a much in demand reissue of two of nyc born-and-bred, pal joeys, classics from his joint label with reynald deschamps, loop dloop. first up, party time which harnesses that 90s nyc underground house energy with a rawness that was to emanate through many of pal joeys subsequent productions. scalpel in hand, joey expertly crafted this sample laden groover, his trademark stuttering, off-kilter rhythms, loops and fills keeping listeners on their toes throughout, never knowing how the next phrase might unfold. on the flip, raw love utilises a seminal disco classic as its main sample source, looping it in a way only pal joeys mind knows how, adding percussive hits and extra effects to create an innovative, animated and exhilaratingly rhythmic dancefloor bomb. both tracks are perfect examples of the simplicity and seeming effortlessness that pal joey maintains in his productions, adhering to the mantra that less is more but with a resonating rawness that touches deep down in the soul.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

born in the high north of germany and now a berlin resident, ralf schmidt aka aera first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own aleph music label back in 2010. with only a handful of releases, aera was able to lay out his very own musically topography on the cutting edges between house, psychedelia and breakbeats. this colourful mix culminated on his debut album „offseason traveller” in 2013, resonating the past forty years of electronic music, which brought him the attention of a wider audience as well as fellow djs and producers. so it was a logical consequence that his talent also attracted other labels and lead to widely praised releases on innervisions, maeve or john talabot’s hivern discs. with these, aera’s sound bloomed further into bubbly acid and trancey territorries and his fine reputation as a singular producer, travelling dj and remixer flourished. with „the sound path” aera continues his musical travels and permanent vacation is gladly hitchhiking on that ride. his second album is the most coherent and definitely most personal work to date. here, he has perfected his sound even further - adding nuances from the meadows of new age, kraut cliffs and high-flying kites of ambient. complete with the cinematic and nature-esque qualities of ralf’s music, it will draw you in deeply through a great variety of landscapes before your inner eye. however, you’ll never lose track, because this path is beautifully illuminated.

the fourth installment in john osborns dred records series will be from fellow uk producer harsh puri who goes under the moniker reformed society. dred 004 consists of six tracks in total three that will appear on the vinyl release, followed by another three that will be digital-only exclusives. harsh puri aka reformed society debuted in 2015 with this being his sixth consecutive release in order. harshs productions caught johns eye, or rather ear, after being sent to him last year and resulted in this release of six solid prime time deep house stompers. packaged in an understated matte white sleeve with a black and white picture of brahma (the four headed hindu god of creation) handstamped on each cover by the label owner himself, this being a continuation of the human skull dred logo. one life opens the dimensions ep and is the track given to label boss john osborn for deconstructing and remoulding into his own specific vision each release will contain a rework from osborn. if you are familiar with johns previous work you will immediately recognize his characteristic resonating percussion, the tune being a deep house sci-fi storm expedition driven by a full luscious kick covering the tracks of chords from unsettled pads. the eps title track has ambient sonic rays flowing through it, being aptly named dimensions it is also the records warmest adventure, distorted percussion juggles sparse subaqueous melodic moments, and from here we go into the 12inches final moment, chasing titanoid. reformed society goes in with full yet silent force on this one. a warped bassline co-creates the groove with a particularly bouncy beat with sharp strings piercing though.

rekids celebrates 10 years of radio slave’s ‘grindhouse’ with remixes from len faki, slam, obscure shape & shdw, vatican shadow, markus suckut, lady starlight and special request. first appearing on a release as part of radio slave’s iconic ‘no sleep’ series, ‘grindhouse’ spawned multiple remixes from the likes of dubfire, danton eeprom, terrance fixmer and nic fanciulli to become one of the biggest techno records since its original release. to commemorate this fact, len faki has produced two different reinterpretations in the first of four heavyweight remix packages.
“i didn’t plan to go back to grindhouse. it’s a monster of a record and undoubtedly the biggest release we’ve had on the label, but after 10 years it seems right to revisit the track and also add some new versions from some of my favourite techno producers.- – radio slave with danton eeprom’s vocal resonating throughout, faki’s first remix features crunchy snares, ominous chords and shuffling effects before piercing synths come into effect in the latter half. meanwhile, the second version rumbles forward with its undulating bassline, soaring atmospherics and echoing elements to round up two solid productions exemplary of the figure founder’s seasoned abilities in the studio.

alter is the new album from belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer otto lindholm. divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, alter takes off from lindholms previous work a self-titled album released in 2015 on icarus records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. this new work is more brooding and hypnotic. a deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of greek, chamber-doom merchants mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody. the record moves at a funereal pace and opener fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. a bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. the ghostly beginnings of alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. closer, heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. a lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of the rachels or perhaps deaf center.

‘fallen down is the second ep from tee mango and will sauls primitive trust project, featuring a remix by shanti celeste. the title track weaves percussive shuffles and vocal refrains with glowing synths, whilst colourful melodic layers and resonating vocal stabs armour the choppy live drums of ‘day one. dekmantel regular shanti celeste does what she does best with her remix of fallen down in building a rich, hypnotic groove that steadily develops with intricacy and depth, whilst ‘big tracky disco tool is exactly that.

