ilija rudman is certainly a prolific artist, regularly appearing on labels like is it balearic? and running his own imogen label to ensure he s always got an outlet for the classically informed grooves he does so well. paradigma is his third studio album, and it finds the croatian producer exploring all manner of moods both day time and nocturnal. at one moment you might be wistfully cruising down the sultry boulevards of temptations trial, only to cosy up with the comely tones of creamfields or the vibrant chords ofelastica. by and large it s a downtempo affair for private reflection, steeped in 80s glamour and produced with a crystalline perfection to add that all-important glint to your life.

imogen have stumbled across a rare gem here, presenting some previously unheard liquid funk jams from the lesser known chicago pioneer james perri. some of his jams as jimi polo are perennial classics, while his time spent in soul ii soul and elsewhere are testament to his gifts, but this particular set of recordings from the 90s have lain in wait for their time to shine. you can hear his skills as a session musician and arranger coming through in abundance on this warm, grooving, acid jazz inflected ep. 70s theme is a sparse, moody jazz funk cut, while brother beware is a smooth, sultry slice of message soul. express yourself is the truly uplifting slice of the pie, and it will chime just fine with any lovers of that classic soul ii soul sound.

most of the releases on imogen recordings to date have been from label boss ilija rudman, but this time around the disco house operation is turning to a relatively fresh proposition ourra. the alias of one simon tappenden, this time is the first dedicated release for ourra and he comes out swinging with the sultry slap-bass inflected title track boosted by a classic vocal turn from robert owens. rudman meanwhile weighs in heavy with no less than three remixes of the track on the b side, with the radiophonic mix standing out thanks to its stripped down effectiveness.

ilija rudman struts out once again on his own turf with this latest slab of sizzling discoid delectability, shaping out all manner of warm and fuzzy grooves across varying tempos and intensities. metronomia is a laid back workout, but its the bombastic funk of so much that steals the show on the a-side with its crafty construction and killer bass hooks. hibiscus theatre meanwhile ploughs deeper into the soil with its swirling pads and shimmering percussion lines, and then if you change your mind- rounds the ep off with some exemplary deep house for the more reflective souls to get down to.

the latest release on antonio zuza and ilija rudman s imogen label once again features the latter, celebrated croatian producer and also introduces andre espeut. a performer, songwriter and arranger born in london with west indian, african, french and spanish heritage, espeut was raised on a diet of musical goodness. house, rare groove, latin and disco among the musical styles that sunk into espeuts dna in his formative years, making him the perfect foil for rudman on this 12inch, in her eyes. alongside the slowed down vibe of the original version, uk house royalty charles webster gets the call to turn in a superb remix for the djs!

a side brings rudman s finest house sounds for this heavy dancefloor produced track, but in the same time moody and balearic with a strong synth bassline that easely took control of the vibe and transformed it to a strong dance effect. for the b side imogen meets nunorthern soul artist dos palos with a slower tempo track with ilija rudman s instrumental stripped down mix of the lady of the west way. this remix sounds and could easily be integrated in any motion picture end having that powerful vibe of goodbye.

the imogen label launched back in september with a pair of ilija rudman remixes of london acid jazz favourite brand new heavies. this second release sees them change tack somewhat, adopting an archival focus to dig out two tracks by croatian hero ilan kabiljo. known mostly for his 90s work, kabiljo comes from legendary croatian music stock - his father was composer and musician alfons alfi kabiljo. this expression 12inch sees imogen dig through the ilan archives for two rare and unreleased tracks records in 1990, with a side cut cool nights a supple midnight saunter through jazz funk that highlights kabiljo s compositional class. golden days is just as good as sounds like a loving homage to the 80s.
