first single took a jamaican foundation south into the neighboring continent, fusing the sensibilities of rock steady with those of classic afro-latin orchestras, this single goes far east. inspired by the heady and sublime sounds of foundational ska mixed with east african influences, (think buster s islam, don d s addis ababa or further east), the sieve & the sand is a brand new composition within this natural order, albeit with the fortune of different reggae eras and studio styles to draw from. divided into two parts (but also available seamlessly as it was played in the studio), combo lulo s talented players move effortlessly from the galloping shuffle of ska into a deep and dark, roots radics-styled instrumental. its a lovely ode to the original styles of reggae, but also another impressive accomplishment that will surely leave listeners and new fans in anticipation of the shape of things to come for combo lulo.

laura jones has had a breakthrough 2012. fulfilling touring dreams and winning the hearts of the global scene with her sensual melodic house and seductive, driving dj sets, it may come as a surprise that let me in is lauras first, albeit highly anticipated, solo ep. dropping on visionquest, let me in develops lauras signature sound, painting a fuller picture of the artist through deeper techno shades, live vocals and trademark hypnotic style.

the drip ep brings together four distinctive producers and one set of sounds - the drips. the result is a compilation of 4 tracks that bring the swing and sampling of some of accidental jnr’s finest to produce a soaking wet dancefloor. first up is label boss matthew herbert with a trademark groove that harks back to his wishmountain moniker albeit found lurking in the swamp. cosmo sheldrake takes a slight departure from his usual multi-instrumentaling live-looping avant-folk to deliver a track that could only be described as travelling circus aqua-techno. bahraini born, french / us bred and now edinburgh dwelling video game builder, sound designer and sometime scottish league football referee yann seznec opens the b-side with an absolute stormer of a rain drenched club hook. sussex based producer crewdson and builder of such electronic instruments as the eggiophone and concertronica closes proceedings with a drizzling evolving 2-step number.

for their fourth release dreamers recordings welcomes the talented duo ex.society. after releasing on their own imprint, the rivabella ep is continued proof of the pair’s penchant for classic sounding, albeit forward-thinking, house music. full of warm, fuzzy vibes from the get-go, this is beautifully melodic fare that’s perfectly suited to those sunrise moments. smooth, jazzy and elegant.

monday off is a vinyl only record label from brooklyn, new york, founded by mary yuzovskaya. its ethos is to showcase artists that explore techno s hypnotic side, specifically where trippy and dark music goes deep yet dynamic. for the third release, nyc/berlin/washington dc transplant arthur kimskii dives in with a heady trio of his productions. title track -verbal variance- slowly unfurls with a myriad of textures and sounds to both confuse and delight the senses, while -swan an ocean for you- takes on similar terrain albeit kicked up a notch and warmer in tone. -basement moves- is an emotive and partially beat-less affair steeped in layers of noise, and moff favorite stephanie sykes strips the a-side down for a sinister and chugging remix.

primus motor sees ekman return to many of the sounds that gained him a reputation as an artist on labels like bunker and berceuse heroique. although harsh bucking acid lines, pockmarked notes, brutal beats and eerie echo are all present, a new tone has been added to the caustic palette. a psychological nuance, an undercurrent of the inchoate has been investigated and exploited to chilling effect. crippling psychoses. debilitating neuroses. physical pain. suffering stalks this first full vinyl album. sinister sounds encircle the eight offerings, hovering like vultures over inhospitable plains of ashen grey, jagged peaks and dark sweeping swamps. hope is all but drawn away in this bleached audio landscape, drained by sheer synthlines and reduced renderings. amidst the sorrow and strain there are pin pricks of joy, albeit bleak and pallid ones. an album that unnerves as it engages, a collection of icy radiance and industrial indifference from a dutch master.

