a second release for londons future primitive records brings to the fore a new hand-picked selection of hard to find if not overlooked tracks from wolfgang voigt, dj guy and fernando corona, aka murcof. all of the music to feature on this four-track recast ep was previously subject to tape or cd only release. lifted from his only album as love inc., wolfgang voigt s income sits primo as the a1, holding firm 22 years after its original release. predating voigt s work as gas, its caustic chords, shimmering melodies and chilled 90bpm vibe render it a production borne from the classic dub techno blueprint of the early-to-mid 90s. an early take on slo-mo techno. the dat tapes of dj guy have again been raided, with future primitive joining a select cast of followers to rejuvenate the englishman s productions with an edit that appeared on his tape for crisis urbana. both b-side tracks botas de oro and secondary inspection theme come from murcof s one time terrestre alias, a project from the earl 2000s which fuses textural, slow-motion and minimal house sensibilities with mexican banda and norteno music aka nortec, a micro-sub-genre to come out of tijuana. loose percussion, swung drums and winding rhythms are made all the more esoteric through the subversively climactic nature of terrestre s music.

favorite recordings presents this new official album reissue of sunshine by junior byron: a real modern-soul/disco masterpiece, originally released in 1981 by canadian label formula records, and very hard to find today.
based in canada, junior byron had quite a short career as a singer and recorded only a few singles and this stunning album between 1981 and 1985. produced by andré perry and joe la greca, two famous names in the canadian music scene, sunshine is not just a one track album, but a complete whole piece of music, including some brilliants highlights such as “inch by inch”, “galaxy” or “sunshine”, which are today must-haves in many dj’s lists.
as another longtime favorite collectable piece for charles maurice, it’s a real honor and proud for favorite recordings, to finally officially reissue it for the first time on vinyl. in order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all djs and music collectors.

producer, dj and visual artist, dreams, has become a standout voice in the los angeles electronic landscape. the following he’s amassed locally is due, in part, to his own imprint, private selection, who’s focus so far has been split between releasing music and throwing events. an ethos that runs through both the his music and parties is indebted in part to house and techno, but also industrial, resulting in a mutated take on dance life forms that is becoming increasingly recognizable in his own records and dj sets. dreams’ first 12’, ‘twisted karma’, came out in 2015 via private selection. most recently, he released a record which saw light through greek imprint nous disques, and now, apron records.

penelope is the 2nd installment from the ag & john robinson ep series produced by ray west. this time around they call on the prolifc west coast wordsmith blu on the title track “penelope” where all the emcees are painting verbal pictures of their own personal dream girl, this track also features frequent collaborator dave dar. the soundscapes provided by ray west are ill collages of jazz loops, live horns, percussion sounds, vintage drum machines and more. each of these recording sessions were labeled “tea with the butcha” by the collective and it truly does describe the essence of the sounds and conversations on these recordings.

new yorks matuss returns with the eighth release on her absence seizure imprint this september, comprising three originals from the ukrainian born artist. julia matuss, better known as simply matuss has been steadily carving out a name for herself over the past decade, initially finding her feet as a prominent dj in the ukrainian scene she grew up in before a move to new york saw thing progress and the launch of her absence seizure imprint shortly followed. now eight releases deep the imprint has piqued the interested of dj s such as d julz, dj deep, derek plaslaiko, twr72 and beaner. taking the lead on the package is fairy dust setting the scene via warbling rhodes chords, raw dub sweeps and a pulsating low-end drive before a spaced out, sinuous resonant synth lead ebbs and flows throughout the focal point of the composition. baelfire follows and strips things back to raw percussive feel, employing thunderous claps, a weighty kicks and sweeping filtered sample as the foundation before the latter half of the record works in a frenzied acid-tinged hook. faramant then closes the package with an amalgamation of organic percussion, natural bass licks and glitchy percussive chimes which all subtly evolve and retract throughout.

just over a year ago cassy embarked on her largest and most personal project yet, her debut solo album donna , released on revered imprint aus music. since then, cassy has put out a string of remixes on powerplant, turbo, echoe and watergate, plus a track on muna s latest va. throughout this period, cassy has also been in the studio working on new material, the first of which to be released in september, and is titled cassy 004 . as the title infers, cassy is reawakening her self-titled imprint she created in 2006, and has had three previous releases until now. with no plan or set schedule, the remit was simply to release her own records, when the time is right, and the quality is high. the music always reflected the quirkier side to cassy s club tastes. and 004 continue in this vein. it perfectly encapsulates the sleek and hypnotic sounds of the harder end of her dj sets. the tracks are titled one and two , with cassy giving one a reshape to round off a trio of cuts aimed at the dancefloor.

charlie ahearn s 1983 film wild style holds a place in both music and cinematic history as one of the first examples of a hip-hop film. since its original release it has been widely praised for its hybrid approach as both a narrative musical and a documentary, and as a time capsule of sorts into the culture of hip-hop during its infancy in the 1980s. besides its classic depictions of mcing, turntablism, graffiti, and breakdancing, the film also featured now legendary figures of the genres in acting roles, such as grandmaster flash, fab five freddy, busy bee starski, and many more. wild style went on to garner an immense cult following, portions of the film itself would be sampled in records by artists like nas, beastie boys, mf doom, and more, and would even be exhibited by museums in chicago and boston as part of programs on the art of the 1980s.

