dutch master orlando voorn with a two-track release containing some of his pioneering material as format. rightly recognised as one of a handful of artists who built the early, crucial bridges between europe and detroit in the late-eighties and early nineties via collaborations with juan atkins and output for kms, voorn’s legacy is unquestionable. winning hollands dmc championships in 1986 and 1987 was the real career catalyst and there seems to be no let up in quality since then, either as a dj or a multifaceted, multi-genre producer. these two tracks are produced in 1993 and still didnt loose their magic!damn right and jam session have that the raw charm, edge and vibe sounds so current. energetic, melodic and broken, both tracks touch on a myriad of styles but what shines through is how modern electronic styles can be traced back to this sort of fantastic, unique output. format remastered could be sitting snuggly alongside modern house, techno, uk garage, uk funky and many more contemporary styles. this is a rare chance to grab beautifully treated versions of classic voorn material.

in june 2011 subtext recordings was restarted after a six year hiatus for the release of the second lp from emptyset, titled >demiurge<. this album represented a transition from the first two subtext releases, a pair of seminal experimental recordings from the groundbreaking duo vexd, switching path into a new terrain that allowed for the distortion and dissolution of the sequencer grid and shifted the focus of the label from the programmed to the composed.
through this development subtext recordings has evolved into a conversation between emptyset, the ex-vexd artist roly porter, and composer paul jebanasam, who has spearheaded the revival of the label. this new release continues this dialogue by commissioning both porter and jebanasam to respond to the material contained within >demiurge< and develop their own interpretations of the original album.

tireless producer, tronic boss and top international dj christian smith here steps up for his first release on plus 8. over the years christian has offered up a high volume and high quantity of techno inclined singles for myriad labels (bedrock, systematic, 100percent pure, soma), so it only makes sense he now finds himself on one of the scenes most reliable outposts for such material. the two track ep kicks off with house is house which is, as the name suggests, a little house-ier than the flip, but still deals in plenty of heavy bass weight and slick repetition. the devil is in the detail filtered, dark voices, rattling cowbells, washes of white noise synths and long, thin, forward looking pads - all of which are married to a mid-tempo groove. the more forceful indulge me then follows. taught kick drums start immediately as claps and subtle synth stabs swell in volume until they eventually fill out the whole airwaves. squirming behind are thin and icy steel lines until the first drop when the deliciously bouncy groove sets in proper. far from aping the usual detroit and chicago tropes, christian smith has once again crafted two classy dance floor joints that are not only exquisitely produced, but that bare all the usual hallmarks of christian smith, one of the most consistent producers in the game.

i light another cigarette in the tittery the sparrow has landed. we have returned from our excursion to the modern and would like to share what we brought with you: some showtunes and a twelve tone row. the show, as it turns out to be, is our very own. we started out writing new material to perform on stage, after we had found out it was great fun to refrain our instrumentation to vocals, piano and bad acting. originally very attracted to the- as our label told us- very clandestine idea of releasing three 12inches with very limited playability for djs, we agreed not to ruin our dial friends and work on an album instead.

surplus ships is sort of an odd - beat based - vinyl version of pomassls spare parts album (raster noton 2009). with hints from his excellent skeleton material released by sabotage/laton/sex tags mania (1996-2007) his new mini-lp takes fragments of dubstep, techno, skwee, even oriental atonal melodies and merges it with pomassls signature industrial attitude and avant sense of compositions. enter the quality sonic world of pomassl.

