lake people, the man with a knack for aural subtleties, is spot-on with his first ep for uncanny valley. over the course of four tracks he showcases a quiet different approach compared to the sophisticated house music the leipzig based artist released on labels like permanent vacation or connaisseur recordings. on -break the pattern- he relies heavily on the good old boom tschak-paradigm of electro, without completely giving up his trademark sound. -level msk- combines staccato-type chords with a stuttering beat that stick in your mind. the acidic -september futuristic- with its stoic drumming has almost a krautrock feel to it. on the flipside, the playful -chords in chorus- feels like an early contender for this year s summer anthem with chords and acid lines from heaven. the ep closes with -pull off-, a perfect example for lake people s ability to compose tracks with an emotional depth.

cybordelics was founded in 1993 in stuttgart, germany. in the same year, mike s., milan zemanec and daniel varga aka cybordelics released their hit adventures of dama on sven väth’s label harthouse. the record climbed up the uk dance charts to the 2nd place. people from london to germany, especially in the legendary omen club in frankfurt, danced to their techno anthems until the late afternoon. today’s artists like ricardo villalobos, sven väth, gregor tresher, chris liebing, gerd janson or anthony rother were at the omen club when this record was played for the first time, and they still consider adventures of dama a milestone in techno history. 23 years later, the new harthouse label begins 2016 with a remix ep, featuring remixes by ricardo villalobos, butch, tuff city kids, starting a new era of the harthouse story.

a year after his last outing on the label, metamethod is back with a second ep for nightime drama. the man born simon haynes is a veteran of the scene who has worked under many different aliases and is now back at the techno frontline, creating the same sort of powerful grooves that made him so essential back in the 90s. ‘exoshift’ opens things up with a lurching, low sung beat that rocks back and forth as frazzled synths and rusty frequencies skate about up top. it’s body music that really makes a mark while ‘autofac’ then slips into more of a forward moving groove with prickly percussion and woodpecker hits all driving along a bleak techno landscape. last of all, ‘superlifter’ marries bulky, broken sounding drums with celestial pads that glow white amongst the murk and greyness of the rest for he track. it is atmospheric, grainy techno for serious heads only.

new year - new music. the label freakadelle starts the year 2017 with -superis ep- by gerald peklar - founder of the association freakadelle. the ep is a sampler from the same-titled album, which was released on reflex recordings in 2016. the tracks have been reworked particularly for the dance floor and feature precise shuffled grooves, driving basslines and a reduced but sufficient amount of sound elements. only b1 (superis5) is the odd one out, being a dreamy and spheric electronica track. apart from that, the ep impresses with hypnotic loops and pressing arrangements without flourishes.

tikita, the casablanca based label focussed on body & mind music and its fifth offering is from french artist amandra. putting out just one release a year since 2014 - all of them on ahrpe records and with one being a full length - he has fomented a deep acid, ambient and techno sound for back rooms and underground clubs everywhere.

in the midst of a busy year, full of wildly-varied accomplishments, david lieske (aka carsten jost) has surprised us all with an unannounced 11-track full-length album on dial-- his first since 2000’s “you don’t need a weatherman…” in the interim he’s kept busy curating countless releases on dial, the label he co-runs with peter “lawrence” kersten, celebrated a 15 year label anniversary with an all-encompassing 2lp/various artists

over the years, lo recordings has taken pride in exploring a wide and broad range of sounds, genres and styles. to mark 20 years of lo recordings, we are taking a fresh and bold approach with our output to further explore the accelerating and refined developments in electronic music today. this is the first of our new phase of releases, a collaborative project between the two titans mr. g and k15. ‘a learning curve’ is exactly as the title suggests, an educational experience to un- derstand each other musically and technically, and to explore new territories and schools of thought. as avid users and fans of the mpc, as well as being extremely busy, both mr. g and k15 were given the same samples dug out of the lo recordings archives to each create a track which would remotely display their techniques and methods. this was quick- ly adopted to be the theme in a series of three releases to come out throughout the year from the pair. the results come in the form of mr. g’s mesmerising ‘navigate’ and k15’s introspective ‘the guilt within’, two very individual tracks in their own rights. ‘navigate’ is instantly recognisable as the work of its creator, armed and ready to bring the dance floor to hypnotic heights. with its rough and gritty sound, driving kick & synth stabs, and hauntingly majestic keys, we are thrown into peak of the night. on the flip, ‘the guilt within’ takes a turn to more ominous terri- tories, crafting an atmosphere on the other end of the spectrum to ‘navigate’. a beautiful and delicate journey carried along by light skipping percussion, immersive sweeping pads and a puls- ing sub which all come together to take the listener deep inside themselves.

with many of the scene s key figures including riva starr, dj t, jey kermis and butch featuring this year, it s no surprise that man of the moment emanuel satie is next up with a brand new release of cavernous dancefloor groovers to ensure the label see s in 2017 on a high.

