fist of facts began life in a basement studio on ludlow street, downtown manhattan, in the mid-80s. the bastard child of liquid liquids salvatore prinicipato & ken man caldeira (part of the liquid liquid extended family and original liquid idiot member) the band lasted nearly a decade during which they created a uniquely downtown new york sound. these tracks sat in storage on cassette tape for 25 years are a part of music history. none of them have ever been heard by the public and it will be released as a hand numbered, 4 colour sleeve limited to 500 12 inches.

bonnie prince billy aka will oldham veröffentlicht mit “best troubador” eine hommage an einen seiner ewigen helden, country- und folk-ikone merle haggard. das werk von haggard begleitet bonnie prince billy nun schon seit mindestens 25 jahren. so coverte er nicht nur bei seinem ersten öffentlichen auftritt einen haggard-song. auch in den folgenden jahre seiner karriere bezog sich oldham immer wieder auf das werk und wirken haggards. das vorhaben, das nun im mai erscheinende album aufzunehmen, begleitete oldham schon eine ganze weile. das ziel war es, an der uralten tradition teilzuhaben, folk-songs an die nächste generation weiterzutragen. fast legte oldham das projekt auf eis, als er im april 2016 vom tod merle haggards erfuhr. statt in einem studio in nashville aufzunehmen, zogen sich oldham und seine mitmusiker zugunsten einer familiären aufnahme-atmosphäre in ein heimstudio zurück. so wurde dem andenken haggards werk durch besondere wärme und intimität würdevoller tribut gezollt.
die songs auf “best troubador” stammen aus allen schaffensphasen haggards. angefangen bei seinem 1967er album “i am a lonesome fugitive” bis hin zu seinem 47. album von 2011, “working in tennessee”, ist es allerdings kein simples best-of geworden, stattdessen kuratierte oldham die songauswahl entlang seiner persönlichen favoriten aus merles katalog.

the sixth release from hong kong/tokyo label palms & charms sees the return of barnaby bruce, and starts with a tale of daring escape. hearing the approach of a loping synth, the protagonist checks the window: mysterious people are gathering outside his house! as a somewhat gallic groove emerges, he and his girlfriend are in his car and heading south, driven on by the swing of the percussion. will he find his deliverance on the continent? next up, ruf dug steps in with a spacious electronic reggae-esque remix, leading up to a killer piano line which pushes the groove straight onto the autoroute. ces t magnifique. on the b-side, our erstwhile fugitive and partner awake by the side of a country road in southern france. a baguette, a bottle of wine and the sound of chattering insects. oh, for the cicadas! as they head ever further south, they begin to reflect on what other worlds await them at journey s end. on the car radio a band plays a curious but driving blend of disco and percussion, with a distinctly house-influenced melody. cette musique les deplace. was it all just a crazy dream? grab your suitcase, head to the coast and pick up a copy of this limited edition record to find out...
