hailing from bari, nico lahs has become a beloved member of the stock5 family. on the latest instalment of the label that guy blesses us with his runway ep. but don’t mix up the title with some anorexic chicks that stumble along the catwalk heidi klum sent ‘em on. if there is one direction, it would lead straight into a planetary orbit. the opener “shreder” sets the pace and mood, a decent composition of pulsating synths, a vibrating bass line and a whispering voice, telling us to fasten our seatbelt because our next stop is going to be “orion”. actually this is in one of the biggest astral objects having been discovered yet. nico takes us there on his spaced out trip, while we are watching stars being born and dying in super novas. on the flip we’re finally approaching “runway” the title track. dive into a world that is undiscovered, promising and overwhelming. all in all this ep is way more than “mystic”, which is the last track. we left our planet as humans and we landed as androids in stock5 galaxy, which is ever expanding, crossing boundaries and creating new life on the universal dance floor.

title track don t stop is a loose and playful thing that chucks loopy, circular drums, little vocal riffs, synth stabs and tumbling toms into the mix and lets them all groove along for almost six infectious minutes. its a spritely, silvery and slithering concoction that makes you shake your every limb. stare is a deeper, darker thing with rattling snares rolling over flappy kick drums and wobbling synths ducking in and out of the space left behind. its a tumultuous, drum lead affair that toys with your expectation, threatening to drop or explode but never quite doing so, instead keeping you right on the edge of your seat throughout. the final offering is nian which again has super well defined drums and hits all tumbling and sparking off each other. it s spacious stuff, too, and the indecipherable foreign language vocals add another layer of intrigue to what is already a fascinating cut.

after last years album *love & devotion* the husband and wife duo of mike paradinas and lara rix-martin follow up with *weird drift*. the album shows just how much their ability to write confident and thoughtful pop songs has developed, while still being able to retain the sleepy cushion of steamy synth pop that made the first record so rewarding to listen to. this time album features the vocals of a vezelay, a.k.a. french singer and producer matthieu le berre, who brings a gentle poised falsetto to the duos productions along with a delicate but hopeful angst. the vinyl lp comes with download code for the full album.

maeve is the record label run by three close friends, mano le tough, the drifter and baikal. maeve 04 is the drifter s debut on the label, and his first original music since late 2012 for permanent vacation. again showcases a tougher side to his productions. the again ep consists of 2 tracks, both aimed firmly at the dancefloor. again is a rolling 10 minute trip, with some twists and turns along the way. blocks with its tougher, ahem, blockier beats and soaring synths is a more upfront affair.

kiwanuka, a 25 year-old uk native of ugandan heritage, was raised in north london where he split his time between session work and local gigs. along the way, having found footing as a solo artist, he was signed to communion records, then polydor, and has since performed throughout europe and north america too touring in direct support of adele. he made his way through nashville this past summer with just enough pause and aplomb to commit these morsels to tape. the a-side *you ve got nothing to lose* is an original composition, featuring the buzzards dominic davis on upright bass and cory younts on piano, joined also by fellow balladeer lillie mae rische on fiddle. their contributions transform his work into a stone-cold groove with almost orchestral underpinnings, making it a fitting extension of their previous blue series. the single also features a chilling rendition of townes van zandts infamous *waitin round to die* on the b-side, the perfect compliment to the timbre and mood of the a-side.

early in 2013, los angeles-based live act pharaohs dropped their debut on esp institute, island time, along with tornado wallaces esp debut thinking allowed the idea being a simultaneous release followed by the artists remixing each other. well, here we have the 4th corner of the puzzle, a perfect set of jams for the tail end of summer. on side a, pharaohs themselves revisit ahumbo, inviting the neighborhood boys over for fatty then proceeding to bang the drum, while the flip side gives us the tornado wallace take on if it ever feels right, a beast of a track that nibbles but never really bites, a classy tension-builder, perfect for transitioning into.

itt is an electronic take on a classic fela joint, celia (cruz) goes along a similar route but on the latin tip. both are pretty nasty and a near perfect marriage between futuristic productions and raw retro samples. finishing off the ep we get served a slice of arabic boogie using hipnotics hard to find boogie gem *are you lonely* and some fierce middle eastern vocals.

deep shit is best known as a club night curated by jack savidge of friendly fires and edwin congreave of foals. originally started as a place for deep, intense, party music, the last 18 months have seen the two resident djs host the likes of teed, andy blake, leon vynehall and luke solomon at various london institutions including plastic people, ministry of sound, bussey building, and corsica studios, finding their parties championed by guardian guide and time out along the way.

pick a piper was conceived in 2008 along with band mates angus fraser and dan roberts, and following two eps, the band is set to release their debut self-titled debut album. the album is made up of eight very different songs, all with one thing in common: each is built upon the foundation of its own ingenious rhythm structure, with musical layers meticulously applied, up until the vocals, which are added right at the very end, if at all. song writing done back-to-front, which is also fitting in this case because: brad weber? isnt that...? yes indeed! brad is also the drummer for caribou.
