one of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of jamaican music, the paragons have a long and complicated history. first formed in the ska years by bob andy and tyrone evans as the duo of andy and ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of howard barrett and john holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties, following the subsequent departure of andy, holt, evans and barrett made the paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. they had an incredible run of hits for duke reid and coxsone during the mid-to-late ‘60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before holt’s solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. then, in the mid-1970s, the paragons reformed, cutting material for new york-based labels such as clocktower and clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in jamaica at harry j for bunny lee mixed with work cut at bullwackie’s studio in the bronx, along with re-workings of classics such as ‘left with a broken heart’ and ‘memories by the score’ is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

d marc cantu is a don when it comes to warm, rich synth-laden house and techno, with a sprinkling of electro sprinkled over his approach for good measure. now he comes to altered moods with an album that finds him in a particularly mellow mood, not least on sultry opener -always on my mind-. there s space for experimentation, as the offbeat snare patter of -blanket statement- demonstrates, but by and large this is all about undulating house delights. -mozaic- is a particular highlight with its captivating synth design and dreamy demeanour, while -steamfunk- revels in skippy broken beats that flirt with twinkling leads and lashings of delayed bass. plenty varied but consistent in tone, this is a damn fine album from a seasoned pro.

emotional rescue starts its 5th year by shining a light on one of europe s best underground 80s label in spain s auxilio de ciento. their terra incognita volumes i and ii collated an international mix of synth-pop, new wave, world and industrial sounds to a small but appreciative following. released in 1985 and 1986, the volumes have become highly regarded and rightly sought after, finding a place in discerning playlists from london to amsterdam and dusseldorf to glasgow. here, taking a premise of avoiding the songs unearthed on other recent reissues, is a unique album itself. starting with denis mpunga & paul k s esoteric criola, a fusion of fourth world ideals and poly-rhythmic funk. the music of mal, bene gesserit and la caida de la casa usher, however, soon highlight that the decade also belonged to dark, minimal synth as to shiny balearic ideals. the inclusion of hector zazou with bony biyake and their contribution komba, is a fitting continuation from their cult noir et blanc lp before, things continue with us avant-artist danny alias and his humorous big brother -response- to laurie anderson s superman o. image pour image loose indie-pop and the inclusion of seminal beast of burden lead again to a zazou contribution, this time in his collaborative stranger in a new light, before the compilation eclectically ends with the dadaesque lakota and the post punk dub of instead of s closer, angels

green village is a label operating out of jersey city that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. this various artists 12- plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. theft & toyc bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music -atlantic-, while bd1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. eighth ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named -whip-, and then etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of -predator-.

science fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. this ep is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of roland corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of exterminador, chromed by ngly distortions in track 02. dj nephil on the b side introduces a solid visionary chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

roll the dice are back with a new full length album, ‘born to ruin’. the swedish duo, which consists of malcolm pardon and peder mannerfelt, are established musicians in their own right. pardon’s background producing scores for film and television is reflected in roll the dice’s cinematic aesthetic. while mannerfelt’s acclaimed third solo album ‘controlling body’ landed in 2016, he counts the likes of fever ray among his producer credits.

nyako is our 7th vinyl release here at otc and it s a big one. south african producer behr created nyako together with makadem during a santuri safari session at sondeka festival in kenya. the e.p is 4 cuts that build in brilliance from the original which has extremely broad appeal. indian producer daisho delivers a straight ahead 4 x 4 house groover, south-london production duo modified man swing their analogue machines into action for a heady synth adventure, which is just a bit broken. berlin-based duo of dirk leyers and dj nomad (hans reuschl) are the ideal pairing to merge technology and tradition together as africaine808 bring up the rear with a balearic sensation to round off the ep. makadem is a talented musician and vibrant performing artist from kenya. he s a figurehead of the benga scene in nairobi. his stage presence and powerful vocal delivery, had him likened to the legendary fela kuti. makadem innovates by bringing traditional african instrumentation, story telling and contemporary production methods together.

someone outside takes us on a journey into space with three pieces of shimmering and emotive techno. constellation opens the ep with a broken rhythm, sizzling hats and shimmering chord stabs. forbidden planet mixes driving percussion patterns with a deep pads. lost city resolves the ep with an energetic bassline and arpeggio hook.

the 3rd record from pi electronics is by the rotterdam based, thessaloniki born producer, damcase. pi03 includes five original tracks of punky electro and techno, flavoured with damcase’s riffs and noisy aesthetic. sharp percussions, along with distorted grooves and broken beats, as well as some experimentation with voltage control techniques. the label reveals new colours on its palette, though not shifting away from its character.

