the soul notes imprint has never restricted itself to just one sound. ever since it emerged in late 2011, the basque county based outfit has shown several sides of its identity and has developed into a diverse and well balanced home. one of the labels usual suspects is cologne native, adryiano. after reaping some havoc with his efforts on the snx series early last year, adryiano has been crafting his down south ep (ironically) somewhere in the north rhine-westphalian concrete jungle. the down south ep is buldging with deep sine basses, fine rhythmic synthwork and lavish but hefty beats. the title track showcases these exact things best. the essence of adryiano s latest effort is still somewhat hard to pin down. a lot of different moods are going on throughout the ep while the overall sounds maintains it s own glance. from the deep machinefunk on down south to the broken beats of feel what you do. all of these bits have a nice theme to them.

the detroit music community has outposts in nearly every major city, and vancouver, british columbia is no exception. this ep represents the connection of two such artists, detroit native, josh garrett, who currently resides in vancouver and runs the subspec label, and rennie foster, a stalwart of the underground, who has spent a quarter of his life in tokyo, but born in bc and now living back there, in vancouver. rennie has released on a myriad of detroit labels, such as transmat, teknotika, soiree, subject detroit, wallshaker, and motech. josh and rennie met in vancouver, only since rennies recent return, and realizing they were of the same tribe, immediately began to collaborate on a number of projects, now including this limited run, double a-side, record, chalk full of dj friendly techno trax, firmly rooted in the motor city sound, yet unique enough to be a contributor, not just another imitator.

the art of omission is a craft new jersey native joey anderson masters like few others. after releasing an acclaimed debut album in 2014, anderson returns to the dekmantel label serving up the signature sound we love him for. with the 1974 ep, he continues his modern day techno odyssey investigating the outskirts of the genre, while focusing on details and unexpected twists. serving up dense melodic structures, intense chord progressions and unique but relentless drum programming and sounds, anderson shows that the future of techno is bright, original and full of energy.

mulen marks the arrival of its second vinyl with the release aloft from tish. this kiev-based lady is definitely seen as a key player in the ukrainian underground. the original mix of aloft is stripped-down vogue techno with a funky baseline and tick-tock percussion. the track is flashing out the skippy, atmospheric style one might call mulen s signature sound. under number two we have samples of silence where tish explores possibilities of rhythm and space. the track progresses through a clean path of precision drums to a warmer meditative lead. on the b-side cadenza native valentino kanzyani plugs 9 minute remix of the titled aloft. quoting a minimal running techno, kanzyani stockpile some much-needed tension while keeping the arrangement uncluttered. his hypnotic groove beneath a blunted and ponderous baseline deliver us a darker, more cosmic vibe.