here at quantize we simply love confounding expectations cos, guess what? we love all kinds of music and don t like to be stereotyped. but this one even surprised the hell out of us so much so that we figured it deserved a 7inch vinyl release in tribute to the original format. think (about it) was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery lyn collins. produced by the godfather of soul, james brown, it barely scraped into the rnb top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great james brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of hip-hop artists like roxanne shante and robe base and dj e-z rock. suddenly the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling and since that point, think (about it) has been sampled 1908 times and is the no.3 most-sampled record of all time. so we decided to cut a new version of it with real musicians and one of the few vocalists that would be capable of matching lyn collins firepower - dance music s diva supreme, the incredible barbara tucker. we wanted barbara to really cut loose on this and she didn t disappoint. and yes, those are real keyboards, real guitar and real horns. believe us, this session was off the scale! so when we finally got our breath back we decided we had to get this out on a 45 on its 45th anniversary! it seemed the most appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves. we believe think (about it) will have universal appeal pretty much everywhere since the song is now implanted within the dna of dance music across the world.

david mayer needs little introduction. affiliated with the flourishing keinemusik label his output as a producer and a dj over the last 9 years has been massive, forging his name as an expert in percussive precision funked up and pounding 4/4 driven deep techno and house. his recent remix of connected release ‘lust’ (tigerskin and k.e.e.n.e feat elli) was testament to his classic treatment resulting in a huge track that featured heavily on dancefloors worldwide.

emmanuel’s “rave culture” is a record that pushes the boundaries of techno to another level. “rave culture” is his first full-length on the label bringing 2x12” round of wax. ten cuts that are committed to fill a space in the rave scene that no one else has done in terms of power, experimentation, work of soul and most of all showing respect for the old-school way of doing things. this lp is his largest achievement yet and aims to showcase who he is.

it was the 23rd century, mankindÆs darkest hour. the war had been raging for almost a hundred years. we had been fighting for so long, no one could even remember the reason why it all started in the first place. for decades millions died for the same piece of rock. again and again and again. the hope was to start over, free from the prejudices that had divided us for so long. that was 800 years ago. when we came here to rebuild our lives. weÆve come a long way since then, we have grown, we have prospered, we have flourished, but we will never forget.

cult duo rework are next up on my favorite robot with a five track ep that shows off their brilliantly inventive house and tech style. the production outfit of daniel varga, michael kuebler deal in left of centre and freaky house with a mischievous afterparty slant. they have been active for more than a decade now and have credits on great labels like visionquest, items & things, meant and the institution that is playhouse. the brilliantly sleazy “talk it off” opens things up with popping drums, playful lyrics and a steely sound that is designed for wonky basement parties. “valencia” goes deeper with warm drums and synths surging along next to an elastic groove that is propped up by energetic and incendiary chord stabs. it’s a subtle but high impact track that will raise the energy levels on any floor. “think about you” has vocals coated in echo and delay and trippy synths that are lively and off kilter. it makes for a track that is brilliantly loose and undulating and cannot fail to get under your skin. final track “attractive” heads in a much more techno direction with surging drums and hypnotic slithering synths that burrow deep into your brain and seep into the night. it is trance inducing for sure, and shows another side to this accomplished outfit. this is a versatile ep stuffed with killer cuts for many different moments in the night, and each is as standout as the next.

we begin our history with the first full-length dada ques release, written and produced by the founder of the label, flaty. called 1 (one or album one), the release is timed with the launch of anwo / amonari-no-word which has been conceived and designed as a creative platform for own musical projects and various other art initiatives. album one presents a wide array of styles grinded and melted into one solid and breathing soundscape, it s electronic romanticism with advanced detail. available sept 15 2017 on heavyweight vinyl.

mister mellow moves further away from the synthesizer-heavy sounds of the recent washed out releases and more band-driven sound of his work on iconic labels sub pop in america, and domino in europe. on mister mellow, greene draws from the experimental collage techniques of musique concrète and plunderphonics artists such as the residents. combining styles as diverse as free jazz, house, hip-hop and psych together with interlude-esque voiceover samples, often pulled from anonymous youtube vlogs, he creates a busy, chaotic, and caricaturish mix that mirrors the claustrophobic, hyper-stimulated psyche so familiar to young adults. as he continues to carve out his innovative sonic identity, influenced by the world around him but unafraid to buck trends, it’s fitting that greene has partnered with legendary hip hop label stones throw records, long a home for beat-loving musical rebels. his approach to releasing music is every bit as individual, too: in an environment where compiling singles into an album format or working with a single video director are the norm, greene has chosen to commission eleven different artists to bring the visual aspect of his fully-realised album project to life. on mister mellow, washed out steers clear of emotion to empathise with the minutiae of the world around him. ive been much less interested in sentimentality and emotion for the past couple of years, says greene, in some ways, i think its a reaction against getting older and having more responsibilities. maybe i’m just nostalgic for a time in my life where i could just relax and block out the world for a moment. though mister mellow is an intensely personal album, its ideas and observations speak to the lived experience of so many young adults, an experience that we come to see as both funny and sad.

