multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

seasoned memory athletes will no doubt recall the turbo’s past affiliation with the former soviet union (proxy, tiga tigayevich khristorozhdestvensky), and recent geopolitical developments have prompted the label to once again hedge its bets. our a&r team spent countless hours sifting through layer after layer of russian underground music, a shocking amount of which turned out to be fake soundcloud accounts from producers based in florida. in fact, our best intelligence suggests that dimitri veimar may be the only person making music in russia today. for the 30 minutes a day he is not trading in politically moderate twitter-bot futures, veimar produces dark, raw-dog electro. he has already released music with omnidisc and renate, so it makes little sense to us why we have to communicate with him via a mole in the canadian embassy in moscow, which is further complicated by the fact that the mole is also an aspiring dj/producer whom we have to keep happy at all costs. you have no idea how much has been sacrificed in order to shield you from the realpolitik of international dance music.

new imprint ocd’s first release comes from portland native aaron carlson who, with his ac$ alias, has generated quite a buzz in underground circles of late, off the back of a few highly sought-after records. ‘do u know what u represent?’ is a slice of rolling tech-house that utilises vocal snippets amidst a flurry of 909 hats while the rhodes-laced ’more odds’ dials up the swing with a nod to early prescription releases. on the b side, ‘just like you’ is a more heady affair, seeing lazy chords sitting over a nebulous bassline and assorted weirdness, while the acid-tinged, atmospheric ‘organ morph’ is sure to find favour with fans of binh or nicolas lutz.

tenor singer johnny clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. hanging around studio one as a schoolboy with jacob miller, clarke was supposed to record material written for him by bob andy, but somehow never made the grade. his 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer glen stair was not released, and early work for clancy eccles failed to hit, though ‘everyday wondering’ for rupie edwards made an underground impact in britain and new york. subsequent singles for keith hudson and glen brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when bunny lee asked him to sing ‘none shall escape the judgement,’ which was written by the singer earl zero, it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the soul train theme), and clarke became one of lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because lee stoked a rivalry between him and cornell campbell, whom lee had previously asked to voice ‘none shall escape.’ clarke’s satisfaction lp was recorded at harry j for lee, voiced at king tubby’s studio, and issued by third world in 1979. it is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the paragons’ ‘riding for a fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘my satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘play fool, get wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of kingston.

french producer and dj john jastszebski has been involved in the french and global underground house and techno scene for over a decade now, releasing on imprints such as d’julz’ bass culture, phil weeks’ robsoul, syncrophone recordings and of course phonogramme where he returns to here. the original mix of lead track ‘season’ takes the lead via infectious stab sequences, snaking subs and raw organic percussion before kai alce’s ‘restructure’ of ‘season’ follows and tips the focus over to airy chords, jazz-tinged lead melodies and a bumpy rhythmic swing. illusion’ follows and sees jastszebski focus on a more stripped-back aesthetic with rolling drums, dusty string samples and warm rhodes driving the composition. ‘gracelend’ then closes the package with smooth, unfolding pad melodies, crunch drum sounds and a murky, hypnotic feel.

the unstoppable force that is raumakustik are back on the label with yet more top drawer tech flavoured beats. the german tech wizards draft in the incredible terry lynn on vocals for lead track dog eat cat eat mouse and the result is pure fire. her unmistakable tones laid over that raucous and underground tech house groove make for a sure-fire hit for the impending summer months. this will set alight the sun-drenched terraces as much as those darker, more underground floors therefore making it a perfect toolroom release

pascal viscardi first emerged onto the scene with a string of releases on traxx underground, followed by an acclaimed release on love notes from brooklyn. the swiss producer has a trademark sound, club friendly cuts with layers of depth and warmth. the four track ep features moody, intricate sequences with a notable jazz influence throughout. housed in full sleeve artwork with inner disco bag.

after some releases on several interesting label in the techno scene, reform make return to etruria with their strong new ep called “checkmate-, which includes two remixes from the soma talent charles fenckler and the belgian amelie lens . first original is a melodic track characterized by hypnotic synths which interchange everytime in the arrangement and also dirty and powered drums. amelie version’s express exactly her style, giving to the tracks something magic with the vocals added, making a very true and enigmatic game of chess. second original instead is dominated by a strong pad, which fill up the mix, blowing up in the break and giving an epic feeling to the ensemble. charles’s remix is techno with no excuses: raw powerful and groovy, is the perfect end for this pack, giving a much more underground touch to the release.

the newly formed hungarian pæonï music is making waves with its first outing. grema, the man behind the label and its debut release, is a well known character in budapest s underground techno and house scene. all three cuts on delays ep are for the dance floor, specifically designed to make people move. darker, dubby prophet-8 chords are reinforced by dynamic drum-sets and samples, which finely balance between the modern and traditional side of house music.

