this october will see canada’s mathew jonson join forces with visionquest co-founder ryan crosson for a two track ep in the shape of ‘robots of dawn’.
canada’s mathew jonson has quite the impressive career under his belt having co-founded the revered wagon repair label and heading up itiswhatitis recordings as well as performing under his own name and various guises such as cobblestone jazz, the modern deep left quarted, and his new project units & measurements alongside hreno and the mole. here we see the synth aficionado joining forces with visionquest’s very own ryan crosson, who’s carved out an equally impressive career to date and will soon drop his second long player alongside cesar merveille focused on intricately musicality and an intriguing approach to electronic music via the visionquest imprint.
as you’d expect from such a pairing this collaboration packs a bunch, opening with ‘tempelhof’ named after the now defunct airport in berlin and laid out over thirteen minutes of gradually unfolding and retracting acid swells, resonant synth whirrs, mind bending arpeggios and dynamic, baroquely evolving rhythms.

over the last fifty years few musicians or performers have created as monumental and uncompromising a body of work as that of keiji haino. through a vast number of recordings and performances haino has staked out a ground all his own creating a language of unparalleled intensity that defies any simple classification. for all this, his 1981 debut album watashi dake? has remained enigmatic. originally released in a small edition by the legendary pinakotheca label, the album was heard by only a select few in japan and far fewer overseas. original vinyl copies became impossibly rare and highly sought after the world over. watashi dake? presents a haunting vision stark vocals, whispered and screamed, punctuate dark silences. intricate and sharp guitar figures interweave, repeat and stretch, trance-like, emerging from dark recesses. written and composed on the spot haino’s vision is one of deep spiritual depths that distantly evokes 1920s blues and medieval music yet is unlike anything ever committed to record before or since. coupled with starkly minimal packaging featuring the now iconic cover photographs by legendary photog rapher gin satoh, the album is a startling and fully realized artistic statement.

visions congo is yet another moniker from discrepant’s head honcho, goncalo f cardoso, taking africa as a starting point to evoke the memories and re-imagined experiences of his 6-month stay there in 2015.
most of the recordings and compositions were done in the great lakes of africa region of uganda, congo (drc), tanzania as well as the island of zanzibar.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

burgeoning dj and producer bontan makes his debut on the notorious hot creations label. hotly anticipated, the release features two original cuts to fuel his rising profile. uk based bontan has been using title track the first time as his secret weapon for the last six months and is now finally unleashing it. “i’ve been testing it and tweaking it play by play!’ he explains. ‘the vocal compliments the rolling bass melody and gives it a darker edge”. this a producer who fully understands how to create a track for a heaving dancefloor. personal question is the second cut and flips the mood entirely with a twisted vocal entwined in beeps and percussion, whilst stirring the sentiments of lost early hours. a firm favourite in the underground scene, he has built a solid reputation with releases on circus recordings, 20/20 vision, and cajual among others.

roman flügel and andrew weatherall supply two outstanding remixes of phil kieran recent album ‘blinded by the sun’, which david holmes claimed is “one of the best electronic dance inspired records in recent times.” mixmag described phil kieran as “one of those producers that impresses with every release” so it comes as no surprise that two music heavyweights have jumped on board for remix duty. kieran accounts flügel and weatherall to both having a heavy influence on his career. german dj and producer roman flügel is easily one of the most revered names in the dance music spectrum. his take on ‘no life’ is a masterclass in production. flügel has created a track that is powerful whilst also superbly intricate. flügel holds over twenty years of experience, extensively releasing on a number of labels whilst also co-founding ongaku, klang and playhouse recordings. uk born dj and producer maestro andrew weatherall remixes ‘finds love’ and reminds the listener of how beautiful electronic music can be. combining cosmic layers with the ethereal vocal, this is a lesson in what a remix means. weatherall has been experimenting with techno since the 90s, and well regarded as one of the world’s most influential djs. kieran created a ten track narrative in ‘blinded by the sun’, inspired by his experiences in the industry. it was met with high acclaim globally and this remix package further imprints his vision on pioneering imprint hot creations.

the visionary musician and record producer augustus pablo made some of the most unique and individual recordings in the history of reggae. as with his friend and mentor, jackie mittoo, the man born horace swaby was of mixed indian and african heritage, and although his middleclass background might have pointed him in a very different direction, the lure of jamaica’s sound system culture captured him at a young age, particularly after debilitating health problems saw him drop out of school. he began recording as a session keyboardist as the 60s gave way to the 70s, but everything changed when a schoolfriend introduced him to the melodica, a small plastic keyboard operated by a mouthpiece, which he used on seminal recordings for producer herman chin-loy, credited to augustus pablo on release. during the early 1970s, pablo crafted melodica instrumentals for all of the leading reggae producers, scoring ‘best instrumental’ for ‘java’ in 1973, and launching the rockers label to showcase self-produced work at the same time. this multifaceted compilation, first issued on bunny lee’s attack label in 2005, compiles memorable melodica interpretations of some of lee’s greatest productions, recorded over dub cuts of immortal numbers such as cornell campbell’s ‘queen of the minstrel’ and john holt’s ‘my desire.’ reissued on lp and cd with bonus tracks!