for over forty years, the apostles of aba have stood as the jewel in the crown of the music scene in eastern nigeria. since their formation in 1973, the band has turned out memorable performances in a variety of styles including rock, soul, funk, pop and reggae. even today, the apostles continue to thrill audiences in their hometown of aba with dazzling shows. cultures of soul is proud to present one of the apostlesã more obscure¨yet relentlessly funky recordings in a full-color custom reverse board jacket. banko woman, originally released on the eponymous lp on love day records in 1977. straddling the world realms of afro-funk and disco, the track has long been a coveted dance floor filler amongst djs, and for the first time is available for a wider audience. on the b-side is faith, luck & music, also from the original banko woman album.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

drumcode continues its commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge techno. with releases this year already from adam beyer, pig&dan, alan fitzpatrick, dense & pika and julian jeweil, this july sees the return of enrico sangiuliano with astral projection. after his remix of mobys of why does my heart feel so bad back in november last year, enrico sought creative inspiration from his travels, transcending that into his productions and long studio sessions during the winter months. the result brings a mind and body melting release from the italian producer. the title track astral projection is a captivating, big room techno masterpiece. deep reverberations punch alongside a sinisterly crisp percussive drive. launching into a groove laden synth modulation of low end textures, it breaks down into an ethereal amalgamation of pads and synths before the vocal launches, taking this track to another level. ‘blooming era has destructive dancefloor intent. there is no holding back with the low end synth modulation which enrico has mastered to perfection. a tightly woven percussive flare moulds flawlessly with the rolling oscillations of the beast of this track. if you have seen label head honcho adam beyer playing anywhere on the globe in the last 5 months, this has been a peak time favourite. road-tested to the max, and with much success.

since his last appearance on hemlock (2015 s double ep hek025) hodge has produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated eps and collaborations for livity sound, berceuse heroique and no corner. equally comfortable squaring up with heavyweights such as randomer and peder mannerfelt as he is maintaining a prolific solo production output, hodge has cemented himself as a leading voice in uk dance music and a champion of the elusive sweet spot where functional techno resonates with soundsystem culture. a quick listen through his recent ra mix is a great way to keep up to speed with his recent output. one for the hemlock fans who have been patiently tolerating this year s more experimental cuts. swing for the fences is straight down to business getting the kicks in below one of those ear-wormer percussive atonal toplines hodge does so well… the drop is one of the heaviest we ve heard this year and tipped to raise some fingers, open mouths and spill drinks across dancefloors and tv studios worldwide. less pool cue more pool party aomame is a breezy melodic (patio) heater powered by tough drums and intricate percussive work. arranged for both the dancers and the heads it freely refreshes and translates the main theme with a precision and playfulness that few producers can match. medway will warm up or cool out the dance with big room sirens and some rude detuned drum work. still no messing about on the b2: it s a hodge thing all the way.

hero wouters is a dutch artist who has been active since 1950. through the years he has been involved in many (music) projects. his work in the field of electronic music ranges from synthpop to experimental music. some people might know him from his collaborations with the legendary pink dots and edward ka-spel. other people might know him from his contributions to the obscure contactdisk vinyl series or his appearance on the legendary dutch ding-dong tape label. featured on this lp is work by hero wouters from 1982, 1984, and 1986. most of the material was written for a dutch film (‘een zaak van leven en dood’) and a theatre play (‘laios’). the music has been (partly) released on cassette on hero’s own label herophone. now it is for the first time available on vinyl. the music has been restored from the original tapes and mastered for vinyl with great care not to loose the original feeling. below you can find soundclips for the tracks but we feel these do not give a really good impression of the record. the music (and the record) have to be heard in total (and as a whole) to be fully experienced and appreciated. we are proud to present this beautiful and simply fantastic music by a dutch artist that deserves more attention. the wonderful cover artwork is a drawing by maaike.

luc van acker is all except an obscure musician. already from his solo records in the early 80’s he has been building a name for himself as a multi-talented musician and performer. when you are in the middle of the night, you’ll see the revolting cocks. the session on this record is from 1981 and thus a very early piece of music in the discography of luc van acker. for this occasion he has performed with live electronics, a violin and various other gadgets and tools. the music must be seen as somewhere in between old style industrial music (thus experimental) and modern classical music. this live performance takes the listener from rhythmic to the sound of the sound. the session has been tranfered from the original tape and is edited and re-mastered to make it available for a new audience. the liner notes have been written by luc van acker himself.

if you like tape hiss, heavy beats and cheeky sampling this will make you go bang! ctepeo 57 (stereo 57) are a newly formed duo. they have been around for a while and you might know them under different aliases. their obsession with 1950s culture brought them together and they own a massive collection of marlon brando memorabilia. the 1950s were a decade of mystery and hoaxes, the cold war, the space race and the establishment of nasa. ctepeo 57 insists the cold war isnt over and claim russian astronauts landed on mars in the late 90s to discover something truly amazing… it all seems far-fetched but who cares, when they make music like this.
