jon dasilva is one of the original hacienda (the manchester club) djs and was behind the decks when house exploded in the uk during the summer of love in 1988 as well as being a tour dj for new order and the haciendas usa tour in 1990. since then he has been credited for mentoring djs such as sasha and been an inspiration to laurent garnier a.o. he has also got a string of releases under his belt for labels such as soma, deconstruction, robs records and better days. check! on his debut release he teams up with vocalist donald waugh and the return to the roots of house music with >love is all we need<. together they have created a house classic that never was, reminiscent of an essential dj international release or alike. comes as full vocal and dubbed out bootleg mix. on the flip we find brailles on remix duties. fresh from his massive >the year 3000< on our direct current series, braille pushes >love is all we need< into the next century. classic feel good stuff. this is how we like our vocal house!

in january 2011 mark was invited by erik wiegand (aka errorsmith) to make some presets for his new software synthesizer which he was building for native instruments. after developing about 40 sounds*, mark decided to rework his ul8 project by extending the pattern generating systems used in its construction, which he then connected to the sounds produced in erik s synthesizer. the result is this double 12 single, featuring 9 tracks and a remix from mark s friend and colleague mat steel.

there are few labels who will get the opportunity to work extensively with the most dynamic remixers, dj s and producers of this decade. bbe seems to keep coming up trumps. grammy award winner louie vega has been on top of the dj game for over 2 decades. he gained further notoriety as part of the collective known as ‘masters at work’ with kenny gonzalez form a formidable partnership reminiscent of the greatest producers of yesteryear. quincy did it with chaka khan, james ingram, al jarreau and the brothers johnson, while gamble and huff did it with archie bell and the drells, harold melvin and the bluenotes, teddy pendergrass and mfsb.

so it was a massive pleasure that maya chose 2020vision for her next full single release. when we discussed the project with her we agreed it was vital to put together a single that truly reflected her diverse tastes and skills. the title track >focus now< is a unique work that will be hard to even categorise. reminiscent of early matthew jonson records >focus now< features delicate synth sequences weaving in and out of intricate rhythms. it sounds amazing on big systems, like at fabric, where it was road tested by ralph lawson at the recent 2020vision party. it is one to drop at the right time to make a real change in mood and set direction. we then have >little one< which is a solid deep house groove, simple but effective. vocal snippets are added by mjc herself on both tracks but her true vocal talents are shown on >senseless<...

in 2009 the internationally acclaimed german director tom tykwer (perfume, run lola run, the international) supervised a film project in kenyas largest township kibera together with his wife marie steinmann. they put together a team of international film pros that each mentored one film student and helped them put together the movie soul boy. a story about a boy who has to go on a journey to rescue his fathers soul from a mysterious voodoo women.
the result of xavers score is a percussive journey reminiscent of minimal music from the 60s paired with african vibes but completely void of world music cliches. its closer to krautrock and steve reich than to the commonly shallow perception of indigenous music by first world movie directors. full of odd sounding kalimbas and plucky guitars, backed by heavy orchestral drumming and floating e-bows.

it seems that dapayk used to listen to a lot of hip-hop when he was younger. his latest ep for still vor talent >let go< has got these influences written all over it. the title track starts out with a male vocal and some sounds that sound a little like scratching before things then quickly head into the direction of the club. the vocal by singer camara could not be more reminiscent of 80s house music and this track has got all the soul and groove of this era. beneath the delicate vocal and sound patterns lies a wonderfully simply staccato house groove that is sure to get everyone shuffling. on the flip things get a little more techy with >nneka<, a deeper and more melodic tech house glider that gently takes the listener towards a harmonic state of mind. beautifully arpeggiated pads, a warm soulful groove and some reverbed vocals make this one. last up is the sample-based tech-house stomper >upyo< featuring production partner jon hester. this is loop heaven: a pushy beat loop with many snares, reverse samples and an unexpected saxophone melody make this one the perfect changeover track from warm-up to peak-time. this ep shows dapayks skills to combine many musical influences into his unique still of tech-house music

one would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. images and visuals floating through your head as you press play, the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. as the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine japanese taiko drummers playing their part. once the break takes hold, a short span of melodic heaven uplifts before the drums take control again.

the energetic >coconut coast< is an awesome example of whats coming from oriol, and he has bought some remixers along for the party too. faltydl brings the tempo down and gives the track a strange off key shuffling rub thats reminiscent of theo parrish at his oddest. mike paradinas in his jake slazenger guize, does a mix of >memories< thats almost funky house, mixed with big rubbery jazz chords and classy diva vocal samples. shortstuff takes >memories< and draws it into strange new shapes over stiff beats.

released on the always reliable hit farm neon gold, which has given the world marina & the diamonds, ellie goulding, your twenties and penguin prison among others, starsmith is a super-hip young producer who has worked with ellie on her album, as well as remixing marina, passion pit, nerd and loads of others. its a scorching electro-tinged pop demon, glam without the cheese, and reminiscent of the kind of smashes that the french house lords of the mid 90s (like fred falke and alan braxe - more on him later...) were ruling dance music with. great sample from an old ritchie family (clip below...) disco stomper from the 80s which powers the whole thing with a undeniable hands-in-the-air vibe. a big autumn hit!

