moss co. kicks off 2018 with the indivisual ep from the supremely talented mariano mateljan. mariano and label boss, archie hamilton have been talking about an ep on moss co. for a number or years, and it is a tribute to both of their perfectionism that it finally lands in all good stores april 6th. made in his home studio in split, the record came together from several analogue jam sessions. aimed squarely at the small hours, the deeply trippy and haunting tracks take influence from the micro house of the 90 labels like cabinet and perlon and producers like schatrax and matthew johnson. the record is a fine example of marianos ever-maturing sound timeless minimalistic house music that will cast a spell over dance floors the world over.

mysterious berlin imprint mask preps its second release with four more untitled tracks this march. continuing the theme of the first release, noah has been produced and recorded live in one take using a selection of analogue gear, including an emu sp 1200, mutual instruments ambika, nord rack 2x, octatrack, vermona action filter 4. a soothing synth line sets the tone of the a1 before implementing sporadic drums and squelchy notes, making way for the melodic chords and a wall of sub bass in the mesmerising a2. murky atmospherics and a medley of percussive hits generate a dusty aesthetic in the b1 until the organic beat and distorted robotic sounds of the b2 provide an otherworldly conclusion to the enigmatic release.

phantasm is a new vinyl label and collaboration between amsterdam s sinchi collective and the much-admired night noise outlet, based in geneva. it kicks off with a strong ep from the soviet union aka richard baldwin, including classy remixes from sinchi themselves and in flagranti. baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. a fine dj, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. this track was first written on a cold evening in december 2010 using a roland tr707 and jx8p synth. after collaborating with his songwriting partner the track was given a haunting vocal and released as the disappearance of becky sharp , while the original remained on baldwin s soundcloud and got id requests from all over the world. 7 years later it comes back to life in the form of its original instrumental, with a 2017 rework, plus remixes by sinchi and in flagranti.

the next chapter in shaw cuts comes from russian duo poima, who celebrate their debut record twin blades of doom – a fierce revenge mission and hunt after the infamous ghost gang. the pursuit opens with triglau , its linear machine groove levelling a fraction of the ghost gang. heads roll on a crimson floor. teaming up with mysterious masked warrior inland, triglau morphs into a hypnotic trip. pushing drum rhythms and swirling pads combine with nasty noise elements, propelling the hunt. the remaining enemy members are already hatching their next evil move. on the way to lu he village where the ghost gang plans its next assault, analogue break-beat punches and swinging percussions weave a menacing tapestry of sound, crushing the bones of rogue creatures in its path. serbian slayer regen arrives in force for the final showdown at qi dou town where the ghost gang plans a huge heist. armed with atmospheric pads and a soaring drum crescendo, his interpretation of bones ends the ghost gang tyranny in one fatal sweep. and the saga goes on...

man power his raw electronic sound, organic flourishes and diverse selection make him a perfect match for dgtl, both on stage as well as on the imprint. next to releasing a steady flow of records on established labels like esp institute, optimo trax, correspondant and hivern discs, man power is running his own shop as well: me me me. this gives him an outlet to release music by both friends and himself. for his release on dgtl records he created a three-track ep called apologue ep, that showcases just two of different sides of his multi-faceted musical scope. the a-side features two firm, acid influenced tracks. the first of these two, the duelist, is an emotive house record, with a soundscape of piano melodies, synths and syncopated percussion laid on top of an acid bassline. el mago del tiempo features heavy hitting kicks combined with a sharp synth pattern. it has a long build up that keeps evolving throughout the entire composition. halfway through, the track breaks in to a raw and fierce rhythm accompanied by yearning, drawn-out synth pads. on the flipside, put your hands on the car (and get ready to die) brings back memories of a long gone past with nods to balearic pop, ebm, and the soundtrack work of stewart copeland, james horner, and jan hammer. this multi layered production has a warm and analogue sounding feel to it that rounds off a 3 dimensional release.

