>one cycle< on the a-side is probably the most fierce, stripped and relentless thing ever released by modern love, a classic reduction that rotates into a frenzied crescendo of panning stabs and a washed out, chugging backbone that doesnt let-up throughout its 7 minute duration.

its been a while since the last rsb release, but then tracks like this dont come along every day! for their first vinyl appearance on a label other than their own, enigmatic german duo ancient methods do the honourable thing and break out the whip, a track that comes across like a 2-step party in the foundry of thor himself. lets lazily label it anvil techno, because as far as we are aware no has yet invented a genre that adequately desribes music such as this. and as we have come to expect, much the same can be said of the evil sickness that is eat like hawks by bjorn svin (with a little help from karsten pflum, jona olesen & copyflex!). it starts like it means to go on, with a gnarled loop and indecipherable distorted vocals, and is gradually tweaked and augmented to the point of destruction. all manner of ill bass, overdriven filters, zaps, clanky drums & feedback join the party before the whole affair is brought to an abrupt end by the strange foreign lady that we have come to know and love over the course of the track. truly music for small, sweaty, strobe-driven cellars.

computor rockers return after the worldwide hit that was computor interface (brk49) with another showcase of exactly how electro should be put together. all too often retro can mean dull and uninspired (or just lame plagiarism), but anyone who has been following ed dmxs career over the last several years will know that really isnt the way he plays the game. instead he understands the value of songs and melody... the beats are fresh, without a doubt, but it will usually be the tune or the lyrics that will hook you into a dmx production, the elements that turn just another electro track into something unique and valuable. and so it proves here, from the classic computor shock (which helpfully comes in vocal and instrumental versions for those who just cant do the voice thing) to the melodic and hooky electro-funk of how we used to rock and distributed processing. stunning as always!

the make up the break up is the first release on bruno pronsatos own thesongsays label. its the longest track in his catalog (38 minutes), and an even deeper excursion into his stylized harmony. this track was originally a track uncompleted while making, æwhy cant we be like us. revisiting it roughly a year ago, bruno began to reword it. what began as simple attempt to create an ep track out of it became a monster. what monster you ask? in a few words, the monster that is brunos love of musicality and sound design. muscially speaking, we are on a ride somewhere between a slithery house track and a drugged out night out in chelsea, new york in the 60s - and thats a good thing because we get the entirety of the ride: the ups, the downs, the clouded mentality, the broken heart and perhaps the mended one. its happy, its sad - its something that you can dance to, but most importantly, its music that we think you can revisit for many years, as it somehow reflects us, our lives. a playful and extended journey through love and disaster, or at least the soundtrack to it.

the original pressing of >get off< with serato control vinyl on the bside sold out before we even got them all back from the pressing plant. unfortunately we weren t able to press any more with serato, but we ve been getting requests all along and now that we ve got this jamming new remix from jack beats, we felt the time was right. if you don t know jack beats, they are plus one (of scratch perverts) and beni g. these guys are heavy on the uk scene and have recently done remix work for lady sov, white williams, ac slater, does it offend you yeah?, caspa, black ghosts and much more. they turn in an epic remix that switches from rough mid tempo drums and baltimore hey grunts, to one of the craziest electro wobble things we ve ever heard. seriously. crowds have been eating this thing up and with support from djs like craze, a-trak, kissy sellout, drop the lime and boyz noize this is bound to be a big tune for summer. of course you also get the original line up with the diplo produced >get off<, the awesome bonus beats, and the rob3 remix.

after excellent results with the first three releases, it is label manager dia who comes out with the next release on vinyl did it. roaches travel in groups is an ep complete with the right amount of house and techno elements, never leaning too close to one style yet retaining a familiarity and elements from each genre to make it appealing to just about any music lover. on the a side, left there kicks off the record with vintage-like house pads and piano. the second track on the a side, winds of tomorrow takes things into techno territory with classic 909 claps, prominent hi hats, and filtered synths, upbeat,fun, and more of a peak time track. on the b side, dia shows us a sound that she dominates and clearly has defined her previous eps, leaning towards the often called >afterhours techno<, with a strong, deep, hypnotic track, scrape. made up of small sounds and carefully placed percussive elements that carry the track nicely, all this topped by a contagious voice that seems to invite us into a parallel universe where the only thing that matters is the music. limited edition of 500 units!

fritto morto 003 sees gatto frittos invisible college getting a timely re release. originally out on dissident, invisible college has been a big record for beardos from hoxton to hawaii. it became a firm favourite at londons disco bloodbath and cosmic truth nights aswell as across the pond at harveys sarcastic parties. a long acoustic guitar driven balearic trip propelled by synth bass, disco toms, clavinet and fender rhodes with a summery disposition. the b side your dreams are my nightmares is 9 minutes of highlife guitars squalling 101s, backwards vocals and white noise snares with a pure pop number buried underneath...the sort of thing paul simon and doris norton might have made if they had been sectioned and were in a music therapy group together.