tahloulas >we play house< in a remix incarnation by chris lattner is at last ready for release after figuring in charts and steadily garnering hype for more than a year. louise marie tüxens charming lyrics are sung on a morphing and modern house beat while a devastating organ-stab pushes the track on endlessly. a classic new york bass-line injects head-nodding and foot-tapping while small vocal snippets and fills create a layered floor-destroyer. a tune that easily could – and nearly did - stand alone, but to the luck of the listeners more is in store for them. emil & chesper, allows us the joy of putting out >the nigerian hustle<. dark and funky with rolling basslines and shadowy percussion, this track is heavily rooted in both berlins minimalism and detroits groovyness.to top off the good fortune is james braun & ubebes >neotony< – a percussion-oriented tech-house track reminiscent of chicago, where banging toms and vintage 808 claps all merge together to form a shining synergy, while blue chords and floating strings engulfs the listener.

top canadian dj todd omotani enlists the amazing vocalist jaidene veda for his debut release on amenti music, a fine deep house outing reminiscent of mood ii swing. the ep features none other than the legendary charles webster on two excellent remixes!

the producer team solan yields an ideal division into compartments. when studio producer stefan klauck and dj denis reinhardt met in front of a mixing desk in 2007, it was an ideal combination of different experiences: the one who has produced various music styles from downbeat to electro, the other a dedicated follower of house who never wanted to hide his knack for soul and disco. the two of them soon found a common denominator.the project solan has by now crafted tracks which embrace the qualities of newer deep house productions and classical house music, that is reminiscent of a traditional u.s. sound.

quantecs sven schienhammer shows no sign of letting the quality levels drop with his latest releases on echocord and statik entertainment. his first release for phonobox records brings 4 tracks of deeper dub house and techno.>circles (re-edit)< contains the classic quantec elements, foggy atmosphere and slow-mo techno, reminiscent of the most smacked out echospace/deepchord releases. >ramified< revolve around maurizio-dipped basslines with spiraling dub chords.>force vive< and >swayings< are the closest youll come to a house rhythm.

yost returns with another installment of his now classic series. this time its two tracks reminiscent of the original ir265 bongo madness. both feature more house oriented vibes with that patented yost percussive sound.

habibi leads things off by conjuring some middle eastern vibes, including spoken samples of the tracks title and sitar loops.
in nightlcubs continues with a balkan vibe, featuring some upbeat horns that give the track a great bouncy feel and is reminiscent of smith n hacks remix for herbert. remixes come from exploited-chief shir khan and deadfishs finest camel.

the first teaser from the long awaited second album of phil mison (aka cantoma) comes in a true idjut boy haze. reminiscent of early u star at its best, their remix of >north shore< is one of the most locked-in grooves we have heard for some time. the vocal version sucks you into an almost trance like fashion and is purely made for the late night hours on a sweaty dancefloor. hearing this on a big system is truly a spiritual experience. the instrumental ties down an amazing second 12 inch for leng and gives us further excitement on the release of the second cantoma album. simply terrific.

fear of flying regular leif provides the 4th release for fofs revitalised limited label. a supa slick slice of modern vocal house, priority sees leif up his game with supremely tight production, a killa funked up b-line and sensual vocal from new recruit donna lea. for remix duties we opted for the up & coming talents of young un ethyl along with production partner flori. they come up with an altogether different take, coaxing elements of the vocal into a bigger sounding deep house experience. finally we thought we opt for a little bit of a curve ball in the shape of daze maxim. upon hearing dazes installment in the excellent story series we knew he was someone we needed to get on board - here daze strolls into tough tech house territory with a groove slightly reminiscent of rick wade at his most dance floor

remember your first time at a rave? of course you don’t. and if you do, you either did it wrong or you’re a liar. with the latest installment of the 7777 onslaught, jared wilson aims to remind you of a time you dont remember. this ep is a souvenir back in time. beyond the zero and beyond the one and back into the analog bringing back memories you never had and experiences you never felt. paris massacre is reminiscent of a time when function mattered more than form and fashion, when sound systems and no lighting took precedence over state of the art fashion shows and laptop djs. its not nostalgic by any stretch of the word, though. how can one be nostalgic for a time they cant recall? the flip of the record is the wonderful >scmocid<, a wonderful reexamination of what it means to work a 303 to near death.

we lost track of rocco branco nearly 5 years ago. no >goodbye<, nothing, he simply vanished off the grid. a few days ago, mr. branco staggered into the hirsch camp, smelling of sex and jaegermeister, no explanation. no apologies. rocco simply handed over two tracks, turned around, and walked away... diamant captures the sex of a one-night stand. a metaphysical launch pad of selfindulgence. no compromises, purely physical, firm and purposeful – precisely how we like our techno. gibbon depicts sex with a lover – reminiscent of gratifications past. familiar, nubile and polished a mastered motion of lustful appetite. in roccos return, we find a record of lifes carnal moments. good hunting!
