kawuku sound is the coming together of uk producers contours & cervo and ugandan percussion troupe fonkodelis arkestra. this is the culmination of a month-long creative process that was born out of the nyege nyege affiliated boutiq studio in kawuku, kampala - uganda. the music was written and recorded in this shared residency space, home to musicians and visual artists from all over east africa and beyond, and a hub for kampala s underground electronic music scene. boutiq studio s diy mentality provided the perfect environment for experimentation, allowing the fusion of these disparate sounds. kawuku sound is a reflection of this, merging the hypnotic and trance-inducing percussion of buganda drumming with elements of contemporary electronics and traditional instrumentation. this the first album release to come out on manchester imprint banana hill as they continue to push the boundaries of afro-electronic sounds.

this is what happened when keimpe koldijk (one half of bebe fang) and wouter venema (musician and visual artist) locked themselves up during the summer 2011 in a 14th century church in the village of blessum. this frisian village, in the northern part of holland, consists of less then 100 inhabitants. in this tranquil and withdrawn environment the musicians recorded their improvisations on the church organ (which is the second oldest in europe)... accompanied with subtle electronics and a few other instruments... the result is a stunning experience of free spirited music ... meditative soundscapes, lo-fi ambient music and drones including accidental recorded sounds of the surroundings during the sessions... all of this has a charming lo-tech and -live- feeling which only enhances the listening experience... turn off the lights, light a candle (or a few), lie down and let go.

jeremiah jae (aka black daffi) is an experimental hip-hop artist born and raised on the south side of chicago. he is a visual artist, producer, emcee and founding member of black jungle squad, a music collective consisting of close friends and family. early works by jae dating back to 2007, display his unique style and approach to crafting his own version of “hip-hop”. the genre is one of many foundations the artist uses to communicate his range of styles as shown on previous self-released albums, compilations and collaborations (holy smoke, oliver the 2nd, l’orange, cohenbeats, pbdy), as well as praiseworthy offerings on brainfeeder and warp records. with his newest solo album daffi, jae expands on his production and speaks in the persona of his alter ego to express a darker side.

planet mu are very happy to be releasing “vicious circles”, the debut ep by sinjin hawke and zora jones, who aside from producing music also run the audio-visual production unit “fractal fantasy”. zora released several collaborations on last year’s “visceral minds 2 including “dark matter” with planet mu’s jlin, while sinjin has collaborated with dj rashad, just blaze and mikeq, and also produced music for monoliths like kanye west and frank ocean. remarkably, given the breadth of their work, “vicious circles” is their first collaborative ep, and the first time either have released on vinyl.

uwalmassa is a sonic exploration project initiated by divisi62 – a sound and visual arts label based in jakarta, indonesia that examines the indonesian identity issue within a global context. the thought process behind their debut album bumi uthiri is to provide an alternative study on javanese gamelan composition and to experiment with its known and unknown structures. it is a deconstructed interpretation of a musical tradition that aims to stretch boundaries, but nevertheless, adhere to its core essence.

benjamin vigneron, also known as vronsky, was born in 1991 in aix-en-provence, france. as a teenager, drawn simultaneously to visual arts, cinema and music production, he made his first contact with techno by working for a local club as a graphic designer. during his 20s, while living between montreal, canada and marseille, france, it was revealed to benjamin he suffered from a heavy bipolar disorder. as a reaction, he started losing himself in free parties and increasingly dangerous habits. gradually learning to love himself despite his flaws, he kicked his risk-taking after he realized the love of music prevailed over anything else. equipped with a strong desire to share his vision despite not being able to perform as a dj, benjamin started a youtube channel and a collective named listening blue.

echocord’s colour sub-label returns early june with a four- track ep from eindhoven’s albert van abbe in the shape of ‘klangbilder’. dutch techno artist albert van abbe has nearly two decades of experience under his belt in various forms of musical and visual expression, releasing on his own vanabbe imprint, figure jams, semantica and no comment, as well as playing live and djing at hot spots across the globe such as berghain, tresor, dgtl and awakenings festival. ‘klangbilder 1’ leads with a robust rhythmic drive, employing bumpy toms, shuffled hats and lumpy kicks at its core as vacillating synths, tension building drones and menacing pizzicato strings develop throughout. ‘klangbilder 2’ takes things deeper next, retaining the dusty drums sound of the previous cut whilst stirring in airy ethereal pads and choppy, resonant stab sequences. ‘klangbilder 3’ kicks off the b-side with modulating synth whirrs, emotive organ tones and a muted drum tones throughout before ‘klangbilder 4’ closes the package, taking things beatless and cinematic via emotive synth leads, droning subs and expansive echoes.

