the secret initiative has been cloaked in secrecy since it’s inception in 2009.
over the past 8 years there has been a lot of speculation on who the artist(s) is/are behind this project. is it a collective of artists or a solo artist still remains to be answered. the secret initiative is a multi styled project ranging across the spectrum of acid techno, dub techno, hard techno & ebm mostly done in a 1990’s flavor but with a modern day punchy production sound. here on the latest release we have two peak time dance floor killers. “synesthete” a dark track-y techno climax-er with a whisper vocal sample repeating “i see the music, i hear the light” which builds into a monster of a track. on the flip side is the hard but hypnotic “return to mcmxc” which pays hommage to the 1990 frankfurt technoclub/dorian gray ebm techno sound.

vinyl only, ahead of their collaborative album later this year, pier bucci and oskar szafraniec present their first sampler titled tipico latino featuring a remix by el_txef_a. emerging in the mid 00 s, chilean producer pier bucci first appeared on cadenza with a release alongside luciano himself before dropping multiple releases on crosstown rebels, including his acclaimed album familia . since then he s appeared on get physical and rawax, not to mention launching maruca music - a platform for his own music featuring heavyweight remixers such as baby ford and thomas melchior. szafraniec has been producing under different monikers since 13 years old, releasing two solo albums, recording alongside a guy called gerald in 2012/2013, and touring as a live performer. as oskar szafraniec his production debut was a collaboration alongside ricardo villalobos two years ago, but since then he s appeared on murge recordings and cyclo, as well as collaborating with pier bucci on rawax, who oskar met whilst touring japan tipico latino features gloomy spanish vocals as intricate elements are brought in and out of the mix across its nearly nine-minute duration. subtle throbs and echoing effects are blended with metallic percussion and deep synths for a wistful and mesmerising aesthetic. forbidden colours founder el_txef_a, whose remix talents have been recruited by permanent vacation, galaktika, akbal and culprit, reimagines the original providing a drawn out intro before exploding into a frenzy of crashing cymbals, animated acid and serene vocal moans.

one third of london modular alliance and sought after electro artist pip williams (aka phil ventre) graces cpu with some acid drenched electro-funk. over driven 808 percussion and 303 basslines slice through this ep with searing accuracy creating a highly effective dj weapon. ventre’s jedi like synthesis skills are inspiring, with sublime sculpted leads and sci-fi bleeps rhythmically scattered throughout, all 4 tracks give you an insight into his synchronised sub-oscillating mind.

coming hot on the heels of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album are two eps of striking reinterpretations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature rich territories. the production specialists on the first ep include ricardo villalobos and vilod, the collaborative duo with max loderbauer. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s am- biq trio, lends his talents to both of these new eps.

for their 12th release, fasaan recordings has dug deep into the techno underground of malm and found the drum machine anthems of frankie twilight. not your usual techno producer, the woman behind this alan vega-esque alias does not subscribe to any genre definitions. having played in a berlin-based punk band as well as acting as resident dj at a members only 78 rpm jazz club, to say her tastes are diverse is quite an understatement. the diy spirit is however a red thread throughout the 4 tracks of her synergy ep for fasaan

lemmy ashton made quite a splash with his first outing on his own tnc label last year, and now hes back to follow up with another salvo of premium heaters geared towards disco friendly dancers. there s a chunky, looped up quality to silver suitcase with its insistent bass lick and slamming drums, but there s equal space for soul thanks to the string-loaded sample hook. by way of contrast lunaire fires up the acid flare and heads straight into a babbling brook of 303-related goodness. amsterdam rounds the ep off on a stomp, whipping up the kind of bombastic disco drama that would get studio 54 moving were it in action today

as a recent emerging artist, rommek has shown promising developments in his own sound, as well as carving his way into the current techno scene. his extensive interest in sound design is embedded within the atmospheric, dynamic and textured tracks he produces. his debut, thought patterns ep on the london based label weekend circuit, established his position on the map. since then, various releases have proven his wide appeal through the combination of the energetic, gritty uk sound coalesced with deep and transcendental aspects. with his debut release last year on blueprint with ‘moth hole ep’ he is back with this percussive ep.

this is the 3rd release on riot radio records, an independent techno label based in scotland. ingen is an edinburgh based producer who s sound is one of harsh complex poly-rhythms and soundscapes that crosses over into the darker realms of techno. over the years he s appeared on many respected labels and also works regularly on projects with some of the worlds techno elite. for those lucky enough to see him battering out his stunning live sets, playing alongside such lumineries as surgeon, whitehouse and the advent, these humbled few know exactly what extremes ingen is capable of reaching to crush your senses into submission. on this release, along with the original version of haste makes waste , there are remixes of this beast of track by lag, martyn hare, paul birken, duellist and the riot remix (ingeneered by taser), each one taking the original composition down a different track. the ingeneers have spoken.