a little over six years ago, let s play house because, in earnest, with a 12-inch called indoor pool. fittingly, the track it revolved around was by runaway, the duo comprised of marcos cabral and jacques renault, and featured remixes by some tight friends of the imprint, beautiful swimmers, slow hands, and soft rocks. we thought it d be fun to celebrate our birthday for once, but not with something too obvious (e.g. a compilation) or too involved (e.g. a warehouse party blowout). what we came up with is this, a 10-inch that reflects a little of the past into the present. appropriately, it includes edits by two of the artists on that debut ep. runaway s is a dusted-off and remixed secret weapon from the act s early days while soft rock s is classic soft rocks, albeit from a more current vintage (it was recorded this year). both absolutely rock. a little twisted, a little tilted, a little tipsy, but, as always, tight and tidy. funny how, since 2009, everything has changed and nothing has changed at all for this label of ours.

london minimal techno label trapped ldn turn their attention to new talent rhys samson, who gets freaky from the get go with the snaking beats and threads of psychoactive melodies and found sounds that make up the snappily titled -paramedic to the dancefloor-. cosmjn delivers a very different kind of remix of the original that has a more discoid flavour to it, although it maintains the late night trippiness that trapped prefer overall. -religious clowns- is a deeper jam that seeks to soothe, albeit with plentiful rippling details still coursing through its veins, which alan castro capitalizes on with a remix that gets even more intricate and strange.

aiby returns to vizual with an amazing ep, albeit without the noise. this solo project is deep, dark and freaky and showcases aiby’s love for vintage gear. yet there’s nothing old about these tracks — aiby’s sound is fresh and forward looking with hard driving beats that have just the right amount of wiggle. these tracks sound great played loud and are perfect for deep and dirty late nites. a forthcoming iz & diz remix of “you need a freak” will round out the project quite nicely.

london based club night and newly formed label snap crackle & pop s third releases comes in the form of a dark take on new wave influenced techno from berlin based new yorker curses. side a kicks off with a hypnotic techno stomper another view which playfully tips its hat to early electro albeit through a visor of coldwave inspired guitars. together in the dark delves into even darker territores with ice cold organs reaching for the light through the grinding ambient yet groovy undertones. on the b-side inga mauer ramps up the dancefloor tension with her machine like acid rework pulsating and crashing urgently together in the dark, whilst the golden filter turn out a low slung trip of brooding synths and haunting vocals before cascading down the rabbit hole in a swell of industrial motorik beats and percussive explosions in their take on another view

fresh from an appearance on balearic blah blah, andi hanley sidles over to fellow mancunian ruf dugs ruf kutz label with some beautiful, sunkissed tones in mind to keep you gliding on the good vibes no matter how grim it may be outside. raffles is a gently pattering piece that seems to hark from the terry riley school of repetition, albeit played through blocky synth tones and delicate refrains. ba nou is a more flamboyant 80s-flavoured cut with some excellent tom fills, slick guitar licks and powerful brass stabs. syn-syn is a melancholic, borderline noirish synth ballad, and kinshasa heads for the dancefloor with its pronounced beat and canned funk sound.

hot on the heels of inre rydmen, the ep that the swedish multi-instrumentalist group tommy awards released via origin peoples in mid-june, come the remixes. drafting in a cohort of the very best, this impending release will see the likes of jonny nash, coyote and mystic jungle tribe jump on the remix duties, touching original productions with their unmistakable idiosyncrasies. bartosz kruczynski, the polish producer better known under his earth trax guise, is another name credited on the release, offering up a 15-minute epic as he reinterprets penultimate track, hans logan. also to see an appearance on this ep is the romanian eirwud mudwasser, offering up a rendition of the track ‘mike sierra foxtrot’ reworked in a similar esoteric expanse, albeit it quite a bit more lucid. oscillating electronics mesmerise and an arpeggiating synth melody gradually make way for marimbas. sweeping, elongated strums of guitar stretch out like the horizon and the dialogue between various melodic elements continues throughout as we bear witness to various transformations. irregardless of pacing, the meditative quality remaining consistent throughout each glorious edit.

following an incredible sophomore album for mörk and a stunning self-released white label, grant graduates to the lobster theremin main label with a full ep proper of signature studio deep house.
refined song-writing, valve warmth, studio air and dusty edges, grant’s production style has taken on a life of its own as he’s progressed from early split eps on the lauren bacall to entering the lobster fray. his influences, also showcased via his temporary state label, are worn on his sleeve albeit with a unique sonic quality and structured tension & release that is mastered by so few over such a lulling, woozy template of sound.

