the second release on tb arthurs (312) label finds the mysterious artist revealing a collaborative project with magda as blotter trax. the pair first encountered each other at the famous motor city record store record time, when detroit artist bmg introduced his then co-workers magda and derek plaslaiko to arthur, who was visiting the shop from chicago. sometime after that meeting, magda and arthur went into the studio and jammed together for a week, the session was recorded live on analog 1/4 tape and then three tracks were selected for release. 1a is six and a half minutes of modulated synth sounds that are psyched out and sci-fi, spooky and truly atmospheric. full of cerebral cinematism, acid lines and ghoulish textures all add up to a truly standout track. 2a then marries dark wave pops and clicks, unsettling alien lifeforms and menacing, slo motion industrial drums into a physical and imposing groover riddled with paranoid sirens and drones. last of all, 2b snakes and slithers its way through undulating drums, cosmic freakiness and gloopy synth sounds that are all seductive and subversive in equal measure. this, then, is a truly fascinating pairing.

zarenzeit is a band project by the label owners with lead keyboarder and producer george btp, also known as allstarr motomusic or dan piu. after several live projects back in the 90ies, the band releases its first full album as black inside with vocalist debra jones davis and sarignia bonfà. the lp infuses deep soulful house and 80ies funk elements, starting with the ambient house drift of time travel, which soon settles into a classic rare synth pop as 2souls, 1heart, while let them know they won blasts more into the spacy and light dancefloor. sarignia s lovely gospel version of talk about a child, ends the album on a spare, but no less grooving, note. quality house music not only for adults.

italian label greentech was inaugurated by minimono last year with a great remix by windy city legend paul johnson. the second edition features gaetano caruana aka caruan making his debut in production after many years of djing. -tempo reale- is an inventive and off kilter groove generated by clearly analogue means that pounds and grinds away out of sync at first, until it gradually begins to lock and it sounds great. there s some killer remixes by a real who s who of the scene and we can t help but mention all of them! first up fellow italians verrina & ventura deliver a typically stripped and rolling minimal house rendition. croatian hypnotic techno don petar dundov then delivers something more pounding and aggressive than we re used to, but we loved it all the same. finally the -eduardo de la calle tempo intrusion reale remix- sees the spanish master of trance induction deliver one of his best remixes in a while, complete with spooky sci-fi atmosphere, millsian bleeps and sonar blips.

london’s 22a follow up their sell-out tenderlonious / al dobson jr split ep with nine more exclusives from henry wu and jeen bassa. originally limited to just 100 copies, this has become a hugely sought after 12”!
henry wu applies jazz infused hip-hop sensibilities to these synth-boogie, and deep house tracks. this was wu’s debut release and set the platform for further massive releases on eglo and rhythm section. on the flip jeen bassa goes in deep with percussive house infused afro-beats laden with jazzy hip hop rhythms. haling from a family of talented musicians (mo kolours and reginald omas mamode iv) he has since gone on to similarly large releases, including last years sterling time waves ep on 22a.

it is very difficult to present david duriez without writing an encyclopedic tome as its influence on the house music in france was decisive. since its inception in 1992, david released over a hundred records under his name, tens under various pseudonyms, mainly on vinyls on the most renowned labels like 2020vision, ovum, systematic, pokerflat, f communication, under the counter, stickman, crosstown rebels, the end, etc .. (the list is long, see discogs.com to be convinced) and as many remixes for some of the greatest artists (think moby, dj sneak, gemini, dj hell, llorca, telex, random factor, johnny fiasco, paul johnson, jori hulkkonen, ralph lawson, random factor, kenny hawkes or mr.c). founder of the label brique rouge and a whole galaxy of other labels, he participated in the creation of internationally recognized labels such as robsoul with phil weeks, freak n chic with dan ghenacia (from apollonia) or rz muzik. at a time when david had federated online the cream of the house producers via a forum (far and long before social networks), ivan smagghe had nicknamed him -the producer of the producers.- , a true house music activist, but most of all david duriez is a devastating dancefloor dj, he did several tours around the world and played in some of the biggest clubs in the world between 1995 and 2010. truly one of the most important players in the french electro scene, david is back on tracks after a few years hyatus. but don t call it a comeback because he has never really gone awol, he has been watching the scene and now he s back in the studio. you can expect a (very) long serie of releases for 2016, you have been warned!

