brightons boutique house label black key recordskicks off 2017 with a fantastic ep from label newcomer cinthie. cinthie is a well established force in berlin: as well as being a resident at key spots ipse and humboldthain club-where she spins heady vinyl only sets-she runs three much loved labels and collectives in beste modus, unison wax and beste freunde. as such, she is a true leader of the underground house scene who also runs a studio complex in berlin, and so is very much at the heart of the house conversation. kicking things off is the excellent house rhythms , a rugged, bass driven, deep house cut with flabby drums and snares and icy hi hats all sounding informed by classic deep house greats like ron trent. warm, soul infused pads emanate from the core and the whole unhurried affair really sucks you in with its cosy and romantic atmosphere. the second splendid offering is liberty, a much rawerand direct cut designed for peak time sets. again it is riddled with jazzy chords that have real soul, but the drums are exposed and banging and the whole thing barrels along at a sweat inducing pace. this is a typically classy offering from both artist and label that kicks off 2017 in real style.

multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

dark sky stehen für weiterentwicklung. nie hat sich das londoner duo auf einen sound festgelegt oder in einer nische ausgeruht. was alle ihre gefeierten veröffentlichungen eint, ist eine leidenschaft für fast alle formen von elektronischer musik auch neben dem dancefloor und ein brillantes technisches handwerk. das bleibt auch auf -othona- so, dem zweiten album von dark sky für monkeytown records. auf neun tracks erfinden sich matt benyayer und tom edwards wieder ein bisschen neu und verknüpfen modernen techno, klassische electronica und ihre britischen bassmusik-wurzeln zu einem berührenden und absolut eigenwilligen ganzen.

manchmal ist eine rückbesinnung hilfreich um sich neu zu orientieren. im falle von booka shade ist ihnen dadurch vielleicht ihr stärkstes album ihrer gesammten karriere geglückt. wir sind sehr stolz auf all das, was wir mit unserer elektronischen clubmusik erreicht haben. mit movements 10 haben wir dann im letzten jahr dieses kapitel abgeschlossen. 2017 bedeutet für uns eine musikalische veränderung.(walter booka shade) ich mag die vermischung aller unserer einflüsse wirklich sehr 80er synth-pop, 90er manchester sound, bis hin zu aktuellen klängen von the weeknd und ähnlichen acts ist alles dabei und verbindet sich zu einem modernen und einnehmenden ganzen. wer mit deepen house und bassgetriebenen tracks die menge im club hochjagen will, wird an bar 64 nicht vorbeikommen. ein track mit ecken und kanten, voller überraschender effekte, die in takt 64 mit aller eindringlichkeit den nicht zu vermeidenden hands-up-effekt fordern. aufrüttelnd, die komplette aufmerksamkeit auf sich ziehend, mitreissend, eigen. ein unkonventioneller drop nimmt auf den zweiten schlag richtig fahrt auf. der rhythmus ohne durchgängigen open-hihat, aber mit groovigen percussions, untermalt von psychedelische orgeln, die die tragenden bässe jagen und so ziemlich jeden subwoofer an seine grenze bringen. die vocals an sich sind derart verfremdet, dass sie viel mehr an die hypnotisch treibende 303-linie erinnern. der mehrfach gelayerter sound, mit einer vielschichtigen soundstruktur sorgt dafür, dass -bar 64- sich immer wieder aufs neue in unsere köpfe brennt. die ep, die sich erfrischend neu von gängigen club-tracks unterscheidet, liefert drei erlesene remixe, aus der schmiede von ridney (cafe mambo ibiza), alain ho (yellow production) sowie dem newcomer samplicity, der mit -bar 64- sein eindrucksvolles debüt gibt. während der -ridney remix- im unverkennbaren sound als klassisches dj tool zu einer festen größe im underground avanciert, bettet der -samplecity dub remix- die psychedelische orgel in ein klassisches after-hour-club-tool aus dem dj-kreis der produzenten. altmeister alain ho steuert mit seinem mix eine etwas reduziertere version bei, die stilsicher elemente aus dem original mix zitiert und unaufdringlich in einem über acht minuten andauernden track münden - ein hauch cafe del mar inklusive.

cougouyou ist ein plattenladen in perpignan, südfrankreich, sowie ein sublabel von staubgold. auf diesem veröffentlicht markus dettmer limitierte 7’’es mit regionalbezug. gewöhnlich kommen südfranzösische bzw. katalonische bands mit exklusiven neuen stücken zum zug. -lettre À monsieur le chef de gare de la tour de carol- macht davon eine doppelte ausnahme, denn weder stammt die 1939 geborene avantgarde-musikerin, autorin und schauspielerin brigitte fontaine aus der region, noch ist ihr musique-concrète-stück neu. es erschien bereits 1969 auf dem album -comme À la radio- und collagiert verfremdete tonfetzen des bahnhofsvorstehers von latour-de-carol, einem auf 1200 meter höhe gelegenen Örtchens in den pyrenäen. die single wird durch zwei tracks des in perpignan ansässigen minimalkomponisten monsieurdurand ergänzt. seine beiden stücke -un mauvais champignon- und -la nausée (extrait)- stehen ebenfalls der musique concrète nahe und basieren auf field recordings.

