carl gari is a group of three from munich: jonas yamer, till funke and jonas friedlich. they released their well received and idiosyncratic debut (npr mentioned it as one of the 50 best albums in 2016) on the trilogy tapes, for which they collaborated with egyptian singer and spoken word artist abdullah miniawy. for the second release on permanent vacation they perfected their unique blend of psychedelic ingredients, dubbed out drums, drony sounds and a general hazyness. the mystic chants of abdullah, who is also featured on two tracks, weave themselves into the bands lively sound texture. apart from that carl gari showcase the diversity of their analogue driven and melodic approach to electronic music through four beautifully detailed tracks.

‘clu5t3r’ opens the ep with a swinging 132bpm rhythm that sits somewhere in between classic uk-funky and a cracking shed/heads high techno anthem. the repeating riff that circles and cycles, sweeps through the frequency spectrum, energising and purposeful. versatile and effective, this is a track to come back to time and time again.
flip the plate and there’s another couple of gems. ‘v3r5u5’ continues on from where ‘clu5t3r’ left off, progressing the mood into a more ethereal space, building layers of pads and texture as the track developes, rising and ramping up, before pulling back and dropping into a rolling rhythm. closing up the ep is ‘h4ndcuff3d’, which takes the mood into a more dramatic backdrop. chilling pads swell up from the ground like mist in a graveyard, while the broken rhythm sets pace, creating a moody ambiance for those moments when you want to take a dancefloor into mystical, other-worldly territories. dramatic and energising!

silent servant provides an always dark, always monotonous, always semi industrial and stripped down rework of color, a wonderful mixing tool. while kanding ray ads floating pads and flanging sequences taking the original form to cosmic new age territories. cassegrain focuses on the beat content of texture, making an almost strictly percussive workout aimed straight to the dancefloor.

ansome returns to perc trax for his first original release since his debut album “stowaway” was released on the label in april 2016. since then he has extensively toured europe and north and south america with his ever changing modular live set as well as further establishing his south london analogue material imprint with a run of uncompromising releases.
despite decamping to berlin last year “british steel” shows there is still a no nonsense uk grittiness to ansome’s music. the frenetic rhythms reflect the pressure and paranoia of london life and for the first time his music incorporates vocals, thanks to the voice of occasional live collaborator oliver kohlenberg.
the four tracks take in everything from broken grooves to straight up dance floor face melters with a perfect balance of rhythm and texture. “poison your body” has been a highlight of perc’s recent dj sets for months now, whilst “marching powder” was featured on rebekah’s debut essential mix for bbc radio.

dark entries is proud to present the deluxe 2xlp reissue of ‘come visit the big bigot’ by severed heads, oone of the longest surviving bands to emerge from the australian post-punk independent music scene. they began in sydney in 1979, incorporating elements of ‘industrial’ noise-generation, tape cutting & looping and electronic sound synthesis. as the project developed song-structures and vocals were employed in a more-or-less recognizable mutant electro pop style. after many line-up changes featuring garry bradbury and psychedelic guitarist simon knuckey, severed heads was the vehicle for composer tom ellard. ‘come visit the big bigot’ was severed heads’ first record to be released commercially simultaneously in australia, north america and europe in 1986. it was a prime period for this industrial dance music and bigot was a respected album that did well from the tour they did with skinny puppy that same year. quite a few people still define the band by this period. ‘come visit the big bigot’ was made on a fostex 16 track recorder in tom’s bedroom, employing the newly acquired akai s612 sampler and roland sh-101 to create most of the drum sounds. the album signaled a new direction, flirting with the dance floor and the pop song. presenting the heads at their most cohesive, while retaining their distinctive musical stamp. tom’s vocals are harmonized, slowed down, sped up, run through fuzz boxes, backwards, drum machine rolls, sampled guitars, horn sections, and voices but with a subversive rather than malevolent intention. tape loops are more subtle and define their own space and texture. like the original australian version of the album, we’ve included a bonus disc featuring three extended remixes by sydney dj robert racic (who produced the edited 7” version of “petrol” we reissued in 2015), plus three b-sides from the ‘twenty deadly diseases’12” and two additional tracks from the same recording sessions.