miami deep and tech house label sports is hitting its third release with the sultry tones of greek producer salt, who offers up two original tracks of lean and mean tracks to get pumping to. quantum xl features punchy bass, dubby fx and seductive chords that burrow right into the heart of the night, while imago loop takes a sharp turn into dreamy broken beat crafted with light, airy drums and woozy pads for the most blissful of listening experiences. on the remix front, sylphe offer up a re-dub of quantum xl that fattens the bass up further and works more percussive angles into the mix, while martinez deftly swaps imago loop-s breaks out for a slinky micro house beat.

after delivering the fh05, label co-owner pablo tarno is back at the controls with the fh09. the a-side features the more clubby cuts, ranging from the broken beat and dramatic jazzy piano chords of “horizons” to the more driving house beat and playful synth melody of ‘gunkan”. the b-side is all about the laidback grooves, “bitchplease” is a heavy dubby bass affair with serene pads that will lighten any mood, while “preemo” brings back pablo’s deep trip hop roots, closing off the record with a classy slowed-down number.

title track ‘guardian angel’ is a drum-oriented stomper, with até’s beloved alpha juno all over it. ‘dark days’ conveys images of dystopian winters with endless nights trough deep strings, resonant bass lines and garage infused drums. closing off the ep is ‘deejay d’, a hissy and fragile electronica jam to warm up your broken heart, bringing you comfort and solace in even the darkest of days.

hot on the heels of his cold outing earlier this month, bristol bewitcher batu makes his debut on hessle and marks their first release of their 10th year of business. timing is everything -marius ripples with an insistent broken drum pattern that s coded with latent funk and dubspace while of court creates even more room between the drums while maintaining the techno pressure. -noseme- flips for a more subaquatic session where the beats adopt a more relentless rolling formation while the groove develops more of a dubby sensation. finally dont brings us back up the surface with a soft beatless thrust. play safely.

this is the fifth release on eye teeth, the techno sublabel of interdimensional transmissions, by it compatriot alstadt echo. alstadt echo effortlessly blends the avant garde with industrial techno influences into his own deeply austere sound, with grainy textures contrasting perfectly against his broken beat structures. the influences are clear, he has even been honored by one - with multiple tunes included on regis the boys are here mix tape. alstadt echo also runs his own detroit imprint known as modern cathedrals, an ode to the concept of cathedrals of sound, the place where this music belongs.

cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular el paso sound system, based in the waltham park area, dennis alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following u roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. born dennis smith in the rural district of culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western kingston. once el paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer keith hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for studio one and hit material for duke reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, lizzy. alcapones longstanding links with bunny lee yielded the excellent guns don’t argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of lees all-time greatest rhythms, including delroy wilsons better must come, john holts left with a broken heart and slim smiths rendition of the temptations soul classic ain’t too proud to beg.

one of the sweetest and most idiosyncratic voices in reggae, tenor singer cornell campbell also has one of the longest-running careers of any jamaican recording artist. taken under studio one founder clement sir coxsone dodd’s wing at a very young age, cornell cut his first recordings in 1956, long before ska was even established. he remained based at studio one for many years (working as a label printer as well as a recording artist), and also voiced sides for king edwards in the ska years. he then briefly joined the sensations in rock steady and recorded at treasure isle, before moving back to studio one as leader of the eternals when reggae arrived, cutting huge hits there such as stars and queen of the mistrel, and giving early coaching to slim smith, jacob miller and bassist robbie shakespeare. joining forces with ace producer bunny striker lee in the mid-1970s brought a dramatic new surge in popularity that greatly boosted his profile overseas. the ropin lp was issued on third worlds justice subsidiary in 1980 a sub label set up to handle strikers product in the uk (though hits like mash you down and the title track had been handled in jamaica by joe gibbs). one of the albums outstanding moments is bandulu, an anti-rude boy epic voiced on the late night blues rhythm, while opening cover, just my imagination, has an uncredited toasting portion from errol scorcher.

enter tsuruda. championing one of the most innovative and heartfelt collectives in the los angeles area, this salt lake city native has a very bright future ahead of him. expertly combining the hard-hitting percussion of trap, the swagger and depth of hip hop, and a style of sampling and melody creation all his own, tsuruda truly brings a unique and gripping sound to the stage. in a scene where true originality and heart is often difficult to find, tsuruda follows a similar path to artists like ta-ku and mr. carmack. he understands his love for music and his own struggle, and brings them into the light for his listeners. following his extensive body of work be sure to look out for his album “move”, dropping on noisia’s division imprint soon.

