la rioja in spain may not be thought of as a hotbed of avant garde techno and electronica, but psychoskunk has been quietly issuing an uncompromising salvo of proudly underground releases since as far back as 2004. error etica, an alias from label boss victor martinez, is at the controls for this tenth vinyl release on the label, and he s sounding as proudly left of centre as ever. diatonic scale locks into an insistent groove, but the real magic of the track lies in the grubby notes punching their way around the drums, capped off with artful distortion that gives a wonderful bite to the production. tetratonic scale keeps things fuzzy but blows the rhythms wide open for a more poised, patient kind of techno incantation. r2pis remix of the track meanwhile clamps it back in order with a stern beat and a slow-release minimalism guiding the evolution of the track.

five years in the making, this third lp ‘in my last life’ represents a humanising of the enigmatic producer’s sound - comprised of 8 heartfelt and emotional songs penned and delivered by norwegian singer/songwriter ane brun and the incredible alison may respectively. it is also, quite simply, his defining work to date. an artistic statement and a perfectly considered body of work, ‘in my last life’ owes very little to the dancefloor that andrew is often associated with - instead drawing its inspirations from influences as far and wide as kate bush, atoms for peace, aphex twin and talk talk. through its 8 songs, the lp plots an enchanting, carefully spun tale of love and loss - explored through the narrative prisms of reincarnation and immortality. taken as one cohesive and beautifully constructed whole, the 8-track lp represents an journey that will surprise, stun and overwhelm those that submit to its charms - a truly personal masterpiece with all the musicality and detail that andrew’s fans know and love him for.

bristol’s finest reggae producer meets doncaster’s number one dancehall mc as mr benn & parly b join forces for an ep chock full of vibes. first up -gwarn go bathe- is a cautionary tale of lacking personal hygene in the dance underpinned by a bubbling dancehall riddim. -heat up- is much of the same as things get hotter, whilst -session cork- slows things down a little with some more laid back vibes. despite working on various remixes together, this is the first time mr benn and parly b have worked in a combination - hopefully the first of many more to come!

the third and final instalment in frits two bar house music & chord stuff sees him continue to showcase his distinct style of lo-fi, wonky house - both quirky & unconventional, yet instantly endearing in the same breath. served up first in frits melting pot, theme 09 kicks things off with a shuffling, ukg esque rhythm and rnb flexed vocal snippets, alongside floaty arps and that chord stuff that swells and stabs in the mix. throw in a weighty bass and frits trademark analogue wonkiness and you ve got a prime example of a wentink wobbler. next up, theme 10 hits you with an organ melody reminiscent of a warped crystal waters, before twisting and turning into an edgy off-kilter house track. a glitchy synth line, bouncing bass and dreamy pads will hook you till the end. flip it and theme 11 offers up a chuggier affair where glistening arps are interspersed with squelchy and sustained synths. elements and effects are combined throughout, mesmerising you with a glimpse into the wonky world of the frits. closing it out wentink leaves you with a quirky club stomper, coupling a gritty bassline, saturated loops and off kilter, lo-fi stabs all tied together with a driving kick. across this 3-part series frits has left the fancy titles at the door, letting the music do the talking and demonstrating his penchant for making interesting, engaging and distinctive house music, not your average two bar house music and chord stuff.

boogie box launched in style last year with a release from the mighty stl, and now they re revisiting that strong first step with a clutch of smartly selected remixes from some deep cover operators. juniper drops two dubs of -haze & kraze- that press squashed synth pressure, found sounds and splattering fx into tight but funky grooves with a distinctly nocturnal feel. fold s dub of -hide & seek- spaces things out beautifully, taking a crooked, steppers approach that works wonderfully with the source material. jonas friedlich s own dub of -hide & seek- takes a dustier path through the undergrowth, completing a package of truly non-conformist techno that chimes with stl s own outsider spirit.