ander-traxx is a fresh label operating out of glasgow with the intent of releasing righteous underground house, and although mainly a platform for the labels founder alex-ander to showcase his own productions, ander-traxxs remit also includes the presentation of unknown talent for future releases. for this first release, alex steps up to the plate to deliver because of me, followed by 3 remixes from artists born and raised in glasgow. the original kicks things off with its intro of glacial pads and jittery hats, before quickly delving into a seriousely deep groove brimming with melodic layers. although because of me gives a strong nod to the recent developements of producers like omar s and kyle hall, it undoubtedly has the hallmarks of an alex-ander production, his unique arrangements coming to the forefront while still complimenting the crisp percussion that drives the track forward. carlos nilmmns (co founder of the formidable solab production unit) mix is a much more off-kilter and submerged affair. nilmmns plays down the epic quality of the original and adds chugging rhythmics and sweetcured piano work for a lesson in divine repetition. mesumas feedback mix goes in for the dancefloor attack, not surprising for a gentleman whos previous work has seen releases on hardgroove and seventh sign. rolling toms and a booming kick meet aquatic vocal samples and spectral harmonicas, and will still please those partial to deeper sounds. last up to give because of me the rework treatment is meschi (lunar disko, lux, snuff traxx), who mixes his chicago influenced analogue stylings perfectly with the source material. stripped down crescendos build up to a euphoric drop, and meschis elated melodies bring another twist to this excercise in deep funk. because of me is one of those rare e.ps that works just as well in a non-club enviroment as it does on the dancefloor. with this warning shot, alex-ander will surely be capturing the ears of many in 2012 and beyond.

a couple of months after the release of sweet nothings, dapayk & padberg are once again treating the vinyl-heads amongst us to a 12? consisting of a sunny selection of the albums core material, just in time for spring. kicking off the a-side, berlin summer nights is nothing short of an anthem: classic rave sounds of epic proportions glide through an arrangement of bouncy beats, crisp percussive work and hopeful vocals until a powerful breakdown delivers the hands-in-the-air moment. this year, summer has come early. next up, the sun came up bedazzles with a pumping beat and robotic vocals, while a progressive synth lead helps along the track’s love lyrics, turning this into a truly stunning musical moment, which already proved its power at sweet nothings’ heart. on the flip, dapayk & padberg present the albums opener, the trippy too lazy. here, were dealing with a rather brooding afterhours number that is equal parts paranoid and mesmerising as a wonky bass vibrates under dubbed out pads, eerie synths and vocal whispers. the perfect antidote to the cheery a-side!

for uzuri 018 we return to one of our home grown artists – jitterbug. time has flown since his last release for us in 2010, but we have been quite eager to get some new material out from him for a while – and, based on feedback we have had, plenty of other people are keen to hear more from him too. both his raw winter and beaten trax eps were pretty popular releases for us and his dj appearances always create a stir, so we are pleased to bring you this, the arcane theory ep. the track sequencing on this record is pretty aggressive – front-loaded with the confrontational rise of the machines. a track that really lives up to its title, sounding like the production line at cyberdyne systems… all stomp and evil synths, like a bad mood e-dancer. fallout couldnt be further from that – relaxed and making no attempt at all to get in your face. itll win you over, though. just a nice, deep groove and a lovely, phased beat. could play it for hours… the whole of the flip is devoted to nomads, a chiming, acidic wander. nearly eleven minutes in length. the kicks never at the fore on this one – most of the action occurs at the mid and high frequencies – a resonant 303, lots of hi hats and, later, synths which expand on the eastern-flavour of the track title

ayoze chico & ollie mendez aka sonogama met each other at the beginning of the 90s thanks to the same interest and enthusiasm for house music. with some more material to be released soon, these two will be very soon ones to watch!

the situation crew have paid their dues with some of the better disco edits to surface in recent times - a particularly slick and slippery revision of a quantic standard for disco deviance still gets rotation from those in the know. its nice to see the slightly elusive five valley crew return to the art of the twelve inch with something a bit more substantial in form of a new label situationism and some original material for the debut . barcelona is presented in three different danceable situations (geddit) with the disco version a particular highlight. the excellent psychemagik are also called on to remix the track in their own inimitable somewhere between house and disco style

the majestys pleasure label returns after an extended break with their fourth issue of disco-centric edits and its clear the time out of the spotlight has left this mystery bunch of dusty fingered tweakers fully refreshed. whilst previous volumes have dipped toes in funk filled and philly string led waters, majestys pleasure vol 4 focuses fully on music from the post-disco /proto-house period of the 1980s and sounds very much like a beautiful swimmers dj set condensed into just 12 inches of vinyl. the concerted diggers out there will be consulting their sample notes for the source material on each of these (space palace has the most obvious hook) whilst those whove simply been enjoying output from the intermittent eros label will love both sides here

the latest release out on separate skills recordings is written and produced by the israeli protagonists deepa & biri featuring gene. the promising talents and key figures in the electronic music scene of tel aviv have massive support by the most respected legends from detroit. there is no doubt that these young guys are musically rooted in a direction we call techno with a wide range focus on chicago and detroit. concerning their activities yaron deepa, itai biri and gene adnew are well known artists by now with impressive releases on labels like upon you, rotary cocktail, circle and material.

