following the first chapter of andy mac sdiving birdseries, idle hands welcomes italian producer piezo into the fold with an ep that harks back to the smoky, dubwise ambience of some of the label s earliest releases. luca mucci was a bristol resident for a few years before returning to his native milan, carving out an identity for his piezo alias with a slew of dubstep-focused eps on labels such as artikal music and subaltern. while on an idle hands skirmish stateside and playing on ny radio, one of the kelly twins dropped lume and remarked on how idle it sounded, sparking the process that led to this record. you can sense a link the early kowton records on ep opener opeq, all monochromatic textures and taut, slow-stalking rhythms, but here those facets are interspersed with a unique melodic elegance that offsets the moody immersion of the track, eventually blooming out into an effervescent slice of slow-motion house music. novemiluano meanwhile displays muccis capabilities in handling broken beats, exercising a devastating restraint without compromising on presence or energy in crafting a stunning piece of meditative soundsystem music. pushing that foundational dub principle of space and minimalism even further, lume closes the record out in stunning style with an intimate, glacial stepper that champions minute detail as much as looming gaps in the sound. with a peppering of micro sampling atop a deathly bassweight march, its a finely pointed arrow aimed right at the heart of idle hands, and we couldn t be happier to be releasing it.

reissue of this very rare gospel/disco masterpiece, originally released at only 1000 private-press copies, and surprisingly unknown and underrated until today. calvin bernard rhone, a native of los angeles, has been ministering in word and song for more than 40 years throughout the us and abroad. he acknowledges that he is passionate about music, yet purposed for ministry. beginning his professional singing career at age eight, he has shared the stage with possibly every major gospel artist from the 60’s to present. in 1983, he released the album intimate friends on his own label, c.b.r. records. recently discovered by dj and collector charles maurice, the lp has never received the attention and fame it deserves. it was anyway obvious for the dj and favorite recordings, that some of the tracks it includes would for sure become real classics for all disco and funk music lovers and deejays. officially licensed to calvin b. rhone himself, its today reissued for the first time, as a 3 tracks vinyl single.

following on from the soul-drenched disco excursions of ross from friends’ debut ep, newcomer rgl’s ‘1 thing’ ep spans 3 dusty deep house cuts built from the ground up to do the dance-floor damage. rgl is the moniker of tokyo based producer rigly chang, who’s also part of the tokyo based cosmopolyphonic collective. his affinity for intimate dance music brings soft textures and moods that stretch into the listener, bringing a new kind of warmth to the club.

in today’s increasingly barren rock and roll landscape, ulan bator stand as beacons of explorative songwriting. formed in paris in 1993 by amaury cambuzat (vocals, guitar and keyboards) and olivier manchion (bass), the band’s atmospheric approach to composition has consistently yielded guitar-driven avant-rock at once hypnotic and untamed. and while their sound has developed in a variety of directions – often in relationship to changing line-ups and various collaborations, including with krautrock legends faust and swans michael gira – ulan bator’s resist simple categorization: kraut-y repetition, post-rock guitar flourishes, kosmische synth work, intimate whispering and pounding drums have all taken an audible lead throughout their now twenty-year career.

first word enters 2017 with a bang: a 28-track album courtesy of eric lau. this, his third instrumental album, is a veritable tapestry of vibes, ranging through hip hop, soul, jazz, funk & brazilian beats. a mere taste into the genius production skills of london’s mr. lau, it’s easy to understand why he’s so revered by djs, artists and producers across the world, including rich medina, 9th wonder, bobbito, dam funk, gilles peterson, james poyser (the roots), phonte and ali shaheed muhammad (a tribe called quest), amongst others.