new york s p. leone is back with the second release on his newly launched e-missions imprint featuring work them records founder spencer parker on remix duties. born and raised in brooklyn, where he discovered the legendary storm rave parties run by frankie bones and adam x, p. leone cut his teeth djing in the lower east side of manhattan before making techno himself. before long the producer dropped his first two releases on work them records, joining a roster spanning radio slave, spencer parker, young male, anetha and physical therapy. e-missions was then launched in early 2017, acting as a platform for co-founders p. leone and caiazzo with more exciting artists soon to be announced. discipline signals is dark and robust from start to finish, with functions of discipline 1 inaugurating the package with resonating kicks, trippy elements and industrial synths. functions of discipline 2 follows a similar aesthetic but heads into a deeper direction with its cavernous atmospherics and glitch inspired effects, making way for laced with its sinister drones and tantalising melodies. spencer parker then remixes laced , concluding matters with rugged drums, energetic hi-hats and a rumbling low-end.

ivory puzzle – dj krust a straight up banger from dj krusts -cloaking- bass era. like many tracks from the time, it s working simplicity was it s defining factor. a very hooky arpeggiated intro and breakdown and an unrelenting drum and bass workout, the track steps up a gear getting more intense every sixteen bars taking the dance floor on the musical equivalent of a nitro fuelled sprint down a drag strip.
flip it – dj krust a futuristic roller with sampled funk breakbeats reminiscent of -true stories- and -soul in motion-. like many of the krust and full cycle releases this was a tune screaming to be mixed with others, it s unexpected drum edits and fx popping in and out making it impossible to tell when one tune ended and another began. the resonating b-line always sounded huge on a rig and paved the way for a myriad of future generations of bass ideas. quite a rare tune, only krust, die and bryan g had this on dubplate.

italian house bastion vibraphone records has more than proven itself in the realms of classic deep house, but this new release from knlb certainly speaks to the new age of the label. the unknown producer makes a stunning entry with -second wind-, an effervescent breakbeat number that harks back to classic 90s mo wax sounds with its resonating piano licks and gritty drum samples. -apollo- meanwhile creates an interesting variation on the dub techno template with a wealth of instrumentation cavorting around a tripped out chord stab, and then -initialize- drifts off into blissful deep house meditation atop a purposeful beat. minimono swoop in to inject some direct funk into their remix of -intialize-, and a very fine job they do of it too.

fresh from contributing to the voiceless series james clarke is back on analogical force with meteor ep, where he presents four new tracks. the classic shinra sound is in full effect: acid laced braindance, resonating electro and addictive melodies. lush and seamless production, as good in the sun as it is the depth of night. artwork comes by david o brien from impossing kittens, dublin.

elliot project 003 due out in late may 2017 moves towards a selection of interesting pieces with two originals by greek artist hemo. the first original, entitled ‘clouds’ is a moving electro journey with powerful pads and subtle basslines. ‘dogman’ turns a corner delivering a cosmic styled disco flight with catchy riffs and resonating bass leads. s. crosbie from the dark arts imprint also joins the project remixing ‘clouds’ into stripped back techno and frazer campbell closing off the release with an emotion fueled version of ‘dogman’.

ele returns with ha noi nights, a collection of dusty jazz samples and soulful grooves inspired by the distinct tapestry of street culture pulsating through the capital. the opening track rush recalls our affection of groove chronicles 90 s garage sound, before repelete and bini take centre stage with their infectious soulful summer beauty legislate . resonating with fans of james mason s bassline in the monster nightgruv , the b side welcomes rhythm sections contours and saxophonist callum connell who turn towards the later hours with night shift . finally, sameed returns to the dusty jazz formula with someone like me an infectious blissful sound, built around jazz samples and rhodes solos.

following a joint live performance in 2016, butter sessions present the latest collaborative effort from albrecht la brooy (analogue attic) & sleep d (butter sessions). this ep sees al & sd blend their respective styles in a stimulating way. from 50 begins the ep with steady 909 grooves and a subtle oscillating acid bass that builds into another dimension. hotham breaks the pace with atmospheric space leads looking down on a mountain of kick drums. banksia is the most psychedelic of the four, planting seeds of heavily resonating synths atop of floating drum rhythms and warm melodies. lastly, sleeping patterns takes it down a few notches into a daydream of flute-like synths and distant nostalgic vocals.

a bastion of magnetic style and mixing board finesse, honey dijon continues to exceed her bounds, pushing through from the underground of new york to become a cultural, global star. her classic follow-up to houze with seven david jnr, the provocative personal slave is unapologetic, hedonist and achingly cool. honey has teamed up with charles duff aka charles mccloud, who lends his seductively sulky tones for the vocal on the record. murky and mechanical, cowbell dinks and a percussive breakdown lift the mood, keeping the tracks feet firmly in the house bracket. consistently, honey’s productions piece together her familiar chicago jack with a contemporary new york edge. this track goes further in exploring that hybrid style, delivered with honeys signature lushness. a strong force in the us techno scene under his matrixxman moniker, charles duff appears again for remix duties on the dungeon dub, which as the name suggests is profoundly dark and moody, resonating highly with his regular slots at berghain. the drum machine mix hones in on the percussive work, playing with a visceral, hypnotic vibe that is so potent its almost dangerous. if this release is any indication of honeys intentions for this year, 2017 will see honey continue her ascension as a music icon.

disco inflections and happiness-driven chanting begins this release. off-placed rhythms call one to move. listening and dancing, is what needed. such need is further pursued in a2. listen. move. ‘which of the waltzes’ explores layering of sounds and is driven by shama joseph’s spontaneous vocal improvisation. while the rhythm swings, the vocals and piano maintain the warm harmonies. the final track is a broken rhythm expulsion. snippets of vocals and deeply resonating piano hints to what ‘which of the waltzes’ could have sounded if further experimentation in sonic reductionism would have taken place.