rough and ready machine tracks from brazilian producer/december collaborator innsyter (la club resource). cyn002 picks up where coletivo vandalismo left off, channeling that same wild, diy bedroom studio spirit across nine individual recordings. opening with sprawling synth motifs fighting against a steady rhythm track, desintegrado sounds like an industrial dub punk trying to channel early cluster or moebius and strangely succeeding. the rest of the lp treats us to vaguely drexciyan, subaquatic electro (bries) and twisted lo-fi minimalism with bonus eerie monologue samples (superficial love). the one recurring theme on magnetic healing is innsyter s clear love for mournful, post-punk inspired melodies. it comes across loud and clear on almost every track yet never sounds tired. things eventually draw to a close with the hopelessly romantic new wave instrumental forest shaman - a short ballad for all those weary-eyed party-goers who stuck around til the sun came up!

hello leif mueller on shtum. pleased to meet you. especially with such a strong debut release. everything is starting with the no-nonsense-techno track teleshop which is designed for big room pleasures. on wo ist meine playstation 4? things get a little more psychedelic without losing the straightness you need to get lost in the dance tunnel. cairo is a lesson in keeping goose bumps alive with its up and down galloping synth stabs. to cool things down, the stuttgart based producer drops nightcleaner, a quietly starting ambient affair that evolves into a little acid monster.

after making a promising start with their first installment, disco pocho return with a second round of expertly selected, sliced and segued groovers from the parties of yesteryear. javi frias is the cat on the buttons this time around, taking two loose and limber disco funk burners and giving them just the right subtle touch to set the place alight. its a shame has an easy tempo, but there s more than enough heat embedded in the looped up slices frias gets busy with it s a dense, rugged and rock-tinged sound that should please brass construction fans. on the flip, you got what i need turns things up with a powerful, diva-led gem that s heavy on the one, just like it should be.

infuse027 marks label head enzo siragusa’s debut solo ep on the imprint. for the occasion, he finally releases ‘little angel’, a track close to his heart which was debuted on his bbc radio 1 essential mix at the end of 2016. embellished with swinging drums, and gentle soaring pads, it s a feel-good masterstroke of deep house. on the flip is romania’s cristi cons on remix duty, who keeps things deep but adds a subtle attitude that builds throughout, all while paying homage to the original.

brendon moeller offers up his set in motion ep on echocord sub-label echo echo this september, comprising three originals from the dub techno veteran. south africa, new york based producer and dj brendon moeller aka beat pharmacy/echologist has long been respected as one of the pioneering figures in ethereal, dubbed-out techno with regular appearances at global hot spots like fabric, berghain and cielo as well as releases on labels like third ear, kimochi, neovinyl and echocord. here though we see moeller joining the roster of the latter’s sublabel echo echo, marking its fourth release. title-track set in motion leads with brendons signature murky synth textures at its core whilst lumpy low-end tones, shuffled hats and spiraling dub echoes fluidly undulate amongst one another throughout. eastern beach follows, and as the name would suggest, nods towards brighter sounds with airy pads, soft bell chime synths and pulsating subs driving the composition alongside swinging, heavily reverberated percussion. economy then closes the package, stripping things back to gritty dub stabs, dusty 4/4 drums and billowing noise sweeps.

my favorite robots next release is a very special remix by dj tennis. it initially comes as a 10 white vinyl and will then be available digitally in autumn. mfrs ‘barricade was first released on dj tenniss life and death label back in 2012. it was a huge house track that resonates to this day, so it makes sense the taste- making italian steps up to remix it. he is someone with a cultured take on brooding house and techno, as evidenced by the music he a&rs for his label as well as things like his own standout dj-kicks mix from last year. his new remix is a masterfully melancholic one that starts with a delicate ambient synth line hanging in mid air. breathy vocals eventually arrive to send shivers down the spine and finally, deep, rolling, mid tempo kicks bring a groove that carries you away into a reverie. its made all the more mournful and poignant thanks to some broad synth chords and swirling pads later on and is sure to provide a real centre point of any seriously emotional set. this is a stunning and absorbing single and another high point for my favorite robot records.