marc antona has been always in the pursuit of new expressions within music as he has continually demonstrated with his work. following the jazz-infused adventures of the rattle snaps ep, he finally returns to his own turf to lay down another crucial exploration of beat science. hanging gardens is a masterclass in immersive programming, fusing the natural feel of live drums with crisp electronic tones that hover in a spacious mix. its the perfect angle at which to appreciate the subtlety of sound design that goes into every inch of marc antonas productions, teasing elements in and out of the mix so gracefully, its hard to tell where the joints are. the haunting touches of chords and lingering pad are deployed with poise, the intricate percussion progressively rising and falling throughout to create a truly immersive sonic journey. where the a side deals with angular rhythms and a shape-shifting atmosphere, unrestricted takes the sound palette of organic and electronic elements and feeds them into a rolling, technominded focus. the tribal thrum of the beat fills out an in-the room-ambience while the psychoactive synth flurries speak out the pulse of the machines. its a combination that makes unrestricted as intimate as it is exotic. in combining these disparate feelings within his tracks, antona once again brings a human feel to the technology, pushing the music into exciting new realms in the process.

ondon-based duo jamka return with inter alia, the latest evidence of their patient, intimate relationship with their analogue machines. from the start there’s a sense of event – we encounter clear, interlaced electronic textures, powerful analogue drones and well-placed beats. the tracks aren’t soundscapes so much as fertile electronic soundfields. patemp continuously expands in an incredibly subtle but powerful way and shows that jamka’s technical skills don’t preclude an emotional touch. on the tight and minimal anazmo, the coiled energy bears traces of minimal techno and radical electronica, but it’s beyond either of these. while the album passes quickly, it’s full of detail and the thoughtfulness and craft that have gone into it are evident. dwa offers the chance to appreciate the flow and the sheen of its analogue textures – the modernist romance of the power line hum and its promise of technological-cultural progress. jamka are known for their dynamic live performances and this energy is almost tangible on derazor. the stately igora is a strong, bold close to the album, offering surprises right till the end. the sharp, metallic details ripple through the mix and an anthemic sequence shines through. inter alia makes clear that jamka are worthy inheritors of slovakia’s proud late modernist traditions of radical architecture and electronic music. this is a work of craft that demands respect and repeated listening.

long awaited repress of this amazing masterpiece as very limited white vinyl edition. what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. ‘black light’ sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.

after almost two years “things from the basement” are back with another very patient contribution for kann. next to their very intimate and minimalist original jams the 6 tracker includes three different dancefloor focused remix approaches from sevensol, map,ache & polo. the label’s final record of 2016 consists of a wide ranging musical package, all tracks are sorted by genres but unified in the same vibe.

lucid dreams already appeared on lobster theremin’s rinsefm takeover, showcasing a gritty and cavernous aesthetic. warm zone is faster and sharper, hats and claps slicing through a dense mid-range until the track suddenly opens out halfway through. feelings (original) is a melodic beatdown for open landscape and clear skies, one for morning, noon or night. bringing the release home is non other than route 8, who delivers a stripped back, dubby and super infectious rework of feelings thats gonna have everyone hugging on the dance floor.

rothmans are back with their first release of 2016 and who better to bring in the new year than italian electropsycho s dj rocca & daniele baldelli. of course this record would have to pay homage to an italian great and who better than 1982 world cup hero marco tardelli. first up on the ep is a synth funk journey called kratos. rocca goes full on here and doesent hold back as he takes us on a journey of synth wizardry and classic italo beats. up next is an another original from rocca called fonk 400 another track that could have been plucked starigt out of the golden age of italo disco, again rocca is pulling no punches here. the ep is rounded off in spectacular fashion, just like marco tardellis famous world cup final celebration we have nothing short of genius with daniele badlellis electropsychomix of kratos. baldellie doing what he does best and taking us too another level yet again.

sebastian maschat a.k.a. stoneage kid has been around in the house music scene for about 15 years now: cult stoner house with extra produktionen , drummer in erlend oye s whitest boy alive and numerous other projects. stoneage kid is an hardware / mpc based act, with own vocals and a very distinctive electro pop aesthetique. his first ep on smile for a while creally sounds like captain comatose meeting isolee in some purple haze panic room. you ll find melancholic drum machine jams, some serious synths, lotsa vocoder and a lot of bassline-bumping. phillip lauer delivers a refreshingly cheesy remix with god singing solo and the holy ghost on drums just as expected. hang on to a dream is quite a special tune, written and sung by german indie veteran otto von bismarck. this remix version is really something for intimate connoiseurs of both pop and house music.