ryan parks is a mixed media artist, music producer/performer, and ceo/founder of critically robust cassette tape label, harsh riddims. he was born in college park, ga and grew up skating all around atlanta, soaking up the dense kaleidoscopic cultural ooze found both in and outside the perimeter of atlanta. aside from his visual practice which usually takes shape as mixed media (jacob lawrence/matisse inspired in my opinion!) collage, he has been releasing music as fit of body for seven years. fit of body crafts soulful house ballads that draw on freestyle, bell hooks, old school detroit techno, jazz, and southern rap passed through a no wave paradigm. fit of body has previously released work on cgi, dka, ransom note, and his own label, harsh riddims. “black box no cops” is fit of body’s debut 2mr release, named for atlanta hallowed skate grounds, black box. the vinyl release includes a download code.

heady, astute, deep techno and ambient from blue veil, a new musical project from danny clancy. blue veils debut ep reveals gorgeously textured techno on tracks like wherethetimegoes and citizen score, as well as crafting some tender ambient passages on cuts like night czar and a kind of adventure. the ep will be released on dichotomy records, a new imprint, dedicated to refined electronic music. the labels ambition is to allow artists to explore dichotomies through their work, as they span sonic landscapes from pure ambient to techno, and other abstract dance sounds in-between. there will be a strong attention to the visual presentation of the label, with all artwork and photography also created by label boss danny clancy. with the next release lined up from ahu, and more to follow from there, the agenda for dichotomy records looks hugely promising indeed.

for his inaugural ep under new guise ‘yem gel, nts manchester resident and visual artist alecs pierce comes through with a four-track cacophony of sounds for dave maclean (django django) run label kick + clap. from previous experimental outings as obsidian pond, gristed petunia and, handi dogh he returns with this new project based solely on electronic compositions, giving the multi-instrumentalist artist a chance to further explore his electronic leanings. operating with a clear mission statement, yem gel moniker seeks to live up to its names reference to malleable ‘fictional future plastics by offering a set of genre-spanning compositions, drawing from multiple influences from ambient, drum ‘n bass or grime and leaving us wondering where he might take us next.

in a greek mythology, the river styx is the connection to the underworld, but also one of the few river goddesses. according to the myth, the river styx represents the border between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. the souls of the dead hoping at the riverbank to crossing into the underworld so as not to remain there forever.
the second release of the label unterland defines the stygian sound with its mystic and underworldly tone. additionally, the artwork underlines the musically interpretation also in a visual way. the image was created by talented photo artists salar kheradpejouh. his identity thrives on cinematic vision and matches perfectly to interpret the stygian sound artistically.
unterland 02 is a various artists ep by monoloc and jonas landwehr. with his dark production the young artist gained the attention of monoloc already 1.5 years ago, who then started to followed him closely as an artists as well as his creations. for monoloc it was clear that he wants to publish jonas’ music on his new arising label. jonas landwehr delivers three melancholic dub techno production, which are mostly influenced by his stay in the taiwanese capital taipeh.

voin oruwu is a project of kiev-based producer dmitriy avksentiev, also known as koloah. it originated out of avksentiev’s love for cinematography and mystical worlds. inspired by his own post-apocalyptic story, the producer decided he needed a soundtrack and visuals — so, voin oruwu was born, fusing together technology, science, art. he is visual thinker and takes music from cinematic perspective. images that are born in his head are transformed into music. he mixes heavy rhythm and futuristic sound into a single live act.

hmot aka stas sharifullin is siberian-born, moscow-based musician, curator, educator and multi-disciplinary artist from siberia. using modular synthesizer, field recordings and visual programming languages, hmot collects sounds and organizes them into structures, pushing traditional electronic music genres beyond their comfort zones. “permanent imbalance” is his ep debut on the berlin imprint oqko following a single contribution to the label’s “form_1” compilation. structurally, “permanent imbalance” is disorderly and elusive, it’s a techno record which has undergone a gregor samsaesque metamorphosis. embedded with dizzying polyrhythmics, the discontinuity at the heart of the record might also be its central directive – interrupting the ecstatic clubbing experience in favor of a contradictory reality which is impossible to describe with regular rhythms. boldly submitted to the niche of dance music deviations, “permanent imbalance” also reveals techniques directly derived from early institutional electronics and musique concrete. but where others would pile on the layers, sharifullin keeps it trim. these are just some finishing touches enhancing his rickety and multifaceted soundscapes. subject to constant deviations of its own temporality, this music proves to mirror the crisis in which modernity resides – a state of life out of balance which now appears to be permanent as never before.