it really feels like we (aka mad mats & tooli) have been around way longer than 5 1/2 years with local talk, but it s really true what they say, time flies when you re having fun! from what started as a somewhat simple and almost primitive urge to create a small house imprint has now grown into a much bigger affair. we really tried hard to keep the label from getting stuck in any genre (remember 90s house?) and to always keep the local talk relevant, curious, diverse and with a healthy dose of underground mentality. from our very first release with bassfort s excellent moon shadow in the summer of 2011, we had a crystal clear vision of what local talk should represent...house music in any way, shape or form! over the years we released soulful, disco, jack, afro, vocal, deep, jazz, tech, latin, old school, acid, uk, berlin, new jersey, detroit and of course chicago inspired house music. if it made us bump...we put it out! this brings us up to today and about +80 releases later. we thought about how we best could sum up these first 5 1/2 years and immediately the image of blaze s classic album 25 years later popped up. besides the fact that it s an amazing album cover it also a good representation when different musical genres fuse together. it s not strictly a house album but just as well a r&b, reggae and soul album. this fusion and variation of house sounds is something that we ve tried to capture on our 5 1/2 years later compilation, split into two parts. on part 2 you ll find a high energy disco rub from parisian s3a, a truly deep and soulful vocal jam from boddhi satva & sly johnson, a deep uk garage production from smbd (aka simbad), a dark and electronic affair from toto chiavetta (yoruba) and finally a musical acid number with that magical bristol touch from newcomer marcel lune. all in all we think we got most angles covered and hopefully this album will make you spread that chalk on the dance floor and get down...local talk style

(hopefully he didn t recognize it while he was mastering it) the last schmer vinyl was dj rx-5 a taste for crap ep from the then moscow based very underground dj compass vrubell. nina kraviz thought it was so crappy she put a track from it on fabric 91: nina kraviz, so i asked alexey to make some more crap. he did it his shway and this is the result. ( ps he still has all the patterns for the rx-5 from the original release so remaster, remixes and rereleases are in schmer s future, huzzah!) bpmf the original schmer artist had nothing better to do so he kommt back and gave us this track. we love to torture the engineer so we just had to include some loops: rhizome is the alter-ego of moscow wunderkind nikita zabelin. philly based hero/victim has been victimizing soundsystems up and down the east coast with his mad live performances. the wise caucasian is a pseudonym for some super famous london based producer and label owner, or at least thats what he claimed when i picked up his bar tab.

another certified 90s hip hop anthem on 45 for the first time courtesy of 5 borough breaks. original flavour s -can i get open- was an underground smash at the time and is also notable for one of the very first times global rap star jay-z appeared on wax - classic material no doubt. as always, the b-side reveals one of the sample sources for the track, this time young holt limited s -wah wah man- providing the neck snapping drums.

pale blue is the new alias for mike simonetti, one of nycs most infamous underground producers, paired with the vocals of elizabeth wight. the duos seductive double sided ep comes home / have you walked through this night is remixed by breakthrough spanish producer pional on man power’s me me me label. have you passed through is raw and daring, its female vocal reminiscent of innovative early electro, this is a intoxicating late night anthem of leftfield electronica. its lyrics are taken from the film the thin red line, a movie about mans destruction of nature, his world and himself. come home is equally alluring with a dreamier narrative, and pionals remix is stripped back and effortless. for these two songs, the inspiration is coming out of the darkness that is inside all of us. it sounds heavy and overbearing, but dance music is the ideal music for escape. it fits perfectly into the pale blue agenda. this music was made for a small, dark crowded dance floors, with low ceilings and high hopes. humanity is bombarded with suffering and pain at every turn its almost like we thrive on it. but we deserve better. these two songs represent part of that struggle- moving towards the light. take your frustrations out on the dance floor. throw it all away for the night. the b-side is about coming out of darkness, coming home. finding euphoria in love and security in one another. feeling lost in the best way. pale blue

we are extremely happy to welcome jerome meyer aka von d in the evergrowing moonshine recordings family. von d, is renowned for his ability to fill dance floors, fuse genres and hold his own in collaborations with some of the biggest names in the underground music. with three albums and multiple eps under his belt for labels such as black acre, boka or argon, he is also recognized for featuring exclusive and unreleased dub or dubstep tunes, alongside his own music. with regular shows in europe, asia, new zealand, australia and five tours in the usa, his world fan base is testament to his skill. von d is on an increasingly prolific trajectory since last year. recent 12’s on scrub a dub and khaliphonic (zamzam), and forthcoming tunes on lion charge and moonshine have signaled his renewed focus on dubwise productions. the french producer is going back to his musical roots. he continues to evolve his style and sound, touring around and setting clubs on fire night after night.

incredible repress of rick wilhites 2004 ep on chicagos still music imprint. pure detroit beatdown house music, featuring some stellar remix and production work from the legendary delano smith too! city bar reopen live dancing is the opening track, a down-low, funk drenched late night mover that s full of soul with killer vocals from the amazingly monikered billy beemer aka bill beaver. this one s a cult track, underground house music for dancers! 2 mixes of magic water also appear on this essential 12inch, a collabo between rick and delano which is all that needs to be said really! as you can imagine this one is deep a subdued groove that slowly blooms and unfolds until you re totally locked in and it s too late! all in all, a timely reissue of a mid 2000s classic 12inch overflowing with rick wilhites unique style and flow, one of detroit’s most unsung heroes.
