wir brauchen keine neuen techniken. jeder hat eine technik. was wir brauchen, sind neue sounds. und es ist nicht einfach, neue sounds zu finden.- aber genau dieser aufgabe verschrieb sich richard pinhas. heute kennt man den franzosen nicht nur in seinem heimatland als etablierten space-rock-elektronik-musiker. doch 1977 war -rhizosphere- sein erstes soloalbum. zuvor hatte er schon fünf alben mit seinem wegweisenden bandprojekt heldon veröffentlicht. befreit von jeglicher gruppendynamik schickte er sich auf -rhizosphere- mit hilfe seines kurz zuvor erworbenen moog-modular-systems dazu an, in neue klangwelten vorzustoßen. auf vier der fünf tracks sind der 25-jährige pinhas und sein synthesizer ganz allein zu hören. wir erleben dabei eine verschmelzung von mensch und maschine, die sich immer mehr zu einer ausgedehnten, abenteuerlichen reise in unbekannte gefilde entwickelt. pinhas� vereinfachter ansatz brachte eine ganze galaxie an sounds und ideen hervor. jeder track beherbergt ein eigenes akustisches und emotionales mini-universum. die bandbreite der stimmungen ist kaum zu fassen. außer pinhas war nur noch der schlagzeuger françois auger beteiligt. er begleitet pinhas auf dem 18-minütigen titeltrack, der sich anfühlt wie ein raketenflug zum mond.

frigio consistently plumb the depths of electronics to find new material, and this time the madrid imprint has unearthed, in the murky currents, a real gem. tecwaa is the solo project of york based producer paul fawcett, a musician who discovered his sound in the british warehouse parties of the early nineties and went on to nurture it with movie scores, detroit techno and homegrown electronica. his debut brings together three pieces of original machine music alongside a very special remix. the menacing -the eighth circuit- broods into being. looming synthwork is further darkened by distant vocals, house percussion keeping time in this sinister opener. -mantra & machine- has similar attributes. adopting clean rhythms, the track refuses to sit comfortably in any genre pigeonhole as tecwaa weaves a work of cerebral depth. charles manier introduces the flip with his take on -fervour-, tadd mullinix returning to frigio for the first time since his superb remix as jtc of juanpablo s -dream- in 2010. a funk laden work of hip hop breaks and industrial distortion where manier explores blackened moods and horrorshow grooves. the original of -fervour- closes, showing another side of fawcett s style, bpms drop as foundations are laid bare in this stark conclusion.

berlin based techno titan frank muller adopts his beroshima alias for a new four track ep that is already been hailed by the likes of marcel dettman and laurent garnier. first emerging in the nineties, muller has since become a techno great who has played from asia to south america and beyond. he�s had plenty of underground hits on the likes of cocoon and soma, and held some key residencies over the years. always one to command your attention with his multi layered grooves, this ep features an old juan atkins sample �buy some shit from detroit� that has been part of beroshima�s live sets for years. excellent opener �encounter� reflects a recent idea jeff mills and muller had to produce tracks together for a not yet produced sci-fi movie. it is an eight-minute astral techno trip with smooth, driving drums and plenty of intergalactic synth lines. �the passion of lovers� transfers the organic beroshima style into 2018 and shows off frank�s passion for spaced out electronica. it�s a brilliantly bumping cut with lithe synths and melodies adding that soul and colour as it races through the galaxies. the iconic �buy some� with the atkins sample then surges into the future with icy hi hats dancing over rubbery drums. the warped synths take the lead and bring a real sense of off kilter energy to this most timeless bit of techno. last of all is the fantastic space mix of �encounter� which is dreamy and cinematic with exquisite keys and pads colouring in a huge night sky as the drums drive things along. this is an archetypal techno ep filled with cosmic colours and serene emotions.

pal joey (aka joseph longo) came up in the heady days of new york street culture, amidst b-boying, boom boxes and an unusually entrepreneurial spirit of beat-making. beginning with crude �pause tapes�, he was soon making tracks with drum machines and sampled vocals, all painstakingly assembled with razors and reel-to-reel. working at vinylmania, where larry levan might be found shopping for records in his pajamas, helped joey�s entrance into the city�s nascent house music scene, and he was soon working with everyone from krs-one to sade to the orb, whose �little fluffy clouds� he tweaked for stateside tastes.

man band delivers its first various release with a stunning downtempo opener by the enigmatic dj sacom and an ever mind-bending trip by forest drive west, with his second hypnotic remix of elise. more newcomers on the flip include bristol based patrick flint with a celestial workout of swirling percussions, and a massive, dub inspired cut by paris local figure hanah.

increasingly known for his productions as much as his storied dj sets, eric cloutier approaches the studio with the same kind of precision that marks out his club and festival appearances. on this first release on palinoia he exercises a keen sense of control over playful elements, not least on lead track �heuristic�. the nagging lead synth may hop around the mix, but it stays locked on to a thoroughly focused undercarriage of drums and low end that suits the professional techno set. �ipseity� is lighter in its demeanor thanks to some calming pad tones, but the strong structure of the track remains. the release rounds up with the slower thump of �opprobrium�, surmising cloutier�s attitude to the warm-up part of a serious, long-lasting dj set.