finish techno pioneer and dum records boss kimmo rapatti aka mono junk and melody boy 2000 is back with another fine ep of some of his greatest tracks. all three have been released before now, but never all together on the same ep. a1 sound stealer was released in 2007 under the melody boy 200 alias and since then has been hugely sought after, often fetching high prices on discogs. it is a high impact techno track with racing drums and chattery percussion that will take any floor by storm. a2 all alone, again as melody boy 2000, has only been released on cd before now, as part of a label compilation back in 2002. this one is deep and rubbery, spaced out and elastic and is full of moodiness and melody. both b-side tracks were written as mono junk and both were written in 1992. first up, apache acid came on vinyl own music man and is a face melting, hundred miler per hour banger with manic 303s buried within. finally, ‘beyond the darkness’ was a key early techno track to come from finland and has previously been released on dum010. says the artist of the track, “an ensoniq asr-10 arrived on the market and studio engineer perttu bought it right away, but i never liked to use sounds that someone else had made. we sampled the track’s bassline, strings and others from my jx-3p separately and mixed it all together.” the result is an atmospheric track with swirling pads, icy synths and form drums that will make people march, no doubt.

ron juan back at it on his own label after the last year’s debut with the sunny record “o pais do sol” and the stunning solo track “black jungle” released on the zurich’s deepart sounds label. now it’s the turn of “musica complessa”, a journey trough four exceptional tracks hand made in his studio combining jazz, funk, afro and house music. all the tracks come from original arrangements played and recorded with both real and synthetic instruments to create different sounds for the music world who don’t needs hits, but timeless music for his soul!

philippe quenum returns to cadenza music with ‘solitaire’, some thirteen years after helping kick start the swiss label with the 2003 release ‘orange mistake’/ funky dandy’. this groundbreaking single, co-produced with luciano, has since become a landmark release, not just for the label, but also as the benchmark for the micro-house and minimal tech-house genre that developed over the decade. with a music career than spans back to the mid-80s (dancing in nyc as part of the breakdance troupe, the magnificent force), quenum found his forte with house music, both as a dj, and as a producer and label owner. setting up the access 58 label in 1998 as a platform for his music and collaborations, quenum has consistently released over the years for labels like crosstown rebels, soma, alphahouse, thema and trapez ltd. ‘solitaire’ finds quenum on fine form, on the lead track, dubby fx and bass shaking shots roll out over an urgent disco beat, muted brass and technoid stabs fire from all directions as the tension building pads flourish. shadowy forces are at play on ‘mystic’, discordant sounds echo and bellow over reverberating percussion and a dense back beat that fire into life with shuffling hi-hats. wrapping up this welcome return to the label is ‘mystery’, whipping snares and industrial clangs rumble over the urgent drums for more hypnotizing dancefloor work from philippe!

after a fabulous summer and a mind-blasting krake festival, killekill takes its next step and kicks off another new label called vanta series, which is destined for small series of 12-es with out-standing dancefloor tracks. the name derives from vantablack, a colour from nano technology, which is the blackest black and actually invisible. vanta therewith stands for the total emptiness and is the perfect name for a label which does not have a defined identity itself but is a platform for different series, which will all have a concept and aesthetic in itself. the first series is called -the end is near-. it consists of 4 releases and comes with an artwork by french artist elzo durt. every release will contain a small poster, all four posters put together become elzo durt s piece -les anges de l apocalypse-. first record is by dez williams, who also released on shipwrec and bass agenda recently. a-side acidbanger is a serious banger and has future acid classic written all over it. the b-side comes with two acid variations - one more stingy, one emotional and psychedelic - which show the potential of this outstanding producer. open your ears and put the needle on - here is some acid!

heavy sampling tends to drive this jeep and give it some character, many popular/unknown gems lifted from various dusty tapes and wax procured from thrift stores and vinyl throughout northern florida, cheap drum machines are clumsily slammed against it all and keep everything in a familiarly dance-y zone, while amateur chords and melodies are provided via guitar center synths and youtube ripped commodore 64 blips and stabs (note the cheeky nintendo voices as outliers). a fusion of analog discoveries and pixelated memories (melded together by the relentless florida heat), its an apt soundtrack for long and wistful road trips.