new york native shawn o’sullivan returns to avian as 400ppm with debut lp, ‘fit for purpose’.
as an artist, o’sullivan has long since explored the juncture between hard-hitting, functional dance floor material and more lofty, conceptual work. from a purely structural standpoint, the artist’s return to avian bears all the hallmarks of previous output under the alias, utilising the same palette found on early ep’s for guy brewer’s label. stripped back and driven, the music marries caustic drum-machine polyrhythms with warping, pitch bent leads and characteristically atmospheric use of reverb. it’s a decidedly dance floor offering, but the music comes refracted through o’sullivan’s own lens, with plenty of elegant references to a career spent exploring much of the techno genre’s periphery, from noise to new wave. crushed vox bubble up from beneath wrought-iron percussion and the artist takes time to step away from high energy 4×4 workouts to explore more complex rhythmic structures and harsh, low tempo grooves.

the artists and inventors, along with the many other notable composers present on this 2lp compilation, are the true innovators in the sounds and science of electronic music and its production. they are the ones responsible for the dawn of a much revered genre, the originators of the musical concepts that have since developed into what we now know as electronica and dance. these are the true pioneers of electronic music.

indira paganotto returns with her third pooledmusic ep, featuring a pair of remixes from label boss ian pooley. having made her debut in 2012 aged just 19, indira has spent the intervening years honing her sound and exploring new approaches to music. currently based in madrid, paganotto s father was a dj in goa, where she spent a significant portion of her upbringing. having grown up with her father s collection of trance, acid & psychedelic rock records, paganotto s eclectic musical education has informed her music s individuality. her 2014 solo ep time out man blended these inspirations into a pair of evocative house grooves. this development continues with kashmir & savannah, both of which find the 24-year-old producer in confident form. ian pooley provides a pair of his own trademark dancefloor-focused dubs to complete a package that confirms paganotto as a new talent in the ascendancy.

after 10 years of releasing on some of the most respected labels in the scene including 31 records, commercial suicide and samurai music, soul intent is to release his first solo album via his own imprint, lossless music. the album features collaborations with chromatic, jazz vocalist sue mae, as well as his old dataset band mate chris gittins.
in soul intent’s own words: “i wanted the make an album that had continuity but also showed all the vibes and styles i m into as a producer, dj and general lover of this music. hopefully it’s an album of substance and people enjoy the journey.”

taking proto sites back to the hypnotic hardware methods of earlier releases like lutto lento, s olbricht and sentry, suspension ep makes things kaleidoscopic, raw, repetitive and asynchronous. high gain perishing delays gradually cook your brain while flerbing sci-fi reverberations crawl across the atmosphere. this five-track cassette mantra has a furry analogue outer crust barely containing its computer controlled acid consciousness. each tune has its own density and unique stripped back bass structure which carries the whole thing along, absorbing strange hissy elements as it rocks downstream. breaking through the mantle, sawtooth voices murmur foreign incantations, swinging loopy phrases come and go jamming their way into repetitive bass squelches all pressure cooked to the extreme.

brendon moeller makes a neat fit on vancouver island s finest outpost of dusky avant-techno. moeller has of course turned his hand to many different shades of rhythm over the course of his career, but there s something in his blown out, dub-smoked sound that aligns perfectly with the autumnal introspection of silent season. the results live up to the promise, from the warm but melancholic throb of glow to the oppressive sub pulse of abandon. the hike takes things into more abstract territory, and then yearning rounds the record off on an oblique swinging techno tip trasnmitted from out in the leftfield.

odes of the kabatians is a collaborative project from emergent french producers pvnv and amandra, and with their inclusion on the silent season x series they bring a different mood from the consistent dubbed-out nature of many of the releases. varsovie i is a crisp and clear exercise in cyclical techno programming, while varsovie ii throws shades of light and dark into the melting pot to create an arresting modern techno workout. on the flipside varsovie iii takes a more murky turn towards intricate textures and rhythms and then -varkovie iv- blows things open with a broken beat and tender chords, while still retaining that tough production finish that gives the record its grit.

hypnus records regular blndr makes the leap over to silent season as they continue to celebrate their expansive tenth anniversary with a series of unmissable 12inches. dub techno is very much the order of the day on this grip of four tracks from the french producer, with shimmering chords and subterranean rhythms spelling out a perfect recipe for total meditation. -abstraction- is a highlight with its thin slithers of sound ducking and diving between the erratic kicks while partial drifts on a slow-creeping beat that gently buffets the vaporous chords downstream. with whispers of club compatibility tucked into the folds of these heavy-lidded tunes, there are many ways you could find yourself engaging with this 12inch.

