for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music � a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre � benga � this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.

indianizer was born in 2013, springing from the minds of psychonauts drawing inspiration from animal collective s wild frenzies and django django s tropical rhythms. following two self-produced eps (-pandas-, 2013 and -jungle beatnik-, 2014), their first full-length -neon hawaii- (edison box/pbp, 2015) was released in 2015. thanks to this debut album, chosen as one of the top 50 records of the year by noisey, the band toured italy and europe. -zenith- is the second full-length produced by the band together with edison box, musica altra and bordello a parigi which will be out on the 27th of march 2018: -a psychedelic texture, ancestral, made possible by vortical bass lines and cosmic patterns. an extraterrestrial cumbia in essence- (rolling stone).

another fierce and unique act from the depths of the glasgow underground appear on optimo music with their debut green door studios recorded four track ep. keyboard player jim mckinven was previously in altered images, worked for many years in martin rushent s genetic studios, was in one dove and previously appeared on optimo music as one half of organs of love. he is however but one component of this transgenerational band. they describe their music far better than we could - �seedy electronica, consisting of 2 basses, electronic drums, synths and dark vocals. inspired by the avant-garde that influenced the electronic music scene of the late 70�s and early 80�s.�

one of australia�s most dynamic up & coming acts acts, the goods have become vital members of sydney�s rising soul/electronic scene in just a few short years. with word spreading internationally and the band recently joining forces with brooklyn-based label bastard jazz recordings, the goods are gearing up to release their hotly anticipated make your move ep as they put the finishing touches on their debut album out later this year.

rather than rely on their usual full band, live performance, one-room live single recording session, the making of �dragonz� was a departure for the apples. a multi-studio project spanning three continents, they assembled new instrumental tracks based on loops created in the studio and presented them to a wide-ranging selection of vocal collaborators to complete the picture with, and applied this method to the capturing of longstanding live favourites as well. the concept of a �vocal album� was implemented on non-vocalist songs as well, treating the omnipresent turntables� sample work not as the central element to the band, but rather its frontman. though containing disparate influences, guests and production methods, �dragonz� is undeniably apples, might be their most focused lp to date, and it is certainly their most middle-eastern. elements of the region�s indigenous genres have always been present in the band�s work, but never has their influence been as pronounced.

hell yeahs next project is to revisit a collection of jazz covers of dance classics. back to new roots (serotonin fuelled jazz covers) was first released in 2011 by 3io, a band lead by double bassist manuel moretti and including richard maggioni on piano and matteo giordani on drums. they were veterans on the italian jazz circuit and put out a couple albums, but they are no more

brazilian girls return in 2018 with let�s make love, their first album since 2008. formed in 2003, the group�sabina sciubba (lead vocals, electronics), jesse murphy (bass, vocals), didi gutman (keyboards, vocals), aaron johnston (drums, percussion, vocals)�was born after the four members crossed paths at east village club nublu. �somehow we all ended up at nublu on a sunday and it all came together,� says johnston. the band began playing nublu weekly, embracing a free-form ethos that helped shape their kaleidoscopic sound. �a lot of the spirit of the band comes from being so open to improvise like that,� says murphy. fast earning attention for their euphoric live show�and winning fans like zach galifianakis, who later cast sciubba as a regular on baskets�brazilian girls released their self-titled debut in 2005 and sophomore album talk to la bomb in 2006.

great return of the classic and pioneer band of the french funk scene! after a long absence, malka family reformed, burned some scenes and composed a new album without changing anything to its magic formula. recomposed with almost all original musicians, they come back today with a new album, le retour du kif. at the heart of a still popular and multicultural marais area in paris, young musicians gather to jam. this is where malka family is formed. their first self-produced album, malka on the beach, was released in 1991, and gigs were immediately chaining up all over france and europe, famous for their eccentric costumed performance and after-parties. in 1992, warner france signs them for a second album tous des oufs, a real p-funk space opera with guests such as sidney, dee nasty, marco prince (fff), or juan rozoff. they will then traveled france, switzerland, italy, holland, denmark, namibia, japan ... and in 1994, the band becomes independent again and records an ep for big cheese records, titled fricassee de funk. after a final tour for the third album, fotoukonkass (bmg) recorded with renaud létang the band finally broke up. at a time when daft punk is using funk artists to support their performance, when bruno mars & mark ronsons uptown funk continues to make the crowds dance, it s time for the original funkateers families to come back and teach a lesson to new generations. after the band reformed and started touring again since 2015, they quickly decided to record a new album and to leave on the roads again