first ep of the label lowlife cartel. dissociative tones, texture of the sound and atmosphere sought here, more than melody. no boundary in genre but same sonic ethos. the two sides of the ep includes two tracks ambient/downtempo fitting with patient listening. three other, lofi tracks, and more efficient to play into clubs. face a starts with -nerve splicing- by telekommunist, also known as wpx7, face covered and steps muffled through a deadening blizzard of tape saturation and white noisey envelops that find a balance between deepening the sense of immersion and a retained groove. -kairu- by a. latif, affiliated to the experimental and elusive russian label john s kingdom. an arsenal of textures are employed, surrounded all the time by different kind of breeths carving out a growingly satisfying contrast between the shivery charm of its melodic line and the roughness of its elements. a rough diamond. face b, -kfs-, by vslds (present on the next cousin carl release, after kinway and voyd) is a delusional and abstract piece of lofi hip hop. setting skittish drums and heavily altered rapper vox sample, smothered against a grey-ish canvas of blurry, washed-out pads. this feels both playful and unhealthy. -gotta go fast-, by paul santangelo (venetian causeway), is marked with the very personal style of this artist who does his way across the ever effervescent lofi techno scene. the round, drag-shed bass, fits with an introspective melody and atmosphere. -every man has a woman who loves him-, by loophie (raw russians), surprises the listener at the end of the disc with a lofi house track sampled from john lennon, very effective in club. the czech lofi house videomaker moskalus edited a video of it on his youtube channel. 5 artists to follow.

berlin-based producer, yapacc take on the original sees him transferring the song into a dancefloor-ready track whilst subtly maintaining the ambience of the original. off-beat house-esque sub-rhythms and a melodic bassline helps to keep the energy of the track moving forward, whilst the top end guitars and vocals keep the listener interest up until the very last second. russian-based dave pads remix also helps the original move onto the dancefloor with this incredibly funky, groovy-laiden back beat which simultaneously manages to hold onto the original tracks esthetical ambience. euphoric house stabs and a continuous layered texture sits behind the tracks groove, adding a sense of nostalgia and depth to an already emotive original.

this is the first release of inversions, a label run by milo smee and thomas franklin. it s an offshoot of milo s power vacuum label. this first record is a various artists ep indicating the intended direction and scope of the label, featuring tracks from cavern of anti-matter, booze, fupper, clean & jerk and apotheose de la trahison. the record, and record label in connection with the first release, was featured in articles in dummy, thump, and ransom note blogs/magazines. the record received positive reviews by resident advisor, terminal 313, kiltr and beach sloth. milo and thomas were invited to play a guest mix on the baba yaga s hut podcast on london s resonance fm. tracks also played on audio texture radio show, independent music podcast and the zone.

time for a little neck bulging, slimy skin hip-slinking summer fun as a true craftsman steps from the studio shadows: jay shepheard, who’s back with a track that’s so infectious if you licked its back you’d trip for weeks. prepare yourselves for ‘bullfrogging’: wry funk, warmth and humanised technoid soul. taking a vocal texture then processing, harmonising and splicing the spawn out of it, jay’s precision balance of electronic hustle and anthromorphised action has all the hallmarks for a summer anthem. ‘early doors’ follows suit and there’s a massive clue in the title… soft-focused, warm, rolling and laced with textured chimes, it’s definitely tailored for those key transitions between warm-up and second gear. deep, trippy but coded with a hookiness that grabs rather than soothes, once again it’s classic shepheard but with a revitalised 2017 twist. hey, he didn’t lock himself away in the studio for twelve months for nothing, right? neither did jay’s long-time friend and neighbour mark henning, a man who hasn’t taken on a remix since the early 2010s. his return to the remix game is as poignant and powerful as jay’s return to releases as he removes around 70 percent of the frog and maximises the bullishness of the elements, creating a relentless tribal slammer of a version that still retains the warmth and soul of jay’s original. two returns to action, three killer tracks, one label you can always count on as your friend and no frogs harmed during the whole process. we’re pulling out some serious stops here.

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

described as the start of something special by simon shreeve / mønic and full of depth and texture by kamikaze space programme, other forms debut ep unmarked paths lands on the artists unknown movements label on 12th may. the ep’s five tracks all began life as jams on analogue hardware, and there’s a fat, noisy, intentionally-imperfect feel to each. amidst the floor-conscious urgency of the two sides opening pieces, the other three explore slower, darker territory and all are glued together by a foreboding atmosphere rich in sepulchral reverb and analogue hiss. killawatt calls it wonderfully fluid techno.

with additional successes under such labels as taub, latence releases once again on play label records for his fresh superheated ep. collaborating ideas from his teen years in belgium through the 90’s, with more progressive inspirations, latence has materialized a unique style, which is a celebration of timeless dance music and it’s continued influences on forward-thinking artists. kicking things off with his title-track, pablo flaunts a subtle build of off beat chords injected around playful and erratic acid house influences. a busy and varied concoction of sounds topped with provocative whispers. deeper amplitude is the second of this four track ep, and as the name suggests, we are provided with ample bass, accompanied by snippets of melodic discord and a boisterous snare, fearless and rhythmic. metastable lays a minimalist percussive foundation, sporting a retro 70s synth that steals focus with its quirky pitch shifts, a classic example of latence’s immense talent for blending influences across eras. latence closes with acido basic, an eccentric finale to this eclectic ep. using exotic vocal sampling centered around chemical compounds, he simplifies his percussive layers to a clean texture, which form the bedrock for his experimentations.