the thule vaults open up once more to give us further insight into the foundations of one of the great bastions of icelandic deep house and techno. plastic is an early alias of yagya, who was on searing form when he originally made the river electric 12- back in 1999. a metallic finish gives -brain plasticity- it s unique appeal, while -translated translations translated- heads into dubbier territory (albeit with some cheeky bitcrushing thrown in for good measure). whichever cut you plump for, thule have dusted down yet another gem of unique scandinavian techno you won t want to be without.

o celebrate the 25th anniversary of ugkãs first album, get on down goes the extra mile, presenting it for the first time ever on vinyl. and 2-lp clear vinyl at that, giving the strutting, funky grooves the chance to really stretch out on your system. back in 1992, southern hip-hop was still proving to the world that it could sustain a fan base that was chiefly raised on rap from new york and la. the geto boys and 2 live crew had made strong cases by the earliest 90s, and pimp c and bun b were ready to make their own. most of the trunk-bumping bass comes from drum programs and basic sampling on these tunes in later years they would build their sound into something even fuller and deeper. self-produced with additional work from houston locals bernie bismark and shetoro henderson, the tracks here are minimal, slow and menacing, which matched their lyrical approach quite nicely. you can hear the beginnings of the groups true greatness in these early lyrical workouts ¹ several taken from the regional cassette-only ep the southern way that got them signed to jive with tales of street hustles, relationships and self-reliance in a world stacked against them. they may have been done early-on, but that doesnt mean they arent crucial to ugks legacy cases in point being the three singles: something good, a charismatic update to bill withers use me up, and pocket full of stones (the latter featured on the menace ii society soundtrack). beyond the singles, deeper cuts like iãm so bad, feels like iãm the one whos doin dope and cramping my style made it clear to the world that this crew had the attitude and charisma to make even bigger waves in the years to come.

one of the core members of the apollonia family is the mastermind behind the label’s latest release. shonky steps up with his first solo ep since ‘plombiére’ which dropped in july 2016. full of funky flavours and that distinct ‘shonky style’, the new ep consists of four brand new tracks produced exclusively for apollonia. each track emanates its own unique vibe, while reppin’ shonk’s irresistible groove. on side a we have ‘tyrolien’, a jaunty number with bright tones and a tight, rolling groove. shonky injects it with a series of unusual fx and what sounds like an wizened old creature, speaking about ‘the foulest stench in the air’. it’s a superb combination and sets the ep off to a great start.next up is ‘beat street’ which has a heavier set of beats, which stomp down as a marauding b-line gets to work. tiny fizzes and cheeps in the background add depth, sounding like robotic birds at play in the wild. the track is minimal in its make up, but deep and engrossing, classic shonky material.flip the vinyl over and we have ‘torro rosso’, a bold, stomping workout with fresh percussion and a jovial analogue riff. as the bubbly low end percolates way down below, the beats pump the track along and an extra layer of analogue funk enters the fray midway through. the final track is titled ‘serpent a&#768,,, sonnette’ and swithes the vibe. it’s loose, meandering and twisted, with a hypnotic bassline and super sharp percussion. this one is going to get the dance floor locked into a groove, as it progresses a sweet, chirpy melody brightens the mood. feel the glow!once again shonky demonstrates his ability to produce groovy dance floor cuts that have their own unique fingerprint, danceable, unusual and utterly captivating. grab the new ep now!

a newborn imprint with an obscure name makes the perfect home for kozo to showcase some of his studio work under the ooodjkoz alter ego.
uncle tom’s tune needs all its 13 minutes to develop, with the melodic pattern fading in and out the wobbly baseline, like hiding from the sci fi sounds scattered throughout the track. crafted to please crowds that enjoy to be cooked slowly, milly van illy takes it to a more dynamic pace, stiching the groove beneath the percussions and storing all the energy into the hi hats. as for lady gargara, we’re gratified with a twisted cocktail of chopped voices stuttering on broken drum loops.

pisetzky s full debut album on just this includes adventures into contemporary techno music, fines ambient works, and unique broken pieces. an intense mixture of incredible warmth, weird fluffiness, mystic trumpets and high uplifts, the album is interspersed with short ambient and fragmentated interludes, each just a few minutes long: ‘state of consciousness’ and ‘tears of a rough machine’ are serene and reflective tracks that give the listener time to breathe and bringing him/her back to more dancefloor focused tracks of the lp like viridis, bakwas and wand. the result is a magic story, a history in eleven chapters that the listener is guided through, like the landscapes of a mystic journey, with a twist on the melodies and hidden effects behind every deep bass sound.