the next set of the japanese musical tales on hhatri s imprint comes from takecha (aka takeshi fukushima), a producer who has played a part in creating some of the seminal pieces of house music that have originated from japan. his music is characterised by the perfect marriage of experimentation and emotional content. for those that know, takecha s first ep kind of deep released on his own imprint, gwm records, in 1995 is a secret gem among japanese house music collectors. only 100 copies were ever available and it is a subtle reminder of what and how deep house should sound like. takecha provides no less in a tale of shiga four gorgeous tracks that provide some insight into his own creative, albeit humble genius in his approach to producing music. fresh off the press are three previously unreleased tracks with the addition of freak out. released in 1998. tip!

lf rmx arrives as new non-profit platform which will share only edits originally made by len faki for playing in his dj sets. what began as small technical tweaks has since grown into passionate work, the edits eventually becoming an important staple to the special feel and flow of the figure head’s well-renowned approach to djing. the series’ first release features the rework of dj bone’s 2016 slammer ‘black patterns’, whose heavily rolling nature the hardspace mix builds upon. keeping the oldschool drums’ weighty feel, len faki gives his a edit a more compact shell and punchy edge. the centerpiece piano stabs also reign over this version, albeit rising in a glimming, glistening fashion, making it a definite choice for this summer. the hardspace tool on the other side steers clear of piano and vocal, rather developing a lively sequence of unmistakenly len faki-styled, vigorous percussive permutations. as this project is very much a matter of the heart, and as much about honoring the orignal artists’ work as it is about sharing the edits with a wider audience, there will be no monetary gain involved. instead all the proceeds will be donated fully to straßenkinder e.v., a berlin organization fighting against child poverty

the two diggers project has been steadily increasing in productivity since first emerging in 2015, and now it makes the move to jack s house recordings with this no-nonsense three-tracker. -head trip- keeps things simple but utterly effective with a crisp beat, subby bassline and catchy lead arpeggio, while -down the street- takes a groovier, albeit equally stripped back, approach. -you are my groove- spreads itself across the b-side with a brighter disposition that lets warm and soulful samples slip in between the classic house rhythms. if you re looking for straight-up jams that will do the business on the floor, look no further.

house music with love turn once again to swedish duo swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of balearic goodness. original track -be there- is certainly laced with an air of scandinavian cool, not least thanks to erika rosen s dreamy vocals, but there s a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. halllo halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. ghost immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

karim sahraoui, known by releases on labels such as transmat, cocoon and arts, as well as dj appearances on boiler room and on dancefloors all around the world, makes his debut on off recordings. book of life is a melodic techno track in karim s signature style. warm and emotional, albeit with a strong drive for the dancefloor, it can set a strong accent in a set. italy s dast created a slamming peaktime techno interpretation, which is sure to create a massive effect on the dancefloor. syncopated chords and a rolling groove build towards an epic break. -exodus- is aptly named as a perfect track to close the set by the end of the night. lush and warm pads and melodies evoke a warm and optimistic atmosphere. anton pieete remixed exodus with a minimalistic and more groove-focused interpretation. altogether an ep with a timeless feel, spanning the borders between techno, house and electronica.

argy s these days label is an occasional treat in the world of stripped down tech house, and it makes its first appearance for 2016 with a selection of club-ready remixes from the label boss, tackling various productions from german techno mainstay paul brtschitsch. the -floor adaptation- of -green- heads into subterranean pastures, albeit with a powerful beat propelling it, and -eternal aspects- maintains that underground mood with a warmer synth repertoire. on the more flamboyant b-side, -squeezed- takes on a wild old-skool quality perfect for more fiery moments on the floor before -subbass- continues the jacking theme in fine style.