for his third ecm release as a leader, chris potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. the group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ecm’s many recordings from new york over the past decade: keyboardist david virelles, bassist joe martin and drummer marcus gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. the dreamer is the dream features potter on tenor saxophone – the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation – in the striking opener “heart in hand” and such album highlights as “yasodhara,” as well as on soprano sax (“memory and desire”) and bass clarinet (the title track). potter is an artist who “employs his considerable technique in service of music rather than spectacle,” says the new yorker, and his composing develops in texture and atmosphere with every album. along with his previous ecm releases, imaginary cities and the sirens, he has appeared on some of the label’s most acclaimed discs, including paul motian’s classic lost in a dream and dave holland’s grammy award-winning what goes around.

following on from his recent well-received 12 on cin cin and previous releases on respected labels such as hivern and permanent vacation. we are excited to present this three track 12inch anya s piano the first taste of the forthcoming debut lp from new jackson from night to night. the title track is a slow building double bass led boogie house groover with saxophonist terry edwards pj harvey/gallon drunk adding more depth to its layered, rich melodic texture. the flipside features two non lp tracks - the ghostly rave sound of in my room with the new jackson signature sound of dusty boogie synths and vocoder of leave me making closing out the 12 inch. beautiful cover photo by richard gilligan, all put together as ever by practice and theory.

sounds benefit returns with its third installment, and welcomes for their first vinyl ep the french duo indeëd, based in bordeaux. tib z and wimd, who make the team, delivered two powerful weapons, with an additionnal remix from one of our favorite artist - the greekest xdb. things starts on the a side with asylüm, a super strong and driving jam processed into old tape recorder, which gives to the atmosphere an unique texture and unsuspected energy. xdb s reinterpretation begins much smoother than the original track, but quickly the trademark style of metrolux s boss takes over, and brings the heat with his typical military groove. on the flip, stellär takes the listener on a different journey, warm and intense at the same time. thanks to driving rhythm sections and rolling sub bass, this classy track completes perfectly the package, for a solid winter record.

the europe-centered techno scene might be thinking: where is techno in a city as vast, dynamic and electric as new york? it s alive and well, and keeps growing through aptly-named new york trax. founded in 2016 and based in brooklyn, new york trax is an outlet for new york music, by new york artists, in new york city. the artist behind the fourth new york trax release needs no introduction. steve stoll is one of the pioneers and founding fathers of new york techno. producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno (even though his career began as a drummer with the industrial label wax trax), steve stoll has recorded for his own label proper nyc, trax records, djax, nova mute and many more, including his recent appearances on nina kraviz s imprint trip. this record on new york trax is the essence of steve stoll s style: minimal, driving, with a subtle groove that sinks in the rich texture of sound. it connects the dots between the past, present, and the future of the new york sound.

this new edition on the everlasting tresor records catalogue marks the return of pacou, more than five years after the release of his last full ep, sense. three recently produced tracks in the true sound that defines the work of the german techno expert, meet a remix of ‘a texture’. initially released on his 1998 symbolic language album, ‘a texture’ is a distinctive interlude, so supreme that it remains a tresor favorite.

bartellow has long been associated with the esp institute though tambien, a trio formed alongside bavarian cohorts marvin and valentino, who have released seminal dancefloor material over recent years. with his debut album panokorama, we are invited into a completely different world of bartellow s creation a place where influences become a melting pot of mood, nuance and texture, and where instrumentation is abstracted from a variety of cultures, including those that exist solely within his imagination. bartellow has found a way to merge primitivism with retrofuturism, identifying their point of intersection and reveling in their union across ten songs. while his academic background as a jazz musician certainly informs both his progressive approach to composition and non-linear production, it is his obsession with electronics and synthesis that shape his current musical climate. the title panokorama stems from bartellows visualization of the album, a surreal landscape with a foreign presence centrally embedded, a panorama punctuated by a ko, although a hybrid word that reads as nonsense, it somehow feels and sounds just right.