eric cloutier launched palinoia last year with a single of his own, but now he s turned to berlin mainstays exercise one to lay down some of their trademark psychoactive machine music for the second installment. heptagon sports metallic synth notes clanging out over a freight train of techno drums, while prism takes a more nimble approach to twist out its various synthetic squeaks. nitrogen is a warmer proposition, placing the emphasis on chords and melodies while still aiming squarely at the dancefloor. thirty four finds the duo veering away from the 4/4 dogma to deliver a captivating kind of broken techno in a soundscape loaded with tension and ominous empty space.

here again another japanese artist does his debut release on bosconi extra virgin, daisuke kondo from okayama drops a delicious 4 tracks ep featuring a special reinterpretation from italian duo nas1, not new to the bosconi fam, who also appeared on wild oats and more recently released on berlin label money sex. -roof dancer ep- starts with the subtle and hypnotic house jam of -everybody-, a groovy and bouncey deep house track enriched with funky elements and delayed keys going all along the track, in real daisuke s trademarked style.on a side second cut there s the -roof dancer- tune who gives the title to the ep, a funky and extra warm broken beat jam dense of organic latin percussions and jazzy vibes..and it feels like a real band jamming on a beach! nas1 rework for -exit- opens the b side with a pumping, tribalish and unconventional freestyle jazz-house jam for your freaked out moments on the floor or even a -stand up!- track for your opening sets, something for theo s fan..the ep ends with the chuggy beat of -passion-, a track which reminds some of best moodymann s classic atmospheres or even those soulful loungey tunes from the late 90 s. tasteful beats for your summer!

for the past four years francesco leali kept busy running parachute alongside co-owners manfredi romano and thomas feriero, producing under different monikers and touring the globe as half of cw/a. finally back as clockwork, leali reveals a five track ep featuring some of his rugged music to date. a briery shift into foggier territories where leali explores layered sound-design and broken rhythms, something he had only hinted in his previous work. online entity depicts lealis hindrance with modern societys social networking obsession. in contrast to what these services were actually intended for, leali explains, they seem to have impacted a lot of people negatively, resulting in unnecessary resentments, misinformation and feelings of proximity when these tools can easily alienate you from reality. constantly worrying about how you want people to perceive you is absurd already, but for many of us this constant sharing has become the only way to achieve happiness, to be satisfied. in an era where all of this is getting out of hand its essential to remind yourself of the things that truly shape you as an individual. with online entity i aimed for feelings of release, mutating resentments into something positive - more physical. i imagined it as a soundtrack to an escape from these very situations. the release showcases this approach with five club-ready numbers filled with calculated, pounding drums and gloomy atmospheres, with only rare glimpses of hope scattered throughout. to round things up we mobilised fellow parachute affiliate ayarcana and serbian techno pro lag who both deliver two startling interpretations of escape sequence and rumination.

this highly anticipated release by los angeles based artist, axkan, delivers a powerful message to the techno underground, letting everyone know this record hasn t come to this point by mistake. with powerful remixes by luis flores, pinion and rolandohödar to support, axkan delivers a strong statement with tension , a techno masterpiece with broken industrial rhythms that is bound to shake floors, and crack the surface. he masterfully creates some true and raw emotion, with his dark, sinister and gritty sounds that is guaranteed to grab attention from the beginning. axkan s self-confident creativity, however didn t come alone. techno heavyweight luis flores provided a remix that is nothing short of spectacular. he encapsulates axkan s raw, dark noises, and completely manipulates them into a gnarled and twisted rendition. pinion s remix perfectly complements the release in a cohesive way to get the dance floor moving. his unique characteristics include a deadly vicious groove with glitchy vocals combined with deep melodies. aerotek founder, rolandohödar, had to get his hands in there, with his industrial techno breaks remix to add to this ferocious ride. with all tracks united together, this ep is rooted with serious energy and will undoubtedly tear speakers apart. it exploits experimental to traditional 4x4 percussion workouts and is definitely worth listening.

hedonism in its purest form means nothing but adjusting one’s life and ambition towards pleasure and joy as well as the prevention of pain and sorrow. following that concept, wice’s first ep takes the listener along on a journey of extremes: persistently strolling between sensual desire, ecstasy and lust as well as the deepest abysses of human sensitivities.

second release from the label offers up broken rhythms, jacking grooves and deep spirituals. hold me explores lyricism within tight repetitious rhythm, on which saxophonist tyrone isaac-stuart explores hook lines and story telling whilst bassist jordan christo maintains control over the low-end spectrum. that he man of hers melds jacking, upbeat tempo with romanticism and melancholy on top, with louis ktisti providing guitar accompaniment. one s own permanent faith, on the other hand, provides for a moodier and more subdued spiritual dance rhythm, which warms one up before the spiritual explorations in would you tell me about you. in this final track, the guitar rhythms provided by jabriel alsuhaimi and spiritual exorcism of the saxophone by tyrone isaac-stuart present a different angle in the approach towards discovering the endless groove.
