after being one of the many standouts on the we are opilec…! vol. iii compilation back in 2016, i-robots glamouflage is now getting a full vinyl release with artwork by tomozo kevorkian, who was designer for nyc s body & soul, and remixes by a standout team of producers from japan to switzerland to south africa and the usa. opening up the ep is a fantastic new take ii version from label boss i-robots, who added exclusive chinese vocal samples recorded on the streets of huang jiang city many years ago. the track is inspired by ennio morricone and supermax and is a loose and infectious groove with brilliant drums and percussion and an elastic bassline that really gets you moving. it s a subtle update to the original—also included here as a bonus cut—which itself is a steamy and tropical sounding groove. swiss electronic pioneer schaltkreis wassermann then features on a version of the original that reaches for the cosmos with its rugged bass riffs, tumbling toms and busy, ever evolving groove. it has a big breakdown with exotic synths wandering through the night and oodles of effects and big guitar licks. the first of the remixes comes from kuniyuki takahashi who has been a big supporter of i-robots since 2000. he is a sound designer from japan who had a compilation of his works put out by music from memory back in february. his version is laden with cosmic synths and chants, grunting and organic drums and is sure to be massive this summer thanks to its open air vibes. detroit s underrated but vital gary martin is the boss of the teknotika label and his version featuring colten decker playing an unusual sax line shows another side to the motor city. it s a curious and mysterious tune that makes for an unsettling atmosphere that keeps you locked throughout as it snakes along.

eddie fowlkes is one of detroits finest, still working doggedly to push his own distinct spin on the motor city sound. hes taking no prisoners on this latest 12inch on his own detroit wax label, bringing a tough and righteous rhythm to the foreground on give it up for my dj with some of those head spinning melodic flourishes that are his trademark. love works is a crooked groover that piles the bass on generously and keeps the swing up high if this one doesnt get bodies jerking then nothing will. no-one does it quite like fowlkes, and hes on impeccable form here.

imre kiss presents crisis 001. the budapest-based artist ushers in the next phase of the party and dj collective that has been reshaping the hungarian music landscape since its inception in early 2016. the label’s inaugural release, ad astra, represents the fruits of a collaboration that has been a long time in the making. kiss, fresh off the back of his evolutionary strangers ep on mörk, partners with compatriot norwell, who is following up a prolific 2017 – one in which helena hauff named his odd ep her favourite record of the year.

one of dortmund s finest exports, mr. fries, returns to wolf music bringing his signature sample heavy house touch back to the label. six tracks of mpc saturated cuts take the stage for wolfep045 with the hazy rhodes, rhythmic stabs and sax flutters of nocturnal opening up the e.p. sun takes things on a percussive workout before work leads you down a road of dusty detroit loops, akin to the productions of the motor city greats. on the flip you get a smokey jazz, sun-drenched roller in getright , moving into junkfoodnmusic which encapsulates that comatosed feeling its titled after down to a t - dropping the pace down into a laid back jam. closing out the ep thesimplethings driving bassline, fizzing percussion & sensual samples offer up a late night groover to round off another stellar outing from mr. fries.

the latest joint on uzuri comes from mark hand, a secret weapon of the uk house underground who has been active for a long time and now seems to be finally getting the props he deserves. his mood on -all caught up- reflects the infectious positivity of his live sets at freerotation, all mellifluous rhodes keys and classic deep house signifiers that seep into your soul. -cobwebs- is just as smooth, although it takes on a more deep-diving tone laden with transcendental chord progressions and a dash of motor city melancholy. that makes patrice scott the perfect choice to remix the track, and he takes a measured approach to simmering the component parts down for a version garnished with gorgeous piano and synth tones.

detroit love are proud to present the inaugural release on their newly founded eponymous imprint – a collaborative venture from planet e and !k7 which aims to capture the essence of carl craig’s superb event series of the same name. detroit love mixed by stacey pullen is a sixteen track journey that exemplifies the diversity of the city, as well as the essence of the parties, championing both lesser known artists and familiar faces into a 74 minute mix.

it s been a little while since we last heard from donnell knox, but he s back in action finally on his regular haunt sonic mind with some of that evergreen us techno tackle that he s forged a long and winding career out of. -no time- is steeped in the smoky pads of the motor city, with a rugged rhythm section and errant bleeps thrown in to seal the deal. -rat race- takes things in a more housey direction, but there s still a certain mysticism that reaches beyond the average club banger. -sick mind- continues the theme, but ties more knots in the programming to make for another essential slice of techno, and then -repetition- finishes the job with a razor sharp slice of sky-scraping hardware science.