one of our most mysterious and intriguing states of consciousness is the dream. we lose consciousness when we enter the deep waters of sleep, only to regain it as we emerge into a series of uncanny private realities. through the fog of the mind we can get a glimpse of a world beyond our day to day realities that sometimes is able to show us deeper truths than those we face in awake states. roger is one of those lucid pioneers that is able to translate these experiences into sound. let him guide you through these wondrous clouds. were very happy to welcome dutch-born german-raised roger van lunteren on sohaso for the first time. his rosa dos ventos ep is a four-track story that oozes retro vibes and nostalgia for a past that never seems to have existed. utilizing raw 80’s analog synths and humanoid acid lines he sets atmospheres that remind of lynchian dreamscapes. vanish starts out with an emotional chord sequence, as you enter the fluid world of the subconscious. a gnarly bassline welcomes your arrival and lets you know things here aren’t exactly what they seem. journeying on through seemingly dark areas, it ends with a hopeful melody and the bass softens as you start feeling weightless. uncontacted uses choral pads and two intertwining 303 sequences as a way of communicating between the different dimensions. aroy dee remixing vanish is like taking a psychotropic liquid, adding more drive to the original while retaining the emotive synth patterns. sleepless is rogers hardest cut on the record, again providing directly plugged in 303 goodness and stomping beats. it rounds off a balanced ep with plenty of introspective dance material.

up next on amsterdam’s format label is a four-tracker featuring original cuts and remixes by matrixxman, echologist and label boss juan sanchez himself.
the fourteenth format release is definitely one not to miss out on, as it offers material from some of today s most sought-after techno heads. up first is expiration, a joint effort from matrixxman and echologist. this one combines matrixxman’s signature bass and echologist’s one-of-a-kind dub techno flavors across a very trippy canvas. format’s juan sanchez follows with a dark and synth-heavy rework of the track. on fokus, juan displays a more melodic cut propelled by a playful groove. closing things off, matrixxman and echologist turn fokus into a crushing techno track filled with sweeping fx.
format continues with another strong release that’s destined to do the damage.

hailing out of montreal, 00:am follow up their killer first release with a four track va e.p. setting their stall out as a label to watch in 2018. the hutchin crew open up proceedings with an ethereal and hypnotic cut, coupling sweeping pads with dreamy keys. next up, dj ok takes things darker layering thudding toms and atmospheric strings with a sci-fi sampled spoken word. on the b side, cromie & iron curtis let the pounding bass sit centre stage interspersed with otherwordly synthwork and that high hat fizz. finally, science fiction steers things on a new wave tip offering up a down-tempo french vocal tinged closer to round off this stellar e.p.

remixes from alexi delano+fredy grogan! on the latest release from make mistakes, roy england and friends take us on a ride into the beautiful, soulful depths. from uplifting love jams, to the chunkiest house funk, as always, the gang has you covered. roy england’s original mix soars through the night skies. pitter-patters, emotive pads, and a driving groove bring us the softer side of our little boogie baron. perfect for the euphoric abandon of a sweat soaked dance floor. alexi delano, a man who needs no introduction, kicks things up a notch, taking the original and giving it a restructured, pumping groove. a dubby line runs through, with echoing pads, a pulsing bass, and fluttering keys and synths. a beautiful dance floor meditation, with plenty of junk in the trunk. fredy grogan takes a hard left, and steps confidently into a psychedelic, tribal funk. teasing new vibes out of the original material, grogan transforms beauty in rhythm into a classic house groove, before settling us in to a hypnotic groove. make mistakes keeps on keepin on. thats all we know.

vinyl only. paris-based meemo joins the inner balance fold with three breezy originals and a remix from the black tone, just in time for longer, warmer days. passage and soma both take a pillow-like backdrop of dubby bass and slowly evolving pads and cut it through with skippy hats and fat claps mellow yet driving to get things heated. keep movin kicks harder, jazzed up a little by its vibrant percussion, while toni be aka the black tone takes soma for a late-hours spin, conjuring one of those sustained moments of dancefloor bliss that we ve come to expect from this label.