after the success of the broad and powerful second lp alone in time?, Ø phase continues his ongoing connection to token with the submerged metropolitan ep. the title track enters with burchett s own brand of unease, the lead is tense and discordant, moving over a bumpy, rolling kick. brushing off-beat hats rush overhead and play delicately with this unease above the thunder. a vague spoken word sample adds texture and contributes to the cerebral edge. ethereal swells and intense rhythmic play introduce fallen columns, which delves into atonality with keys that add a controlled recklessness to the composition. this absent mind takes on a hypnotic, dubby form with a confidence that belies its complexity. a sublime breakdown introduces the heavier second half of the track, which enters impressively and batters on to the end.

after an ep on creme organization off-shoot jericho one as dj plant texture, dona basile now assumes his dona alias for a new ep on the main label. entitled the v.g.p sessions, it features four new cuts from the italian, with three of them being dj pt mixes. up first is a live cut version of energia , a bristling electro track with globular bass and coarse hits. turbulent but full of synth based serenity, it is a fine start. cigarettes (djpt mix) is rugged and broken, with glossy idm synths and corrugated drums all loosely arranged into something prickly and unsettling. the deads at twelve (djpt mix) then gets even more fucked up, with rusty synths and blown out drums making for a dystopian house groove that will likely soundtrack the apocalypse. last but not least, nr. 13 (djpt mix) mixes up detroit synths, wild acid, heavenly chords and chopped up, buried deep vocal samples into something that will fire every synapse in your body. this is outlier stuff from dona that sounds like little else.

in the fourth modern cathedrals release, altstadt echo crafts three original works with a focus on experimentation with broken beat structures and grainy percussive texture, against a backdrop of austere atmospheres. varg contributes a remix that emphasizes the despairing tones of the descent, contrasted with glistening treble percussion and and stumbling bass. to end the release, evigt mörker offers an extended hypnotic version of the track that slowly develops from a functional framework into an atmospheric drift. the thematic aspects of the release follow the development of modern cathedrals as a label, expressing existentialist themes centered around the search for meaning in a life that forbids it. the label art features photographs of the beautiful remains of one of detroits many unused churches

mentha records calls on the services of hakim murphy to rock a record titled ambidextrous to amphibious. the four track 12 inch illustrates murphys ability to create different styles, tempos, and textures. the a side begins with sickness, which displays a sparkling synth line that grooves from beginning to end. a2 is a beatdown tune called spaceness is filled to the brim with texture and harmonic goodness. an acid house banger called merge starts the flip side that features a bubble acid line and moving percussion. panty hose silences ends the record with its jazzy influenced tones and flowing arp lines. a release that is good for home, club, and warehouse use.

incoming! adult only 46 is here and it’s another biggie. chris carrier’s trusty label always delivers the funk and this release is no exception. featuring rhythm&soul plus russian newcomers belogurov and orbit and the bossman carrier himself, it’s comprised four tracks, all with their own unique groove and atmosphere – perfect for anyone who loves deep rhythmic house music with hypnotic sensibilities. rhythm&soul takes one side of the record, the first of his tracks ‘take off’ comes in with sturdy beats pushes things along at a steady pace. his use of ‘live’ sounding percussion is evident throughout, working perfectly alongside a captivating double bass keeping things moving. if you manage to stay still while this is playing then there’s something wrong with you, utterly irresistible. the second track from the madrid-based producer is another upbeat joint. the deep bassline bounces up and down while razor sharp hats slice and dice their way through the lower end. as with most of rhythm&soul’s work, there are lots of nuances and details peppering the track, keeping it interesting from start to finish. on the flip side we have the russian boys belogurov and orbit, who deliver eight minutes of pleasure with ‘jysk’. smooth cosmic grooves rise up off this steaming hot, sensual cut. a naughty allure emanates from this track as it moves forward, subtle pads swirling in the background to suck you in and keep you locked to the groove. and to round things off, chris carrier delivers a typically eccentric roll out. subtle beats are placed over an analogue low end together with a selection of strange sounds direct from carrier’s well-equipped lab. variations in the rhythm and texture keep this one interesting all the way until the end.and there it is, another hot one from the adult only camp… strictly for over 18s!

vanta series is the new series for killekill’s dancefloor music. the releases come in series, every series comes with a theme and one artwork which is being split in several parts to go with each release. the first series is called “the end is near” and features four records. it comes with an artwork by french visual artist elzo durt. vanta 003 comes from eomac under his alias eeoo. eeoo is a side project for what is, in eomac’s mind, straight up, techno-rave-house-jungle- disco influenced, dancefloor material. it draws influence from classic styles of dance music. less dense, less conceptual than the eomac-music. less focussed on texture and atmosphere, a more direct approach for sweaty ravers and moving bodies.