tomahawk records is a new label that resists genres and hones in on the curation and sound of new artists. the label is keen to push undiscovered artists out into the periphery and give them the support to help grow as individuals.
the first release which is just round the corner is by the australian duo anthony fade, two hidden gems found on soundcloud. their process is a simple combination of hardware and software instruments and heavy use of ambient recordings and various samples. the ep titled “like that” contains four tracks of late summer vibes, dreamy vocals and a massive dose of energy getting ready for winter.

for nearly a decade, raíz and subversive have distributed their vision of dance music on various labels including historia y violencia, electric deluxe, construct reform, droid recordings and their own imprint vrv. three years into the vrv project, the label heads have decided it is time to expand the roster and showcase artists on a similar plane, producers they know can speak to the sound. the chosen interpreters on this release include drumcell & truncate as cell injection, and silent servant. silent servant remixes raíz’s cored 3 the former sandwell district and current jealous god co-conspirator steps up with a stark composition in which melodic arpeggiation builds over industrial drones and echoing drums. the mix of sound reaches a clear peak, then segues into a calm that’s expertly tooled for mixing. drumcell and truncate remix raíz’s cored 2 droid behavior’s best-known producers take up their cell injection collaboration to hollow out raíz’s “cored 2” for a driving roller with eerie pads and a darker sensibility. subversive remixes raíz’s cored 4 subversive breathes another level of funk into the original, with clanging percussion and a new melodic motif.

spain s javi bora has been steadily carving out a name for himself over the past few years holding up a residency at the infamous, now late space ibiza and its kehakuma parties, as well as racking up releases for elrow music, suara, robsoul, 2020 vision and moda black. here though we see him paired with fellow spaniard for a new ep set to be released via london s fledgling spilt milk recordings which has played host to material from the likes of italoboyz, alexi delano and of course its founders tred benedict and st. bernard. title-track bounze takes the lead on the record, laying the foundations with snaking synth sequences, voice atmospherics and robust rhythms before hector moralez and katal step in on the remix. the pair reshape bounze with their own stripped-back distinctive style, opting for floating pads, heavily swung percussion and snippets from the originals spoken parts. ritual rights follows and lays focus on arpeggio 303 tinged bass hits, crunchy drums and subtly unfolding synth leads that ebb and flow throughout the record. the 002 then rounds out the package with dubby stab sequences, soaring pad swells and gritty, energetic rhythms

wolfgang voigt is a man of many means and monickers, having engendered a unique take on electronic expressionism across multiple media - from riotous early 90s acid to cyber-folkloristic techno or the abstract drama of his current rückckverzauberung project, a pioneering vision to be found on vinyl, canvas or flickering screens. ranking among of the most dense, hypnotic, atmospheric recordings in his oeuvre, the gas releases have since become internationally recognized classics with a cult following, hailed as a wondrous high point in the history of electronic music (pitchfork) and some of the most influential albums of the 90s (the guardian).

zeal....enthusiastic devotion to a cause, ideal, or goal. in our case devotion to deep, dubby, warm mirco grooves. the label s first release comes from monsieur georget which is an alternative alias for well-known french producer chris carrier, who many will recognise from his own label adult only records, along with releases on other labels including robsoul, one records, off recordings and silver network. the release also features a remix from stellar german artist dewalta, who along with a number of seminal releases on meander, is a regular collaborator with mike shannon and boasts releases on other labels including vakant, haunt and visionquest.

timmy ps latest outing on dessous recordings continues the long list of illustrious labels that have been home to his house vision. now based in london, timmy has a string of emphatic releases under his belt, not least on influential imprints such as local talk, extended play, dirt crew and madtech. with safety first, timmys playful approach to the deeper side of house shines though. the title track mixes crisp, crunchy drums with warm, soft pads and a bubbling bass line - a deep rolling cut with plenty of punch for the floor. the fantastically named grim fandango is a little tougher, with the snares and claps snapping tightly over a taut, un-resistible vibe. timmys balance of dynamics is masterful, each element perfectly complimenting each other to create a tour de force over 8 minutes. bosh is similarly crafted - the original echoing classic 90s house but feeling completely fresh for 2016, while james dexters remix is a robust, deep roller. this is house music made with joy and passion.