next up on duskys renowned 17 steps label is the return of long term pal kiwi. having supported the lads on 9 of the 17 steps tour dates and having also provided the 15th release in the label catalogue - the fellow londoner now readies his oooh ep which comes backed up with a remix from feel my bicep affiliate hammer. kiwis sound is one defined by positive, kinetic feeling joining the dots between detroit techno, soul and balearic. with previous releases on futureboogie, life and death and moscomans lauded disco halal imprint, hes garnered several accolades including reaching number #85 in mixmag s top 100 tunes of 2017 and sitting at #1 in the genre chart for a total of 9 weeks with his orca ep back in 2016. now continuing on his ascent, kiwi lays out a pair of rapturous, gooey house jams that lands right on time for the festival season. on oooh vocal lines swirl over a largely beatless backing track. a rich, balmy feeling unfolds behind synth chimes and layered delays which work together to form an irresistible summer dj tool. andromeda then follows up and blends 80’s soundtrack-tinged stabs with crispy drums and thick sub bass before being accompanied by a pulsating synth line that carries the track to a delectable crescendo. hammer then closes things up with a somewhat hallucinogenic take on oooh with lfos, analogue sweeps and blobs of acid bleeding together to cap off an altogether warm and woozy trip.

having hallmarked their success through their ability to showcase the hottest talents in dance music, whilst being renowned for curating some of the finest compilations over the years, londons finest party collective, future disco now offers a warm welcome to gimbrère to the imprint. the young dutchman steps up to the plate with his heavy weighted disco weapon, a thing, seeing ava regular jordan on the remix duty. kicking things off, gimbrere teases with a series of sweet melodic disco grooves under a booming range of 808 kicks, slowly sweeping off the filters to let the passionate vocal howls let loose and tear through the speakers. coupled with thunderous crashes and well deserved breakdowns, this track is without a doubt some real peak time business from the flying dutchman. on the flipside, jordan lays one down for the early hours, switching up the beat into a trashy hi-hat affair, making room for a wobbly old school bass and synthline to playfully glide along with the sam-ple hooks. two completely different, yet equally as satisfying cuts, rounding off what is yet again an-other quality release from the future disco crew.

raised on the best of popular and underground dance music of the 70s and 80s, partner has created an outlet to pay homage to the finest hooks and loops from around the world, seamlessly repurposing them for the dancefloor. first up, a-side track patu launches headfirst into an off-kilter bollywood infused dancefloor curveball punchy drums, melodic vocals and vintage instrumentation, save your weirdest shapes for this one. on the flip, my people gives an injection of latin heat triumphant, horns and an unrelenting rhythms section throw this into full carnival spirit. just in time for the summer. since relocating to london from brighton, things have been taking shape for partner music. last year saw a debut festival slot at dimensions festival, plus a handful of great support from the likes ofmount kimbie, dan shake and san proper. with some exciting releases lined up throughout 2018, its looking like a promising year for the budding producer. with this release high praise continue to build their status as a label to keep an eye on, with their party series and clothing line steadily growing in popularity.

london s release/sustain imprint returns this may with the a says hello ep from detroit s alton miller, chaos in the cbd step in on remix duties. detroit s alton miller has been in the game for the past three decades coming up alongside luminaries derrick may, chez damier and the late frankie knuckles and releasing material on the likes of peacefrog, moodymann s mahogany music, theo parrish sound signature and clone amongst others. suffice to say, miller stands as an extremely important figure in the history of authentic, soul-drenched house music. title-track a says hello opens the package and as expected we re treated to an elegant slice of house infused with a flawless musicality as multi-layered synth chords, pads and swells intertwine alongside dusty drum samples. cool but so... follows, embracing an acid-jazz feel with broken, organic rhythms, sweeping pads and warm chord progressions throughout. mule musiq artists chaos in the cbd step up to rework cool but so... next, adding their own spin to things via warbling rhodes licks, bright chord sequences, a wandering bass line and an insistent organic drum groove. below the underdog then rounds out the package perfectly with gritty bass hits, tension building synth swells and a rugged, bumpy drum groove.

