it is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis, the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era. le renard bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between lafawndah and composer midori takada, and filmmakers partel oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. as transmitted by takada, the fox appears in both ancient senegalese and japanese folktales as the trickster archetype, belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature.

repress - without dl code - susso, aka bassist / producer huw bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to gambia. initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated susso and kuyateh griot families.
the tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings and huw’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist, performing tuned percussion from the region including the mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, aswell drawing on his skill as a professional upright / electric bassist. the music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional gambian aesthetic. keira (meaning peace) guides the listener through huw’s journey up the river gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

discographies in dance music don’t come much more impressive than that belonging to paul woolford, the man behind seminal releases for the likes of planet e, xl recordings and running back. special request is the project that sees him continuing to defy expectation with a new ep on the fabric-run label houndstooth. stairfoot lane bunker encapsulates this approach with 5 bold new excursions into the outer limits followed by a remix from minor science (known for his previous releases on whities and the trilogy tapes) the eagle-eyed will notice 5 of these tracks appear on fabriclive 91. this ep is issued as an addendum. redrum is the fierce opener. rampantly-edited electro beats, a sampled speak-n-spell vocal, and a pure sci-fi breakdown sets the scene for the rest. stairfoot lane bunker and replicant are jungle tracks taken to dizzying extremes - the former building from widescreen atmospherics, thunder spells and lightning before descending into a frenzy of breakbeats and long heavy bass notes. replicant ratchets the pressure up further with hyper-edits across it s breakbeat introduction and throughout, punctuated by furnace-rattling subs. telepathic dog and five lane ends are highly evocative ambient pieces, pushing into the uncanny realms of metaphysical music. to end the release minor science comes through with his remix of stairfoot lane bunker, effortlessly blending in his own work with the disjointed sr breakbeats, flashing only snippets of the serrated bars, chopping them up and creating a new track in the process.

the search from collocutor, the band’s second lp, is the story of a journey, from disillusionment to new beginnings, alienation to belonging, darkness to hope. it is a journey that can be interpreted as spiritual, emotional or physical/geographical, depending on the listener’s own experiences. tamar osborn, the band leader and composer says: “this wasn’t planned as a ‘concept’ album, but as the four main compositions developed they and their titles fell into a natural narrative order and the theme of the album became apparent. the three improvised conversations were an opportunity to explore musically the meaning of ‘collocutor’ - a person taking part in a conversation - and how this applies to performance, and also to expand the textural range of the ensemble by dividing it into smaller groupings and freeing the musicians from structured composition.”

eva geist s music is inspired by dreams, lost paradises, and new horizons of human belonging.” eva geist is an italian electronic musician and composer based in berlin. her early musical experiences in electronic music were largely self-directed, beginning with use of synthesizers and sequencers to different audiovisual computer and mobile technologies.geist s music builds up a cinematic musical journey around rarefied melodies, arpeggiators, soft beats and space disco. under the eva moniker hides the underground polyedric artist andrea noce, who previously released a mini-lp last year with david kristian on macadam mambo. this ep includes a wonderfull remix of «tanz im morgenmantel » by salon des amateurs head’s tolouse low trax, transposing it in a very subaquatic version, and a sublime artwork by talented artist maria torres

foql is belonging to the same polish electronic music collective as marburg (see gooiland 10: v/a – club funny horse) but the sound of this project is truly different… in a way the hypatia ep is delicate and even fragile maybe… it has the ritual feeling like some of the music by coil has… next to that it has textures reminiscent of the future sound of london… and in some ways foql fuses ambient, electronix and techno in the same way kobosil sometimes does… in short.. this is a record for well informed and well educated music lovers.

the dutchman jeroen verheij aka secret cinema is now looking back on almost twenty years of experience within the field of electronic music. his first production sonar system, which has originally been released on the legendary belgian label hithouse under the alias meng syndicate in 1990 and was re-released two years later on music man, is rightly belonging to the absolute classics of rave techno and has antedated the rotterdam-detroit sound axis with providing a staccato somewhere in between a piercing snare and an acid siren.

the story of steppah huntah is the story of two musicians - steven j, a bass player and oless t, a pianist, and a chance meeting at a strasbourg jazz club one autumn evening in 2002. the duo were soon inspired to work together to fuse their love for jazz, afrobeat & funk in the service of a new driven sound, powered by the seemingly endless possibilities offered by new computer technology. instinctively, the musicians looked west to the emerging beat and kind of jazz style, deeply influenced in their musical experimentation by pioneers such as incognito, talking loud label. remix made by japanese producer and dj whos made a name for himself worldwide in the last few years is mitsu the beats. that makes his beats very original & unique & not belonging to any one kind of music.

part of the ed banger family since 2008, the three brothers from dsl, meaning sorry in text language, have nothing to be sorry about. au contraire, by mixing hip hop and dance music, the band happens to be the precursor of a new genre, belonging to no other that the one aiming to make people groove. with their second studio album, dsl confirm the specific touch of theirs.

this latest release by the ever impressive trunk records consists of two jazz recordings from 1964. the first four tracks, credited to west indian trumpeter shake keane, are taken from an unreleased acetate belonging to garricks private collection. the final four tracks consist of the shake keane & michael garrick quartettes a case of jazz ep that had a limited pressing of just 99 copies. much like trunks earlier michael garrick release moonscape (which was recorded in the same year), this is indeed obscure 1960s uk jazz. the first four cuts from the untitled acetate are very much jazz of the bossa nova variety. the hastings girls choir feature on the first two tracks and their lush vocals add a cool exotic vibe. tracks 3 & 4 are taken from the flipside of the acetate and were recorded with the gordon langford orchestra. the final four tracks from the a case of jazz ep are freer flowing and keanes trumpeting accompanied by garricks piano makes for some quality early modern british jazz. moody album closer regrets is a stunner and best showcases how well they both compliment each other.