long serving irish producer derek carr continues to enjoy a resurgent career following his appearances on for those that knoe, now stepping up to love notes for some of his most effervescent house jams to date. -sidewinder- is a sprightly, detroit indebted house workout pitched at peak time, while -stepping out- trips into classically informed techno for the back room crowd. -search for intelligence- is a great example of how to execute sweet natured electro, and -indigo- ditches the kicks to twirl into more of that motor city flavoured machine soul magic for the mind.

on this joint ep with reggie dokes, gari explores the world of deepness without hesitation. he takes us on an intergalactic mind trip, while keeping it true to the dancefloor. on the a side is reggie dokes, who gives us deep house, then without shame moves us into that detroit style of techno, cultivated by the motor city. mr. dokes likes to walk in both worlds of house and techno, and not confine himself to one particular genre. this ep is the perfect marriage of two creative producers, who bring excitement and inspiration to the dancefloor.

r&s newcomer karim sahraoui delivers an ep of deep, emotive techno that draws on the rich legacy of detroit while staying relevant for the modern era. sahraoui is a globetrotting seeker of musical truth spending time in malaysia, italy and spain as well as his native france, he recorded in the early 2000s to some acclaim as djinxx, releasing prolifically for delsin, cocoon, f-com bedrock, and ovum amongst others. in 2009 he took a couple of years out from the industry, travelling to malaysia to find himself. in 2011 a chance meeting reconnected sahraoui with derrick may, who he originally met in the late 90s. may was reactivating transmat and persuaded karim to let him release his music, but on the condition it be under his own name. the resulting pair of eternal life eps in 2014 and 2016 marked his rich return to form glorious melodic, contemplative techno in the classic motor city mode. his plenitude ep for r&s builds on similar positive themes - from the percolating arpeggios and mystic melodies of spy of the desert, to the anthemic jazzy techo paen of born again or the aching symphonic build of before the 2nd coming its clear that after decades in the business sahraouis talent is only growing rather than diminishing. i wanted to give it more spirituality, musicality and roots with the choice of the sounds. going back in the past and transcribe everything with visionary fusions, sahraoui explains.

having previously appeared alongside tommi vicari jr on a 12inch last year, opto mystics strike out on their own with this 12inch for italian powerhouse vibraphone. new horizon very much represents the new school approach with the long serving italian house label, keeping that deep, melodic quality but embracing new rhythms, tones and approaches. new horizon almost has an akufen quality to it, while bucky triangle could easily transmit from the motor city house scene. m.i.y.e. is a swirling blur of gorgeous synths, and -suddent- finishes the ep off on a surprisingly experimental tip.

straight up electrotechno from the westcoast of holland, name-dropping everybody and then some. comes in the electro rap vocal version, instrumental and a jacking motor dub. all on the new label den haag.

seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

norken aka metamatic releases his first ep on neo ouija. four highly sought after cuts that symbolise the norken sound at the time: deep house with the sleekness and machine melancholy of british chill-out and idm that s complimented with crisp drums which give a nod to early detroit techno. norken is best known or his releases on delsin, hydrogen dukebox and assemble music among others and there are also some upcoming eps on third ear recordings and delsin to look forward to.

as ever, the next project on opilec music is one with a rich back story this time paying homage to a very specific disco scene of the early 80s: it finds label boss i-robots turning out one of his brilliant reconstructions, namely of a classic and cult track by one hit wonders ahzz. this track was first released on land of hits, a label run by peter brown (who also wrote -material girl- for madonna) and michael campbell and has now been officially licensed for this reissue by opilec music. the track, new york s movin was huge on the new york disco scene and was played by the likes of david mancuso at the loft, larry levan at the paradise garage and by nicky siano at studio 54, but continued to be a big hit with modern new york tastemakers kenny dope, dj spinna, danny krivit and his body & soul party crew well into the 90s, as well as with stars like motor city drum ensemble and bulljun. i-robots is a notorious producer and record collector with a vast understanding of the history of house and disco and his version combines an original vocal and instrumental version into something really magical. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take i) is a jangling, organic and lose limbed disco number with a funky drum line, soul in its bones and plenty of lovably rough percussion, clicks and drums. a retro and impassioned vocal line adds flair to the track at the midpoint just before that groove kicks once more. this version is featured on the new i-robots - reconstructions 2007-2017 10th year anniversary release. new york s movin (i-robots reconstruction take ii) is then just as emotive and outgoing but after the break has more of a focus on funk. this is a huge party starting track filled with feel good vibes and once again proves opilec music work on only the most special projects.

