loco dices desolat label welcomes uk artist waff for its next ep, a meaty four tracker by the name of hanzz sup. in recent times, waff has really established himself as one of the beacons of main room house and techno around the world. from standout sets at key ibiza clubs to gigs at fabric, london via big underground hits on labels like drumcode, cocoon and hot creations, he is a real man of the moment. the title track opens the ep in fine style with hulking great big kicks reverberating down low as wonky tones and scattered percussion add more heat. barreling along and taking no prisoners, it is a hugely physical drum track with spoken word mutterings piling on the pressure. making just as big an impression but in less direct ways, the shuffling and bubbling karimba is a skittish, busy affair with tribal drums and vocal chants all layered up into something that is sure to become anthemic in ibiza this summer. on the flip side hypnotised works on getting into your brain with tight, scurrying drum and percussive patterns that never let up. its a dense, busy arrangement that makes for a high octane ride. last of all inception takes on more of a house feel, with well swung, low slung drums bringing the groove as hammering hits and frosty synth lines keep busy up top. this is house and techno that makes a big impact from one of the most on point producers out there right now.

in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

in mid-seventies, nigerian bands came and went with alarming regularity, rising meteorically from the slums to stardom and falling back again just as quickly. masisi mass funk from anamara state was one such band. but during their brief moment in the stratosphere, they produced a funk gem in i want you girl.

ltd epress , expectations is an extended player from minimalist disco outfit harvey sutherland and bermuda. the second release for sutherlands own clarity recordings brings his bermuda project into sharp focus - six tracks spanning harveys influences from the west coast to west end records. recorded with bandmates graeme pogson (drums) and tamil rogeon (electric strings), expectations follows last years stomping label debut single * priestess/bravado*. the ep includes a long-awaited studio version of live favourite * clarity*, uptempo burner * coast 2 coast* and a moment of spiritual introspection with * spiders*. the title track offers glimmers of the doobies and the dan – a sign of things to come from the melbourne producer and his unique trio.

there arent many artists that can lay claim to having put out records on labels as divergent as rough trade and john talabot’s hivern discs. perhaps this is because few artists express such genuine diversity in their musical tastes and creative explorations as david kitt. since the turn of the decade as new jackson he has mined a seam of driving, ghostly house to run parallel with his solo strand of ambient folk electronica. his debut release in 2011 the night mail on pogo channeled early record collection heroes aphex twin and orbital through to drexciya and projekt pm but had one foot firmly in the 21st century beaming in like some futuristic cyberballad. on the flip side hussle free had that mix of house and boogie sensibilities with dark and dusty synths and vocoder that would become a signature. this was followed by acclaimed releases on hivern, permanent vacation, major problems, apartment and most recently cin cin. his debut album set for release on all city in may was recorded in kitt’s bedroom studio overlooking dublin bay, its nocturnal hues very much a product of the nightshift often working on headphones with the rest of his housemates fast asleep. it takes full advantage of the scope of the lp format, ebbing and flowing between deep house club ready gems and more restrained and meditative beatless moments for the morning after. the recording process yielded many eureka moments with kitt finally nailing sounds that had hitherto proved elusive. a key moment was getting a bank loan to buy an sp 1200 sampler

making his long awaited return to salt mines, hymns produces a debut 12” flecked with restrained breakbeats, off-kilter rhythms and glistening pads. opener ‘water acid’ is an eerie amalgamation of aquatic electro and tense emotion, built for a fractured dancefloor deep in the arctic ring. a2 ‘searching for the real’ provides a brief moment of introspection, before b-side leader ‘heinz harald frentzen’ crashes down and amplifies the intensity with sharp breaks and rapid, stark percussion. closing the release, title track ‘waves of nothing’ showcases hymns at his best, utilising lonely synths and equally mechanical and organic percussion to create a sentimental, vulnerable climax.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.

for the labels ninth release, deep a & biris black crow records revisits one that helped establish the labels direction back in the imprints first year. bcr003, insular realms by fellow israeli producer hakimonu, was praised by many including resident advisor, who said the ep proved his off-kilter take on techno and house is as vibrant and inviting as ever. now in 2017, deepa & biri have invited mind against, luigi tozzi and echologist (aka dub techno veteran brendon moeller) to all rework the original version of insular realms for 2017. first up are life & death’s mind against, with one of the fognini brothers most direct techno productions yet, with a mid-track moment of calm before the intensity resumes. luigi tozzi, the rome-based producer who has had previous outings on dynamic reflection and dino sabatinis outis music, contributes the second remix. taking the lead from the originals more ethereal moments, his version is dreamy & almost wistful as it propels along its shaking rhythm. the b-side offers two takes from brendon moeller in his echologist guise, with a dub mix that twists the original into an acid-inflected track that slowly ratchets up the tension over its seven minutes, while the reshape breaks things down into a churning rhythm peppered with flashes f off kilter sonic details.

deep purple’s 19th studio album sees the light of day. it is being released by the german based label earmusic. the band’s last studio effort dates back to 2005’s ‘rapture of the deep’ so this is a long time coming.
this will make album number four to feature steve morse on guitar and the third with keyboardist don airey. as previously reported, concrete information on the album title is, shall we say, up in the air. “there’s a big question mark over the name at the moment. and possibly an exclamation mark as well.” vocalist ian gillan told classic rock magazine.

mihai popoviciu has carved out a reputation for being one of the most innovative producers of electronic music active in europe today. the man from romania has established himself both as a highly respected producer releasing on labels such as highgrade, international gigolo and dessous and as a killer dj performing all over the world. fiction is his 4th release on poker flat recordings, and delivers four distinct flavours to sink your teeth into. i should is a slinky groover, with a slippery, evolving bassline, tight, funky percussion and a sultry female vocal. working just as effectively early in a set as a peak time moment, its bound to get rinsed in the coming months. twisted is a little harder - a straighter beat signals a more heads down approach, and the bassline is sure to trigger some dancefloor scenes wherever it gets played. next up is title track fiction which perhaps makes a reference to mihai’s background, with fragments of eastern european melodies woven into the beautiful synth work, all tied together over a spacey yet driving rhythm track. last but by no means least is interconnected - a straight up deep bomb with echoes of classic chicago deep and acidic house in its warm and sensual vibe.
