hugh �redman� james is one of the greatest jamaican music producers of the late 1980s. raised in a musical household in the west kingston slum of hannah town, with his mother a sound system selector, redman gained his initial schooling in the music business from none other than king tubby, the legendary sound system owner and dub mixer that was responsible for voicing and mixing some of the greatest reggae of all time. after being immersed in sound system culture during his youth in the 1960s and 70s, redman began sitting in on sessions at king tubby�s studio, but migrated to hartford, connecticut in 1978 in search of steady employment. returning to jamaica a few years later, he established a popular sound system in kingston and began producing music with king tubby�s assistance in 1985, working with the roots radics during a time of great uncertainty in jamaican music, as the new dancehall style came to prominence, early work featured gregory isaacs, sugar minott and frankie paul, as well as rising stars such as little john and horace martin. then, following the computerisation of dancehall, redman began producing some of the most popular music of the day, crafting durable and complex rhythms with a broad team of players that included steely and clevie, augmented by members of the browne bunch and other players. redman helped establish a number of total unknowns in this era, including carl meeks, dave bailey and wayne palmer, and became a serious contender for king jammy�s crown. but the producer was ultimately frustrated by the dramatic changes to sweep jamaican music in the early 1990s, and subsequently retreated from the music industry redman international dancehall 1985-1989 compiles the best work from his glory days, with half of the twelve vocal tracks coming complete with corresponding dub versions.

first up on the fresh amsterdam-based label late night burners is kurley s debut -feelings ep-. for this young and very talented musician anything goes, as long as it s unique, warm, rhythmic, and raw, and this five tracker perfectly showcases this ethos. from the uplifting, acid-driven title track, we dive straight into -heartbeat-, taking us a level deeper. on the b-side kurley starts off with the stabby, slightly melancholic -long time- while never losing the floor out of sight, preparing us for the vocoder-infused killer -groove all night-. closing off the ep is -tribute-, bringing a more exotic type of heat. in short: a lot to love.

frío y vacío is a band based in méxico city, formed in 2015 by the prolific angel kauff (vocals, guitar, synths, drum machine) and jon gil (bass, drum machine). angel also created his more synth orientated stockhaussen and isotropía projects, jon is also half of the identik fact project, the other half being his twin brother jeremy key who in turn is the guest vocalist in frío y vacío s song autodestrucción . what frío y vacío do is a reflection of their name, meaning cold and void . they have been influenced by different music genres, from post-punk and goth rock to cold wave and synth punk, all with a classic 80s sound. the lyrics are a consequence of kauff s personal experiences and feelings. the music, a maelstrom of fast rhythms, sharp guitars, thumping baselines, everything to create an oppressive atmosphere, charged with a high load of electrostatic power that is released in almost every song. pure, dark energy. note: limited to 265 hand numbered copies - comes with download code and lyrics insert

amsterdams worst kept secret makes it back to unknown precept with his long-awaited album and first solo output since the acclaimed divine bovine tape mini-album. inspired by an evening spent in a restaurant next to a car demolition site, eindkrak s long player debut echoes the distant sound of steel being crushed and cars pressed into cubes. all this noise, in combination with the taste of good italian food, lead to the eleven tracks making up for the aptly titled brullend staal � loosely translated to weeping steel. a leisurely stroll on crumpled metal sheets, the acidic hints of oxidized metal and the smell of gasoline. inaudible and distorted vocals as if smothered by the clatter and smokestacks of steel factories. eindkrak s first full-length is all about this disquietude made of melted and straightened scrap metal. a resounding and tumultuous din. try to eat some nice gnocchis while listening to this album, and you ll see what it is all about.

bob dylan�s 1964 album back on 180 gram vinyl

a tripped-out batch of hard jamming tracks from ex-mutante rita lee � recorded with assistance from all the members of the group at the time, but in a mode that�s quite different overall! lee is clearly the star of the show here � singing all lyrics with a much fiercer vocal approach than on her earlier solo album � pushing things hard to keep up with the jamming keyboards of arnaldo baptista and guitar of sergio dias � both of whom are working with the energy that would show up in the mutantes styles in the years after lee departed. one of the most compelling aspects of the record is the structure of the tunes � less conventionally rockish overall than the direction os mutantes were moving towards � and still with that strong dramatic flair that lee always provided when in the group. titles include -vamos tratar da saude-, -amor branco e preto-, -superficie do planeta-, -teimoisia-, -tapupukitipa-, -beija me amor-, and -frique como-.

a landmark album from late 60s brazil! this is the first � and the wildest � album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the tropicalia movement � a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s american work by the velvet underground, captain beefheart, or the stooges! the music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early mpb � hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by caetano veloso and gal costa � both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. in fact, caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including -panis et circenses-, -bat macumba-, -trem fantastma-, and his great -baby-, which is done fantastically here. great stuff all �round!

a legendary album! this previously unreleased album by os mutantes was supposed to be their breakthrough album to an english speaking market � but for years it�s only been talked about in hushed whispers, and has only been heard by a lucky few! the record was recorded in paris in 1970 � and it�s all in english! (not that we�re biased against portuguese, mind you � but since we�re english speakers, it�s kind of a nice thing to have a record that we can understand!) the record features a number of tunes from the mutantes first two albums � redone here with translated lyrics, and in a compressed pop style that�s a bit smoother than the original albums, but still very nice! in fact, the record�s a sophisticated pop statement that would have stood well in the company of many of the best of 1970s rock elite � had the boneheads at philips actually decided to release the record! no use crying over spilled milk, though � because the album�s out now, and it�s filled with loads of nice tracks like -panis et circensis-, -batmacumba-, -tecnicolor-, -el justiciero-, -i�m sorry baby-, -saravah-, and a sublime reading of -baby-, a track that was virtually the manifesto for tropicalia!

berlin based japanese industrial synth duo group a make their debut on mannequin records with a killer 3-tracks self titled ep. tommi tokyo (synth, drum machine, vocals) and sayaka botanic (violin, tapes and sampler) released 2 studio albums and 1 live album in tokyo, before to move in berlin in 2016. with their mixture of dark minimal synth, avant-noise, striking visuals and performance art, the duo still carries on the very breath of early industrial pioneers such as throbbing gristle, die form, klinik, cabaret voltaire. the ep was recorded in tommi s bedroom and later mixed together with mannequin records head alessandro adriani in his own studio in berlin. the first two tracks of the ep, t.o.p. and ketabali represents the duo personal reaction against the current economy, an up yours to capitalism, news and politics, all permeated by industrial rhytmic-noises and words with no meaning. the b2 alibi instead was inspired by an autobiography of hi-red centre(japanese avant-grade art group in the 60-70 s) written by one of the members, genpei akasegawa. tommi found the word alibi in the book and she just started singing about the group. as she never wrote lyrics for that, during their live performances they are always improvised, so changing and mutating every time.