early september will see jorge savoretti release his river plate ep via visionquests special edition imprint, comprising three original compositions from the argentinian artist. having been involved in electronic music as a dj for over two decades now jorge savoretti is firmly cemented as one of the argentinas finest electronic music exports, starting from his humble beginnings in rosario he has gone on to release material with esperanza, claque musique and igloo-rec as well as touring the globe throughout. here we see jorge mark his debut for the visionquest special edition imprint with a new three tracker and taking the lead is title track river plate, radiantly showcasing savorettis dub-infused percussive led style with choppy swinging drums, ethereal pad swells a snaking sub groove and dub chords which ebb and flow throughout. following is parana high which takes a more refined, low-slung approach via soft chord flutters, bright stab sequences and bumpy sub hits while a shuffled percussive drive further fuels the groove. last up to complete the package is u-fonk which delves into darker territories with mind- bending glitch synths, robust rhythms and a vacillating bass lead running throughout its six minute duration.

aus music ready a double vinyl remix package from cassys debut album, donna which came out in june 2016. with donna we hear a more personal side of cassy. co-produced by her soul brother king britt, cassy reconnects with her vocal talentwriting lyrics and singing on all tracks but one, making the album an intimate journey from the soul. cassy has en-listed some of her most respected peers, all of whom have put their own stamp on the original tracks. this makes the remix package the perfect contrast to the album, and also proves that cassys original music has the seal of approval from some of the finest house and techno heavyweights on the circuit today. marcel dettmann adds an endearing edge to move move, whilst ron bacardi picks up an undeniable pace on all i do. feel is taken on a cosmic journey with onsulade’s yoruba, and radio slave gives keep trying the remix treatment twice. finally keep trying is reworked on by friend & collaborator, djulz, julz takes takes things down a subtle, dubbier route with his edit, keeping cassys vocals a staple throughout.

testarossa is third studio album by brinstaar. he says that this album is dedicated to redheaded blue-skinned goddess. this work is reflecting brinstaar’s deep and emotional chase for the elusive moment of infinite bliss that keeps him alive and conscious.
while using mainly processed guitars for infotswetock and synths for mielisss, brinstaar uses a lot of acoustic instruments and field recorded sounds in testarossa now, thus creates much more intimate compositions. of course, his specialty mesmerizing synth parts and precisely constructed guitar timbres are still here too.

the aim of „métamorphose“ is to offer a voyage to the listener. the pieces really often start quite dark and then the mood turns into something intimate to catch the audience from the deeper spheres. sometimes it goes the other way as well: the track starts in a happy way and turns into a deeper vibe. by doing so the listener should notice his own feelings and try to completely let himself go. further he should be aware of his emotions: on the one hand the happy and melancholic and on the other hand the dark and rather monotonous side. in addition to the musical part to each track there is a specific artwork which was made while listening to the tracks and is based on the emotional expressions which were triggered by the sounds.

terrific record! eight charged, intimate meditations by julie normal and olivier demeaux, playing a rickety ondes martenot and an old church harmonium. gripping, detailed, stately improvisation — a bit like the ùrlars in classical bagpipe music — which nervily mixes the sternly doom-laden with precarious, other-worldly wonderment. (the ondes martenot is an amazing twentieth-century instrument — beloved by messiaen, for example, and varese. the theme-song of star trek is a vocal forgery of its sound. ‘j’aime cette fragilité qui côtoie la capacité de te décoller le tympan sur certaines fréquences inopinément,’ says julie. ‘je tiens une bombe dans les mains. j’aime son instabilité, son humanité.’) wood, breath, blood, eggshells… on the night of a purple moon. very warmly recommended.

from the sweating walls of a warehouse rave to the intimate chambers of a rogue heart, raar’s third release resonates boldly in sonic overtures from french techno supergroup, w.lv.s, and bristol’s prolific joefarr.