scotlands number one label present their stunning first release, remastered for 2018. title track osb has lit up many a dance floor down the years and the flip s menacing it s dark, but i m not afraid has become a unique classic, lauded and loved by many. the haunting move yo body rounds things off in true hutton drive twisted fashion. a definitive must-have.

monsieur-du-jour, chevals, graces us with his presence for an ep of exquisitely produced edits. la bouteille opens things up with a rhythmic workout combined with filtered melodies that erupt into a summery piano driven jam. under your command then comes in with the classic golden era disco feel, tied together with a shuffling beat. flip it over and fairy tales takes you into 80s boogie territory with those squelchy synths & irresistible vocals. closing out the ep chevals brings out the peak time, slap bass, disco stomper in croisades, complete with sultry sax licks, sure to do damage to any dancefloor its set before.

this summer, my favorite robot records release another of their excellent and immersive full lengths, this time from german production outfit, rework. the trio of daniel varga, michael kuebler and sascha hedgehog aka rework, describe their musical aesthetic as cabaret-independent-house and combine icy minimal structures with catchy euro-girl vocals, anglo-french funk antics and a dash of dance floor melancholy. playhouse, meant and items & things have all released their work, which includes three albums before now. this latest is another musical adventure filled with surprises. this is an effortlessly diverse album that brings a wide range of influences to the table and ties them all together with reworks unique sense of style and cool

4th tilly jam with four deep disco / house slammer
folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

following our 004 ep we present our first va release with northsouth records bossman and all round don henry hyde (aka harry mccanna) kicking things off. still talking epitomises the forward-thinking sound that is currently coming out of london - a perfect example of our ethos and aesthetic at the label. a tried and tested bomb that will do serious damage on any dance floor.

autarkic makes up part of an unspoken alliance from telaviv, which is currently altering the state of contemporary house and techno music. heavy dreamer, the artists first, four track outing on life and death, showcases much of what this bold movement is about, all while pushing it forward into progress. ever present tones of kraut and punk rock flow throughout the ep, beginning with some things to keep, a pumping, warehouse floor filler. autarkic steps up to the mic, often re-amping and distorting his vocal delivery, placing it alongside finely programmed keyboard riffs, tough drums and further psychedelia. realistic guru, the trippiest of the lot, is tailor made for an early morning dj tennis afterparty excursion. slowing down the pace on powerhouse, autarkic hints at moments of bauhaus and tones on tails doom and dance pop, while offering up a digital only, stripped down, bonus version. the title track stands as a testament to this new wave of artists, coming from the shores of israels mediterranean coastline. bass, drums and guitar are recorded through bespoke boxes and presented through the lens of modernist club culture.

from the age of fifteen, mark laird has been playing clubs and shows around ireland in venues like sandinos, the factory and a residency in voodoo venue. dropping his debut release on jelly red, laird continues to fly the flag for his country as a stellar producer and now joins fabrizio ulivieri’s hopera records, following up records by luksek & jun kamoda, classonix, last nubian, never dull, and hyas.

envisioned as a visit to a distant island, the ep opens with ‘another shake’, greeting you as you come ashore with a warm and tranquil mood. with ‘golfclap’, you venture deeper into the mainland, the rainforest thickens and tribal dance ensues. flip the record and things wind back down with hazy after-hours groover ‘slide in deep’. finally, aleksandir makes it a family affair and joins the expedition with a remix, packed with juno melodies and and rhodes-tinged broken beats.

building on the mission statement that was ferdinger’s debut album “gelände”, comes “abbild”, a 4 track ep and the second release on his life in patterns label. the tempos are tweaked up and the sounds are honed and angled for maximum effect. “gegendämmerung” is straightforward but manages a lyrical tilt, while “spiegelreflex” oscillates between moments of dry precision and epic dreaminess. with “abglanz” the newly paris based producer brings things back to the geological strata that characterized “gelände” - but now with a rawer edge and more reflective surface. glos’ remix of “gegendämmerung” provides ambient and analogue textures, finishing the ep on a more introverted and melancholic note whilst maintaining the mechanistic drive of the other pieces.