new band name, new lp, the former max graef band toured and worked on new music all year. musical progress, and the impression of not enough edge and rawness in a lot of recent music, inspired and motivated a majority of the recording. the band has grown as a unit and wrote a lot of material together this year in late night sessions. during 2 weeks of recording the new songs in the studio the goal was to try all sorts of instruments, amps and effects and be open to any combination of sounds. furthermore, they and engineer lutz fahrenkrog-petersen tried to capture and maintain the raw feeling of the live recordings using almost exclusively analog pedals and racks as well as keeping the editing of the recordings to a minimum. although bands like et cetera (wolfgang dauner), embryo or xhol have heavily infuenced max graef and his band, the result turned out very original ranging from distorted jazz-rock to experimental soul, electronic percussion workouts to free sound experiments and psychedelic rock. with some tracks being around 14 minutes long, it is better to let the music speak for itself though.

japans sauce81 follows up on his modern boogie/funk gem natural thing, with the equally infectious dance tonight. it may sound like its been hiding in a dusty crate of unheard records all these years, but it was actually recorded last year in tokyo, all vocals, instruments and production handled by the man himself. forthcoming on 7inch in feb 2017. includes dub version on the b-side. put some weight on it!

new kid felix leifur made quiet a stir with his debut release on dirt crew last year. the icelandic juggernaut comes from the striving reykjavik music scene and is working closely with the lagaffe tales guys on building a new northern house empire. since his debut hes been working hard on creating a more varied vision of his unique lo slung hip hop approach to house music. with this ep he offers six new outings that have one thing in common, very warm and moody sounds ranging from disco through jazz and hip hop. were certain that he will continue to further cement his name in the coming years and were looking forward to working with him on plenty of exciting projects. opening with eyelids, felix delivers a rough, deep and dark house cut with broken beats, warped piano loops and twisted sampling throughout. classy has a smoky jazz feeling, kept tight with clever beat programming while evolving around a catchy sax motif. our personal fav is the title track, in general, a stunning broken beat house jam, smooth and loose, with swirling keys and a funk flavoured bass. the b-side begins with midwinter, a dance floor gem on a straight up junket. its deep, forward moving and bass driven, much like his track feels like that featured on our deep love compilation in 2016. yet another highlight for us is apollo, theres not many records out there that sound quite like this, thoroughly warped and contorted, depraved strings and a hypnotising rhodes arc and strain until the bass drops and it all falls in place psychedelic beauty! he closes with mine, a dope lo fi hip hop beat that casually wraps our ears, an ice cold soul infused piece.

six years ago, claremont 56 boss paul ‘mudd’ murphy tried to track down via his dj network, former freeez band-members john rocca and andy stennett to license pink rhythm’s “melodies of love”, for one of the originals compilations. they didn’t show up on the radar.
earlier this year, however, out of the blue, stennett got in touch with murphy. for much of the last two decades, he’d been living on a remote island off orkney, but was now pursuing music again.

obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year’s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band’s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

senate are back on pacific command at last! following up their humungous debut from last year this time they’re ploughing the staggered and steppin’ bass-led uk techno vibes with some seriously raw and grimey drums. some proper electro and mad breaks aplenty too. absolute chaos, get it!

a collection of quality remixes derived from hans bouffmyhres excellent 2-part insurgency ep, released earlier this year on sleaze. its a stellar package of top drawer techno. featuring versions by pfirter, keith carnal, alex bau and a rework by hans himself. this is a big one!

following mandingos universe ii on rekids last year the label has tapped thomas melchior and larry heard for remixes. mandingo is best known as detroit producer monty luke, the founder of black catalogue whennot appearing on labels like planet e and dogmatik. echoing synths and crunchy percussion join trippy nuances and effects in melchiors otherworldly reinterpretation. meanwhile on the flip, larry heard distorts the original into a mesmerising number featuring a meandering hook and intricate melodies.

originally founded by kisk back in 2009 apparel music set out to offer something truly singular in focusing their musical output predominately on jazz whilst venturing into its integration across the landscape of electronic music at the time.with a zealous release schedule, they racked up a healthy collection of eps between 2010-2015 from artists such as delano smith, scsi-9, sarp yilmaz and the label owner himself amongst many others. now after a year-long hiatus, the label makes a return with a slick 4-track va that fans both old and new will relish. strictly limited to a pressing of 200 on 180 grams of wax, their re-launch brings with it a jazz-suffused 4-track record featuring voyeur, ivano tetelepta & eugeÌne latumeten, kisk and kerem akdag. voyeurs swinging for theo kicks things off with organic, brushed drums and a walking bass line set off to a tight, swaying rhythm. glassy rhodes keys bleed into the mix ahead of piano stabs and 909 hats that propel progress when combined with a thickened low-end. ivano tetelepta & eugeine latumeten follow up with je suis reconnaissant a bass-heavy groove that lays soulful vocal samples over filtered piano chords and loose-limbed hat patterns. kisks just u then drives a crackly drum loop through distant, flexing synth tones. arresting vocal samples then take the foreground in a rich, smokey mix before istanbuls kerem akdags closes up the package. akin to the styles of producers such as henry wu and max graef, akdags friend melds playful drum patterns with thick chord stabs and smooth vocal lines that wrap up a stellar return for apparel music.