�music of the stars� and �music to get lost to� are words thoughts expressed about tross� music. the band have always had the ability to place the listener in a bubble of introspection and escapism.. in the most positive way! hence such opinions.

fireplays (also spelled -fireplais- on second single) was the moniker chosen in 1981 by italian producer franco pagliaccia foran instant-band project composed by him and a few other musicians. -allein- b/w -hormone- was released in mid-1982, and as can be clearly heard, both tracks clearly show the mutation disco as a genre, started having at the very beginning of the 80s in europe: ablend of electro disco, along with new-wavish elements and some classic era-blueprint sonic elements: synth driven melodies, filtered vocodered choruses, pads, swirling cosmic sounds, cowbells, all topped by a powerful male voice that will give genuineconnoisseurs an exact zeitgeist, along with assured goosebumps.

fires of quidel is the culmination of son swaggas first year as a band, a year spent refining their music, building connections as bandmembers and friends, and finally recording at greenfield studios with analog gear to bring their sound to life. with this album son swagga present themselves to the world and showcase the passion they bring to music as well as the individual talents of the bandmembers.

this is essential tremor�s second and final album of all time. the band broke up after the recording of this record but still managed to play one final show before fully breaking up. the show was one of the most brutal things nashville, tn has ever witnessed and lead singer cole k was banished from nashville forever following the performance. essential tremor�s work never quite fit in with the rest of what was occurring in nashville around the time these tracks were recorded, but we re sure that this tape will fit right in with the rest of your collection.

second instalment by music mania reprise gives belgian 80s synth classic crocodile tears a new life. music mania is proud to present the next instalment in their reprise series. following the highly sought after classic elle et moi (mmr001), comes the blissful belgian synth pop anthem �crocodile tears� (mmr002). the track was one of the first singles of kuruki, the minimal wave project spearheaded by ghent-based musician gerry d haeyer and alain bureau (sally joy). in an age of electronic sequenced experimentation, the band managed to find a distinctive sound that easily puts them between the likes of telex. the original ep such a liar was released in 1981 and clearly echoes the new wave of its time. the scenes described by vocalist sally joy as well as the melancholic keys of the main track crocodile tears breathe tristesse. nevertheless, it has a playful sound full of catchy synths. a dualism between such beauty and melancholy: this track was undeniably made in belgium in the eighties, but should also appeal to lovers of italo disco. be aware: for their second reprise music mania managed to include an exclusive instrumental version of this belgitude. even more synths for your listening pleasure.

ghent based pianotrio steiger have earned their place in the ever growing peloton of young belgian jazz innovators. as a result, they won the young jazztalent price at the 2017 gent jazz festival. with their luscious and rigid grooves in minimalistic framing, they cose themselves between schntzl and de beren gieren, likewise minded young beljazzbands that don�t take it so closely with traditions. they play jazz with a rock�n�roll attitude. sdban ultra is very pleased to present a sampler of their debut album �and above all� on a limited 10� vinyl for record store day 2018. this release marks their introduction on sdban ultra, their sophomore album is expected next fall. �and above all� houses both jazz and modern compositions, avant-garde and experimental electronics. steiger takes inspiration from jazz and refers to the traditions but equally pulls those apart, for example in the chaotic miniature bachfag and in the intimate inverse/reverse . with berlin revisited the band clearly chooses electronic instrumentation. it is reminiscent of the electronic jazz of the noughties: bands like triosk, sofa surfers and flanger did not so much work towards jazz but used the genre as a stepping stone to dive into the cosmos. steiger are launching themselves into infinity on this track with a pounding beat, shrill cymbals, overdriven keys and an unwieldy bass.