what do you get when you cross a frenchman, a dane, two irishmen and a swede? the debut various artists compilation from kyoku records, of course. gathering the producers who make up their whole discography thus far, the melbourne-based imprint are welcoming back dorsi plantar, sune, long island sound and ethyene (alongside folamour and marc bianco). translating from japanese to a befitting -dancing birds-, the odoru tori ep is revitalizing the elegant origami series for one last spin. the orizuru, hachidori, oumu and hakucho, that is, the paper crane, the hummingbird, the parrot and the swan are bringing the handmade array to a suitable conclusion. on the a side, the scandinavian connection is responsible for bringing some summer heat. dorsi plantar sheds his usual wistfulness for a slightly moodier, more functional track with -senorita lolita-, although still incorporating some of that playful sampling he s now come to be known for. -californicate- from sune takes a more laidback approach and channels the breezy and carefree atmosphere of the coastal golden state. on the flip side, long island sound follow the same recipe that made -delusions- such a big hit with the intricate sampling and eloquent arrangement of -ease in-. to top things off, ethyene, with the help of folamour and marc bianco, close out the record with a groovy, vocal number that sees them employ their signature french touch formula to great effect on the simply titled -good-.

setaoc mass fourth record for figure displays a level of maturity an artist this young rarely inhabits. two tracks feature his ability to craft finely layered idm, showing another perspective of the ideas behind the cavernous techno taking up the rest of this ep. nestled between the electronica-pieces is torque, heavy yet undeniably beautiful with its big breaks towards ascension, moving effortlessly despite its weight. things turn serious on the flip side, bursting with bleeps and bulging beats. b1 is a slowly swelling beast with many heads, twisting and turning ceaselessly along its 6-minute runtime, never once letting the tension decline. spiraling inwards for a full-on mind trip, search lights is that key track to drop in the murkiest, darkest hour of the night, one that cuts through relentlessly and unites whatever is left of the dancefloor for one last frenzied commotion.

conforce returns under his silent harbour guise this august with the ‘noctiluca’ mini lp, a six track collection set for release via copenhagen’s echocord. dutch producer boris bunnik has been releasing material under various guises over the past two decades such as conforce, versalife, hexagon, vernon felicity and of course silent harbour which he revisits here following 2015’s ‘hinterland’ on deep sound channel and the self-tilted inauguration of the project in 2012 on echocord. the beatless drones of ‘riparian’ open the package, perfectly setting the tone with murky bell like chimes, rumbling subs and splashes of white noise before title-track ‘noctiluca’ picks up the pace, tipping the focus over to bubbling dub echoes, glitched out, minute percussion and a sturdy muted kick to keep things driving. ‘dwelling’ is up next, featuring expansive, washed out synth textures, cavernous bass tones and modulating percussion throughout. leading on the b-side of the release is ‘peridinum’, employing classic dub techno tropes with an amalgamation of choppy stab sequences dynamically evolving over off-beat hats and a thunderous kick. ‘fusiformis’ strips things rhythmically whilst keeping the bubbling delays and expansive reverbs at it’s core before closing track ‘pelagia’ brings bright, resonant synth lines, delayed percussive hits and tension building synth bass into the limelight.

after a ten year long career releasing music with many different labels icicle has taken the logical next step and started his own imprint, entitled entropy music. the name derived from his second album ‘entropy’ still aims to inspire the concept that music behaves as all things do in nature and degrades, falls apart and becomes more chaotic with time. in an effort to confront this, entropy music strives to bring controlled, rolling, technically detailed music, without ever overstepping that line when the process becomes inhuman and cold. on this second release on entropy music icicle teams up with kindred spirit and cousin proxima to deliver a four track collaborative ep. the opening track which also welcomes ben verse to the label, is rolling tech funk pur sang. the weighty and detailed yet simple breathing groove make it a track true to the entropy ethos and ben complements this with his trademark lyrics reminiscent of renegade hardware shows past. on the a2. icicle brings a near wooden stepper with a viscous turbulent low-end, a firm wink to the past, with dust me off. icicle’s track is expertly offset by proxima’s solo offering retrace a peak into futurism boasting an evolved playful groove which takes on board equal measures of jump up and 90’s tech. the ep is rounded up by the title track deep dreaming, where icicle and proxima collaborate once more to bring a slight curve-ball. pianos ring in an eerie musical intro to a dark but sultry track where the energy is second to the atmosphere.