modern love very rarely reaches out to artists outside of its immediate surroundings, it’s happened just a couple of times in the last 14 years. but there’s something about philippe hallais that compelled the label to ask him if he wanted to do something together. philippe has released music on a bunch of cool labels (l.i.e.s., the trilogy tapes, delsin, in paradisum), but hearing the first tracks recorded for lighthouse stories, it was obvious philippe was hitting on something new: a kinda weird slow/fast dance music that sounded like a footwork variant sewn up with an exotic production style that was impossible to pin down. these tracks eventually splintered off into different directions, held together by a strong sense of narrative and motion harking back to a teenage obsession with turntablism, detroit electro and ghetto house, and eventually juke and grime. although he’s spent the last few years focusing on more industrial dancefloor variants, for lighthouse stories philippe turned to these foundational influences, as well as his love of mixtapes and sound collages full of unfinished ideas, skits and experiments, all things that inform the flow of this new album. lighthouse stories captures a sense of nostalgia well, but is also a futuristic vision full of that exploratory, vibrant spirit that’s so hard to find in electronic music these days. frames of reference are hard, but in places it reminds us of the dusted swagger of anthony shake shakir, the acquatic drexciyan movements of ultradyne, a loose-limbed take on shangaan, and of actress at his most submerged. but ultimately, it’s an album made by a producer looking to his personal history while forging new ground, pushing ahead with little regard to convention and ultimately ending up with something completely unique: a kind of intimate journal rendered in bright colours and odd shapes.

as half of teengirl fantasy, logan takahashi is best known for making glassy, expansive tracks. on his debut solo album nogeo, however, he creates an intimate world of fertile, furtive rhythms. throughout the album, techno-tinged patterns unfurl with zeal and digital melodies slowly rise and fall. if the music of teengirl evokes widescreen, technicolor club scenes, nogeo is a zoomed-in study of timbre, rhythm, and melody.

seems like somethings going on across the pond at the moment with seemingly blossoming, or at least rejuvenated scenes in the united states and canada. our last handful of releases on freerange have included artists from montreal, tujuana, pittsburgh and chicago and were about to add los angeles to the list with this new one from justin jay and ulf bonde. the young producers have been steadily building steam with a number of fine releases the last couple of years and we welcome them to freerange for their debut ep entitled indecision. the title track sets the mood with a low-slung, super-deep house groove complete with an intimate vocal and a charming simplicity which contributes to the powerful end result. elements come into focus then disappear in a fog of reverb whilst playful guitar picks add a live jammed feel to the loping groove giving things a bob moses/francis harris kind of vibe

as the d edge label clocks up release number 24, it turns to the phil hinter ensemble for a fantastic three track package that is filled with fresh house vibes. phil hinter ensemble is a joint project by phil s main pillars philogresz and german simon hinter. they have ties with labels like their own phil, love unlimited vibes and of course d-edge. previous eps have gone down well around the world and simon hinter s smart grooves and sample based fill-ins blends with the wombastic bass and shivering synth lines of philogresz perfectly. up first is the owl, a squelchy, synthetic house track with lively drums and chords and magical trumpets all making for a party starting track. it is perfectly arranged and expertly musical, unlike much of today s plastic and sample heavy sounds. in the air then gets even more playful with glossy synth stabs, rumbling bass and diva vocals all bouncing along in a charismatic style that is full of colour. struggle then gets intimate and final with scurrying little percussive sounds, burst of afro vocal, down low sine waves and icy snares all making for a perfectly seductive minimal techno brew

sold out! what happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine? when light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? those are the questions that johannes heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold. <black light> sees the german techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. heil chooses the words of fellow futurist nikola tesla to set the stage of the black light story: >black is the true face of light, only we do not see this<. track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the figure and cocoon regular conjures throughout the album. everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. battling the current, johannes heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. if the pictures painted on >black light< are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. the machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. its the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. its pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose. provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. the impression that >black light< leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, johannes heil shows no sign of slowing down.