following up on his exceptional 12&#8243,,,, debut numb (figure 73) earlier this year, seatoc mass delivers another ep of finely tuned and highly diversified techno deep space explorations. starting on an atmospheric note, cipher’s intricate melody winchingly twists its way under your skin while airy breakbeats faintly hint at the producer’s uk roots. in contrasting fashion the bleep- driven lost lakes sticks to its metronomic stomp, making for a simple yet utterly effective tool. choral howls and detuned synths merge on transform for a gentle yet trance-inducing introduction to the flipside. emotive highlight rain then sees the manchester producer sonically recreate a thundering storm, complete with flashing strokes of lightning and a downpour of celestial scale. the breakbeat returns on closer flying buttress, albeit now at much faster tempo, exploring the common ground between futuristic grime and techno. blending all these different styles and their distinctive tropes in a coherent statement is a feat not easily accomplished. yet here seatoc mass pulls it off again, developing further the confines of both his personal and the label’s sound.

bristols banoffee pies are back with their 11th edition. but as far it goes musically: this certainty aint bristol! starting out with the smoothly reduced tendencies of local lad christian jays rhotic which sounds inspired by the sounds of trelik, there s more of the same (albeit much dubbier and smoked out) on starry nite life courtesy of utrecht s larry de kat very paranoid afterhour vibes on this one! on the flip we ve got some more dubbed out fare courtesy of christian jay, again, who enlists a bit of help from crump on the rusty and dust coated gg3. all caps artist florist adds a touch of vancouver to proceedings with the squelchy dj tool blacky.

for the opening ep from too many squares, frank butters manages to gene-splice together the raw dna from all of the ugly-beautiful sounds present in the birth of modern dance music. -conditioning for solitude- is the hum of dark tubes, the slice and hiss of sharp synthesised percussion and the scream of blissful dementia. the mutant that existed for a brief and joyous frozen moment while disco was still birthing house. -body burn” is the tropics with a black sun and africanism with a stopwatch instead of a heart. recalling experimentalist forays by the likes of liaisons dangereuses, patrick cowley and karen finley, the 2 originals on offer manage to recall the raw passion of an era without feeling contrived or derivative. the ep is rounded off by sheila fleurraters remix of * 3 minute warning* which continues the pioneer-ist motif, albeit allying itself with a much more early industrial aesthetic.

faraway reach casts classixx’s young-but-nostalgic melodies and sublime chords in a more mature, restrained light, albeit no less lively and bright. establishing themselves as producers of note on their debut lp (pitchfork called them “great songwriters, too”), faraway reach delivers powerfully smooth and soulful jewels that are still decidedly their own - the classixx signature is one that can’t be traced. their love of plaintive voices and disco-inspired grooves is as evident as ever, but this time around everything is a bit bolder, the cast is bigger, the melodies distilled into a higher potency - it’s all just as good, but better. “on the first record, we wanted to include only people that were our friends, and have it be really personal…” david begins, a thought blake finishes: “this time we wanted to make a record with a lot of different kinds of vocals, to see if we could be the common thread.” the album traverses locales, vocalists and inspirations. it s a fitting movement for the duo, from venice beach to the mountains of south africa and everywhere in between - a faraway reach.

dueve is a very mysterious project, probably due to the intense (albeit exotic) eastern folk instrumentation that populate their sonic structures. rené audiard & ali Çak&#305,,r have been exploring a bit of it all from crunchy techno grooves to emotionally charged slow drives, and together they managed to create a very peculiar sonic balance that captivates from the moment it passes our ears.

2016 repress!!!! slow life finally get out the first release from their label, albeit not before the second one dropped! skittering, jersey-edged numbers sit alongside juno-acid bangers and a wailing sax detroit cut. killer!

arranged by godin, taurelle the original trakc was written by georg christian lehms, composed by bach and adapted from bach cantata widerstehe doch der sünde bwv 54. here bach’s church cantata for solo voice meets languid gainsbourg & birkin, albeit in german, with exquisite choir and strings. nicolas godin says i wanted songs on contrepoint, to act like poles that hold up a tent. this piece starts with a very strange chord, which was avant garde for its day. bach’s scores are outside any rules, which i wanted to exploit. i also wanted the lyric in german because no one expects german to sound sexy and cool. the main singer is gordon tracks. the other voice is dorothée de koon, a friend of a french artist i know - they both have german blood.