r&s founder renaat vandepapeliere launches a new series rv trax, to reflect the sound of his dj sets. re-invigorated and inspired by contemporary dance floor sounds, after 30+ years as the label owner and figurehead renaat succumbed to the temptation to finally, at the tender age of 60, try his own hand at rocking the crowd. renaat s sets have seen him assemble a treasure trove of unreleased music that will now find a very personal home on rv trax. emblazoned with the belgian national colours of black, yellow and red these tracks proudly flaunt their floor-filling dynamics. the first, a dance floor stormer from steve legget, remixing fellow north easterners bird of paradises original a tight punchy workout that pairs distorted 909 kicks against a high tension string part and melancholic synth pads. g-prod (aka french brothers david and nicolas gaugain) provide a balmy, motor-city style number shuffling drums underpin sunrise synth washes and euphoric melodies. buenos ayres hermetics provide a frostier mood with collider - chilly fm bells pinned against serrated percussion and swirling distortion

reless return to follow up on there first official release which was entitled cycle, out on world talk records that included a bold yet hazy remix from avant techno engineer shlomo.this time their foot firmly in the the mud, is a solid 4 tracks ep entitled, circuitry merging classic techno components which they say focuses on creating analogically modified melodic organisms. the eponymous title track circuitry brings the listener into a field of near moving stabs synths, pulsing through out the persistent motor rhythm. the follow up seed germinates a melodious and deep sequence to sense growth of emotions into the listeners body. reless stand by their motto of always repeating the essential, which can be heard strikingly through out limitation bringing us toward an end of an endlessly metallic grain storage silo. to conclude, the hotly tipped swedish producer kuf (head of arsenik records) pulls apart the harshly stark limitation exploring a rework focusing on the frustrations and jittering nervous pathways of the listener speaking directly to the frontal lobe his job to reside purely at the edge of our mental limitations.

les graciés is a collaboration in the truest sense between paris-based sound artist gaël segalen and deepblak co-founder afrikan sciences. segalen’s experiments in electroacoustic sound met the wider world this year via a debut lp for erratum, an arresting work that showcases her ability to merge hypnotic murk ala angus maclise with the hard concréte of parmegiani & reibel. segalen’s ihearu imprint / organisation is a platform for her various doings, including psychogeographical audio works and multi-media collaborations, as well as servicing as a reference point for other contemporary female artists working across various mediums. eric douglas porter aka african sciences has been deconstructing and re-building forms of contemporary black music since the mid-2000’s, through releases on deepblak (the label he co-runs with aybee) and pan. his musical universe is one of warping cadences and celestial melody, referencing the bold work of percussionists like milford graves & art jenkins, the dissonant chords of motor city techno and stripped back essence of early chicago house matched with broken hard bop sentiments: all tied together with an aesthetic that sits somewhere between sun ra’s omniverse, jean giraud mœbius and dogon cosmology. together as le graciés, segalen and porter make a wholly unclassifiable strain of music that, while containing recognisable elements of each individual s work, also creates a third entity in the process, which can be heard to stunning effect on their forthcoming debut lp ‘low doses’ for firecracker recordings.

the jaunt records 10 years series shores up with the land installment featuring another four adventurous souls that have the spirit of deepest techno in their bones. stojche lets lush motor city synths lead the way on the energetic the exchange before awol gets into an intricate broken beat groove on the stunning 54.973379, 1.614705. luke hess brings some unabashed acid gurgles to the front of the mix on tdy and then deep a & biri plot a course for dubby waters with the growling tones of pilgrim.

kevin saundersons kms imprint is a label that should require no introduction. the motor city label has been a techno mainstay since its inception in 1987. numerous detroit luminaries have released classic after classic on the labels hallowed grooves over the last 25+ years and its influence is still felt in contemporary dance music today. the idea behind the kms origins series is to shine a light on the lesser known cuts in the kms vaults as well as the classics that have given the label it s legendary status during its lifetime.