the third 12 inch in this essential edit series sees greg wilson reference his past as a disco dj in the late 70s and, subsequently, electro-funk pioneer of the early 80s. going way back to his golden guinea days, ruff wrap revitalizes a hidden gem from 1977 by lady love. this version of casey & finchs infectious miami groover, wrap your arms around me, was a record that, although never issued in the uk, was a particular club favourite on merseyside - its local popularity very much down to one of wilsons influences, terry lennaine, who championed the track on his weekly specialist soul show, keep on truckin. moving on 6 years to 1983, ruff rapp re-arranges the seminal west coast rap cut bad times (i cant stand it) by captain rapp, which was a monster tune on the black scene during the electro-funk era, having initially featured at wilsons club nights back then, legend and the hacienda in manchester, plus wigan pier. focusing on the social problems of the time, the subject matter of the lyric certainly translates to the current credit crunch climate. the crew behind >bad times< included jam & lewis and rich cason, whilst kimberly balls excellent vocal sets the whole thing off

tensnake has been hamburgs best-kept secret. has been! past 12inchs for labels like radius, mirau (which he co-runs) or his gorgeous >keep believin< three-tracker for endless flight speak louder than words. on top he delivered all these nice remixes for the likes of junior boys ( fm÷ is theee one), sally shapiro or more recently toby tobias on rekids. firmly rooted in new yorks sweaty boogie dreams and with a soft spot for dazzling house music, >in the end< stays true to tensnakes juicy techniques and pleases our friends and colleagues (radio slave, robet dietz, prins thomas, gilbr, mark e) alike. we start off with a courageous house tune that has all the qualities of an a-side and concisely defines the dilemma of lovers: in the end someone always has to cry. but as long as it sounds like a cutty ranks rocket launcher, we want test it. the other side of the medal features >holding back my love< a slow-motion disco robot bomb with a crooning tensnake on the mic that makes everyone feel happy like they should. finally, >thethenunknown< somehow melts the moodiness of early factory records (think a certain ratio with a little finger exercise) with the atmosphere of kenneth dixon jr.s >misled< - one for the heart, soul and your headphones. at least, gerd feels and thinks like that. speaking of feelings. if downloads are your thing, you can get the digital bonus track >can you feel it< at all the usual spots. how is that for a change? this guy aint a blindschleiche

(the deep theory ep). the wait is over and the duo of damon lamar and specter have returned. this ep is picking up right where they have left off. deeply rooted in the underwater sound that have made the releases on tetrode must haves by heads around the world. side a is produced by specter and he drops his signature beatdown sound. >bazerko< is a stripped down minimal heater that builds up with 707 drums, sub bass and a hammond organ riff that really bring this track together. >nighthawk< is a beautiful laid out sunrise track. smooth drums, warm pads, and bubbly appregiated synths. inspiration drawn from larry heard and the deep techno sound of the 90Æs. side b is produced by damon lamar. >large crowd< is this beating track pulled and resurrected from the vault. heavy percussion loop, dirty bass, deep chords and a haunting vocal that must be heard to understand the meaning. >put it on ice< is a laid back downtempo track that shows the versatility of damon lamar. lush strings, dubby bass and melodic keys make it a track that just grooves and soothes the ear. tetrode music has returned with this solid offering and one thing for sure is the sound hasnÆt changed ... just more refined.

the debut 12inch from finnish duo hannulelauri! first up is glittering night, conjuring visions of 8 bit videogame soundtracks applied to the dancefloor, or an alternative theme to the movie robocop (which lauri seems to have a strong affinity for), with shimmering electric synth chords washing over a commodore 64 groove before a peter hook soundalike drops a lovely bassline, making new order comparisons inevitable (a good thing!). perfect late night machine funk. next is sally 2000, a more introspective piece with insistent digital strings providing the foundation for a childlike toy chime melody, pulsating bass and more as layer upon layer builds to a fuzzed out, pixelated yet beatless climax. finally, the late night vibe continues as sally 2000 gets a version from finlands techno/house master jori hulkkonen who works the tracks pleading strings into a more dancefloor friendly mix, adding perfectly tuned drums and a nice, fat kick but keeping the synth melodies intact and the tempo slower than your normal electrohouse jam. adventurous djs looking for alternative moods need look no further! another strong flexx release.

maybe there is no such thing as an autobiographic song in electronic dance music but valentino kanzyanis 33 certainly comes as close as it gets. marking the artists 33rd birthday in 2008 – the christs years as one would say in his home country of slovenia – the record was intended as a symbolic milestone in his highly successive career. as an artist who loves being surrounded by a crowd in professional as well as in personal life kanzyani soon began organizing huge birthday parties where he performed together with his friends. the sets were readily released on promo records, which received a lot of attention. finally, kanzyani & tomy declerque took it a step further by canalising the motivating atmosphere of their summer performance into a full-fledged studio release.

as costello continues to look long, the grooves continue to flow. lng3 sees the reissue of the deep house classic pleite which originally appeared on trapez in 2003. recorded in dublin in 2002, this version has been mastered at dubplates and mastering, berlin in 2009. the results are stunning and serve as a welcome reminder of costelloÆs deep roots. pleite (costello dub) in particular could teach some of todayÆs hyperactive producers a thing or two about setting up a solid groove and letting it sit. the timing of this reissue could not be more perfect with regard to the current musical zeitgeist. the title, a german colloquialism for broke or indeed bankrupt which was an in-joke at the time of the original release, takes on a new significance in the context of global economic recession.

here comes the third and final part of afu artists remixing afu artists and it s a very nice round up to the first remix series on afu limited! butch s great second release on afu limited gets a very high class remix treatment by none other than thomas p. heckmann himself and the man who likes to whop, gabriel ananda!! heckmann reworked butch s dancefloor killer of 2009 dark fader and pushed the level more than a bit higher with it s deep driving bassline and the ever growing tension and building of the vibe! sure thing this will be heard at peak time at outdoor and indoor parties this summer! ananda chose the excellent nomad track and delivered a very atmospheric and groovy/dubby version, peppered by his own unique style of rhythm and driving force! the man behind such classics as miracle whop, doppelwhipper on platzhirsch and many others surely knows how to bring his skills to life and to make this remix a sure classic again!