for a short period in 1981 and with brand-new equipment such as roland 808, sh 101, gr 500, we made some 8-track just for fun jam tapes. mainly just to experiment for our own pleasure. from those sessions, only white horse made it to a final treatment. the rest of the material was left behind, as our record company at the time found it too different. after white horse being a track indeed defining our sound, we thought it would be interesting to dig out left-overs to fulfill a documentation of that period - crucial for us at the time. we were still innocent newcomers, without actually knowing to be creating a new sound! recently, that left-over material was transferred from analogue to digital and, to stay as true as possible to original intentions, we only added vocals, bass and drumbeats ahead of a final mix. we hope that you will enjoy listening to it. good vibes from laid back copenhagen 2012.

(also known for robots are un-american, re-released on italians do it better last year). inspired by a lcd soundsystem song tinto b. comes with this great record! we cant find the connection to the lcd soundsystem track that supposed to have been his source of inspiration, and actually we dont care... its some of the best recent italo disco we ve heard in a while! if you are big on italo vocals the a side is for you, if instead you dig deep electro disco but without the chanting, the dub version on the flip side will more than certainly send you into italo space. another hot artifact release from mr. bottin. tip! you know a producer has got something when the first note of the first track you hear makes you sit up and take notice. so it is with 19-year-old east londoner joss ryan: the instant the jabbing orchestral motif at the beginning of >melancholy dreams< – the title track of his debut ep – kicks in, it hits your emotional centres hard and lodges in your memory. as statements of intent go, its a pretty tasty one, and tells you that this is a talent who can stand out and make an impact way beyond the ins and outs of the micro-genres and endlessly reconfiguring trends of underground music.to put it simply: joss is a grime kid who expanded his horizons. his popular mix of his own material for mary anne hobbss radio show last december already shows that the three tracks on this ep are by no means a fluke, and there is a whole lot more to come besides…

masami akita and lasse marhaug have been working together since the mid 90ies. the first release on marhaugs (now deleted) label jazzassin records in 1995 was the >first rock< split single. in 2001 merzbow and jazzkammer (marhaugs project with john hegre) released a live album. later, akita and marhaug executed several live collaborations, but often with other artists such as hair stylistics and jim o rourke. in 2010 they finally got together to record as duo. recorded at gok sound studios in tokyo the results can now be heard as >mer mar<.
made using a combination of scrap metal screeching, analogue synths, and enough effect pedals to give you overweight with most airline companies, >mer mar< is a tour de force for both of these noise veterans, hinting to some classic 80s merzbow jams such as material action.

mutex recordings are back on wax with fluid ep from unbalance. this guy put out one of the most decent productions in 2011 with his white-labeled unbalance series and definitely is one of the artists to watch for in 2012. his music is an incredible collage of everything you love in techno: thick groove, detroit-styled chords and spooky futuristic effects. argentinas techno hope jonas kopp on remix duties completes the release with his unique recognizable straight-to-the-dancefloor material that really kicks ass! this one is a record that shouldnt be missed!

although it has found emotional music from france, russia and south africa over the years, for this release it returns to the birthplace of deep house, chicago, to focus on up and coming producer matthew wieck. opening the ep with the wiry tones and lush pads of >flying feeling< whichs take you up into the stratosphere with its floaty vibe, its complimented by >hydroacoustics<, which utilises an aquatic arpeggio lead and warm, oozing pad underneath, held together with crips, charged percussive work. on the flipside >worlds beyond< demonstrates wiecks darker side, with an acid bassline riffing against cavernous piano in what sounds like a more introverted take on larry heard. altered moods boss malcolm moore finishes off the ep with >cleared direct<, an 808 jam held together with foggy chords and disembodied radio transmissions - the perfect compliment to wiecks fine material.