last spotted tomfooling as tryck & ton with edvin edvinsson, and prior to that as tiedye on mike simonettis italians do it better imprint, subversive swede anton klint makes his debut on simonettis latest label 2mr with two more vitally trippy, heavily dub-informed originals. ‘mun chugs at a stately 107. rippling in places, squiggling in others, theres an unabashed fx weirdness bubbling and popping over the insistent shimmering dubwise groove. tweaking, freaking but running at such a smooth temper theres space between the chaos, anton is balancing some heavily hypnotic alchemy here. ‘strupe takes things even lower and slower. a dusty bluesy chugger, unhurried-yet-relentlessly building with a great sense of cosmic drama, listen and marvel as more elements are precision introduced throughout the seven minute trip. a masterclass in modern day honkytonk. remix-wise were thrusted into the later hours with a technoid twist from andre laos. maintaining antons originals trippy charm and measured pace but re-amping it with grittier foundation, teasing risers and an insurgent synth strike, its the perfect complement to one of 2mrs most singular releases to date. open wide.

david mayer’s career and background is marked by a desire to keep moving and experiencing new perspectives. having finally settled in berlin, the german dj and producer has built up an enviously diverse back catalogue on labels such as connected frontline, objektivity, gruuv, audiomatique and keinemusik. with his first release on acid pauli and nico stojan’s ouie label, mayer brings his trademark groove to the fore once more. ‘the call’ is a mid tempo chugger built around a kick, clap and 808 blip, before a more organic groove develops. the slowed down chants and wigged out synth line take the vibe into afro cosmic territory, without losing the original energy. ‘sooner’ is a little more urgent - a crisp, forward leaning rhythm and a deep, subby bass lead the way, before another frazzled synthesiser takes us on a melodic walkabout. ‘black queen’ is another example of mayer’s slick drum programming, keeping things zesty on the dance floor but with acres of space to lose yourself in.

while ant plate has been insanely busy with a plethora of aliases on a multitude of labels recently, he s still found time to turn out some surefire heaters in the studio with long time sparring partner matt hunt. this release marks the first appearance of rhythm plate on vinyl only, but it s worth the wait. there s an epic scope to apathetic empathy, which features bashy 80s drum hits and squelchy bass front and centre, but soaring vocal licks and piano stabs that widen the track out beautifully. observed privacy is a more emotive cut laden with illustrious keys, abuser experience is a bright and bashy deep house belter and prototype night takes things down a slinky, acid-speckled route. rhythm plate still serving up the house music realness after nearly 20 years.

gaetano battista has been popping up intermittently for some time now, most notably under his own name on boe recordings back in 2013. now he s adopted the name mental vibe construction for this turn on chez damier s courtesy of balance, bringing his most forthright dancefloor cuts to date. guru is a muscular, punchy slice of house music executed with a midwestern toughness and lashing of synthetic soul. lifestyle is equally enchanting in its melodic qualities without skimping on the rhythm section, while lee theory takes things deeper and funkier. chi soul touches on uplifting techno tones in its illustrious synth patterns, but it s still got a house heartbeat pumping away at the centre.

it’s always exciting to introduce new names to the spring theory roster and pedro vian, its latest addition, makes no exception to the rule. it’s also the 10th release on spring theory, so more reasons to rejoice! the barcelona-based producer came to (my) attention with his releases dancing hindus and titled beautiful things you left us for memories on his own label modern obscure music. this ep picks up some of the themes from those records and further explores of his style of elegiac synth lines and primitive drum machines. the sound of dancing alone with your eyes closed, late at night. haunting house for the heartbroken.