yet another solid gold modern reimagining of the mighty loleatta holloway, this time her infamous 1977 smash hit & run goes under the knife and is tweaked to devastating effect by 2 of chicago s finest modern day editors - jamie 326 & cratebug. anyone with even a passing interest in disco or house will be more than familiar with these 2 guys names. having edited and remixed numerous cuts in their own original ways, they take this all-time salsoul classic and strip it right back to the essence, to the very basics, and in the process create a total dancefloor weapon. this edit originally came out a few years ago (2013) on a compilation that showcased the new wave of contemporary talent emanating from the windy city and naturally it was one of the cuts that stood out, finding favour with a wide variety of dj s across the board from motor city drum ensemble, todd terry, jeremy underground paris, theo parrish and more. drawing comparisons with paperclip people s anthemic throw from 1994 in the way it snatches a killer loop from hit & run s bassline, hit it & quit it is a monster, a record you ll literally play over and over and over again, a relentless disco juggernaut that oozes power. it made perfect sense for this legit single-sided reissue 12- to come out on salsoul records, the home of loleatta holloway s finest material and all of her classics. this limited reissue has been made in conjunction with jamie 3:26 & cratebug and salsoul records, 100% sanctioned and lovingly re-presented for your dancing pleasure. this one is hot. sleep at your peril!

dating back to the fledgling early days of the label tales from the second moon by apogee was the first of many peacefrog releases by dan curtin. as with dan’s other early releases tales from the second moon ‘s angular dancefloor groove borrowed from the original motor city blueprint with a melodic sensibility that was drenched in the kind of yearning melancholy that suggested either pain of a heartbroken lover or the brittle dislocation of someone who longed to be transported to a distant galaxy. the acid, strings and complex rhythms contained on this ep originally released in 1993 were soon to become dan’s trademark sound. limited stock available. so be quick!

just a few months after its first release, nitsa traxx comes back with a very special 12”. the project started with a file exchange between eduardo de la calle and ferenc. they decided to work each track on their own side using only a few isolated sounds from the other. this way none of the tracks could never be treated as a full original, but proper remixes of tracks that never existed, building an uncanny, almost dreamlike emotion. a side is for ferenc’s “parón largo”, where synthetic strings are omnipresent and time and space unbends, evolving to an anticlimax where an eerie vocal and the longest possible drop are the leading trademark. a never ending and emotional standstill that goes deeper than the mariana trench. eduardo de la calle uses his distinctive signature sound in the b side. “cloaking tech d fly d” is an obsessive yet beautiful track that reminds us of the somewhere in detroit series. this is a mental and heart-warming tribute to the motor city sound that just a producer like eduardo could do. next releases are on the corner already, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

nicolas bougaïeff presents his new ep on seminal british imprint novamute. as a producer he harbours a diverse musical background, having studied in a conservatoire setting whilst foraying into anti-authoritarian rave culture. he is also a respected lecturer, regularly teaching masterclasses in composition and speaking at global events such as mutek and ableton loop – the results of which come to life in the inquisitive spirit of his productions. cognitive resonance explores elements of acid, gabber and techno through a compositional lens, drawing on the artist’s love for avant-garde forms and long-standing relationship with the electronic music community. the title track lays out long, expansive phrases and warped crescendos to create a disorienting structure, whilst distant harmonies, distorted kick drums and shattering effects merge into a hypnotic form on ‘truthful hyperbole’. lastly, ‘fake news’ mangles our sense of rhythmic familiarity, disrupting the 4/4 beat with a complex metre and sinister melody. listen to the title track here. nicolas will follow this release with an album on his own denkfrabik label, ‘principles of newspeak’ is due out on the 24th of november. this is novamute’s first release since motor (bryan black and oly grasset) over ten years ago. the label, a subsidiary of mute (depeche mode, goldfrapp, new order, liars, erasure, moby), began in 1992 as a response to the growing demand for techno releases in the uk. originally presenting white labels and imports, novamute went on to release records by plastikman, speedy j, juan atkins, luke slater and joey beltram to name a few, as well as forging invaluable links with labels such as tresor and probe, which allowed them to license rare tracks for a wider audience. forthcoming releases on novamute will include eps from terence fixmer and charlotte de witte.