after spending the majority of 2009 in hollywood, chanes briefly returned home to finish up songs for what would become his 2010 release, an experimentation in instrumentation. the 15-track tape, presented by house shoes, exposed us all to the nomadic 21-year-old producer from canton, michigan. chanes would spend the next two years working between home and brooklyn, before relocating to arizona, where he would release his follow up project, renegade hands, (insect records 2013). presented again by shoes, hands solidified chanes as one of the most promising young producers in the country.
fast-forward to 2016, and at 27, this self-titled debut takes us circa 2007 - 2009 with the soul-chopping salad days of his mother s basement, through the alternative sampling williamsburg, brooklyn sessions of 2010. if the melancholy desert psychedelia of his isolated four years in perpetual southwestern summer gives us a glimpse into his growing electronic influences, then the angst of his winter homecomings are hiding under the aggressive parka weather beats that first caught the attention of detroit’s underground.

10 years redshape live is a special thank you to the labels i mainly worked with in the past ten years and also to all the people on worlds dance floors, which gave me so many stellar moments. starting on running back, the best of live series will contain tracks which were only part of my live set: previously unavailable and not even arranged as full tracks. as i always record my shows, i searched for the moment, in which each of those tracks had their biggest and also earliest impact. i took that recording and rebuild them part by part to make them proper dj versions without loosing their live roots. named after the cities where they were performed. av aviv and rome.

after time travelling with l’orange on the time astonishing ep (mmg) and delivering a new episode of his -total orgasm- mixtape series, kool keith aka tashan dorrsett is back at work with producer junkaz lou (aka the great priest of dark funk) in order to preach and teach the galaxy about his religion and lead all you lost sheep and freaks into the light of god. -the preacher- is yet another classic scripture by kool keith coming straight from the junkadelic temple.

ayman rostom has really taken to the maghreban, with a succession of singles for versatile and his own zoot label that have shown him fully capable of bringing his sampling talents to the realm of house, disco and techno. the latest missive from the maghreban comes on black acre, a label rostom has previous with after that superb library music lp as dr. zygote a few years back. two tracks deep, lose it presents all that we love about the maghreban, the title track sees a classic “girl i’m starting to lose it” phrase lifted off an early jungle classic from boogie times tribe assembled with a monstrous analogue bassline and plenty of feverish effects tweaking in the mix. “wrong move” is just as smart, delving into the darkest depths of rugged breakbeat science.

the music has come into my life when i was about 9 years old, thanks to one of my sisters tape with songs by bob marley and the wailers. so i switched from reggae to dub, from dub to jazz, from jazz to radical improvisation in a moment.now i m 33, and after producing pretty much any kind of music, i want to put together what i still like of dub music with that of the south of europe, which is the place where i grew up, melting everything together with vintage equipments and working with modern machines at the same time. playing and producing this music has been therapeutic for my head. making all this known is for me like seeding again the love for music without any distinction. andrea gabriele 1981 - 2015

freaks was originally the brain child of bournemouths justin harris and london-based luke solomon, but has mutated through its live format into a 6 piece outfit incorporating the infamous jonny rock on guitar, sascha darroch davies on drums, vocalist stella attar and rub on bass. with three albums behind them, a seminal label we know and love as music for freaks and a top 10 hit with >the creeps<, freaks have journeyed through filter disco, quirky mid tempo house and minimal techno to cement their own revolutionary style.

sing with me: much in the same vein of the mannheim house sound made popular by artists like johnny d, nick curly, christian burkhardt etc. bretts gives us a deep but driving track centered around an african boy singing. brett chops the sample up to create a choir of ethereal voices to support the boys singing. as the track progresses it takes a left turn into weirdville through some dramatic synth tweaks & sweeps. this track is perfect for anyone who likes to dance standing up, with their head down and first firmly in the air. speaking japanese: many people will tell you learning to speak japanese is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and theyre right. lucky for you, brett has done all the work by translating his message into sound. the core inspiration for this track is based on a sample from a song by get physical owner and artist mandy. they were kind enough to let brett use the sample and run wild with it. the result is 8 minutes and 12 seconds of over driven 909s, rolling bass lines and a pad so thick you need a fork to eat it. all of this keeps the calm while frantic chatter and out of this world fxs take you to a japanese after party somewhere in shibuya.