ghent bassed saxophonist mattias de craene (mdc) has caused a stir in the past few years as frontman of jazz rock sensation nordmann. after their second place at humo s rock rally in 2014, nordmann became one of the most exciting bands in the new golden class of belgian jazz groups. 2018 sees mattias fronting his own project mdciii. flanked by two special drummers - simon segers (de beren gieren / black flower / absynthe minded) and lennert jacobs (the germans / hong kong dong), he takes you on a slightly intoxicating musical trip balancing between psychedelic rock, tribal rhythms and energetic free jazz. the band will release their debut album in october 2018. in the meantime they drop a self-titled ep as a teaser. with two tracks of both over 8 minutes, the listener can acquaint the unique musical melting pot of mdciii. for one of the tracks singer sylvie kreusch (warhaus) was recruited and she makes an almost hypnotic contribution.

�she is my woman� is murphy william�s loose, funky and spontaneous call to the dance floor. it�s an infectious collection of good-time tunes that the band seem to be enjoying as much as the listener.

�pat thomas introduces marijata� is a seminal ghanian album that fuses highlife, reggae, folk, funk and soul, from legendary vocalist pat thomas. originally released in 1976 on gapophone records. �marijata� was a group made up of three members � kofi �electric� addison on drums, bob fischlan on organ and nat osmanu on guitar, hailing from ghana. pat thomas career began in 1969 with the �broadway dance band�, leaving a year later to join the �uhuru dance band�. he then played with ebo taylor�s �blue monks� and finally formed the �sweet beans� in 1973 where he really made his name. the group released �false lover� in 1974, split and then reformed as marijata, releasing �marijata� (also available on mr bongo) and this album, �pat thomas introduces marijata�. thomas career spans more than 50 years and he still tours regularly across the world. replica original artwork, official mr bongo reissue. licensed from gapophone records courtesy of george prah.

get on down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with james brown�s famed 70s funk label people records. as the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined james brown�s backing band, the j.b.�s, gave way to the rise of disco music. fred wesley and his collective of musicians couldn�t resist the chance to make their mark, releasing �hustle with speed� in 1975, with charles bobbit and don love producing, and the godfather himself, james brown co-writing and providing arrangements. �hustle with speed� didn�t cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring the j.b.�s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. all the while there�s still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, from the brass blow-out jam �here we come, here we go, here we are�, to the trombone-heavy �all aboard the funky soul train�, to the powerhouse opening salvo that is �(it�s not the express) it�s the jbs monaurail�. songs from �hustle with speed� would take on lives of their own decades after the album�s release, through sampled appearances in tracks by jay-z, nas, eric b. & rakim, ultramagnetic mcs, epmd, and many more.

san francisco in the late 1960. the hotbed of psychedelic and rock culture. the dead, joplin, jefferson airplane and a host of others all gaining mainstream acceptance for their acid tinged work. but the city and the surrounding bay area had so much more going for them. a liberal political outlook and a large african american and latino population, meant that musical and cultural reference points were wider and more easily assimilated there than (almost) anywhere else in the united states. two of the biggest groups to emerge from this scene were santana and sly and the family stone, with their melting pots of sound that took in jazz, soul, rock and latin influence. for a while they were two of the biggest acts in the united states and scores of local bands tried to follow in their footsteps. they were hard acts to follow and very few got to the stage of making a 45, never mind a whole lp. one of the best to do just that were leon�s creation, whose debut lp �this is the beginning� acid jazz are reissuing here. a native of san francisco leon patillo led the group, whose multi racial line-up echoed that of his heroes on the local scene. self contained and gigging locally they made their debut album at the tiny studio 10 who also custom pressed the album in extremely limited numbers the music is a perfect blend of acid soul, mixed with hippie sentiments that will get you dancing on the uptempo numbers such as the title track, �back roads� � with its glorious harmonies and the soaring �power�. more thoughtful numbers such as �until you were gone� or �love� will touch your soul. so impressed was carlos santana that he eventually asked leon to join his band.