vor nun mehr sieben jahren gaben sie uns das feuer der gaben, dann wurde es still. aber sie sind nicht komplett zu asche verbrannt. ein bisschen glut leuchtete still und heimlich im dunkel der vergangenheit vor sich hin, bis sich tobias siebert und seine band klez.e vor etwa einem jahr dazu entschlossen, das alte, ewige feuer neu zu entfachen. entstanden ist gleich ein ganzes album, das seine reise im jahr 1989 beginnt und seine hörer im hier und jetzt wieder ausspuckt. ein album, das seinen ausgangspunkt in eben jenem jahr nimmt, in dem nicht nur die mauer fiel und das sogenannte ende der geschichte ausgerufen wurde, sondern auch disintegration von the cure erschien. siebert, selbst im osten der republik groß geworden, und schon immer von westlicher new-wave und postpunk-beeinflusster popmusik begeistert, blickt in der echokammer der gegenwart zurück in die zeit der großen versprechen, die schon damals unerfüllt im hallraum der toms und den monotonen basslinen im disconebelnirvana verschwanden. versprechen auch einer befreiung, die in einem ideologiekritischen sinne vielleicht immer schon hohl waren, heute jedoch ferner scheinen denn je. folgerichtig nennen klez.e ihr viertes album desintegration, auflösung, zerfall. womöglich kein zufall.

while many us producers from the second house wave of the 90s are looked at like demigods, others have remained partly in the shadows, and considerably underrated given their achievements. anthony nicholson is one producer who belongs to the latter category, but one which we ve been supporting since day one of juno. the man came to prominence thanks to a fruitful relationship with ron trent, and also to a whole heap of quality releases for known imprints like peacefrog, prescription, and nite grooves. this week, however, he s up on his own highly underrated circular motion, spear-headed by the excellent -miquifaye studio rewerk-, a tribal house groove with a deep, wondrous backdrop of synth exploration. -beat pad apella- is a jazzier piece of music, an enticing house chiller with plenty of musical nuances that bounce off its full, intricate groove. excellent - don t overlook this one...

groove line records follows up the change remix 12” from the summer with the latest instalment of our officially licensed disco remix 12”s. next up are two exceptional disco remixes of the salsoul orchestra classics, “tale of three cities” and “tangerine”, by mike maurro, whose recent the mike maurro peak hour remixes box set has cemented the new york producer’s reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now. side a features “tale of three cities” (mike maurro disco remix), one of the salsoul orchestra’s funkiest cuts, written by bass player ron baker for their debut lp. maurro extends the arrangement to nine minutes, concentrating on the driving beat and rhythm section for the intro, subtly adding the guitar and keyboard parts before the first orchestral bridge at 1m36. stripping back much of the orchestral elements throughout the mix he gives more space to the deftly executed solo guitar and keyboard passages and gives special attention to vincent montana’s vibes, taking the dancer on a beautiful journey through the salsoul sound concluding with an instrumental, ethereal outro. side aa features “tangerine” (mike maurro disco remix), vincent montana’s skillfully rearranged version of the lilting jimmy dorsey pop standard which was the group’s biggest pop hit, also from their debut lp.

die beiden multitalentierten musiker johannes brecht (diynamic) und christian prommer (sonar kollektiv) veröffentlichen mit -voix grave- ein novum auf dem sonst eher dancefloor-orientierten hamburger vorzeigelabel. die kollaboration ist ein atmosphärisches klassik-werk mit drum-echoes, gezupften violinen und emotionalem cello, das jeder für sich nochmal neu im clubkontext interpretiert, und mit dem sich für diynamic neue kreative horizonte eröffnen.

das album -100%- war längere zeit nicht zu haben. weder auf cd noch digital. die songs sind neu gemastert. die songs sind dieselben, es gibt keine neuen songs oder sonstiges bonusmaterial, einzig beim sound wird man ein paar unterschiede feststellen. den remastering-prozess hat eike freese gemacht. eike freese hat in den letzten 15 jahren an mehr als 170 veröffentlichungen mitgewirkt, darunter auch an alben und dvds von deep purple, saga, apocalyptica, gamma ray, eisbrecher, oomph!, heaven shall burn, callejon, uvm. für seine arbeiten an deep purples -now what?!- the live tapes- und eisbrechers -die hölle muss warten- wurde eike freese mit jeweils einer goldenen schallplatte ausgezeichnet. außerdem wird er mitverantwortlich für das kommende album sein. aber dazu mehr zu seiner zeit. das gesamte artwork wurde überarbeitet. die band ist immer wieder ergriffen über das, was die fans zurückgeben. Über feedback, enthusiasmus und der liebe zu dieser musik. das zeigt sich an so vielen stellen. am offensichtlichsten und wohl auch am unumstößlichsten an den fan-tattoos, die der band gewidmet sind. und genau diesen tattoos, diesen bildern für die ewigkeit, dieser leidenschaft, möchte die band mit diesem release tribut zollen. so wie auf der haut, sollen die tattoos auch in der discographie dieser band auf ewig das sichtbare zeichen einer innigen verbundenheit sein. viele fans werden ihr tattoo also im artwork dieses albums wiederfinden. bunt auf weiß. für immer. zu 100 prozent - und jetzt als vinyl - in grün!