aktion mutante (violet poison and unhuman) is a synth-punk project recalling the ‘80s minimal-wave melancholic vibes with new school ebm/ cyber-punk noise cuts. the realistic mutation of the human body into a surreal and ascetic mind setting of an apocalyptic contemporary society. a live force with analogue machines. aktion mutante’s alchemy of splintered synth-punk, bloody ebm and haunting wave injects right into the veins and spreads quickly through the body. the duo of violet poison (veleno viola) and unhuman (liber null) couldnt be more suited for each other. after meeting at liber null’s duality event in 2015, the two artists clicked immediately and were able to record some material in italy during the winter of 2016. the result is this suburb 12inch which is composed of six tracks and was mixed by aconito records, london and mastered by andrea merlini, utrecht.

weve been huge fans of tims work since the release of his first self-titled ep on astrolab. his analogue sound has been described as both death mulch and rare gloom. for his second work for love twelve, he continues the journey into dark spaces with four more deep synth freakers from his fish island school of synthesis studio. after releases on esteemed labels including emotional response, world unknown, bird scarer, hoga nord, rotters golf club (as the asphodells with andrew weatherall) and his own label crimes of the future which he runs with scott fraser, his debut album where is the champion? was released earlier in the year to critical acclaim. tim will continue to push forward and we feel privileged to see him return for a wfl round two.

slow town s 17th release from melbournes luis cl is an ode to analogue jams. the cran town ep shows what luis cl (one half of the zanzibar chanel duo and co-founder of ruff records) is know for: dirty but groovy drum arrangements, analogue synths and dreamy melodies and his kind of lo-fi and blurry mixdowns with definitely some detroit influences. the three tracks were recorded in one take during his studio sessions.

carl gari is a group of three from munich: jonas yamer, till funke and jonas friedlich. they released their well received and idiosyncratic debut (npr mentioned it as one of the 50 best albums in 2016) on the trilogy tapes, for which they collaborated with egyptian singer and spoken word artist abdullah miniawy. for the second release on permanent vacation they perfected their unique blend of psychedelic ingredients, dubbed out drums, drony sounds and a general hazyness. the mystic chants of abdullah, who is also featured on two tracks, weave themselves into the bands lively sound texture. apart from that carl gari showcase the diversity of their analogue driven and melodic approach to electronic music through four beautifully detailed tracks.

for house heads of a certain persuasion, dj duke is a name that resonates for all the right reasons. the u.s. veteran has been responsible for some of the 90’s most seminal moments, chiefly through tracks such as 12 minutes to do it (under his pleasure dome alias), party time and the prosumer-endorsed deep house classic, heard. he returns here courtesy of emerging imprint solo werks, who host his latest ep, green pastures. a momentous house-led workout, it compounds duke’s reputation as a producer of considerable panache while also acting as an auspicious start to life for the dublin based label. the title track is a grainy, old-school cut that bears all the hallmarks of a dusty analogue-jam and harks back to the days of vintage chicago with the sort of zest you’d expect from a man of duke’s credentials. the other original, skyscapes, is packed to the brim with industrial motifs and is characterised by the sort of effortlessly catchy baseline with which duke has made his name. mysterious and ethereal, it takes the listener on an uncompromising and throughly captivating house journey from the off. on the flip side, we have two stunning remixes, the first of which arrives from new jersey don, ruben candelario aka nicuri. a long-time favourite of nyc-based producers a la joey anderson, nicuri turns green pastures into a dreamy, acid-led space, adding layers of suspense and a glittering vocal intto the mix as he goes. last but not least are dublin-based producers slowburn, who serve up a stunning version of skyscapes. a carefully construed voyage into the deep, it caps off a fine ep with some aplomb.

the superb forbidden planet is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. it s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. the francisco remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more chicago house style cut. as such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. the masterful ali renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs cyber dance records, human shield record company and most recently his own vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. it s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. the last original is the excellent stay with me , a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.