lybes dimem is a project by visual artist and musician lukas rehm. with elaborate beat structures and the use of error, the music plays with cognitive phenomena and abstraction while maintaining an emotional refuge. lybes dimem is presented in formats ranging from spatial sound experiences to synesthetic shows complementing the auditive layers with visualizations of realtime data, computer graphics and moving image. lukas rehms installative art, and compositions have been internationally presented and awarded with multiple emerging arts prices. syncleft chronem is the first album released by lybes dimem in both digital and vinyl for-mat and accompanied by a moving image artwork. the title reflects the projects interest in the potential of difference, cognitive frictions and exertion: sync variability in the processing of auditive and visual signals, syncleft the synaptic cleft, which is a crucial empty spa- ce in biological neural networks, chronem the chroneme as a theoretical unit to measure the time of an articulated sound. mathematically clean sounds juxtapose patterns and transitions familiar from the realm of organic acoustics. multi-layered noise textures ex- plore the simulated space. a tem- porary continuity is provided by percussive and melodic elements, right until the next escalation, eventually awaiting a concluding resolution. the visual language explores different phenomena and techniques of cognition inspired by the rhetorics of big science (computer graphics, discontinuity of material, pop cultural references).

acid hologram is a record that travels between past, present and future. it is a real mix of different stiles, this makes it difficult to define as a genre. analogue incursions typical of acid and electro fuse with the melodic immediacy of trance, cohabit with cruel drum breaks and crazy idm interventions, creating a scenario composed of different styles and nuances, bizarre as well as emotional, enveloped by an idea of euphoria typical of the underground music of the early 90s, that allowed us to rediscover a personal sound, without compromise. produced between the end of 2013 and 2017, it was published as a limited edition and the first cassette release by weme records, the idea of the format justifies the need to publish such a high number of tracks, on an alternative medium that is able to reflect the identity of an equally unconventional sound. the tracklist titles reveal visual suggestions that recall the years of the rave scene of the early 90s and the cyberpunk imaginary in which the author grew up

transit valley is the debut release by joe coghill, a multi-disciplinary artist, musician and experimental publisher based in edinburgh. his practice incorporates sound, video, performance, social sculpture, facilitation and media distribution. borrowing from multiple spheres of influence, his scattered output operates from a liminal position. coghill works in an improvised and often haphazard way, incorporating disparate field recordings, modular synthesis and other sonic ambiences to create unpredictable and ephemeral multi-layer audio-visual performances. alongside this coghill has been producing music recreationally in his various bedroom studios over the past 14 years

osaka based producer 7fo. having previously released a cassette on rvng international, and a 7inch single on bokeh versions in 2017, this is the japanese producers debut full length vinyl release. the tracks, recorded between 2012 and 2017, have been tweaked, remastered and recorded to vinyl for the first time. the mysterious figure recorded the tracks at home, processing guitar sounds, using a sampler, synthesizer and junk equipment. following in the footsteps of the ambient giants of his native lands, 7fo’s music continues this illustrious heritage whilst offering something fresh, modern and beautifully rendered. he describes his own sound as gorgeous sustained tones and dreamlike oscillations that drift through the inorganic/electronic world reverberating through our subconscious creating sonic fables in our minds. the 12inch comes with artwork designed by label head & visual artist jack hardwicke. to accompany the release greek filmmaker george kountouras, who also collaborated on the artwork, has directed a gorgeous video for the title track moment

excise is a vinyl-focused label based out of san francisco, california. each release pairs a regional californian techno artist and a local visual artist, thus serving as a platform to fuse the two local creative scenes. its first release features label co-owner muon with 3 hypnotic raw analog tracks. many of these tracks received heavy play time in the san francisco underground, and now are seeing a broader release for the first time.

audio-visual artists soundwalk collective were granted exclusive access to the personal archive of the groundbreaking filmmaker and present their ambitious new album and remix ep: what we leave behind. the nyc and berlin based group were invited to aurally explore the archive of the seminal french director jean-luc godard and release their interpretations in an innovative new album what we leave behind. drawing on godards personal collection of shot film, reel- to-reels and historical ephemera, the recordings reveal the moments before and after the camera rolls, from stage directions and on-set asides to rehearsals, false stars and outtakes.

for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music – a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre – benga – this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.
