in 2017, the finnish jazz scene seems to bubble with talent. one of the most prominent players in this mix is by definition, trumpeter jukka eskola. after over a decade of adventures in different spaces of jazz – from the dance floor burn of the five corners quintet to the raw expressive modes of mikko innanen’s small big band, jimi tenor’s cosmic jazz and his own prime cti styled solo recordings – eskola takes things back to bare basics. and as usual, when it’s done right, it’s the best thing out there.

miles away records are proud to introduce our latest single to land on the label: the cosmic soul gem -super star- by ruth waters and the state of mind show band. a texas native, ruth -silky- waters was best known for her two disco-infused album s -never gonna be the same- and -out in the open-- produced by the late, great john davis (john davis orchestra). it was however some of ruth s early material that caught our interest when we started the label as far back as 2018. -super star-, released on the tiny independent kmba recordings label in the late 1970s, draws from the wells of modern soul and gospel with a touch of cosmic synthy goodness. an proper ear turner, it was like nothing we d heard before. flip it and -super star pt.2- goes deeper into the cosmic essence of the track with extended guitar and synth solos making this a crackin little 45. the track has been lovingly remastered by phil kinrade at the legendary air studios and the lacquer was cut deep by jukka at timmion records. it s now presented in our custom teal green labels and house bag.

dub at its best! 180g and vinyl only. ranges presents a collaborative release between two artists hailing from the forests of middle finland. jukka hänninen (aka tm shuffle and dj shuffle) is known for his deep and moody dub house/techno productions and for his label vuo records. jussi-pekka parikka (aka monoder) is recognized for his signature dubbed-out releases from the early 2000s on labels like statik entertainment and pakkas-levyt. together, they deliver two original tracks and two mutual reworks. ranging between warm deep/dub house to raw dub techno, the tracks represent an inspired journey infused with melancholic and reminiscent sounds.

taking inspiration from music, nature and the elements that surround them, jukka hänninen and mika hanka aka shuffless have quickly garnered the attention of many within house and techno since making their production debut in 2016. written at the vislampi studio, located in ruutana city, finland, using a combination of hardware gear from the likes of roland, korg and arturia, here we see the duo reveal their latest work with four diverse and expansive cuts set for release this spring as they return to syncrophone s in-house imprint. opening up the ep, hänninen and hanka fluently introduce chi , a complex and evolving cut that effortlessly fuses deep, rich chords, and delicate, skipping hi-hats, before easing into the flowing groove of lahti with its jazz-tinged melodies and heady tones guiding the production into lighter territories. on the flip, nime Ñvailla introduces a matrix of hazy textures amongst crunchy percussion licks and dubbed out atmospherics as the duo return to deeper, darker realms, before title cut puollaskel punctuates the package in classy fashion, laying down gritty analog percussion, resounding kicks and subtly programmed nuances to conclude an excellently worked ep.

geodetic is the joint venture of well-known italian experimentalist claudio rocchetti, a close collaborator of valerio tricoli, and jukka reverberi, founder of post-rock band giardini di mirò and half of cosmic electro-disco duo crimea x.instruments of discipline is proud to release cold lights , geodetic s second ep, the follow up to broken consonance , released on maple death records earlier this year. cold lights is an avant-garde undertaking that artfully weaves soundscapes that swing between murky industrial atmospheres to moments of uplifting levity, all held together by strong rhythmic grooves, a collage of at times familiar sounds juxtaposed into an altogether unfamiliar whole.
