returning with renewed force after henning baer’s unbreakable debut lp, manhigh’s sixth release comes from a name already well-known in techno circles. sciahri is the italian producer whose luminous 2014 debut on the celebrated ilian tape’s itx experimental series immediately announced his presence, followed by another on the label and two eps for the highly-rated black opal offshoot of opal tapes by 2016. he was simultaneously occupied with his ambient-leaning unknot duo with emanuele porcinai, better known as wsr on samuel kerridge’s contort label. 2017 saw the launch of his sublunar imprint and a tripartite release from him featuring a more streamlined sound than the craggy broken-beat style familiar from ilian tape. sciahri’s manhigh ep opens with ‘demur’, showcasing his most dour, industrial sounds, scraping metallic highs against the unrelenting impacts of reverberating kicks and subbass drone. ‘forbidden’ holds its forces more in reserve, the cycling, mechanical soundscape maintaining a spacious, ambient aspect, worked against a broken rhythm more implied than explicitly stated. returning to full intensity for ‘reliance’, he tightly coils the core elements around deftly-deployed percussion and a militaristic, pounding rhythm in the bass and kicks. henning baer’s reinterpretation of ‘demur’ saves little from the original apart from its overriding tension, instead adding a layer of nearly-tonal pads and an unremitting acidic bass throb pushing forwards inexorably.

d edges cultured off shoot olga is back with a new ep, radiolarian, from german-bulgarian stefan goldmann. again it is a perfectly well sculpted ep with deep and sleek lines that get right into your head. the man behind it is the co-owner of the excellent macro label and for more than fifteen years has released intricate house and techno sounds. he is a deep thinker and master of hi-fidelity sound design and intricate grooves, so is perfect for this label. radiolarian is first and is seven sublime minutes of tunnelling techno rippled with neon melodies and firefly like pads that burrow into your brain. it is a high tempo and high impact track but a subtle one that works its magic slowly. building to a number of peaks, it then pulls back and the whole thing starts again. on the flip, streams is freaky and unhinged, with weird synth sounds making for a trippy atmospheres as minimal beats roll below. perfectly detailed so as to work on both head as well as heel, it rounds out another fine ep.

b side starts off with “calypso”, one of the earliest x-coast productions - a steady house groove made from layers of keys, trumpet stabs, rich with hats and ghost snares - perfect to get the party started. being the last track, “don’t stop” is a hidden gem of this ep - what seems to be a hawaiian steel guitar classic, quickly transforms into a floor stomper, it’s a house beat reinforced by a classic rolling break, hammond stabs and samples of sterling void & paris brightledge’s “it’s all right”.

* kowton makes an emphatic return to livity sound this autumn with his first solo 12” for the label since 2012. * a foundation block of the label, kowton has also released on hessle audio, all caps and idle hands and most recently scored a hit with his ubiquitous -glock & roll- on young turks offshoot whities. his music s been remixed by karenn, kassem mosse and surgeon and in turn he s remixed work by paul woolford, tessela and untold. * now a regular some of the finest clubs around, kowton has played across europe both live with livity sound (alongside peverelist and asusu) and as a solo dj. in the past 12 months he s toured japan, america, australia and is set for repeat visits this autumn. * this new livity sound 12- see s kowton in a typically reductive mode: on repeat layers pulsing subs with weighty percussion and enveloping synths, holding patterns flips things into a streamlined modulating techno workout of abrasive drums and rotating rim shots.

june 2015 sees the release of tubs n tongue-fu (son07lp) debut album by london three piece official burnt toast. adrian lawrence (mc / drums) patrick luke (production / bass) & abrar hafiz (bass) bring out their music on limited edition vinyl. delivering a lethal stream of conscious poetry over homegrown beats and boasting two live bass players, uk based, canadian mc - obt effortlessly meld elements of lo-fi hip hop, post punk and jazz. the album has many highlights and stand out tracks hitting a range of subjects and moods including the political *whats in a word* and *money as debt* (a damning depiction of our debt based economy) as well as the poetic and personal such as *425* and *titles on g street* (composed solely from old blue note titles).

the third release on palms & charms comes from tokyo club stalwart masanori ikeda (mansfield, ikeda x), who has had previous releases on the legendary flower records and cos/mes imprint snaker. a resident dj at london club wag in the early 90 s, masanori returned to japan later in the decade and has since provided the soundtrack to many a tokyo night-time adventure, most recently with his continuing residency at shibuya institution oath. with afro tipsy, masanori offers up a monster of rolling percussion and pulsating synths. feel the stress of the day fall away, your veins flowing as if with the very energy of a thousand suns. moving confidently to the dance floor, your head and limbs begin to move in new and unexpected rhythms. don t be alarmed - you feel good. on the flipside, the remix from almunia (claremont 56) takes you deeper than deep. the sound envelops you as you enter the club. the continental winds and low pressure lift you aloft and you circulate around the dance floor, carried far as if on a warm jet stream. the rhythm drives, dubbed-out guitar echoing through the night. leonardo ceccanti and gianluca salvadori taking you to new places.

release no.4 for the mysterious dense & pika. >who cares wins< is another slice of grimey warehouse rawness, the kinetic drums and synths combing for a peak time cacophony of sound. flipsides >morse mode< ups the tempo whilst still keeping the duos signature rough vibe whilst >crackling< rounds things off nicely, more streamlined than the previous tracks with a touch of dub techno thrown in for good measure.

label boss sasha carassi showcases his constant evolution in this three-track ep and soundsphere kicks things off with unmistakeable, mutating stabs intertwined with haunting background synths. starchild picks up from there with its rubber-band bassline and streamlined electronics, and introduces what can only be described as mutant sci-fi chords. for the closer, mr. carassi has put together the aptly-titled drop of soul in which trademarked synths pave the way for nostalgic arpeggios and dissonant electronics.

in contrast to his *heart* release, scrases *another* ep provides a dark and twisted journey down more alien avenues - the streaming melodies & warm atmospheres of the previous ep supplanted by arcane wooden rhythms and mechanised bass movements. *another* delivers a slab of crawling, warehouse-weight with an eastern flavour, *movon* provides a minimal take on uk bass music fine-tuned to devastating effect. the three percussive tracks littered throughout the release explore a very different angle, combining dusty wooden rhythms with dread-filled tones and complex manipulations, lending the diverse collection of tracks a strong ritualistic feeling, topped off with a brooding remix of the title track by the ever consistent irish techno duo lakker.

gene hunt is a prolific producer with an un-mistakable sound of his own. and although an originator of the acid house sound from chicago, he certainly didnt stop there. his music has naturally evolved over the years, often incorporating more mature melody and rhythm structures, but always in time with a proper underground style dance track. these tracks are a perfect fit for the direction and vision of the inner shift music label as well, and for this reason we are pleased to present you with planted seeds by gene hunt.
